A MESSAGE FROM THE CEO
The Year Ahead.
We found ourselves in complex times ... again! Just as the pandemic
seems to be under control we are now in an energy and inflation crisis -
affecting the economy, businesses, and consumers. Again, this would be
a stimulus to the digital transformation plans and efficiency efforts that
mobile is driving. However, our industry is also a big energy user -
demanding roughly 2 to 3% of the total world consumption. Energy
weights for 20% to 40% of OPEX in mobile operators. A wider look at
efficiency is required by the ecosystem.
How is Mobile Ecosystem Forum supporting the industry? First, we
launched our Sustainable Future program back in June at our MEF
CONNECTS Business Messaging in Amsterdam. A program managed by
MEF Advisor Gerrit Jan Konijnenberg. We will continue to discuss the
topic – reach out to Gerrit or the team at MEF if you would like to be
more involved in this initiative.
While the theme of operational efficiency is now permeating much of
the ecosystem – there is a lot happening in innovation, regulation, and
competition. True to the requests from our members from the AGM in
November 2021, MEF has spent much of 2022 bringing people and
companies together. Efficiency does not mean shutting your businesses
to the outside world, instead it is an incentive to explore more, to find
better ways. In 2022 the Mobile Ecosystem Forum offered 21 face to
face events free to its members (in 11 different cities), plus 2 online
conferences, 12 webinars, 12 industry roundtables, 113 online working
groups and 17 partner conferences (with discounted tickets its
members).
We have not stopped our research and analysis with over 15
reports and 2 surveys on consumers and enterprises and 166 blog
posts. Our website was visited by 125,000 professionals in the
industry so far in the year. In addition, MEF powers one of the
highest regarded Protection Registries for SMS Phishing in 3
countries, and the two major global Code of Conducts in Business
Messaging and Mobile VAS. I think our members can see the value
that this association is bringing to them, and the efficiency that a
true not-for-profit can bring to the market. Nevertheless,
MM/YYYYY
we
| ISSUE NO. XX
should not look back but forward to 2023, join our Annual General
Meeting online or in person on the 29 th of November to share your
vision of what MEF should be doing next.
In our quarterly magazine you will find some of the latest hot
topics we have covered in the last month: Private Networks, IoT
Best Practices, Personal Data, RCS, STIR SHAKEN. And you will find
more about our recent successful events. It is a great time for
MEF, we have received very positive feedback in the last 30 days
from Berlin, Sao Paulo, and Las Vegas as well as for our 3rd
Wholesale online conference. We are looking forward to more
interactions with members in Cape Town and London in the
4 th quarter of the year and get ready for January for our first MEF
CONNECTS in Kuala Lumpur looking at the world of Mobile
Content.
A new MEF initiative was launched in Las Vegas: Doug Makishima
from Summit Tech is reviewing business applications on the new
5G Edge solution – a major network innovation that is starting to
see some promising opportunities. The Personal Data & Identity
team has requested comments on the whitepaper for age
verification in digital. A new roundtable for Scandinavian operators
about Business Messaging was started as well.
There is plenty happening, and we are hoping to receive more
ideas and suggestions for new initiatives. Write to me
at dario@mobileecosystemforum.com.
MEF CONNECTS LATAM
Since MEF’s inception Latin America has been a focus as a region
of exciting new developments and opportunities across the
mobile ecosystem. In 2021 we hosted the first MEF CONNECTS
LATAM online-event. It was hugely successful with requests to do
more in the region.
For MEF CONNECTS LATAM 2022 we featured sessions in both
Portuguese and English and took a deep dive into what is new in
mobile Payments, Enterprise Communications, Personal Data,
MEF MEET UP AFRICA
AfricaCom, the Africa Tech Festival, is quite simply the largest
digital infrastructure event in Africa and after several years of
meeting online only, the event is back with a real bang this year!
The core agenda and exhibition will take place November 8th to
10th inclusive in-person (with its partner programmes and digital
content on November 7th and 11th) and the MEF team will be
there.
On the evening of November 7th we’ve got a MEF Meet-Up lined
up for you from 5pm to 9pm at the Radisson RED Hotel in Cape
Town. We’ve taken over the whole RED rooftop bar and terrace
and look forward to welcoming 90 MEF members for a lovely
evening of networking.
A real perk of full MEF membership is being able to attend physical
MEF events for free and, as always, places will be offered on an
equitable first come, first served basis. We’ll be limiting the number
of people from each company to ensure balance throughout.
If you’re going to be in Cape Town on November 7th and are a
FRAUD & SECURITY
Future of Messaging Fraud & Revenue Assurance given the
interest MEF members had in A2P Voice Flash Calling and the
fact there was so little awareness of it across the industry,
members have worked together on a fantastic educational
piece detailing exactly what it is and the challenges and
opportunities it offers. The sub-group’s work is almost
concluded, and we hope to be able to get the material
published in the coming several weeks. The issues of both
Artificial Traffic Generation and Artificial Traffic Inflation are now
coming up a lot in discussions and proving to be an area of
focus. Work around securing the SMS channel and monetising
A2P SMS for MNOs is a recurring, ongoing theme. Please don’t
forget that the Fraud Framework is a great resource, detailing
the 14 known types of SMS fraud and you are free to share it
with anybody you want. This will be modified later this year and
a v.4 created to take into account a new 15 th type of SMS fraud
identified. Contact James for more information about this
.The Fraud Framework was reframed to focus on definitions
SOUTH AFRICA
The project is designed to bring together SABRIC (banking
association), MNOs, MEF members and other trade association
in South Africa to combat the scourge of fraud driven by SMS in
particular. SABRIC provided a new point of contact to MEF who
has been most helpful and now the only sticking point
is COMRIC, the organisation bringing all the operators in South
Africa together. They have a new CEO incoming so hopefully
this will improve the situation. No response from COMRIC as yet.
This group will be run by MEF’s team member down in Cape
information.
Please note also that AfricaCom 2022 will be taking place in
The most recent meeting focused on security in the mobile
roaming connectivity environment. As the industry is shifting
technology from 2-3G to 4G to 5G, and fraud is becoming
more sophisticated than ever, there is a real need for the
industry to get together and identify security solutions
MM/YYYYY
that
| ISSUE NO. XX
allows players to not only protect their IPX infrastructure and
roaming interconnections, but also help them tackle new
business opportunities. Some of the questions Andras Levak
from Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier and Ewout Pronk
from Titan.ium Platform LLC took away for their upcoming panel
discussion during the MEF Connects Wholesale slot were:
• Cloud providers, Cloudification: how does virtualization impact
5G security?
• Devices: considering 5G interconnect will be a lot more
secure compared to previous generation, will there be more
security risk on 5G devices?
• IOT: what are the specific security risks for IOT devices, IOT
traffic and are there different security measures designed
for IOT?
• Operator expectations: what kind of services and solutions
will operators get from security providers/IPX providers?
Both the video recording and the slides from the call are
available in the member resources. Answers to the questions
STIR SHAKEN: The Evolution of Fighting
Robocalls in North America
Globally, telecom users have been putting up with Robocalls, or
nuisance calls for years. The USA and Canada introduced a
form of call origin verification capability: knowing where the call
was coming from could help stop unwanted and fraudulent MM/YYYYY calls | ISSUE NO. XX
reach the final consumers – based on a collection of standards
referred to as STIR SHAKEN.
Different levels of protection have been rolled out, but the
problem seems to persist, causing some to ask, should we allow
more time for STIR SHAKEN to mature or is it time to check the
lessons learnt and optimise the model?
We asked these questions to three experts in the field:
TITLE HERE
• Matthew Gamble, Principal at INT13 Consulting and a deep
understanding about Canada
• Eric Priezkalns, Chief Executive at the Risk & Assurance Group,
and a critic of the North American policy implementation
• George Cray, Senior VP of Information Solutions, Products and
Services at iconectiv, one of the main enablers of the STIR
SHAKEN technical solution
TITLE HERE
Robocalls still exists in North America and STIR SHAKEN did not
prove to be the magic bullet that some were hoping for. More
realistically, the launch of the technology is now generating insight
on the implementation strategies and the regulatory policies
require by this tool.
Nowadays, information provided from STIR SHAKEN is powering
more strategies and solutions to fight fraudulent traffic. The
application of STIR SHAKEN is evolving and in some instance it is
becoming more of a fraud tracing tool, or a potential blocking
solution. And while USA and Canada did not completely stop
robocalls, France is now also adopting this technology.
STIR SHAKEN is still the main reference point in theMM/YYYYY market, | ISSUE NO. XX
however, the industry needs to reflect and understand more how
to use this tool. The interconnected nature of the telecom system
is its main strength but also a challenge here – could more be done
to support an international solution?
What it’s like to work in cybersecurity
for DCB
MEF Director of Programmes James Williams
speaks to David Lotfi, CEO of mobile payments
cyber security specialists, Evina about the
history of the company and the state of the DCB
ecosystem today and in the future.
MM/YYYYY | ISSUE NO. XX
You are known in the ecosystem as the CEO and founder of Evina.
Can you tell us more about yourself and how you came to start
Evina?
I am a telecom engineer. At the very beginning of my career, I
interned at a Parisian startup that sold services via DCB, stayed
there for a while, worked my way up and soon became the CTO. In
2013, particularly pernicious fraud schemes started to appear on
the market, which had a strong impact on our business.
With my team at the time, I developed a dedicated anti-fraud
solution. This project was a great success and soon several MNOs
asked me if they could use my solution as they realized that only
our DCB services didn’t generate any complaints. I was convinced
that it needed to be developed further because cybersecurity had
become a necessity to ensure longevity of the DCB payment
world. I bought full ownership of the technology and founded Evina
with those who had helped me make this disruptive technology a
reality.
Carrier billing is a promising industry, but very often it develops
under the radar of the start-up world and VCs. You have recently
raised more than 20 million euros from an American VC. How did
you get their attention?
Forward-thinking VCs understand the advantages that DCB has
over other payment methods and that in a competitive
environment, betting on DCB makes a lot of sense. DCB is a
payment method that offers conversion rates up to 10 times
higher than that of credit cards, allows seamless payment flows
and ensures a particularly high level of user data protection. The
only missing piece in many parts of the world is cybersecurity
though.
TITLE HERE
The first action that truly allows DCB to flourish in regions where
DCB is booming is always cybersecurity. We are fortunate to have
partnered with a fund that is perfectly aligned with our vision: DCB
will become one of the main payment methods of the future and
its extreme security will make this possible. This is a great sign for
You’ve now been working in the DCB industry for more than 15
years. What are the key changes in the industry you’ve seen over
the years?
This experience allowed me to personally experience the first
golden age of DCB and then the eruption of fraud. This era
created a real movement of solidarity and collaboration between
the players in the sector. We’ve seen operators join forces to
create best practices and set up self-regulation systems MM/YYYYY for the | ISSUE NO. XX
sector through the creation of professional associations. We have
seen the emergence of working groups on cybersecurity issues in
the DCB etc. Whilst all this is a positive step, I believe this isn’t
enough. A lot more needs to be done.
A real polarization of the sector between those players who are
betting on DCB and its full security through both regulatory
framework and technical means and those who rely on the
regulatory framework alone has emerged. This is true at both the
operator and country level. The operators who gain the most
market share are those who invest and secure their payment
methods by using state-of-the-art technology, and the countries
where DCB is most successful are the countries where it is best
protected.
“Forward-thinking VCs understand the advantages that DCB has
over other payment methods and that in a competitive
environment, betting on DCB makes a lot of sense. DCB is a
payment method that offers conversion rates up to 10 times
higher than that of credit cards, allows seamless payment flows
and ensures a particularly high level of user data protection. The
only missing piece in many parts of the world is cybersecurity“
TITLE HERE
Why have the regulatory efforts and the self-discipline of the
industry players not been enough to stop the fraud?
Because we are talking about a technology area for which the law
or best practice recommendations alone can only be expected to
provide a partial solution. Fraud has become automated and
cybercriminals have rapidly developed new forms of attacks, by
hacking DCB using advanced malware. It’s therefore necessary to
provide a technological solution capable of adapting continuously
and enforcing regulations. This means significant and ongoing
investments over a period of years to be able to identify new
forms of fraud and to stop them in their tracks.
INTERVIEW
41
What is the real impact on players who are not fully aware of this
technical fraud?
The most immediate impact is the limitation of the activity. Many
players have simply limited their DCB activity and have
implemented more restrictive rules concerning their partners or
the use of technology. This limits the universality of DCB payments
and makes them progressively less competitive. The worst thing is
of course that the lengthening of payment flows, the introduction MM/YYYYY | ISSUE NO. XX
of One-Time Passwords, and other restrictions cannot stop fraud,
but it does drastically limit the activity. In most cases, growth is
limited and the company stagnates trying to cope with the fraud.
In the long run, the main risk is to be forced into shutting down, at
least temporarily, because of a major attack.
What are the players with the highest growth and profitability in
DCB doing to succeed?
They work on these basic fundamentals: conversion rates, enduser
satisfaction, latency, and the quality of the partners they
work with.
The ideal for the consumer is to pay in one click on an optimized
merchant site, and with complete peace of mind.
To achieve this ideal, the best players trust their partners to build
the most optimal payment paths, they take full advantage of all
DCB has to offer and attract partners that are particularly valued
by the end user. To do this, they invest in the right technology
solutions that allow them to trust their partners and control their
business. And this is what a great cybersecurity solution can offer,
capable of tracking the entire sales funnel, having total visibility of
the flows and stopping cybercriminal attacks.
The future of DCB is bright and we’ve reached unprecedented
levels of satisfaction with our customers. And this is just the
beginning for our industry. Juniper Research estimates that the
market will reach nearly $100 billion by 2026, with the most secure
players capturing a majority share of that pie. And by protecting
themselves, they will grow the DCB market well beyond that level.
Aligning the 3 Pillars of the Personal
Data and Identity Marketplace
Michael Becker, MEF PD&I Working Group Chair discusses the
intersection of privacy, security, and compliance to build and
maintain trust between society and industry.
MM/YYYYY | ISSUE NO. XX
For industry and society to function effectively, we need trust: “to
have and maintain confidence in the honesty of another (an
individual, system, service, or process) to meet their social,
commercial and civic obligations.”. In the context of today’s
digitally-driven society—with so many actors, systems, and
processes in play with varying agendas—trust is hard to achieve,
especially in light of the increasing sophistication, and losses as a
result of cybercrime which according to one analyst are estimated
to cost the world $10.5 Trillion annually by 2025.
To achieve trust, we must strive to align, and stay aligned, with the
three personal data and identity marketplace pillars.
The Three Personal Data and Identity Marketplace Pillars
To understand the personal data and identity marketplace, it is
helpful to first understand a handful of key concepts and their
interplay—namely privacy, security, and compliance.
• Privacy is a process related to an individual being in control of
both their physical self (person, stewards, or property—house,
cards, connected devices, etc.) and digital self (i.e., their personal
data). For an individual to have privacy they must be in a
position to manage all five elements of privacy (the “5 Ws”).
These are: who, what, when, where, and why. “Who” refers to
the entity (e.g., another individual, enterprise, government, or
machine) seeking to gain access to the individual. “What” refers
to what an entity is looking to access, i.e., aspects of the
individual’s physical or digital self. “When” refers to the timing of
the access, i.e., when and for how long will the entity have
physical or digital access to elements of the individual. “Where”
refers to the location where the interaction, physical connection,
or personal data exchange, will take place.
This could be in the real world, via mobile, in the cloud, locally on
an individual’s device, etc. “Why” refers to requesting an entity’s
intention and purpose for wanting access, e.g., what they are
going to do with the individual’s data (and, to maintain trust, will
they ensure there are no unauthorized secondary uses of the
data).
MOBILE ECOSYSTEM FORUM
43
• Security, in the context of personal data and identity, refers to
the state of a system or service being free from the threat of
unauthorized access and ensuring all access control policies—
also known as permissions and privileges—are fully operational.
To put it another way, a system or service is considered secure
when only authorized individuals can access it, i.e., login, and said
individuals can only access content and services in accordance
with the privileges bestowed upon them by the service
administrator. Note: Systems and services administrators
MM/YYYYY
will
| ISSUE NO. XX
have layers of identity management (i.e., authorization,
identification, and verification) to assure, with the appropriate
level of confidence (aka risk tolerance), that an individual (or at
least the credentials the individual is using to access a system) is
authorized and has not been compromised.
• Compliance refers to the act of ensuring that all activities
related to the legal (both commercial and civic) and regulatory
(both industry self-regulatory and government regulatory)
requirements are met by all actors involved in an exchange.
Two additional terms are relevant for this discussion: governance
and cybersecurity.
• Governance refers to the effort of providing oversight on the
alignment and execution of all processes and actions necessary
for adhering to compliance requirements and the delivery of
services.
• Cybersecurity refers to the efforts undertaken to protect a
system or service from cyber-attacks. In other words, this is the
effort to protect all aspects of a system (inc., data, storage,
network, devices) from unauthorized access and the
compromising of the system’s access and control policies so
that systems processes are not overridden, systems are not
physically damaged, and data is hacked or leaked.
Establishing and Maintaining Trust
When the three pillars of personal data and identity management
are working in harmony, and continue to do so over time, all parties
in a physical or digital exchange can build and maintain trust. This
trust is reinforced by the interplay of the overlapping elements of
the system: Faith (people have faith in systems to function
properly), Ombudsman (people feel protected as there are
institutions providing oversight of the systems on their behalf), MM/YYYYY and | ISSUE NO. XX
Accountability (public and private institutions are holding systems
and their administrators accountable to complying to the law and
regulations).
When any one of these pillars becomes unstable, trust is eroded,
the marketplace becomes less efficient, and any number of harms
can befall the various actors (individuals, private organizations, and
public institutions).
Where Do We Go From Here?
Establishing and maintaining trust is paramount for a healthy
society and economy. For the personal data and identity
marketplace to continue to flourish, more is needed than what is
depicted above.
First, individuals, the people, need to take more personal
accountability for the flow of their identity and personal data; they
should not just rely on the ombudsman and faith. They should
educate themselves on both the opportunities that can be
generated from actively managing their data and the risks when
they do not. They should learn to enact the digital rights afforded
to them by the current and impending regulations. And, they
should actively adopt passive and active technologies and services
to protect themselves.
TITLE HERE
The enterprise must participate in the education and support of
their constituents (aka prospects, users, customers, patients,
voters, etc.), to continue to fortify their systems—which will include
the adoption of emerging self-sovereign identity infrastructure, i.e.,
technology that will be individually in control of their data.
TITLE HERE
Finally, government and non-governmental bodies must become
more fluent in today’s technology and continue with their efforts to
help establish policies and guidelines that support and protect the
agency of the individual while supporting and stimulating innovation
and local, regional, federal, international, and global market
TITLE competition. HERE
Best Practice in IoT – How can suppliers
support the enterprise?
MEF Programme Director Nassia Skoulikariti speaks to MEF
Advisor Andrew Parkin-White about best practices when it
comes to IoT connectivity.
MM/YYYYY | ISSUE NO. XX
By way of context, MEF has three pieces of work which are either
complete or underway. Last year we did a survey into IoT drivers,
challenges priorities, technology choices and supplier references,
and we spoke to 450 enterprises globally that were already using
IoT.
This year, we have recently completed the field work for another
survey, but this time, we’re looking at enterprises that are planning
to use IoT in the next six to 24 months in Brazil, France, Germany,
India, Indonesia, South Africa, Spain, UK, and the USA.
TITLE HERE
In terms of the sectors, we examined what was happening in
automotive, automotive manufacturing systems, transportation,
storage and logistics, utilities and energy, healthcare,
manufacturing and industrial retail and wholesale agriculture and
smart cities and intelligent buildings was added this year.
TITLE HERE
MEF is also developing another piece of work, which we are calling
Best Practices in IoT connectivity and we have spoken to IoT CSPs
from across the globe, to find out how they’re responding to some
of the connectivity issues that we covered in our surveys.
What we found in our 2021 survey is for enterprises, 83% of them
said that using technology for business advantage was the most
important driver. We also saw which technologies enterprises are
using and planning to use and there is an apparent strong base of
usage of legacy 2G and 3G technologies at present. 4G is growing
in importance and organisations are highly interested in 5G but
only 3% are actually using 5G at present.
he most trusted partner for existing IoT users is the MNO, MM/YYYYY but | ISSUE NO. XX
what we found is that connectivity alone is not enough – support
and technical innovation are very important. Supplies should be
able to integrate all elements of a solution, handle the complete
project from start to finish and provide ongoing support.
Cost is a much lower consideration and boils down to enterprises
thinking about the business case investment case, the return on
investment, rather than the cost. We see these sorts of headline
figures in the marketplace of 10 years connectivity for $1 and the
race to the bottom as far as cost is concerned. Only part of the
market is really interested in that and the large part of the market
sees that IoT is critical to their business and competitivity. This
means that they are willing to invest and in these sorts of projects.
If we look at enterprises who are planning to launch IoT
applications, we see a different set of drivers emerging. The most
important consideration, by far is cost saving. In terms of spend on
connectivity, for every dollar spent, enterprises are planning to
spend around 10 to 15% of connectivity.
The second highest was digital transformation. When we asked
enterprises about their key challenges with IoT, 73% cite the
impact on their processes an issue along with the integration of
multiple technologies and impact on legacy systems. These three
issues represent a challenge and opportunity for suppliers, and
the strong impact this has on legacy systems. They were less
interested in security than existing users – maybe because their
applications are not live – and more interested in cloud integration
and data processing at the edge.
enterprises need a clear roadmap for their choices and
for future proofing.”
MEF also has a project underway looking at best practices in IoT
connectivity and we have spoken to eight leading IoT CSPs and
asked them about their views on some of the key connectivity
elements that we asked enterprises about in the survey. So first of
all, the most important criteria for enterprises is suppliers offering
a fully managed solution and this came out as 8.6/10.
The second highest score is for suppliers being able toMM/YYYYY onboard | ISSUE NO. XX
devices efficiently and integrate them into the into the IoT
applications that scored 8.4 for enterprises and 8.5 for CSPs.
Having a consistent quality of service sees the largest divergence
between what CSP think and enterprise needs and what the
enterprise believes at 9.4 compared to 5.6.
Enterprises see eSim as a critical tool and it is very much on their
critical path as a technology moving forward. The ability to have
solutions work across multiple technologies is also important and
enterprises need a clear roadmap for their choices and for future
proofing.
Of course, it is the detail that is important when we explore the
numbers by different geographies, sectors and enterprise sizes.
The key word that came up time and time again was flexibility and
so suppliers need to be flexible in dealing with evolving enterprise
needs. And this service wraparound is important so offering
security analytics cloud connectivity, billing and management
platforms performance reporting are important along with a costeffective
solution. Finally, educating the enterprise is important –
they don’t know yet what they don’t know and supplier expertise
can be applied here.
Exploring Private Mobile Networks
MEF Programme Director for IoT Nassia Skoulikariti shares a
detailed look into private mobile networks – what are they, what
are their benefits and how can enterprises leverage their use?
Private mobile networks are becoming increasingly popular as they
offer several advantages over traditional and publicMM/YYYYY network | ISSUE NO. XX
services.
The technology behind private mobile networks is evolving rapidly.
Various types are available today, including GSM, CDMA, and LTE;
each offers unique advantages and capabilities, making it the
perfect choice for specific applications.
Let’s look at what is a private mobile network.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) defines private
networks as those that do not operate under a carrier’s authority.
They include privately owned cell sites and home-based and local
area networks. Private networks are often referred to as
“unlicensed”.
TITLE HERE
According to the analysts, the growth in private mobile networks
comes mainly from 4G LET and 5G implementations.
5G is the next generation of cellular network technology that
promises faster speeds, lower latency, and better coverage. In
addition to offering high-speed internet access, it could provide
autonomous vehicles with remote guidance and control
capabilities. This makes 5G much safer and easier to implement
than current technologies like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
TITLE HERE
Private LTE networks have become increasingly popular in large
enterprise sites due to their dedicated spectrum and operating
functions. These networks typically use a dedicated spectrum and
dedicated operating functions or assets, making them more
efficient and reliable than public LTE networks.
The technology behind private mobile networks is evolving rapidly.
Various types are available today, including GSM, CDMA, and LTE;
each offers unique advantages and capabilities, making it the
perfect choice for specific applications.
Private LTE and 5G networks use licensed or unlicensedMM/YYYYY wireless | ISSUE NO. XX
spectrum. These networks are typically operated by companies
that want to offer customers a competitive advantage over others
in their market segment.
How do private LTE and private 5G networks work?
Private LTE and 5G networks are similar to traditional mobile
broadband networks. They consist of a set of radio towers that
communicate with each other via microwave frequencies. These
frequencies are licensed to Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and
are used to provide coverage across cities and regions.
The difference between public and private networks lies in who
has a license to operate the tower equipment and how it connects
to the core network.
In a public LTE or 5G network, the MNO owns and operates the
infrastructure, including the radio towers and base station
equipment.
In a private LTE or 5G network owned by a single organisation, the
owner owns and operates the infrastructure, including the radio
towers and base stations.
Both types of networks have a secure link between the edge
device and the infrastructure. The edge device uses this link to
send data to the infrastructure, and the infrastructure sends data
back to the edge device.
TITLE HERE
The benefits of building a Private Mobile Network (PMN)
Private Mobile networks are becoming increasingly popular for
private enterprises and government agencies who need the
flexibility, control, and security necessary for wireless edge
connectivity.
They’re instrumental in areas without sufficient capacity on
existing public networks and where it makes economic sense to
deploy a private solution.
“While there are clear benefits to deploying PMNs, significant
challenges are still associated with doing so, especially around
internal expertise and the cost of doing so. Most enterprises also
do not have the cell network knowledge or the number of MM/YYYYY mobile | ISSUE NO. XX
specialists necessary for successful implementation.“
Any organisation can set it up and run their own private LTE or fifth
generation (5G) network, just as anyone can set up and run their
Wi-Fi or mesh network. However, full private LTE and 5G networks
require a higher initial capital investment than Wi-Fi and other
networks. In addition, operators must consider many factors such
as the amount of traffic expected, how much bandwidth is
needed, the type of device being used, and the location of the
coverage area.
There are several advantages to building a private LTE/5G
network over traditional methods, including:
• Great level of control
• Security
• Deployments
• Device access & management
• Capacity & Scalability
• Coverage & Availability
• Independence & Flexibility
A PMN provides a scalable, reliable, and secure infrastructure for
enterprise applications and IoT devices. As a result, Private mobile
networks offer a viable alternative to public LTE/5G networks for
mission-critical applications like industrial automation, smart
buildings, and healthcare.
TITLE HERE
It’s not all rosy, some of the challenges of deploying PMNs?
TITLE HERE
There are many potential benefits to implementing PMNs within an
enterprise as outlined above, and many large enterprises across
different sectors are already using private Mobile Networks
(PMNs).
While there are clear benefits to deploying PMNs, significant
challenges are still associated with doing so, especially around
internal expertise and the cost of doing so.
Most enterprises also do not have the cell network knowledge or
the number of mobile specialists necessary for successful
implementation.
Some other challenges include:
• Security concerns: High levels of security are required due to
the sensitive information that is transferred over the networks,
MM/YYYYY | ISSUE NO. XX
which includes personal information, financial information,
intellectual property, confidential customer data and much
more.
• Privacy concerns: PMNs pose privacy risks because they collect
and transmit data to cloud servers, potentially exposing
sensitive information.
• Lack of standards: There is no standard definition of PMNs,
making it difficult for vendors to develop products that meet
enterprise requirements.
• Cost: PMNs add cost to deployments, requiring additional
hardware, software licenses and ongoing maintenance.
• Complexity: PMNs introduce complexity into IT environments,
making them harder to manage and operate.
Many enterprises have multiple connectivity solutions, each with a
specific application or use case, leading to fragmentation,
complexity, and an increase in the overall cost of ownership.
Many choose to deploy hybrid networking that combines private
and public network connectivity solutions, allowing enterprises and
organisations to take advantage of the best available features
from both types.
TITLE HERE
Enterprises should focus on understanding where and when each
connectivity solution is best suited, find potential network
synergies, and take advantage of any opportunity for
consolidation.
TITLE HERE
Conclusion
The demand for private mobile networks (PMNs) based on LTE
and increasing numbers of 5G technologies are proliferating due
to the ever-increasing amount of data traffic generated by
businesses and governments, combined with the growth in digital
transactions and IoT devices.
Organisations of all types are now combining wireless connectivity
with big data and analytics capabilities to improve operational
efficiencies, automate processes, enhance customer experiences
and provide new services to their customers.
Many challenges need to be solved before PMN deployments
become commonplace. These include the lack of interoperability
between network infrastructure providers, the high MM/YYYYY cost of | ISSUE NO. XX
deploying and operating PMNs; the difficulty of managing large
volumes of data traffic; the requirement for extensive physical site
preparation; and the need for ongoing upgrades and maintenance.
MM/YYYYY | ISSUE NO. XX
I had the pleasure of attending the MEF RCS World in association
with Google at the Google HQ, called The Foundry, in Dublin 12 / 13
July.
It was the first ever RCS World where Rich Communication
Services ecosystem for business communications was discussed
and demonstrated.
As the whole Live Events space is returning after the Lockdowns it
was very well attended with people from across the world who
had a wide range of interests in RCS, or more precisely, Rich
Business Messaging (RBM). It was a two-day event in the
wonderful Foundry which was ideally located for this. I will just
mention some of my personal highlights from across a galaxy of
very good speakers and Use Cases showing the power of RBM
The most surprising number, for me, mentioned here was the
The celebrity Keynote Speaker was Alastair Campbell –
Communication, Writer, Strategist – in person. His theme was “Talk
to Me – What can 1990’s political communications can teach
businesses today”. As an expert on Communications, he pointed
out that the industry really didn’t have a strategy to help grow the
RBM as a channel and that it really was a collection of individual
efforts.
The sessions were co-Hosted by brand expert, Lynn Lester,
Managing Director – The Drum, who also led on her own session
“Jumping into conversation – is conversational commerce the
answer to the challenges in today’s customer’s experiential
journey?” Lynn, apart from her glorious Scottish accent, illustrated
how clever brands are engaging customers with a stimulating
series of classic adverts.
Next up was the always intriguing Nick Lane, Founder & Chief
Insight Analyst – Mobilesquared, Nick talking about “The ROI of RCS
Conversations – Is it really a success, metrics, benchmarks and
comparisons”. I happened to know Nick was on the way to the
British Open later that day, so it was great to see him take the
detour to Dublin and share his research.
TITLE HERE
I don’t want to spoil Nick’s presentation by giving exact numbers
here but he had some powerful illustrations of the power of
engagement from RBM – where the “sell through” rate is
considerably higher compared to the usual SMS experience. Also,
he compared RBM to other non-Mobile Channels (TV, Radio) and
you could see that RBM is already a contender on the basis of
cost and customer engagement.
If you contact Nick I’m sure he’ll be glad to share the details with
you. (or you can see his presentation in full over here! – Ed)
Finally, we started to work through the Use Cases of which there
were many, so I’ll mention just one that was very powerful.
This was “Conversational Commerce – “Sold out” Samsung &
Orange Spain” presented by Maria Soledad Martinez, B2B Sales
Manager – Samsung and Mayte Martin, Head of RCS – Orange
Spain.
MM/YYYYY | ISSUE NO. XX
As a test in Spain, Samsung, in association with Orange, compared
three channels to sell the Samsung Galaxy S22 – the Channels
were SMS, Email and RCS. And the convincing winner was RBM by
a strong margin. I won’t share all the details but the Interaction
Rate for RCS was at least double the next channel. More intriguing,
other Samsung products, which were co-marketed as part of the
interaction and the total portfolio sales were six times the next
channel!
This was due to the conversational form of marketing enabled by
RBM.
There was a lot more to come – but for the purposes of this short
Blog, these speakers mentioned above captured the power of
RBM.
The highlights to me in Summary are:
• RCS Active Users is heading for the Billion next year
• RBM is becoming a viable and effective channel, particularly in
comparison with other traditional channels
• A well run RBM Campaign will outstrip Email and SMS,
particularly in Portfolio Sales or Cross Selling
That’s it, it was a great event and hopefully we’ll see more of these
types of events as we return to normality. Thanks to the MEF
team, who, as usual turned out a very professional event and
welcomed everyone and made them feel at home.
