Three mates conquer
‘Mt Everest’ on bikes
• By Tina Grumball
A GROUP of three year 9 boys have done
the impossible – they’ve cycled up Mt
Everest.
Well, they have cycled up Mt Pleasant
about 22-and-a-half times to raise money
for Fijian orphanage, Treasure House.
Luke Jansen and his family visited Fiji
on a family holiday in 2019, but rather
than spending their time vacationing,
they decided to spend several days helping
out at the orphanage.
That experience stuck particularly with
Luke; how grateful the children were
even when what they changed was so
small.
• Turn to page 5
HARD YARDS: Kiki Anglem (left), Luke Jansen and Silas Jones only counted the distance they rode
uphill towards their total, which came to just over Mt Everest’s height from sea level.
Still time to be sold by Christmas!
HIKING BOOTS
report antisocial behaviour
• By Natalie Pham
ACTION: Another bid is being made to prevent
antisocial behaviour in Woolston.
ANOTHER BID is being
made to find out how prevalent
antisocial behaviour is in the
Woolston shopping area.
Police and community
leaders want residents and
business owners to tell them
what they are seeing in order
to plan what actions might
need to be taken.
The first meeting was held
by Banks Peninsula MP Tracey
McLellan and Woolston
residents in May this year.
However, it was destined
to fail as McLellan said only
two people turned up for the
meeting.
She said the community
needs to be the driver for
getting a Neighbourhood
Policing Team.
An alcohol ban was among
other initiatives proposed
by Woolston residents and
community leaders to combat
crime.
Resident Paul McMahon
said alcohol-related harm has
been an ongoing issue in the
community.
Last month, the city council
decided to investigate implementing
an alcohol ban in
the area to put a stop to an increase
in anti-social behaviour
because of public drinking.
This came after a petition,
with more than 170 signatures
from residents, was in support
of introducing a liquor ban.
Photographic evidence of
alcohol-related incidents were
also used to support the investigation.
In August this year, Mc-
Mahon lodged an appeal
to the decision granting an
off-licence to Super Liquor
Woolston on Ferry Rd.
The store is located in a high
deprived area, and there are 12
off-licences within 2km.
Senior Sergeant Roy Appley
said there was a lot of online
discussion about crime and
incidents, but that was not
borne out in reported incidents
to the police.
The statistics showed
Woolston had low level issues
regarding intimidating behaviour
from rough sleepers, he
added.
At this point, Appley said
the statistics did not warrant a
policing team in Woolston.
Police have confirmed there
are no current plans to set up
one.
The second meeting will
be held at the Woolston
Community Library at 5pm
Volunteer brigade opens new fire station
• By Geoff Sloan
SUMNER WAS buzzing last week
as New Zealand’s newest fire
station opened its doors.
The Sumner Fire Station was
badly damaged during the 2011
earthquakes, but has now been
completely replaced as part of
a $78 million redevelopment of
stations in greater Christchurch,
by Fire and Emergency New
Zealand.
Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade
chief fire officer Daryl Sayer said
they took possession of the facility
last week.
“Everyone’s been so excited.
The crew’s been really keen to
get in and we’ve are now into
our second week of being in
the station and everyone’s
smiling, they’re really loving
being here”.
The $3 million purpose-built
station will house a fire truck and
four-wheel-drive support vehicle.
The modern facility includes
decontamination facilities, a
dedicated locker room, workshop
areas, laundry, office and storage
spaces.
Sayer has welcomed the
upgrades, and points out the area
the brigade covers, is a lot more
diverse than the metropolitan
zones.
“We do have a lot more hill
areas of course, we’ve got walking
tracks and people like to head out
here in the weekend and go for a
walk or bike or whatever. And a lot
of our calls are actually retrieving
people from those tracks”.
The last two rebuilds as part
of FENZ’s redevelopment
programme are currently under
way, for volunteer stations in
Kaiapoi and Kaikoura.
Jetty repair starts
• By Geoff Sloan
WORK IS NOW under way to
rebuild an historic 148-year-old
jetty at Governors Bay.
THe ambitious project
comes after a seven-year
battle by residents to save their
historic icon from deteriorating
further.
Governors Bay was one of the
earliest settlements on Lyttelton
Harbour, and the jetty has been
a feature of the area since being
built in 1874.
However, the wooden structure
didn’t fare well in the February
22, 2011 earthquake with
a post-earthquake inspection
finding it structurally unsafe.
Residents were upset with the
inaction over its restoration,
rallying together in 2015 to take
on the big task of repairing it.
THey formed the Governors
Bay Jetty Restoration Trust,
which then approached the city
council with its plan to restore
the jetty to its former glory.
Trust chair Prue Miller says
the restoration project was a
challenge.
“It was it was quite difficult
because as we were trying to
go to tender and negotiate with
council late last year at that time
when construction costs were
just rocketing and each week the
TASK: Governors Bay Jetty Restoration Trust chair Prue
Miller is happy work to rebuild the jetty has finally started.
costs were changing.”
However, their persistence
paid off, and after lengthy
discussions the city council
agreed to pay half of the $3.5
million required to rebuild the
jetty.
THat left the other $1.75
million to be raised by the
trust. The team are now
halfway towards their goal,
but still have another $750,000
to find.
THe rebuild of the 300m jetty
is expected to be completed
around March next year.
Only the distance
uphill was counted
• From page 1
Luke, of Middleton Grange
School, rallied some of his mates
– Kiki Anglem, of Hillview
Christian School, and Silas Jones,
of Cashmere High School – to
complete the Everest Challenge
over the weekend and raise the
funds to help the children in the
orphanage.
Their aim was to ride the height
of Mt Everest from sea level –
8848m.
What they achieved was riding
270km horizontally and 8886m
vertically over 20.5 hours spread
out over Saturday and Sunday.
This was the second time they
attempted the challenge, but the
first was just for fun and they
only made it about 7500m.
They cycled up Mt Pleasant Rd
to the top, then dropped down
through Evans Pass down to Lyttelton,
and then went up again.
Sometimes, if the road was quiet,
they would cycle Lyttelton to Evans
Pass and back to Lyttelton.
The climbers only counted the
metres uphill, not downhill.
They were occasionally joined
by some of their mates and
fathers.
To keep them fed and energised,
Luke’s father, Greg Jansen,
put on a barbecue with sausages,
eggs and hash browns. The boys
were pretty tired at the end, but
still chirpy.
The initial goal was to raise
$1000, but the boys raised more
than $2500 – and still counting.
Luke will be leaving for the
orphanage tomorrow, both to
help them out and to give them
the money that was raised.
Clarence has connected people for more than 800 years, from highly organised
Maori settlements at the Pacific mouth to up-country trails through Molesworth and
carved out by earthquakes and the thrust of steep mountain ranges. People who
work this rugged country understand that no one truly ‘breaks in’ the Clarence. It’s
always a wild place, spiked with danger for those who take it for granted. It’s also
country that breeds and nurtures incredible characters, like the musterers who keep
coming to these stations for seasonal work until their legs, hips and backs can
give no more. For these men and women, the grandeur and solitude of the back
country is an addiction. The Clarence: People and Places of Waiau Toa captures
the breathtaking majesty of this rugged region and the epic stories it holds.
by Kieran E. Scott.
protein groups, baking and desserts, each recipe is accompanied by Emmett’s perso¬nal guide.
Bushline - A memoir
by Robbie Burton
Robbie Burton is a tramper and book publisher, who has had a life-long passion for the wild
places of New Zealand. In his deeply personal memoir Bushline, he reflects on his early life, his
adventures in the outdoors, and how this interest has been interwoven into his career at the helm
of Potton & Burton, one of New Zealand’s largest independent publishers.
something fresh and new, or you’re entertaining friends and family, Miss Polly’s Kitchen has the
3. Flavour, flavour, flavour.
Miss Polly’s Kitchen delivers seriously delicious food, ideally suited to the way we eat today.
Concussion by former rugby international
Michael Lipman - and Frankie Lipman
This is the concussion book everyone has to read. Concussion has become one of the biggest
issues to face contact sports. Only in the past decade have the consequences of repeated head
knocks become better known and the science is still rapidly catching up. With the discovery of
CTE or Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy in the brains of deceased football players it is now
known that the onset of a form of dementia caused by repeated concussions can strike people
as young as those in their thirties and forties. This is what has happened to Michael Lipman
a former rugby international who came out in public in 2018 as having had a diagnosis of
early-onset dementia and probable CTE. For Michael the damage was already done before he
met Frankie. He was a retired footballer in his late thirties prone to some moments of bizarre
behaviour and memory loss when they fell in love. Since then they have become parents together
during a period in which Michael’s challenges have grown and grown. They now face a future of
living with Michael’s degenerative brain condition and their purpose in writing this book is to give
a wake-up call to contact sports and to parents with children considering playing them. Their
book is a mix of personal story and scientific inquiry.
Linwood pool celebrates one year of operation
TWELVE MONTHS on from
its opening, Te Pou Toetoe:
Linwood Pool is proving a big hit
with the local community.
More than 135,000 people
have splashed in the pools and
about 8000 workouts have been
sweated out with the fitness
team.
City council
head of
recreation,
sports and
events Nigel
Cox said it has
been fantastic
to see many
Nigel Cox
people using
the facility.
“We wanted Te Pou Toetoe:
Linwood Pool to be a place
where individuals and families,
community groups and school
children could come together to
connect, to swim, to play and to
learn and that is exactly what is
has become.”
Many people have also made
use of the community rooms
that are available for hire for
meetings and private gatherings.
Recently, the pool’s women’s
Wednesday sessions has won
a merit award for aquatics
innovations from Recreation
Aotearoa.
Said Cox: “It was recognition
of the positive outcomes of
providing a session for women
who may prefer to swim in a
However, it was not the only
award the facility has picked up
in the past year.
The complex, which was built
for the city council by Apollo
Projects, also won the gold
award in the tourism and leisure
category of the construction
industry’s New Zealand Commercial
“It has been a great first year
for Te Pou Toetoe: Linwood Pool
and we are excited for what the
future holds for this wonderful
community facility,’’ Cox said.
Festival keeps shining a light on diversity
A COMMUNITY-based early
childhood centre in Woolston
has hosted a cultural festival to
celebrate its diversity.
Kimihia Early Learning
Centre marked its fifth annual
Diwali festival last week, with
participation from its pupils and
the community.
Centre manager Radhika
Chakrabarti said the celebration
provides the children with a
broad world-view, equipping
them with a diverse lens to see
the ever-changing face of the
community.
“It also enhances identity and
culture of children of Indian
origin and creates a sense of
belonging for them.”
Diwali – a festival of light –
celebrates the triumph of good
over evil, light over darkness and
the renewal of life.
The event included a henna art
session and a performance by the
pupils, followed by a traditional
Indian meal of chickpea curry,
potato curry, mango lassi,
basmati rice, naan bread and
poppadoms.
A prominent young leader
in Christchurch’s Indian
community, Rohan Chakrabarti
also attended the celebration
to explain to the pupils the
significance of Diwali and its
relevance to modern lives.
A&P SHOW: Cassels Brewery has come on board as the
anchor sponsor of the NZ Agricultural Show.
Cassels Brewery major show sponsor
THE CANTERBURY A&P
Association has signed beer
brewer Cassels Brewery as the
anchor sponsor for the show
grounds.
The deal comes with the local
association needing to service
a $1 million loan from the city
council.
The 10-year loan was provided
to the organisers of the NZ
Agricultural Show following the
Covid lockdowns and the effects
on income with no spectators for
the last two NZ shows.
Show general manager Tracy
Ahern said the three-year
deal with Cassels Brewery is
crucial for the future of the
association.
“Without the support, we
would be struggling to meet our
key performance indicators to
pay back our loan that we owe to
the council,” said Ahern.
“We are very excited to have
them on board . . . a local iconic
brand like our own.”
Cassels Brewery will feature
prominently at the show, the
biggest week of the year in
Christchurch, from November
9-11.
“They will be on our members’
marquee . . . on our corporate
hosting and they are bringing
their Cassels bus along, which
will be exciting,” said Ahern.
There will also be the Cassels
Baabaa bar and evening
entertainment for the first time
at the show, from Tuesday to
Friday night.
“We have got TikiTane, lots of
bands and music, mechanical
bull, paint by numbers,” said
Ahern.
There will also be a barbecue
competition.
While Ahern won’t reveal how
much the sponsorship deal is
worth for commercial reasons,
she says it is “significant”.
“We can’t rely on one week of
income a year.
“Our challenge is to put
Canterbury A&P Association
and the show in a far sounder
financial position by forming
new relationships with
businesses that share our vision.”
Cassels Brewery chief
executive Marshall Moir says
they are thrilled to support
CAPA and to help bring the A&P
show back to the community.
“As a family-owned
Christchurch business, we’re
really excited by the plans the
show team have for this year.
The focus on local, quality and
craftsmanship are the values that
are most important to us,” said
Moir.
It was only six months ago
Cassels Brewery lost its company
founder and developer Alasdair
Cassels.
The 71-year-old died in April.
Cassels is well known for
his investment in the brewery
after the February 22, 2011,
earthquake and after 100 days
their structurally sound but
broken brewery was reborn to
include a bar, café, music venue
and restaurant.
Your Local MP for Banks Peninsula
Tracey
McLellan
I shared the deep sadness that
New Zealanders felt at the passing
of Queen Elizabeth II. The one-off
public holiday on 26 September was
an opportunity to reflect as a nation
on the loss of our longest serving and
much-loved Sovereign. I did so at the
Christchurch memorial service – a very
moving ceremony.
The long weekend ended on a celebratory
note. I was lucky enough to attend
the opening night of the Cashmere
High School’s production of Jesus
Christ Superstar. There were some
stellar performances and my sincere
congratulations to all the performers,
Shaunn, Bianca and the rest of the crew.
Recent non-theatrical school visits
have included Te Raekura Redcliffs and
St Anne’s in Woolston, pillars of their
community with wonderful staff and
happy students.
Speaking of happy students, a Labour
initiative – the free lunches in schools
programme – has had its two year
anniversary. To date, the programme has
provided 63 million healthy lunches to
220,000 students across New Zealand,
giving children more energy to learn
and easing cost pressures on families.
It makes a real difference in our local
communities and it’s more than just
lunch - it’s also about sharing good food
together and it provides a great lesson
about community values!
Rotary Ferrymead gave me a lovely
welcome recently. It was a good
opportunity to thank them for
the fantastic work they do in our
communities and for me to share what it
means to represent Banks Peninsula.
Just down the road at the Mt Pleasant
Community Centre there is always
something exciting happening and my
visits in September were no exception.
The much anticipated return of Food
Truck Alley after a winter hiatus did
not disappoint. Add to this the weekly
markets and plethora of one-off events
and it is easy to see why the centre is such
a thriving space.
By the time this goes to print I will
also have held a community clinic for
Governors Bay and Diamond Harbour
residents, visited the Governors Bay
Jetty to get an update on its restoration,
attended a meeting to discuss what the
SailGP event in 2023 means for Lyttelton
and the wider community, and checked
in on the wonderful work being done
by Pest Free Banks Peninsula. It’s a busy
time of year, but it’s also incredibly
rewarding and I wouldn’t have it any
other way!
Treasures from the Past:
A remarkable penguin
Stuffed Emperor penguin in glass and wood case (left). Te Ūaka The Lyttelton Museum
ref.23.1 https://www.teuaka.org.nz/online-collection/469990
SAFE IN storage at the Air Force
Museum of New Zealand, along
with the rest of Te Ūaka The
Lyttelton Museum’s collection,
this taxidermied emperor
penguin in a glass display
case was rescued from the old
museum building prior to its
demolition in 2011.
The emperor penguin (Aptenodytes
forsteri) is the world’s
largest penguin species – both
sexes reach a height of 1.1-1.3m
and a weight of 22-45kg at maturity.
The remarkable emperor
is endemic to Antarctica and can
lay claim to many other unique
qualities and behaviours. The
only bird species that breeds
during the Antarctic winter,
they are uniquely adapted to the
extremely harsh environment
where air temperatures can reach
-50 deg C, with wind speeds of
up to 200km/h.
The emperor’s distinctive ‘tuxedo’
of dark and light plumage
is made up of dense insulating
feathers, which also provide
excellent camouflage whilst at
sea. A layer of subdermal fat up
to 3cm thick ensures survival
for months of fasting during the
breeding season.
Feeding primarily on Antarctic
silverfish and also squid and
krill, emperors are adept divers,
able to stay underwater for up to
20 minutes to depths of 500m.
Along with their streamlined
bodies, they have several adaptations
that allow for this – their
bones are solid to reduce the
risks of barotrauma and they
have specially structured haemoglobin
for low oxygen levels.
Able to slow their heart rate to
15-20 beats per minute, they can
effectively reduce metabolism
and organ function.
Emperors are sociable birds
that congregate in 46 known colonies
of up to several thousand
individuals each around the Antarctic
continent. Most of these
are located on ‘fast’ ice (attached
to the land), protected somewhat
by sea cliffs or icebergs and with
openings to the sea via polynyas
– permanent openings in the sea
ice created by the action of wind
and currents. These allow essential
access to feeding grounds
during the arduous work of
incubating and rearing future
generations.
Breeding commences with
courtship rituals in March-April;
females lay a single, thick-shelled
egg in July-August, before
returning to sea to feed, having
exhausted their reserves. Adult
birds protect their eggs and later
the hatched chicks from the
freezing ground by holding them
on top of their broad feet against
a brood patch of featherless skin,
which wraps the precious cargo.
The transfer of egg from female
to male is a difficult operation
and many eggs are lost due to
cracking or freezing on the
ground.
If the crucial transfer is successful,
the male will protect the
egg for around 65 days until it
hatches. Huddling with other
males in a tight circle, backs to
the ferocious wind, the group
shuffle in a spiralling movement
sometimes referred to as a turtle
formation, allowing all an opportunity
at the warmest inner
positions.
Once hatched, chicks are fed
on the males’ crop milk for fourto-seven
days until the females
return from the sea – by this
stage the males weigh around
23kg, having lost nearly half
their body weight. The journey
to and from feeding grounds can
cover distances of 50-120km.
Until the chicks fledge in December,
the pair will take turns
at sea and in the colony, calling
with complex vocalisations for
their mate and fluffy silvery-grey
chick. If a chick is orphaned it
has no chance of survival; in
addition, due to predation by
Southern giant petrels and the
opportunism of the south polar
skua, less than 20 per cent of
chicks survive their first year of
life.
If an emperor gains maturity
and survives attack by leopard
seal or orca, a typical lifespan is
20 years. In 2009, the total population
was estimated at around
595,000 adult birds. The bird is
currently under consideration
for inclusion under the US Endangered
Species Act, as it is at
risk due to the effects of climate
change on food sources, habitat
destruction and, increasingly, the
impact of Antarctic tourism.
Apsley Cherry-Garrard, who
made a near-fatal journey from
Cape Evans to Cape Crozier in
the depths of winter 1911 with
Edward Wilson and Henry
Bowers, to collect emperor
penguin eggs for scientific
purposes, wrote in 1922: ‘Take
it all in all, I do not believe
anybody on earth has a worse
time than an emperor penguin’.
GOOD TO GO: Fish & Game New Zealand ranger Chris Aldous (left), checks
the licences of Warren Mackie, Russell Mackay and Neil Goldie at Harts
Creek.
Anglers out in force
on opening day
CANTERBURY anglers
were out in force on
Saturday to fish the first day
of the new season.
October 1 is always the
start of the new season, and
this year it fell on a Saturday
and was also the first
day of the school holidays.
This made opening day in
the region a popular family
affair in many instances.
Fish & Game New
Zealand rangers were out
checking compliance and
reported a lot of anglers
from the top of the Lewis
Pass all the way down to the
Waitaki River.
The weather was great
for fishing, frosty but clear,
throughout the region and
many anglers travelled
hours to fish their favourite
spots.
Canterbury angler Neil
Goldie braved the early
morning frost to fish the
Waimakariri River mouth.
Trying first for a sea-run
salmon, Goldie said: “It’s a
little bit early for a salmon, but
with warmer temperatures
at sea in summer, there’s a
chance of a salmon taking
advantage of the cooler waters
now to make a run.
“With it being the second
year of the sea-run salmon
season bag limit and the
harvest card, you have to
selectively harvest your
salmon, so fishing in cooler
waters will be great for the
fish if you need to release it.
“The sea-run salmon
fishery has moved to more
of a sports fishery than a
harvest fishery as anglers
do their bit to help the
recovery of the fishery,”
Goldie said.
Trout anglers in the Te
Waihora/Lake Ellesmere
area were out in numbers.
The scenic Harts Creek
was popular as the day progressed,
with many anglers
trying to tempt the elusive
fish inhabiting the creek.
With Te Waihora/Lake
Ellesmere open to the sea
at the moment, the Halswell,
L2, Selwyn Rivers and
Harts Creek were enticing
for many sea-run trout that
have entered the lake, making
the area a popular spot
for anglers.
Central South Island
Fish & Game officer Nicola
Dellaway spent her first day
on the job with colleagues
checking licences on Lake
Opuha, South Canterbury.
Forty anglers were
checked, mostly boat anglers
but a few shore-based.
This was a typical number
for this popular opening
day destination, with many
travelling from as far as
Dunedin and Christchurch.
The fishing was excellent,
with most anglers catching
two or three brown or
rainbow trout for the dinner
table.
Below State Highway 1 at
the Opihi River, father and
son anglers, Stephen and
Alfie Henly, went out on an
opening day mission.
In spite of the frosty start,
they both had luck, catching
and releasing some trout
caught on soft-bait lures.
Jet boat-based fishing is
a tradition on the Waitaki
River for opening, and
there were at least 18 boats
on the river in the morning.
ARA INSTITUTE OF CANTERBURY
Pasifika mum shows
how it’s done
Not so long ago, Epe Valavala was a
full-time, stay-at-home mum. Now, she’s
the proud recipient of a business degree
specialising in human resources and on a
mission to get more Pacific people into the
corporate world.
Epe’s accomplishment provides an
inspirational example — for her family, the
Pasifika community and mature students —
of what’s possible through study.
When Epe first visited Ara Institute
of Canterbury to enquire about its
study options, she literally had a baby
on her hip and needed to know if study
would fit around her lengthy list of daily
responsibilities. “I found out that the
scheduling at Ara worked perfectly for me
as a parent and I wouldn’t need to try to
attend one-hour, lecture-style classes,” she
says.
Epe admits that she was apprehensive
about the thought of being a mature student
among lots of young adults but discovered
she needn’t have worried. “The smaller
class sizes and the atmosphere at Ara let me
contribute my practical life experience to
the mix.”
Epe’s study experience was a revelation
in many ways. “From the classroom
experience to group work, presentations
and sleepless nights, it’s showed me my
worth, my capability and reminded me
of my purpose in life and the many great
things I want to achieve.”
One of those things is diving deeper
into human resources. “I want to be
able to weave in some more cultural and
sustainable practices because I believe if
those things are taught at your workplace,
they change the way you work, your
homelife and the way you teach your
children.”
Ultimately, Epe wants see more Pasifika
people in corporate roles. “Seeing more
people who look like us in the corporate
world will encourage others to get
into business and it will increase our
independence. It will also open more
doors for our people. That’s why I chose to
study business, and to specialise in human
resources.”
Epe “100%” encourages all single mums
out there to make the sacrifices needed
to study. “It’s hard work, but with a bit of
dedication it can be done, and at Ara you’re
surrounded by the right people, and you’re
well supported.”
study options, visit ara.ac.nz or call
22 Bay Harbour News Wednesday October 5 2022
Big push by Kia in EV market
THERE’S A BATTLE raging in
the new car market that I’m very
interested in, and it’s not just about
the total sales figures.
You see, there’s a battle within a
battle and it is in the fully electric
vehicle segment, those companies
that have EVs are fighting amongst
each other for market share.
Of course, the winners will
always be the companies that have
affordable cars for the mainstream
– Peugeot, MG and newcomer
BYD will fall into that category.
However, you can’t discount the
models landing here from South
Korea, Hyundai and Kia are both
well established in the EV market
and new models are landing on a
regular basis.
Kia has just introduced a
newcomer and it is simply badged
EV6, it’s part of a series of models
that will cover a broad spectrum
of the EV market. The EV6 isn’t
mainstream, its price tag from
$72,990 won’t lure Joe Average,
in fact the range-topping EV6 is
priced at $109,990. However, if you
are determined to buy into the EV6
there are two variants that list from
under $80k, and that will net you a
$5750 New Zealand Government
Clean Car Programme rebate. The
remaining three models in the lineup
are priced at $78,990, $94,990
and $106,990.
That’s quite an extensive range,
and if you are wondering where the
cost differences lie, the two entry
models have battery capacities of
58kW and 77.4kW respectively and
are rear-wheel-drive only, the rest
have the high power batteries and
have drive to all four corners, the
four-wheel-drive models utilising
two electric motors.
The EV6 can be described as a
crossover between sedan and a sport
utility vehicle, its design is spherical
and all enveloping, much like a
sedan, but with its height of 1.5m it
is tall and fits the SUV bracket.
All models have five seats only,
but they share a wealth of internal
space and comfort is high. The
EV6 is also minimalistic in its
layout. Don’t get me wrong, it has
a wealth of specification, yet it’s
all manipulated by simple dial
and push-button controls, you
may expect there to be a lot of
functions, but many of those that
would ordinarily be guided by
switches can be made electronically
through one of the central display
screens. The EV6 has a high
graphic percentage, and the logic
behind the touch surfaces is deep
yet intuitive.
I find it interesting that both
Kia and Hyundai offer the varying
power supplies for their flagship
electric models, the difference is
not just extra power on tap, but the
high output versions will take you
BOLD: The Kia EV6 has styling that complements the
technology inside and underneath the bonnet.
KIA EV6: Range of electric models that include rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive. Prices
start at $72,990
further.
The evaluation car was the
range-topper, and it is good for
almost 500km driving distance if
conditions are conducive to loadfree
motoring. If you feel more
comfortable topping up along the
way the EV6 will recharge from
10 to 80 per cent in around 18min
using a designated charge port.
My charging experience
consisted only of using the
domestic supply on my property.
Under those conditions the charge
time is quite lengthy – an overnight
charge will only net you a half tank,
so to speak. On a more positive
note, I used the EV6 as many
drivers would, when parked up
hook into the household supply
and just let it continually top up.
If found that on a standard suburb
to city commute it was more than
adequate to keep range plentiful.
What’s more, it comes with
decent charge cable length – almost
6m which meant it was long
enough for my unique situation.
The type 2 to type 2 cable (the one
for accessing charge ports) is also
quite lengthy, which means you
don’t have to get too close to the
structure and risk bumping into
it like I saw just recently when a
driver of a Tesla got too close.
As you would expect, the EV6
drives smoothly and quietly, there
• Price – Kia EV6 GT-Line
AWD, $112,990
• Dimensions – Length,
4635mm; width,
1890mm; height,
1605mm
• Configuration – Two
electric motors, fourwheel-drive,
225kW,
605Nm, automatic
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 5.2sec
are minor extraneous noises such
as wind and a slight roar off the
big tyres (255/45 x 20in), but its
movement is very hushed and I
guess that’s what you would want
and expect when buying an electric
vehicle.
Along with a lot of innercity
running around, I took the
evaluation car west towards
Darfield, returning via Burnham
and Lincoln. It is an adept highway
cruiser, it’s also very swift with a
standstill to 100km time of 5.2sec,
and it will lunge through a highway
overtake in 4.2sec (80-120km/h).
Those figures come from the
benefit of huge power figures –
225kW and over 600Nm of torque.
Not only is the massive amount
of torque something that supplies
that urgency, the EV6 also drives
like a sports car. It is firmish in the
suspension which always augurs
well when quick corners are
presented.
The steering loads up to provide
solid off-centre support with
plenty of feedback coming off the
front tyres. That’s the kind of feel
I like, the EV6 is fully involving
and covers distance like a sports
car. That is one of the benefits of
electric power, there’s no point
anywhere where acceleration isn’t
met with urgency. Of course, you
don’t have to drive the EV6 in sport
mode, it’s also happy plying the city
commute or every other day-to-day
dawdle.
There’s no doubt Kia is keen
to impress with its electric-only
line-up. The EV6 is futuristic,
yet it carries the electric vehicle
ingredients that will lure those who
don’t see fossil fuel in the future
of personal transport. How it all
plays out is something that I’ll
continue to keep an eye on, and
it’s interesting how the raft of
new electric vehicles are pitched
in terms of price, many are sitting
just below the 80k threshold
whereby owners can capitalise on
the rebate.
Where Memories are Made
40 Bay View Road, Moncks Bay/Redcliffs
4 bedrooms, 2 living, 2 bathrooms, 2 car garaging
Superbly refined and sympathetically modernised, this charming 1920s bungalow
merges family functionality with contemporary finesse to offer a supreme lifestyle
in Moncks Bay.
Cherished by the vendors for 20 years, they have relished raising their children in
this sought-after neighbourhood that lies so close to Sumner Beach.
Immaculately presented, the home retains much of its original character in the
form of lead lights and timber detailing, while a large-scale renovation in 2014
comprehensively attended to the complexities of modern living.
Not only was the kitchen modernised, but a tastefully executed extension
introduced a second living zone, a family bathroom, a fully equipped master suite
and a deck to the rear of the property, ensuring it could comfortably accommodate
growing families. The established garden frames the home beautifully.
This property will undoubtedly attract high levels of interest, and prospective
buyers should act with haste.
