Putting a beat down on Auburn certainly made this 

past weekend even more epic … now it’s Vandy 

and homecoming in Athens … Woof, Woof, Woof!

There’s nothing like a home game in 

Athens where the buzz gets rolling 

midweek and the cherry on top is 

a big win by our men in Red and Black. 

Check and check because that’s exactly 

what happened as our fans converged on 

the Classic City in droves and Kirby and company thumped the 

Tigers back to the Plains. 

During Auburn week, I always remind anyone I run into that 

the Tigers are so due to get a victory in the Deep South’s Oldest 

Rivalry. However, thankfully this Georgia football program has a 

killer mentality where dominance is the name of game every year. 

This time out, our offensive line clearly had something to prove 

after a not-so-great performance at Mizzou. Yummy … 292 

rushing yards on 39 carries and 6 TDs. That is flat out running your 

opponent into the ground. And the best part of the performance 

was a much-needed shot in the arm for the running back unit, 

who despite playing well this season, hadn’t really broken out. 

Check that box too! 

As much as I love destroying Aubie, it was just one victory in 

a season that still has five more SEC foes and Tech ahead . The 

focus now is on a Vanderbilt team that is definitely getting some 

footing. And like every opponent of our Dawgs, I fully expect the 

‘Dores to arrive in Athens with a mindset to take down the No. 1 

team in the country (AP Poll).

Inside this issue, our BI sports guys will get you ready for the 

game. Definitely don’t miss Jeff Dantzler’s excellent column on 

page 10. Ole’ JD gets rather nostalgic discussing all the wonderful 

traditions that surround our proud University and its football 

team. It’s the perfect fit since this weekend is homecoming in 

Athens. While it certainly won’t be quite as rowdy as Auburn, 

homecoming is always special with so many youngsters coming 

to see their beloved Bulldogs. 

On the social side, the BI camera (with a lot of appreciated 

assistance from contributors) nabbed 80 fan photos (pages 28-44) 

from the Auburn weekend. The town really was electric even 

though Georgia’s opponent definitely was not. Sorry, I can’t help 

myself. There’s nothing better than keeping War Eagle silent. 

All three of our main social features (Georgia Girls, Proust and 

Bulldogs of the 4th Estate) are in this issue. It’s always so much 

fun profiling Georgia alumni and we certainly appreciate their 

participation. 

Hamilton Culpepper is also in this issue with a great read 

about new Lady Bulldogs basketball coach Katie Abrahamson- 

Henderson (page 48). It’s hard to believe but both of Georgia 

hoops’ programs are just weeks away from action on the 

hardwood. We are working on something neat in a future issue 

for Mike White’s men’s program. Coach White was nice enough 

to let the media attend an entire practice recently and I must say 

it was impressive. He and his staff are pulling the onion all the 

way back with fundamentals being at the core. And from what 

I witnessed, the players are really 

enjoying themselves despite being 

pushed to the max. I can’t wait … 

our Hoop Dawgs are going to play 

some aggressive defense this year. 

Finally, I leave you with this photo 

of Jack Bauerle, who was recognized 

during the Auburn game for his 

wonderful career at the helm of UGA’s 

Swimming and Diving program. I 

actually saw Jack after the recognition 

and it was neat to see how emotional 

he was in discussing the moment. 

Without a doubt, he is one of the 

greatest Bulldogs of them all. 

It’s homecoming in Athens …

Homecoming is the perfect time to reflect that 

the Georgia Bulldogs, Sanford Stadium and all the 

traditions are a timeless and enduring delight to the senses

Be great, stay relevant. Reliving 

the glory days of the early 

1980s is a lot more fun now 

that Georgia is in the midst of 

the Kirby Smart Glory Days of the late 

2010s and early 2020s. 

Going to watch the Bulldogs play is the 

common ground. Georgia is the unifier. 

The magnificent retired Reverend Chuck 

Hodges talked one morning at Athens 

First United Methodist of one of the 

things that makes college football, and 

in our case, Georgia football so special 

and beloved. We’re all for something. 

Petty differences are left at the gates. 

In a world so frighteningly ripe with 

division and anger on so many topics 

and subjects, with the flames so easily 

fanned by the addictions of social media 

(by the way, you can follow me on Twitter 

@JeffDantzlerTV) the Georgia Bulldogs 

bring people together. Oh there’s still 

hate. I know that’s a strong word, so let’s 

just say severe dislike for most of the 

opposition. Especially if that foe in the 

eyes of the Bulldogs wears old gold or 

orange. But everyone in red and black 

has the common unity of pulling with 

everything you’ve got, to somehow 

hopefully witness a Georgia victory. 

Through decades and decades, we keep 

coming back. It brings old friends - some 

we only see on autumn Saturdays - back 

together and there are new friends to 

be made. All with that common bond of 

loving the Georgia Bulldogs. 

Tradition is a cornerstone of college 

football. That’s why so many of these 

sweeping changes from conference 

expansion, a tripling in playoff size, the 

transfer portal, NIL, have been headspinning 

for a sport that had been 

relatively stable for a long time. 

We love the tradition of the Georgia 

Bulldogs. The players, the coaches, the 

victories, the characters, the legends. We 

love Sanford Stadium, placed perfectly 

in the natural valley between north and 

south campus. We love the hedges. We 

love Uga, the greatest mascot of all time. 

We love the memories. 

A lot of psychologists - I dated a few 

psychology majors and married a 

beautiful one who teaches third grade - 

will tell you that sounds and smells can 

trigger memories quicker than sights. 

I buy that. 

Coming to games in the 1980s are 

some of my fondest memories. Whether 

with my mom and dad, Bill and Jean 

Cheshire, Bob and Jay Deal, who I’d 

meet in Hopeulikeit at a convenience 

store heading out of town, Marion and 

Gary Hulsey and their friend Edward 

Motes, who once at a tailgate ate a 

dozen chili dogs from The Varsity and at 

least twice as many wings. The trips, the 

journey, the pageantry, and living and 

dying with the Dawgs, those reflections 

of a lifetime loving Georgia are special 

and cherished. 

There used to be a double decker 

bus parked on the bridge next to the 

northwest corner of the end zone. The 

guy on top was fully lubricated and had 

a megaphone, cheering on the Dawgs, 

heckling opposing fans, and saying hello 

to some of the beautiful Bulldog Belles. 

Inside the stadium, with senses in 

overload, there’s one I’ll never forget. 

A smell, so beautiful and majestic, it 

delighted the senses so, that to this 

day, if even a scant hint of this aromatic 

delight is in the air, my mind immediately 

bounces back to a warm Saturday and 

13-6 victory over South Carolina in 1987. 

Peanut hulls, cigarette smoke and 

bourbon. 

If there was a cologne, it would rival 

Cosmo Kramer’s “The Beach.” 

Those memories are a lot better since 

Georgia is amongst the upper crust 

aristocracy of college football, these 

reigning national champion Bulldogs 

aiming for a sixth straight top ten finish 

and major bowl game - and then some. 

It’s a tough trick to honor tradition and 

continue to evolve. Georgia has done a 

magnificent job with such. 

For the sake of argument, this 50-year 

old will call anything that began in the 

21st century a ‘new tradition.’ 

On ‘Bulldogs Live’ one Monday night 

a couple of years ago, playing the radio 

game I invented that will someday make 

me insanely wealthy called “Above, Below 

& In Between,” our distinguished panel of 

Alan Thomas, Road Dawg Adam Gillespie, 

Ben Brandenburg and yours truly ranked 

Georgia’s ‘new traditions’ per our order of 

preference. 

It was like picking my favorite Sports 

Illustrated Swimsuit Model of the 80s, Elle, 

Kathy or Christie. Kathy Ireland was my 

favorite, but they were all great. 

All of these are great, too. 

The Dawg Walk gets everyone - players, 

fans, coaches - in the mood early. 

The Lone Trumpeter at the bottom of 

the upper deck in the southwest corner 

of the end zone playing the Battle Hymn 

of the Bulldog Nation is a sure first goose 

bump inducer. Then comes the greatest 

voice ever on the glory filled jaunt down 

memory lane, two words … Go Dawgs - 

with the Legendary Voice of the Georgia 

Bulldogs, the incomparable mighty Larry 

Munson. Legend. 

The best P.A. man in the land, Brooke 

Whitemire bellowing, “if your blood runs 

red and black, get on your feet and let’s 

make some Sanford Stadium noise, for 

your reigning national champion Georgia 

Bulldogs!” 

When Kirby invites the Georgia faithful 

to rise and join him as we “attack the day.” 

Straight into The Who’s Baba O’Reily and 

that accompanying video. 

And when it’s fourth quarter time, as 

the Redcoat Band begins “Krypton,” when 

the sun has set on an Athens Saturday, 

the stadium lights go off, and it’s time to 

“Light up Sanford.” 

Pageantry personified. 

Sounds, sights, feel, throw in some 

fried chicken and your drink of choice, 

there’s the taste, and the memories of 

that uniquely once semi-legal wonderful 

smell, and there you have it. The Georgia 

Bulldogs and Sanford Stadium are a 

timeless and enduring delight to the 

senses.

Georgia and Vanderbilt square off Saturday afternoon at 

Sanford Stadium in a Southeastern Conference battle. 

The Bulldogs beat Auburn 42-10 this past weekend, 

improving to 6-0 and 3-0 in SEC play. Georgia scored six 

touchdowns on the ground, including three from Daijun 

Edwards, who became the first Bulldog to post three rushing 

scores in a game since the sensational Sony Michel in the 

epic 54-48 Rose Bowl victory over Oklahoma on New Year’s 

Day 2018. 

In the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry, Georgia has now won six 

straight, dating back to the 2017 SEC Championship Game 

triumph that vaulted the Bulldogs to the Rose Bowl and the 

College Football Playoff. Georgia has won 15 of the last 18 

meetings with Auburn, and eight in a row against the Tigers 

at Sanford Stadium. 

Overall, dating back to a 31-24 win over Mississippi State, 

reigning national champion Georgia has won 24 of its last 25 

games. 

Vanderbilt is one of the most improved teams in college 

football. The Commodores went just 2-10 a year ago, and had 

already topped that win total by the end of September. A 

52-28 loss to Ole Miss in Nashville this past weekend moved 

the Commodores to 3-3 overall and 0-2 in the SEC. But 

Vandy has made a big jump in Clark Lea’s second season as 

Vanderbilt’s head coach. A 63-10 Week Zero win at Hawaii was 

an eye-opener. Last season’s record included, a 62-0 thrashing 

by Georgia in Nashville en route to the Bulldogs national 

championship. This will be the first time Vanderbilt has played 

at Sanford Stadium since 2018. Twice in the Covid season of 

2020, the Commodores backed out of coming to Athens. 

In Kirby Smart’s first season at the helm of his alma mater 

in 2016, the Bulldogs were upset by the Commodores 17-16 

Between the Hedges. Since, Georgia has won five straight 

against Vanderbilt, all by impressive margins. 

Georgia is eyeing the victory and a strong posting into a 

much needed open date. The Bulldogs have been riddled by 

injuries across the board. Five combined turnovers in wins 

over Kent State and a scary squeaker at Missouri made for 

victories in which Smart emphasized his team didn’t play to 

its high standard. 

After a scoreless first quarter against Auburn, the Bulldogs 

were in excellent form and most definitely performed like a 

bona fide championship contender. The Commodores and 

that standard are the focus Saturday. Vandy meanwhile, is 

searching for a program elevating upset.

BULLDOGS TO WATCH

BRYAN MCCLENDON (RECEIVER COACH) - It’s been a while 

since Georgia fans have seen their team go up top on a defense and 

heave one for a deep touchdown. The Dawgs just haven’t executed or 

had the leeway to try that high-risk, high-reward kind of play, but that 

should change against Vanderbilt. Coach Bryan McClendon and this 

Georgia receiving core should have their way with this objectively less 

talented Commodore secondary. Expect Stetson Bennett to be airing it 

out come gameday.

ARIAN SMITH (WR #11) - After being limited by both recovery 

from surgery and a minor thumb injury, Smith should find some good 

opportunities against a below mediocre Vanderbilt defense. If offensive 

coordinator Todd Monken is to try any plays that take the top off the 

defense, it would be against Vanderbilt with Arian Smith, so if he finds 

himself open deep don’t be surprised. 

OSCAR DELP (TE #4) - Freshman tight end Oscar Delp often finds 

playing time in the back end of games when the win is already secured. 

Given the reputation of this Vanderbilt team going into week seven, 

the Dawgs should secure their victory early in this game which in turn 

should offer Delp more opportunities in the form of targets. He’s shown 

off some decent route running ability and has found himself open in 

the past. Expect him to be challenged earlier in this matchup. 

DEVIN WILLOCK (OL #77) - The fact that Georgia constantly 

rotates their offensive line is an underrated and overlooked statement 

that speaks to the talent and depth that they have at that position. 

Willock is a force in the running game. Standing at 6-7, 335-pound, he 

uses his size to displace defenders and make way for the ball carrier. 

TRAMEL WALTHOUR (#90) - Originally a JUCO transfer, Tramel 

Walthour has been seeing an increased role ever since fellow DL and 

first round lock Jalen Carter went down with a knee injury. Most often 

you can see Walthour play at defensive end, but he has the size to 

play inside, and he’s been utilized there before. Walthour is a twitchy 

defender who can show fans that he has something special to offer 

with this newfound playing time. 

KELEE RINGO (#5) - Starting the year off, considered as a preseason 

All-American and first round NFL draft pick by multiple prominent 

outlets may have gotten into the young cornerbacks head. Over the 

past six games Keee Ringo’s game has been a little shaky. Yes, he’s had 

good days, but he’s also had bad ones. When you have a defensive 

front that’s as hard to run against as the one that Georgia has right 

now, your corners are bound to see more targets. Ringo should have a 

performance that lives up to the hype against a dingy Vanderbilt team.

Freshman sensation Herschel Walker carried 23 

times for 283 yards and scored on touchdown runs 

of 60, 54 and 48 in a 41-0 victory over Vandy en 

route to the 1980 National Championship. 

Garrison Hearst had a tremendous performance 

against the Commodores in 1992, running for 246 

yards on 21 carries, with scoring jaunts of 71 and 55 

yards in a 30-20 Georgia victory. 

Todd Gurley carried 16 times for 130 yards and 

ran for two touchdowns as a freshman against 

Vanderbilt in 2012, leading the Bulldogs to a 48-3 

victory en route to an 11-1 regular season.

COMMODORES TO WATCH

CLARK LEA (HC) - Lea is in his second season at Vanderbilt 

having replaced Derek Mason. Vanderbilt, which historically has 

been considered a bottom-tier SEC football school, is no easy task. 

Lea has publicly stated how much he believes in the potential of the 

Commodore program. Lea has already shown great improvement 

from year one to year two, and he’ll be doing everything in his power 

to find a signature win.

LINEBACKER 

WILL SHEPPARD (WR #14) - Sheppard leads the Commodores 

in receiving yards and touchdowns with a remarkable eight 

touchdown catches. The next closest Vandy receiver has just two 

touchdown receptions. Sheppard has amassed 35 receptions during 

the 2022 campaign and does a fantastic job using his big frame to 

make difficult catches look easy. Sheppard is proving to be not only 

Vanderbilt’s best receiver, but one of the better receivers in the SEC. 

RAY DAVIS (RB #2) - Davis is the Commodores leading rusher 

on the season. He has eclipsed over 500 yards on the ground while 

also adding four rushing touchdowns. Davis is an excellent receiving 

back as well and has put up 17 receptions for 100 yards and two 

touchdowns through just five games. While Davis is only 5-9, he is 

certainly is not one to shy away from contact. The senior from San 

Francisco, California as a freshman carried the ball a remarkable 193 

times. As a senior, he is already over 100 carries on the season. The 

Dawgs will certainly need to be aware of Vandy’s do-it-all back. 

ANFERNEE ORGI (LB #0) - The 6-2 linebacker is the centerpiece 

of Vanderbilt’s defense. After only five games, Orgi has already racked 

up 61 tackles on the season. In fact, this past Saturday was his first 

game this season with under 10 tackles. Orgi game into the season as 

a preseason All-SEC third-team player but is showing that he deserves 

first-team honors. Expect to see his name continue to appear on the 

Butkus Award watch list as well. 

MAXWELL WORSHIP (S #21) - Worship is the next leading 

tackler on this Commodore defensive unit with 33. The safety from 

Coral Springs, Florida is a very solid tackler. He likes to come down 

to the line of scrimmage and make plays on the ball. Worship has 

already forced a fumble on the season. He also has shown his ability 

to cover receivers and tight-ends effectively, as he has totaled 3 pass 

deflections this season. 

TYSON RUSSELL (CB #8) - Just a sophomore from Plantation, 

Florida, Tyson Russell is emerging as one of Vandy’s best cornerbacks. 

Another player who is an efficient tackler with 21 total tackles 

heading into the Georgia game. The sophomore will have a tough 

task defending Georgia’s soon-to-be healthy receivers, but he is 

certainly talented enough to give the Dawgs some trouble. 



One of the most decorated players in Vanderbilt 

basketball history, Jeff Turner was a member of the 

1984 USA Olympic Gold Medal winning team, which 

included Georgia’s Vern Fleming. 

An All-Southeastern Conference performer at 

Vanderbilt, Will Wolford enjoyed a 13-year NFL career, 

and started at left tackle for the Buffalo Bills first 

three AFC champion Super Bowl teams. 

Under the watch of their legendary longtime head 

coach Dan McGugin (1904-1934), the Commodores 

boasted a three year cumulative record of 24-2 from 

1904 through 1906.

FIVE KEYS 

FOR A DAWGS VICTORY 

CONTAIN AND PRESSURE THE QB - A big reason the Commodores have made a 

big jump in the win column is vastly improved play at the quarterback position. Let’s start 

1with the speedy Mike Wright, who burst onto the scene with a sterling performance in the 

Commodores’ Week Zero blowout win at Hawaii. He is fast, he can run and throw. AJ Swann, 

a native of White, Georgia, has split time with White and been effective through the air with 

a nice TD to interception ratio. Georgia must make these signal callers uncomfortable. When 

Wright is in the game, keeping containment, and not over-pursuing is an absolute must. 

DICTATE OFFENSIVELY - Whether it’s the run to set up the pass, the pass to set 

up the run or a blend working perfectly, Georgia needs to get “ahead of the chains” and 

2get the Commodores’ defense on their heels. Second and medium short, and third and 

short, that’s the formula. Then there’s the red zone. The Bulldogs have had trouble converting 

touchdowns deep in enemy territory. This is a key not only to a victory over Vanderbilt, but 

also down the road if the Bulldogs are going to legitimately make another run at the big prize.

MUSCLE UP FRONT - The Georgia line of scrimmage will be put to the test. Like 

any SEC team, Vanderbilt has been up front. On both sides. Can Georgia out-muscle 

the Commodores and consistently win the battle in the trenches. The Commodores’ 

defensive line will fight to tie up Georgia’s offensive front. Like Georgia, the ‘Dores have 

defenders who can run, particularly at linebacker. Anfernee Orji is one of the top run stuffers 

and tacklers in the league. Georgia must get to him at that second level to get some of those 

Kirby Smart “explosives.”

WIN THE KICKING GAME - This is captain obvious, along with turnovers. That’s 

the path to the upset for the Commodores. A push in these two categories likely would 

mean a win for Georgia. If the Bulldogs can win the battle of the kicking game and 

win the turnover department, then Georgia should prevail. Maybe even by a number close to 

what the boys in the other Clark(e) set. 

BRING THE FIRE - It was great to get a second straight 3:30 p.m. kickoff. The 

reigning national champions are playing a second straight game Between the Hedges, 

5and Sanford Stadium should be rocking. Yes, the Bulldogs just had an emotional game 

with ancient rival Auburn. Yes, there’s an open date - the players and coaches are certainly 

looking forward to - and then the Gators in Jacksonville. Bulldog players and fans feed off 

one another. Smart’s Dogs need both to have full focus and energy for the Commodores on 

Saturday.

GEORGIA VS VANDY

DAWG BONES OFFENSE - GEORGIA 

Coach Smart has something along the lines of “we have more 

talented guys, and they know that” in interviews, and the same 

applies here. From a statistical standpoint Georgia’s offense has 

put up 731 more yards than Vanderbilt and is ranked in the top 

five of total offense in all the FBS. Overall Georgia has more proven 

offensive talent than Vandy heading into the matchup, so the bone 

goes to the Dawgs on this one. 

DAWG BONES DEFENSE - GEORGIA 

Similarly to the offense, Georgia has simply recruited and 

developed better players on this side of the ball compared to 

Vanderbilt. If Vanderbilt’s defense was as stout as Georgia’s, they too 

would be ranked No. 11 in the country in total defense, but that’s 

simply not the case. Vandy has only played two SEC opponents thus 

far. The two being Alabama and Ole Miss where they allowed 55 

and 52 points. The most Georgia has allowed in SEC play has been 

22 against Missouri, and even then a majority of those points can 

be attributed to field goals that the Georgia defense held Missouri’s 

offense to. 

DAWG BONES SPECIAL TEAMS - GEORGIA 

One thing that Georgia prides itself in is its special teams. They only 

put their best players out on special teams, and Vanderbilt probably 

does the same, but again Georgia just boasts a better personnel. 

Another notable fact is that Vandy’s kicker has only attempted three 

field goals on the year. He’s not as tested, and all his kicks have been 

at home. He hasn’t experienced an opposition’s pressure when 

lining up a kick. If Vanderbilt even manages to find themselves in 

a field goal situation, their kicker is in for a nice surprise once he 

meets everyone at Sanford Stadium. 

DAWG BONES COACHING - GEORGIA 

Kirby Smart is objectively a top three coach in this sport. He’s been 

the head and face of his program for seven years while Clark Lea of 

Vanderbilt has only been at Vanderbilt for two seasons including 

this one. It’s not like Lea inheriting a program with the prestige or 

reputation that Kirby Smart did when he took over as the head 

coach of Georgia, so Lea still has a long way to go at Vanderbilt. 

DAWG BONES OVERALL - GEORGIA 

This game should be all Dawgs, and you can tell just from looking 

at the rosters. Comparing the talent on each team, you see that 

Vanderbilt has five players that were ranked as four-stars coming 

out of high school. To put it in perspective Georgia has forty-seven 

players who left high school with a four-star ranking in addition to 

nineteen five-star players (which leads the nation). The Dawgs are a 

better team on paper and on the field, and they should prove it at 

their homecoming game against the Commodores.

SECOND SEASON? 

The Commodores clearly have improved a 

lot, as Lea and his staff have started to flip the 

roster while also bringing in the nation’s No. 

32 recruiting class — the program’s highest in 

almost 10 years. Some amount of skepticism 

will remain among fans until Vanderbilt pushes 

for and makes a bowl game, but overall it seems 

that Lea owns a relatively high approval rating 

considering where the program sat when he 

took over compared to where it sits now. The 

product is a lot better. 

WHAT DOES VANDERBILT NEED TO 

DO TO BEAT GEORGIA? 

I don’t think it’s possible this season given the 

teams’ respective personnel. 

WHAT IS YOUR VIEW ON THE 

BULLDOGS? 

It was odd to see Georgia struggle against 

Missouri, particularly after the dominant win 

over Oregon to start the season. I still think the 

Bulldogs will win the SEC East, and probably in 

a comfortable fashion. But they’re sitting third 

behind Ohio State and Alabama in my book at 

the moment due to the relative lack of offensive 

skill-position studs outside of Brock Bowers. 

WHERE DO YOU RANK SANFORD 

STADIUM AND ATHENS ON YOUR 

PLACES TO VISIT? 

I have only been once, back in 2014, and have 

not been to every SEC stadium or college town. 

Auburn is probably my favorite game experience, 

but Georgia is a close second — and Athens 

is clearly the best college town in the SEC that 

I have been to. It is hard to compare Athens 

and Nashville since Nashville obviously is not a 

college town. 

WHAT DO YOU SEE FOR THE 

FUTURE OF SEC SCHEDULING AND 

ALIGNMENT? 

Cross-division teams need to be playing each 

other more than once every six years. I expect 

the SEC to add a ninth league game and to make 

sure all its teams get to see each other far more 

often. If that is the case, I imagine that divisions 

will have to disappear and the conference’s top 

two teams record-wise will meet in Atlanta. The 

Pac-12 and Big 12 already operate this way. 

WHAT ARE SOME THINGS YOU 

WOULD LIKE TO SEE DONE 

DIFFERENTLY, CHANGED UP IN 

COLLEGE FOOTBALL? 

The transfer portal windows are a nice start. As 

someone who works in recruiting, there are too 

many under-the-table dealings right now that 

still skirt NCAA rules and disadvantage staffs that 

actually run clean programs. Players should have 

to agree to a scholarship agreement for a set 

length of time during which they cannot transfer 

unless both parties agree. If a prospect wants 

maximum flexibility, they can try to negotiate a 

shorter scholarship agreement with the schools 

that are recruiting them. This would also help 

prevent players from being run off.

Bulldawg Illustrated continues its series, featuring long-time UGA personalities of the Fourth Estate. There are many who are published authors along with 

network television superstars. Our sixth installment spotlights Grady alumnus and former longtime Atlanta TV sports broadcaster Bill Hartman. 

In June of 1970, Bill Hartman III, the son of one of Georgia’s legendary 

personalities, became the 11 p.m. sports anchor at WAGA TV in 

Atlanta. 

Just two days prior, he had graduated from the University of 

Georgia’s Henry Grady College of Journalism. From the campus to the 

evening newscast of one of the top stations in the country’s 12th TV 

market, but a decade later would crack the top ten markets in the country. 

That giant leap in TV, would be like skipping the minor leagues and 

starting for a Big-League team as a rookie. 

That was the beginning of a journey that would span 35 years (less 

two years spent with the U. S. Air Force and one as Assistant Sports 

Information Director with the celebrated Dan Magill) with WAGA and 

subsequently WSB-TV. When it came time for retirement in August 2008, 

he continued to cover high school football in Georgia for his former 

employer Chanel 5. His post retirement high school gig with the station 

continued for 13 years. 

“In many ways that was more fun than covering the college and pro 

sports teams,” he says. “We went live from the field a lot of times. The 

coaches were up for most anything because they appreciated the 

coverage.” Not to be overlooked in this was that he is a grass roots 

reporter. He thinks Friday Night Lights is great for our country. 

It was a godsend, he says, to have covered the Braves in the 90s “when 

they won all those divisional championships.” He became friends with 

Bobby Cox, pitchers John Smoltz, Tom Glavine and Greg Maddox. 

He was in Tokyo when the announcement was made that Atlanta would 

host the 1996 Olympics. He had become friends with Billy Payne, dating 

to their days as classmates at Georgia. Not a bad circumstance for being 

friends with the man who masterminded Atlanta’s bid for the Games. In 

Tokyo the night before the announcement, Bill had been in a production 

meeting with the official Japanese producers of the event, which only Bill 

had attended among Atlanta media representatives. 

That familiarity led to him being given a microphone with instructions 

to get on the stage where he interviewed Billy Payne, Mayor Maynard 

Jackson and other officials on a satellite feed which went across the 

world—the ultimate scoop of his career. 

Today, in retirement, he plays golf at the Georgia Club and principally 

follows the Bulldogs, which he started doing when he was in grade 

school. He could even walk to UGA football practice from the family home 

on Dearing Street. 

He learned the inside story of the Bulldogs from his well-connected 

father, Bill Hartman Jr., who was a confidante of Coach Wallace Butts 

and his backfield coach for many years. The senior Hartman developed a 

successful insurance agency on the side and would eventually become 

Chairman of the Georgia Student Educational Fund which evolved into 

the fund which bears his name today. 

If there were breaking news in Athens during Bill’s TV career in Atlanta, 

he could rely on his mother, Ruth, to inform him what was going on. If she 

eaves-dropped on her husband’s conversations, she would ring up young 

Bill and share with him what she knew. While there was never a major 

controversy internally, Bill, the TV reporter, did enjoy a scoop or two. 

Anyone familiar with the Hartman legacy realizes that the demeanor 

of the father was passed on to the son. William Coleman Hartman Jr., a 

model alumnus who was always making behind the scenes contributions 

to UGA, was a man given to laid back living with a measured style of 

giving back. He was never too high or too low emotionally which enabled 

him to maintain friendships on both sides of an issue which greatly 

benefitted the University. 

The son, a broadcaster with insightful, fact filled presentations never 

went into a rant. That would have been as unthinkable as a Hartman 

dressing in anything other than Red and Black. He never was depressed or 

down. He enjoyed his work and made a lot of friends for his station(s) with 

his style, integrity, and modus operandi. 

Bill’s career included interaction with some of the biggest names in 

sport—from Hank Aaron of the Braves to Muhammed Ali, the great prize 

fighter, the major college and professional coaches who passed through 

Atlanta and countless sports personalities who visited Atlanta. 

He would address issues when appropriate, but mainly he wanted to 

tell the story of happenings on the Atlanta sports scene and finding off 

beat stories that warmed the hearts of viewers. He covered the Braves, 

Falcons and other sports teams when they went to the World Series and 

the Super Bowl. When his alma mater won the national collegiate football 

championship in New Orleans in 1980, he was there covering the event 

with professional dignity but underneath a very proud alumnus who 

literally grew up on Georgia Bulldog football. 

When Georgia Tech won a national title in 1990, he covered the Yellow 

Jackets’ championship run in a manner befitting his role as an Atlanta 

broadcaster. “I knew the coaches and players at Georgia when they won 

the championship in 1980 and it was the same with Tech ten years later. I 

was friends with both teams and enjoyed relationships with each school.” 

To enjoy the journey Bill Hartman experienced and look back, realizing 

you were competent—and was also universally known as a gentleman— 

has to be rewarding and fulfilling.

How to use an ATM machine (we didn’t have one in Nashville) and 

that calculus was created by forces of evil. Also, that I was good at 

making friends. Those I met at UGA remain the best of my life. 

WHAT PROFESSOR DID YOU MOST ADMIRE? 

Dr. Fred Stephenson. He was a logistics professor and was very 

practical. He was accomplished, yet humble and taught by 

sharing his real-life experiences. I always appreciated him. 

WHICH HISTORICAL FIGURE DO YOU MOST 

IDENTIFY WITH? 

I’d have to go with Sir Thomas Carlyle. His philosophy was one of 

duty, work, and silence. 

WHO ARE YOUR HEROES IN REAL LIFE? 

First and foremost, my dad. Few have experienced and 

accomplished as much as he has. Also, those who provide 

healthcare to the elderly and to critically ill children, I cannot 

think of anything more worthwhile.

WHAT IS YOUR IDEA OF PERFECT HAPPINESS? 

Well first and foremost, I want my family to be content and for 

my children to experience all the good that life has to offer. As 

pertains to UGA, I can’t think of anything much better than being 

in Athens on a perfect fall Saturday tailgating with my friends 

to include Chad, Carlton, Wes, Phillip, Chitty, Gordon and all my 

other friends who love the Dawgs. I went to my first game in 

Athens in 1980 when Herschel burst onto the scene. My dad and 

Mr. Peddy Parker took my brother Matt, Trip, Parish, and me and I 

still have vivid memories of that. I’ve been hooked since. 

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE YOUR GREATEST 

ACHIEVEMENT? 

Well, my wife Julie has put up with me for 23 years which is quite 

a feat. I have also been blessed to work with the same wonderful 

people for 22 years now. We live in a wonderful community 

where we are loved by special friends. I’d have to say that these 

are the things for which I am most thankful. 

WHAT IS YOUR MOST MARKED CHARACTERISTIC? 

For better or worse, I am stubborn. Sometimes that’s a good 

thing, other times not-so much. 

WHAT DO YOU MOST VALUE IN YOUR FRIENDS? 

Well, Chad has a beach house with free parking, Chitty has a 

Game Day condo that I can use, Wes takes care of the Florida 

game parking scenario, David handles my house renovation 

needs, Justin has a nice pool, Carlton lives near the beach, and 

Mitchell used to have a nice truck. 

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT 

YOURSELF, WHAT WOULD IT BE? 

It’s hard to narrow this down to one thing. I guess I wish I was less 

risk-averse. 

WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE WRITERS? 

Winston Groom and Lewis Grizzard. Groom is best known for 

Forest Gump of course, but he has also written several historical 

war novels which are really good. Lewis Grizzard will always be 

the standard to which others are compared when it comes to 

southern humor. When I was at UGA, he authored two articles 

each week in the AJC. I remember folks passing the paper around 

in class. Perhaps we should have been listening to the professor. 

FAVE SOCIAL MEDIA AND WHO TO FOLLOW? 

I’ve recently been into Twitter. My friend Craig turned me on to 

Club Pro Guy. Now that’s a pro with whom I can relate.

LOOKS TO BUILD ON THE LADY DAWGS’ RICH TRADITION 

In a time when women’s basketball 

was nowhere near as popular as it is 

now, Iowa native Katie Abrahamson- 

Henderson came to the University of 

Georgia in 1986 with a winning whim. 

College women’s basketball was never 

televised, Googling a Lady Dogs roster, 

game or schedule was not invented, so 

for Abrahamson-Henderson, the only 

news she heard about the Lady Dogs was 

from Coach Andy Landers and his staff. 

However, some itch for Athens drew this 

young lady from Iowa to the south and to 

UGA. 

“I wanted to play for the best,” said 

Abrahamson-Henderson. “I wanted to be 

the best and go to the Final Four. I wanted 

all of that good stuff… Plus, I really like the 

warm weather.” 

Similar to 1986, Coach ‘ABE,’ as she is 

commonly referred to, found herself with 

yet another offer to come to Athens, but 

this time, to be the head coach of the Lady 

Dogs. This time, however, she was coming 

from an already hot climate, not the 

midwest, and a University of Central Florida 

program where she made history. 

“To get me away from UCF, it had to be 

something special,” said Abrahamson- 

Henderson. “I never knew this job would 

open up. I turned down a lot of jobs, so I 

knew I wouldn’t leave UCF unless it was 

something like this. I know what Andy 

[Landers] built here, and it’s a special place 

because of that.” 

On March 26, 2022, at this special place, 

the new era for the Georgia women’s 

basketball program officially began with 

Abrahamson-Henderson. For just the third 

time in the Lady Dog’s historic 49 years, 

they hired a new head coach. For the first 

time in program history, a former Lady Dog 

is at the helm. 

Abrahamson-Henderson has one 

glamorous resumé as both a player and 

a coach. While a Lady Dog, she helped 

Georgia snatch the 1986 Southeastern 

Conference title. After transferring to Iowa 

following her sophomore season, she won 

two more Big Ten championships. In her 17 

years of head coaching, Coach ABE secured 

16 total conference championships (nine 

tournament championships and seven 

regular season). 

That championship mentality is 

fortunately some of the baggage 

Abrahamson-Henderson carries with her 

and a mindset she hopes to return to the 

Georgia people and the Lady Dogs. 

“It starts with recruiting,” Abrahamson- 

Henderson said. “We need players who 

want to play our brand of basketball, and 

we need players who love this school as 

much as we do, as much as I do.” 

Abrahamson-Henderson said the brand 

of Power 5 and particularly SEC schools 

attracts those best recruits in the country, a 

novelty she’s never experienced. 

Prior to her six seasons at UCF, 

Abrahamson-Henderson spent time as a 

head coach at Albany and Missouri State. 

Though she led those teams to conference 

titles and postseason berths, it was hard 

to compete in recruiting with the Power 5 

schools. 

The history made at those schools and 

success she had without the top recruits 

still stands as one of the most impressive 

feats a college coach can do and does 

not go unnoticed. From 2002-2006, 

Abrahamson-Henderson won four straight 

conference titles at Missouri State and took 

them to three NCAA Tournaments. She also 

led the Lady Bears to a WNIT championship. 

At Albany, she led the Great Danes to 

five straight conference titles and five 

straight NCAA Tournaments. Last season, 

Abrahamson-Henderson won 26 games at 

UCF, a school record, a No. 7 seeding in the 

NCAA Tournament, highest seed in school 

history, and a conference title. 

Abrahamson-Henderson built cultures 

at those schools. She built brands that 

convinced her players to buy in, which 

led to all the success and history she had. 

Now, at an SEC school, a historic Lady Dogs 

program, the sky’s the limit for the success 

she can have here. With that hopeful 

success comes a burden at a program that 

expects tournament bids and conference 

championships, but Abrahamson- 

Henderson is not looking to create her own 

history, just continue the tradition already 

in place. 

“I have a sense of pride for Georgia, a 

lot,” Abrahamson-Henderson said. “What 

this school means to Andy and all my past 

teammates, that means a lot to me. There 

is a lot of pride and tradition all around 

here, and I don’t have to build that, which 

is awesome. Now, I get to come in here and 

leave my little stamp on the already great 

history.” 

As her words have said, Coach Landers, 

her former coach and the father of the Lady 

Dogs program holds a significant place in 

her heart and the heart of all the Bulldog 

Nation. She said Coach Landers is like her 

Pat Summit. The program that he built from 

the ground up, Abrhamson-Henderson is 

quite simply honored and proud to be a 

part of once again. 

This new era with Abrahamson- 

Henderson and her incredible staff have 

brought in transfers from UCF and other 

schools along with players who have been 

at Georgia. But, this new staff has pulled 

in some very talented recruits in the short 

six months they have been here. However, 

even with new faces, Abrahamson- 

Henderson’s goal is not to change tradition 

or make a name for herself but to continue 

the success we have all seen the Lady Dogs 

have. With young women who buy into 

the Georgia brand, the history within those 

Stegeman Coliseum walls will be continued 

and success will be had.

Let’s see, Georgia beat Auburn by 32 points and covered the 

spread. Why did the game feel much closer? 

I’m blaming the “feel” of the game on the relatively slow start. 

Auburn came to Athens ready to make the rivalry meaningful 

once again. The combination of Auburn’s aggressive play and an 

ineffective passing game by the Dawgs cast a here-we-go-again 

pall over the crowd after Georgia struggled in the passing game, 

and the masses never regained the spirit that trouncing Auburn 

usually brings out. 

Daijun Edwards continued showcasing his running style 

gaining 83 yards on 12 tough carries. Edwards may look 

undersized, but when he breaks up field and contact is 

imminent, linebackers and defensive backs had better be ready 

for a violent collision. Daijun doesn’t blink. 

However, I want to talk about another running back today, 

Branson Robinson. Robinson comes from the Elijah Holyfield 

school of running back conditioning; with massive arms and 

legs, he must be a nightmare for would-be tacklers. He ended 

the day as Georgia’s leading rusher with 98 yards on 12 carries, 

and Kirby Smart noted in his postgame interview: 

“The addition of Branson was really big for us; he’s a guy we felt 

like all week we had to get more opportunities for him because 

he’s run the ball well in practice. He’s got a bit of a burst, and 

was able to get some carries with Kendall being banged up and 

I thought he did a good job.” 

Robinson’s power and speed will propel him to a more 

significant role in the offense. Remember, he is a freshman who 

enrolled in the summer and did not have the advantage of spring 

practice to get him up to speed on Todd Monken’s offense. 

Quality depth at running back is critical in the SEC wars, and the 

meat of the 2022 schedule is still ahead of the Dawgs. Edwards 

and Robinson have shown they are ready for the challenge.

A look back at what decided the game 

between Georgia and Auburn.

Branson Robinson rushed for 8.2 yards a 

carry which resulted in 98 yards on only 12 

carries. The freshman running back from 

42-10 

Mississippi came in with loads of hype 

related to his physique, star rating, and 

running style, and in his first legitimate 

chance to show off his ability, he certainly 

made the most of it. Georgia has been 

looking for a spark in the running game after 

two lackadaisical weeks against Kent State 

and Missouri, and Robinson seems to be the 

spark the Dawgs have been looking for.

Georgia had 22 first downs conversions 

during the game. The Dawgs, especially 

in the second half, did a phenomenal job 

moving the ball in numerous ways. Stetson 

Bennett made numerous impressive 3rd 

down conversions while the running game 

seriously contributed towards the Bulldogs 

ability to move the ball. Georgia had over 

double the amount of first downs that 

Auburn had, proving that UGA is still moving 

the ball efficiently.

Georgia rushed the ball for almost 300 

yards against Auburn. The Dawgs’ scored 

six touchdowns on the ground Saturday 

afternoon proving that their ground game 

is not worth underestimating. Despite the 

fact that Georgia lost Zamir White and 

James Cook, they have a number of backs 

capable of filling in the rushing void left by 

the current 5NFL players. Unfortunately, it 

seems that Kendal Milton may be sidelined 

with a hamstring injury. Still, with Daijun 

Edwards and Branson Robinson playing as 

well as they are, with the threat of Stetson 

Bennett’s legs, Georgia should be positioned 

comfortably to pose a serious threat on the 

ground in upcoming games.

Georgia accumulated over 500 yards of 

total offense. The Bulldogs have combined 

for over 400 yards of offense every game 

played this year, going 500 or more through 

four of the six games they’ve played. Even 

when it seems they’ve struggled offensively, 

this shows how dangerous they are when 

moving the football. Todd Monken is heavily 

regarded as one of the best offensive minds 

in college football and he is proving why he 

deserves his hefty two-million-dollar salary.

Not the statistic everyone is dying for, but 

certainly, one that could contribute to 

Georgia reaching its maximum potential 

for this 2022 campaign. Brett Thorson, the 

freshman punter from Australia, put 5/5 

punts inside Auburn’s 20-yard line. This 

contributed a significant amount towards 

the defensive success Georgia was able 

to have, unlike last weekend in Missouri 

where the Dawg’s defense had to start many 

possessions near the 50-yard line. Playing 

the field position game is an underrated 

battle that Thorson, in his first real chance, 

showed he is more than capable of helping 

the Dawgs utilize. Expect Thorson’s monster 

leg and ability to switch the field play a 

more significant role than some may think in 

future games for UGA

OFFENSIVE PLAYER 

Branson Robinson - The freshman sensation from the great 

state of Mississippi is making quite an impression with a strong 

performance against Auburn, leading the team in rushing yards. 

He produced 98 yards on 12 carries for an astonishing 8.2 a 

clip. On Robinson ‘s touchdown run, he showed speed, finesse, 

and churning legs that reminded me of Nick Chubb. His effort 

is relentless and he pushed his way into the end zone with his 

strength and tremendous blocking from the offensive line. As 

we move down the stretch of our SEC schedule, Branson is an 

addition that we needed and he will only get better every game 

every carry. 

DEFENSIVE PLAYER 

Nolan Smith - The Savvy Senior from Savannah, Georgia 

continues to show his value by leading a tenacious defense 

against Auburn. When Nolan decided to come back, that was a 

win for Georgia and the way Nolan is playing right now is another 

win for Georgia. His disciplined performance Saturday against 

Auburn enabled Georgia to limit the Tigers to 93 yards rushing 

as Nolan recorded three solo tackles and one of those being for a 

loss. It’s good to see Nolan out there and his leadership will never 

be more important as we whip Vandy and head into our final 

stretch to defend our title. 

SPECIAL TEAM PLAYER 

Brett Thorson - This Australian is blooming into a top notch 

collegiate punter. After a slow start to the season with very few 

punts, Brett came on Saturday versus Auburn to have his most 

effective game yet as a Bulldog. Anytime we punt the ball, it’s a 

big play and Brett took full advantage of landing five of his punts 

inside the 20 yard line. In fact, he averaged punting our defense in 

position starting at the opponents 10 yard line. That is a formula 

to win the special teams challenge. His punts were high and 

gave our gunners time to get down and properly cover the punt 

returner. Nothing could be finer than to see Brett shine as he gets 

to experience a tremendous SEC challenge in the next five games. 

We will need that effective punting to enable us to defend the 

title. Great job mate!

As we head to the ides of October, with the regular season of college 

football dead on at the midpoint, there are conference races taking 

shape and some surprising shakeups in the standings. Tennessee and 

Mississippi State were the two big winners of the day in the Southeastern 

Conference. The PAC-12 is looking good at the top. 

1. GEORGIA - The Bulldogs dominated after the first 

quarter and took down ancient nemesis Auburn to make 

it 6-0. Georgia has won 15 of the last 18 meetings with 

Auburn. It’s a second straight game at Sanford Stadium Saturday 

with an improved Vandy visiting. 

2. ALABAMA - It was a huge survival win against 

Texas A&M. Will Bryce Young be back for the Volunteers? 

The Crimson Tide has never lost to Tennessee under Nick 

Saban’s watch. This could be their biggest challenge against the 

Vols since 2009. 

3. OHIO STATE - The Buckeyes offense is smoking 

hot, putting up monster numbers week after week. They 

peaked last week in a 49-20 drubbing of Michigan State. 

Ohio State is off this week and then host Iowa in The Horseshoe. 

4. TENNESSEE - The Volunteers are riding their 

highest of highs in two decades. Their resume is 

impressive and the 40-13 victory at LSU was an eyeopener. 

Now comes the big battle with Alabama and the Vols are 

looking for another breakthrough win. 

5. CLEMSON - The Tigers have found their footing 

offensively, and the defensive front seven is maybe the 

most talented in the country. There was no trap at BC 

with Clemson winning 31-3. Dabo’s team heads to Tallahassee 

Saturday night. 

6. SOUTHERN CAL - The Trojans took care of 

Washington State 30-14 to make it 6-0. Lincoln Riley has 

provided the major boost, while Oklahoma has fallen 

fast. Now comes a major test, as the Trojans tangle with Utah in Salt 

Lake City. 

7. MICHIGAN - The Wolverines pulled away in a tough 

battle with Indiana, dominating the second half, and 

topping the Hoosiers 31-10. Now comes one of the 

biggest games in the Big Ten this season. It’s Penn State coming off 

an open date. 

8. OLE MISS - The Rebels were shaky in the first half 

against Vanderbilt, but turned things on and pulled 

away from the Commodores to win 52-28. Auburn, which is 

going through a tough time, visits the grove Saturday for the 

early kickoff. 

9. MISSISSIPPI STATE - The Maroon Bulldogs 

followed up their impressive victory over Texas A&M 

with an even more impressive win against Arkansas. 

MSU rolled to a 40-17 victory over the Razorbacks. The gauntlet 

continues Saturday night at Kentucky. 

10. OKLAHOMA STATE - The Cowboys pulled 

out a 41-31 shootout against Texas Tech this past 

Saturday to make it 5-0. Now comes TCU in a battle of 

the top two teams in the Big XII thus far this season. 

11. OREGON - The Ducks have played outstanding 

football since losing to Georgia in the season opener. 

They cruised past Arizona 49-22. Like UCLA, Oregon is 

off this week and the stage will be set for a huge PAC 12 battle 

in Eugene. 

12. UCLA - Chip Kelly’s Bruins got the breakthrough 

win and UCLA is now 6-0. A 42-32 win over Utah 

stamps this team legitimate. UCLA is off this Saturday 

and then comes a huge battle with Oregon in Eugene. 

13. TCU - The Horned Frogs are undefeated, 

following up their blowout of Oklahoma with a 38-31 

win at previously undefeated Kansas with Gameday 

on hand. As all predicted for Week Six. Dan Jenkins is 

smiling upstairs. Okie State comes to Fort Worth Saturday. 

14. PENN STATE - The Nittany Lions were off this 

past weekend to gear up for the monster matchup 

against Michigan in the Big House. Penn State can 

play its way into contention. The Nittany Lions have gotten 

some newcomer punch this year. 

15. NORTH CAROLINA STATE - The Wolfpack 

put up an impressive 19-17 win over Florida State at 

a packed house in Raleigh. N.C. State has a tough one 

coming up Saturday at Syracuse. It can be really tough 

in the Carrier Dome.
