Putting New Brighton
on the map – literally
A MAP HAS been launched
with the aim of encouraging
people to visit new places and
try new things in Greater New
Brighton.
A team of six local community
groups, with support from
ChristchurchNZ, has finished a
map featuring 101 free things to
do in the area.
It includes a wide range of
activities, from racing a BMX on
the pump track in Bottle Lake
Forest to feeding the eels at Anzac
Drive Reserve.
Manager of Youth Alive Trust
James Ridpath said the project
was first mooted five years ago
and slowly came together over
the years.
“You don’t need to spend
money to have fun in our area –
we hope our map inspires people
to visit new places, try new
things and love this community
even more.”
The groups involved were New
Brighton Pier and Foreshore
Society, Youth Alive Trust, Te
Waka Aroha, South Brighton
Playcentre, and Wellbeing New
Brighton.
Esther Perriam, from the New
Brighton Pier and Foreshore
Society, said the team would love
to see the maps stuck to peoples’
fridges.
“So when the kids say: ‘I’m
bored,’ you grab the map, point
to a random number, and off you
go to try it. I wonder if any family
will be able to tick off all 101
activities?”
The maps are being distributed
through local schools,
community groups, and New
Brighton Library.

Dallington stays out of orbit

DALLINGTON residents are
“disappointed” as the Orbiter
bus is unlikely to return
anytime soon.
Environment Canterbury
said restoring the Orbiter is an
option that will be considered
in future public transport programme
of route changes.
However, consultation with
the communities along the
route will not take place until
2025/2026 financial year.
For many people in the area,
it is a long time away.
Dallington Community
Trust chairperson David Collins
said residents are suffering
from limited bus services.
“The current bus route is
such an infrequent service. It
doesn’t operate late at night,
especially in the weekend. This
means that people living in
Dallington don’t have much
option but to take much more
expensive options like Uber or
taxi.”
Collins also said the bus
stops are some distance away
from where many residents
live.
An ECan spokeperson said
it is planning to review the bus
services through Dallington
in 2024.
“Environment Canterbury
is in the process of reviewing
routes and service levels to
improve the network across
ROUTE: The Orbiter will not be returning to Dallington any time soon, ECan has
confirmed.

the city, and ensure it is fit-forpurpose

and climate change mitigation.”
Following the earthquakes,
ECan has received a number of
enquiries about the Orbiter in
Dallington.
While the decision to retain
the current route may disappoint
Dallington residents,
ECan said it will prevent putting
the high number of users
between Gloucester St and
North Avon Rd at a disadvantage.
“Many of the users at these
stops had a much higher number
proportion of SuperGold
users compared to the rest of
the network.”
Bus stops in Dallington
recorded a daily average of 5.7
passengers between January
and August this year, with

the stop near the corner of
Gayhurst Rd and Mcbratneys
Rd recorded an average of 12.4
passengers per day.
However, these numbers
were below the average of 18.9
passengers across the network.
Said Collins: “They say
that passenger number is not
enough to upgrade the service,
but then they don’t get an
increase in passenger numbers
because they don’t upgrade it.”

A LEAKY ROOF at the
New Brighton Community
Garden’s centre has been
replaced.
About 20 staff at a locallyowned
roofing business put
their hands up to give the
building a new $20,000 roof
for free last weekend.
Funding manager Lin
Klenner said staff, volunteers
and trustees at the garden
are still in ‘disbelieved’ by
the generosity of the team at
Graham Hill Roofing.
She initially thought it was
the skylights that needed to be
replaced.
However, project manager
of Graham Hill Roofing Dylan
Frapwell told Klenner the entire
roof would need a redo as
it was full of rust and holes.
Realising it was not a quick
not easy fix, she asked if he
could back up the roof with a
roll of duct tape to cover the
‘worst’ holes.
Said Klenner: “It turns out
he developed a soft spot for the
garden and what it represented,
and also was not convinced
about the duct tape.”
Frapwell then told his manager
that he wanted to help the
garden out and do this over
the weekend on his own.
This prompted a meeting
with staff at the company,
where a number of them volunteered
to give the garden a
new roof.
In spite of rising demands
for the garden, Klenner said
securing funding to increase
staff hours has been a struggle.
Two part-time staff has been
employed and funded through
multiple funding and charities.
“Maintenance cost are a
struggle too as funding can often
be secured for new projects
but not for the ongoing costs
to run things.”
Started in 2005, the garden
is now a hub of activities
where volunteers contribute
their time in the garden in exchange
for fresh vegetables and
good company.

Second meeting planned to
address antisocial behaviour

ANOTHER BID is being made to
find out how prevalent antisocial
behaviour is in the Woolston
shopping area.
Police and community leaders
want residents and business
owners to tell them what they
are seeing in order to plan what
actions might need to be taken.
The first meeting was held
by Banks Peninsula MP Tracey
McLellan and Woolston
residents in May this year.
However, it was destined to fail
as McLellan said only two people
turned up for the meeting.
She said the community needs
to be the driver for getting a
Neighbourhood Policing Team.
An alcohol ban was among
other initiatives proposed
by Woolston residents and
community leaders to combat
crime.
Resident Paul McMahon said
alcohol-related harm has been an
ongoing issue in the community.
Last month, the city
council decided to investigate
implementing an alcohol ban
in the area to put a stop to an
increase in anti-social behaviour
because of public drinking.
This came after a petition,

with more than 170 signatures
from residents, was in support of
introducing a liquor ban.
Photographic evidence
of alcohol-related incidents
were also used to support the
investigation.
In August this year, McMahon
lodged an appeal to the decision
granting an off-licence to Super
Liquor Woolston on Ferry Rd.
The store is located in a high
deprived area, and there are 12
off-licences within 2km.
Senior Sergeant Roy Appley
said there was a lot of online
discussion about crime and
incidents, but that was not borne
out in reported incidents to the
police.
The statistics showed Woolston
had low level issues regarding
intimidating behaviour from
rough sleepers, he added.
At this point, Appley said
the statistics did not warrant a
policing team in Woolston.

Linwood pool celebrates one year of operation

its opening, Te Pou Toetoe:
Linwood Pool is proving a big hit
with the local community.
More than 135,000 people
have splashed in the pools and
about 8000 workouts have been
sweated out with the fitness
team.

Linwood Pool to be a place
where individuals and families,

children could come together to
connect, to swim, to play and to

Many people have also made
use of the community rooms
that are available for hire for
meetings and private gatherings.
Recently, the pool’s women’s
Wednesday sessions has won
a merit award for aquatics
innovations from Recreation
Aotearoa.
Said Cox: “It was recognition
of the positive outcomes of providing
a session for women who
may prefer to swim in a womenonly
environment.’’
However, it was not the only

Canterbury athletes
take part in two-day
sports festival
THE HALBERG Games
South – a regional, twoday
sports festival for
physically disabled and
visually impaired young
people – took place last
weekend in Christchurch.
Hosted by the Halberg
Foundation, this was the
first time the games were
held regionally, due to
the national event being
cancelled earlier this year
because of Covid-19.
The South event saw
over 80 athletes compete
in four local regional
teams at Nga Puna Wai
Sports Hub and Rangi
Ruru Girls School.
The games gave the participants
the opportunity
to represent their region
for two days of sporting
competition, team camaraderie
and fun.
With support of their
local Parafeds and disability
sport organisations,
athletes represented Tasman,
Canterbury (Parafed
Canterbury), South Canterbury,
Otago (Parafed
Otago) and Southland
(Inclusive Activity Murihiku
Southland).
Over 12 sports were on
offer during the weekend,
including athletics, wheelchair
sports, basketball,
gymnastics and boccia.
Awards were presented
to athletes and supporters
for their efforts across the
weekend.
New Brighton’s Seaside Market is a true
community affair and a fun way to start
your Saturday.
Come and experience their warm
and inviting atmosphere with live
entertainment, delicious food, a large
variety of stalls, activities for tamariki, and
free face painting.
After the market take a stroll along the
beach. Or visit the beach-side playground.
Have a drink on the Level One balcony
where you can watch the bustling market
activities below.
The market stall fees are used to
contribute to the running of the market
and any funds left over are reinvested into
New Brighton Project’s other community
initiatives.

New Brighton
The new tenant by
the bridge
New Brighton may have
noticed a full-sized figure
near a fence by the Seaview
Road bridge enthusiastically
welcoming people into the
wonderful coastal paradise
of New Brighton.
The swine man is resin
and metal and is a creation
of artist Donald Paterson.
Paterson has moved into
central New Brighton and
is an artist/sculptor/raconteur larger than
life character known in various parts
of Aotearoa, for his three-dimensional
characters that are adding charm to towns
across the country.
After almost a lifetime generating works
of art and challenging conventions, people
are heartened by his positivity about his
new environment alongside the Ōtakaro-
Avon River and within walking distance
to the Mall.
This artist began his career at 12 years
of age when he sold his first painting.
He has designed a massive demonic
iron train which played a big part in
making Oamaru the steampunk capital
of the country, and one of the most
photographed objects in the town.
He took the old and tired local railway
station and turned part of
it into Oamaru’s Prehistoric
World.
Aside from his fantastical
creations Paterson is known
for many statures of real or
symbolic people and these
are dotted from Thames to
Akaroa.
He sculpted Captain
Henry Cain, one of Timaru’s
first residents now sitting
in front of the town’s historic Landing
Service Building.
He created a life-sized statue of an
8th Regiment New Zealand Mounted
Rifle Soldier in Fairlie, and the Waimate
bushman to pay homage to the town’s
sawmilling history and the man and the
plough was destined for Ashburton.
Although only there for nine years,
Oamaru as a tourist attraction owes
a great deal to the whimsical mind of
Donald Paterson. Along with the muchphotographed
diesel loco, he designed the
steampunk playground and the Gallery
café.
Donald Paterson is not conventional
and thinks outside the square. He is
talented, passionate, puts places on the
map, and is living in New Brighton.

Lifeguard
season gears up
Lifeguard season is in full swing as the
New Brighton Surf Living Saving Club
has started their information meetings
for anyone interested in training as a
lifeguard.
The beach patrols add a layer of safety
for swimmers while enjoying their beach
activities, although swimmers need to be
aware of ocean conditions at all times.
The club has a long history and is
the oldest surf lifesaving club in New
Zealand, formed back in July 1910 and
continues to provide an invaluable
community service in the form of
voluntary lifeguard patrols.
Every weekend starting in mid-
November to March the club puts out
it’s red and yellow flags on the New
Brighton beach between the hours
of 11am and 5pm giving the pubic a
safeguarded place to swim over the
summer months.
Remember to swim between the flags.
Stay safe and questions ask our friendly
volunteer patrollers.
