As I write we are mourning the
death of our monarch Queen
Elizabeth. At our recently held
Civic Service we focussed on
the wonderful community spirit
of Wellington, and I believe the two go
together; the Queen’s life was dedicated
to public service and community, she
supported organisations large and small
throughout the country and the value and
respect she had for those groups and the
people running them contributed to the
community spirit of towns like ours. She
valued voluntary organisations and in return
so do we and we are all proud to belong to
them.
In Wellington we have many voluntary
groups, some longstanding, others much
younger, and some still being created such
as all the activity at the Bowring Park.
Covid has taught us that we need to get
out and meet people, and we have a greater
recognition of this than ever before.
Last year we came first with Church
Stretton in winning the ‘Outstanding
Community Award’ from the Community
Foundation of Shropshire. Voluntary groups
bring people together, creating friendships,
increasing knowledge and raising money
for charities. They help people develop
organisational skills, provide companionship
for each other as well as the community,
and are the starting point of our democracy
in that all voluntary groups are run on
constitutional lines.
We have a huge variety of clubs in
Wellington, encompassing all age groups
and activities - singing, dramatics, boxing,
general sport, walking, running, charity
shops, photography, flowers and gardening,
U3A, Towns Women’s Guild, and many more.
The point is that no-one needs to
sit at home wondering what to do with
themselves. There are lots of things to get
involved with, and be part of that sense of
community. A big thank you to all those who
keep everything going.
We in Wellington have a truly rich society
of which we should be very proud.
We have lost our Queen but we know
that King Charles is known for his charitable
activities and in giving him our support
I’m sure we can rely on him continuing his
mother’s work.
I do hope to welcome many of you as
we join together, again in the spirit of
community, for our annual Remembrance
Parade on Sunday 13 November at the
Lychgate, and again at our famous Christmas
Lights Switch on event on Saturday 19
November and at the Mayor’s Carol Service
on Sunday 11 December.
Kind regards
Cllr Dorothy Roberts
Orbit included in ambitious
Levelling Up funding bid
Telford Makerspace
opens in Park Street
The Wellington Orbit,
the independently run
community cinema in
the centre of Wellington,
has been included in an
ambitious funding bid which could see
it receive over £1.4m in vital funding
to obtain the freehold and complete
redevelopment of the upper floors of
the former HSBC bank. The not-forprofit
organisation which opened in
May 2019, has been included in the
Levelling Up Fund bid for Wellington,
submitted by Telford & Wrekin Council
to the government for consideration.
The Orbit opened with phase 1
consisting of a 63-seat cinema and
cafe following years of fundraising
and support from the community
and local investors, including Telford
& Wrekin Council. Phase 2 will more
than double the size of their current
Nanny’s Craft Bakery in Crown Street, Wellington,
made the ‘county’s biggest chocolate éclair’ to
mark three years since opening as well as setting a
fundraising challenge for customers. Kris Dimitrov,
who owns the family business which specialises
in Bulgarian bakery treats, was one of the first
recipients of the Pride in Our High Street empty shop
grants from Telford & Wrekin Council, diversifying
during the pandemic to make a larger range of
products, and his shop now has a huge following.
facilities, seeing the remaining floors
of the building come to fruition with a
performing arts studio and exhibition
space.
Ray Hughes, of the Orbit said, “We
are truly thankful for the support we
have received from Telford and Wrekin
and Wellington Town Councils and also
the local community helping us bring
vital arts and culture facilities to the
community of Wellington and beyond.”
As part of the bid, the Orbit needs
to find some match funding to the
tune of 10% and has launched a
community share offer, which has
already enjoyed significant and
generous support from the Wellington
community; “Even an investment
of just £10 is a personal declaration
that you support our aim of making
Wellington a better place for the
whole community” said Ray.
A play park on Victoria Avenue is set for
improvements thanks to local residents, the
YMCA, College Ward Cllr Lee Carter and Telford
& Wrekin’s Pride in Our Parks Fund. The park,
on a main thoroughfare into Wellington, has
been underused by local youngsters but the
new investment will see facilities for cricket and
basketball as well as new equipment.
Cllr Carter said, “Residents have been pushing
for this investment for a long time and it has
been a priority to secure the funding to deliver
improvements.”
Cllr Carter has also confirmed that he used his
Telford & Wrekin Ward Funding to hold a ‘Love
Where you Live’ event at the YMCA in August.
Wolves Women in Wellington
l Picture by Jack Thomas WWFC.
06
The country was buzzing this summer with the success of England’s
Lionesses winning the Euros and increasing interest in women’s
football. Wellington residents now find women’s football on their
doorstep this season as Wolves Women will be playing their home
games at AFC Telford United’s New Bucks Head Stadium.
The move comes after a successful season with the side
crowned champions of the Northern Premier Division. Wolves
Women Chair Jenny Wilkes said, “We’re delighted to move to such
an impressive stadium. The pitch and facilities are excellent, and
we look forward to welcoming plenty of locals.
“If you haven’t seen women’s football live before, you can
expect a family atmosphere, some great skills on show, and the
players are always happy to chat and sign autographs after the
game.” Welcome to Wellington ladies!
Amazing technicolour
community production
Following the success of the community production of Godspell at All
Saints Church, as part of the Wellington Festival, there are plans for a
second such venture in May 2023. At the time of going to press, it is hoped
that Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat will be performed
by members of the Wellington community who come together, to stage a
fun and spirited production.
Anyone interested in being involved, in any capacity, please contact Sue
Pointon via email: suepointon@gmail.com. Rehearsals will start in January
2023 and there will be an introductory meeting beforehand.
WELLINGTON BLOOMS AGAIN
Italian
Scooter Day
in Wellington
September saw Wellington host a unique
‘Italian scooter day’ with the town packed
with over 120 scooters of all types and
vintage and riders coming from as far as
Cheshire and Staffordshire. David Morris,
director of the ‘Italian Auto Moto Club’
said, ‘’As far as we know, this event is the
first time in the UK that a town has hosted
an event purely for scooters on its central
streets. It’s great to get enthusiasts to
come to meet up in a town setting and
help to regenerate the local economy.”
The food court in the market was also
open for the morning and it is hoped to
repeat this event next spring.
Wellington proved that
it was blooming over
the summer, with
the annual gardening
competition. Green
fingered residents entered the annual
Wellington in Bloom competition and
Wellington Town Council donated
garden voucher prizes and rosettes.
Organiser Sally Themans of Love
Wellington accompanied Cllr Dorothy
Roberts, Mayor of Wellington, to judge
the entries said there was an excellent
response, “Well-kept gardens show a
real pride in people’s locality and we
wanted to celebrate and reward that.”
Those recognised included: David
Mason of Roseway, Wendy Davies of
Pooler Close, Charlotte Heywood
of Albert Road, Michelle Spidder of
Parklands, Paula Wooley of Hampton
Hill, Ian Mottershaw of Barnfield
Wrekin
Soroptimists
celebrate
45 years
CLIMATE ACTION
HUB TELFORD
12
Women’s group, Soroptimist International The Wrekin,
celebrates 45 years since its foundation in Shropshire.
The group, which is based in Wellington, seeks to make a
difference to the life chances of women and girls across the
world and at home. It is the largest international women’s
voluntary organisation in the world. The word ‘soroptimist’
is a combination of the Latin words soror meaning sister and
optima meaning best - interpreted as the best for women. It
is a global volunteer movement with nearly 72,000 Members
in 121 countries.
The Wrekin Soroptimists have undertaken a number
of local projects including toilet twinning - providing a
sustainable toilet in remote communities and schools
achieving Toilet Twinning Status for Ironbridge World
Heritage Site and then Telford; partnered with ‘Helping
Handbags’ to provide toiletries and sanitary wear to
women and girls who had found themselves in crisis across
Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin. They also delivered 370
Christmas gift bags to local women last year and hope to
do the same this year with their campaign launching in
November. There is a keen environmental element of their
work, with The Wrekin group highlighting the effect of fast
fashion on climate change, pollution and landfill as well as
Tree Planting Action Against Climate Change, funding the
planting of 565 trees in Nepal, and 30 fruit trees to develop
a local Community Orchard at Homer Lake. The group have
also run various events in Wellington town centre with a stall
promoting buying local and reducing food miles and a plant
and seed stall and are keen supporters of Wellington Town
Council’s Climate Emergency Steering Group.
Anyone interested in joining or donating to the Christmas
bags please email siwrekin@outlook.com or text 07969
574446.
Climate Action Hub Telford has the aim of supporting
our local community to respond to, and tackle, the
growing climate emergency.
The group is seeking
to develop an
environmentally
focused community
space, where people
can meet, share resources
and learn and are currently
looking to secure a base in
Wellington housing a collection
of tools and equipment that
can be borrowed (a ‘Library
of Things’); there will be space
for recycling, repairing and
reviving activities as well as
space for talks, workshops and
meetings. The Repair Café will
be working in partnership with
them, repairing and renovating
items to save people from
throwing away and buying new.
Wellington Town Council are
working in partnership with the
group in the search for suitable
premises.
One recent success was
the Bowring Nature Festival
event (one of the Bowring Park
Family Fun Days) with over 120
visitors. Children made bird
feeders from plastic bottles,
planted seeds in old egg boxes
and toilet roll tubes, printed
animal and insect designs
onto T-shirts and fabric, made
‘fortune tellers’ with a green
twist and chilled out in our
reading corner. There was also
a box of school uniform items
to take or swap, promoting
re-use of clothing rather than
buying new.
In November Climate Action
Hub Telford and XR Telford will
be sponsoring a film showing
with an environmental message
at The Orbit to coincide with
the COP27 meeting of world
leaders in Egypt.
Three Wellington retailers, as well
as an electric bike delivery service,
have joined forces on a Christmas
cake kit scheme.
Keli King who runs The Little
Green Pantry in Crown Street said,
“We introduced this Christmas
cake kit idea last year and it proved
a successful collaboration with
Lesley’s Larder, Top Fruits and The
Daberhashery and this year we will
be offering them again, as well as
gingerbread and Christmas pudding
Wellington’s solar savings!
After benefitting from a Telford and Wrekin Climate
Change and Sustainability Grant, the bus station
toilet block solar panels are now producing
as much electricity as an average domestic
property. The monthly bills have been reduced
by over 75%!
The three Speed Indicator Devices in
Wellington are also now fitted with solar panels
and it is hoped this will bring an additional saving.
In July, Allums Jewellers on New Street also had
solar panels installed on their roof and we’re looking
forward to hearing about their savings.
delivered by E-Cargo bike thanks to
Shropshire Cycle Hub.”
This new green delivery service
is part of a wider trial being run
by volunteers from the cycle hub
throughout October, with deliveries
being made in the Wellington
area on behalf of businesses on
Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
“This is a great new service…
ideal for customers who may not
be able to get into town and it also
reduces the number of journeys by
car, cutting carbon emissions,” Keli
added.
l Cllr Anthony Lowe presents Jordan Stanley of Magna Crate with
his ‘Surfers Against Sewage Plastic Free Business Champion’
Wellington Town Council’s Climate Emergency
Steering Group are working to help the community
become more eco-friendly - particularly encouraging
a reduction in the use of plastic. The monthly zoom
meetings are extremely productive, with more
businesses and local community groups becoming
part of the journey. For more information please
Read Easy UK is a registered
charity that supports volunteers
to set up local groups to help their
communities. There are currently
CHRISTMAS IN WELLINGTON
“It was so pleasant to celebrate Queen
Elizabeth II’s platinum jubilee in Wellington, that
we cannot stand by without sharing with you
our sorrow for her departure. All of us have
always kept a very high consideration for your
noble Queen …we’ll miss her!”
Marc Feugere
deputy mayor of Châtenay-Malabry
“It was so sad to hear the passing of Her
Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
I think we all felt she would be there for ever,
and it seemed almost unreal to hear the news
yesterday.
To all of us, she embodied the incarnation of
the British nation and the model of royal unity
and stability. Her devotion to her country was
truly inspirational to many people around the
world.
In the name of the Twinning Committee
of Châtenay-Malabry, I send our deepest
condolences to all the inhabitants of Wellington
