Pat Lam
“It’s a great opportunity for some of our
younger players to experience representing
the Bears at Ashton Gate, so it’s a game
we’re excited by. We’ve got 16 current or
former Academy players in the matchday
squad, which is fantastic and a key pillar of
our vision. The competition is also great for
someone like Deago Bailey, who has had a
long-term injury and is buzzing to get back
out there.
There are guys who played in our title
winning U18 side last season who will make
their competitive debuts on Wednesday
night, so that’s exciting.
It’s a fantastic development tool for these
young lads and I’m really excited about the
talent that is coming through. It’s about guys
showing us that they can play the Bears way,
and this is their chance to do that.“
Bristol Bears
Women
SARACENS 33-66 BRISTOL BEARS
DIRECTOR OF RUGBY
ROB BAXTER
Bristol Bears beat last season’s Allianz Premier 15s
champions Saracens in a try fest at the StoneX.
Dave Ward’s side ran in five tries in the first half and five
in the second, to put 66 points past the London outfit.
A hat-trick for Ella Lovibond, doubles for Lucy Burgess
and Courtney Keight, whilst Amber Reed scored 12 points
on her return.
Big ball carrying from Row Marston in midfield saw the
Bears play quick ball, with Reed releasing the ball out
wide to Lovibond who ran in to score from the half-way
line. Saracens responded soon after through Abi Evans.
Burgess and Lovibond scored in quick succession, then
Saracens scored three to nudge slightly ahead 26-21.
With only five minutes to go, Lovibond scored her third
and Simi Pam made a lovely break to hand the Bears a
26-35 lead at half-time.
Saracens struck first early on in the second period.
However, ill-discipline cost the home side. With a
Saracens player in the sin-bin the Bears pounced and
scored twice in quick succession. First through Holly
Phillips and then the tap and go worked a treat for a
second week in a row for vice-captain Ellie Mulhearn.
Burgess scored her second from twenty metres out,
before Keight also ran in a double to seal a dominant
victory for the Bears.
