COMMUNITY REPORT
RISE UNITED
OUR MISSION
The United Way of Youngstown and the
Mahoning Valley will create positive change by
collaborating with partners to educate and
empower children and families across the
Mahoning Valley
DEAR FRIENDS:
As a modern United Way, we have transformed and refined our impact in the
Mahoning Valley over the past 102 years, growing from an organization that
began by collecting funds to innovators who focus on community needs and
identify gaps where we can step in and step up to make a real and positive
difference on those who need us the most in the Mahoning Valley. While the
pandemic heightened urgent and emerging needs, United Way has always been
positioned to lead and collaborate by understanding the problems, identifying
disparities, and improving lives through direct service, collaboration,
volunteerism and advocacy.
Our goal is to leverage funds with a purpose, as we did in 2021. Entering the
third years of the Covid Crisis our United Way feeds hungry children and
families, provides basic and essentials needs, supports nonprofit partners who
suffered drops in funding and helps rebuild our community.
On the fundraising side, we shared our story with our donors and volunteers
that we were maximizing every dollar for impact where our community needed
it most. We recognize we cannot do this work alone. It will continue to take all
of us, United, to make real change for those who are the most vulnerable.
We are so thankful to the thousands of donors who trust and believe in our
work. A special thank you to the hundreds of volunteers, who on many frigid
Saturdays, unload and pack food monthly for up to 400 families. A thank you
as well to the volunteers who read to our children, those who Christmas shop to
make certain our students in afterschool will have gifts on Christmas morning
and the many other volunteer opportunities that so many of you support. Your
loyal giving and volunteering is what makes all of us who work at United Way so
proud and appreciative of all of you.
We will continue to expand our work in 2022 and take on whatever challenges
come our way.
Together, we LIVE UNITED.
United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley
LEADING OUR COMMUNITY TO A
STRONGER AND HEALTHIER FUTURE
When the world came to a stop, The United Way of Youngstown and
the Mahoning Valley took a stand. RISING to face the unprecedented
challenges brought on by the COVID-19 Pandemic.
In 2020, our United Way positioned ourselves as the backbone of the
pandemic response.
In 2021, we took the lead in our community’s recovery to a stronger
healthier future.
COVID-19
RECOVERY
Today, the pandemic is still here. It’s taken on new forms and new variants.
As it evolves so does our United Way. We are now looking to the future
and focusing on what we need to do to best provide for our students and
families. That means changing the way we do things. We don’t want to
keep doing something just because that’s the way it has always been done.
One lesson the pandemic has taught us is that we need to innovate and
lead the way to a stronger, healthier Mahoning Valley.
Josephine Minor
Satur-Day of Caring Recipient
“It’s good for a person
socially. You touch each
other mentally, and through
the heart. So I would say the
United Way is the heart of
Youngstown.”
Tony DiTommaso Jr.
Secretary Treasurer, Western Reserve Building Trades
“To be able to get the whole
team out here today, this is
a great thing the United Way
does for the 400 plus
families. This one day is
going to affect this person’s
life. It just, it really lifts your
spirit.”
SATUR-DAY OF CARING
Food insecurity was the main issue we all faced when COVID-19 hit in 2020.
Our Satur-Day of Caring started with an idea that took less than a week to plan and
execute. Over the next 365 days it drastically grew as more and more seniors,
shut-ins, and families were identified by our non-profit and school partners. From 100
households that first week, to 400 a year later, Satur-Day of Caring became a vital part
of our COVID-19 Recovery.
As we served more people, more volunteers showed up every third Saturday to help.
High school athletes, honor students, bankers, union members, entire families, flag
football teams, nurses, doctors, coaches, college athletes, college students,
the list goes on. People from all walks of life, of all ages worked side-by-side to
unload and pack the food bags.
100 drivers and their helpers spreading out over 50 routes did more than just drop off
food. They formed special bonds - delivering special treats, birthday wishes, holiday
presents and, more importantly, a smile and conversation.
Our donors not only stepped up financially, but they also got creative - they purchased
a prize steer from the Canfield Fair and donated that beef, they sent first aid kits,
socks, and homemade cards to those in need.
Annually, we are helping more than 8,000 people through this initiative.
SATUR-DAY OF CARING CHRISTMAS FOOD GIVEAWAY
The United Way of Youngstown and the
Mahoning Valley wanted to make sure all
children, families and seniors were taken
care of for the Holiday Season. Through our
partnership with Southwoods Health and
Chris and Ed Muransky, we hosted the second
annual Satur-Day of Caring Christmas Food
Giveaway. We distributed 600 hams and
holiday food boxes filled with fresh foods
and non-perishable items through a drive-thru
food giveaway.
In addition to the drive-thru food giveaway, we
also packed and delivered food and
essentials to our 400 Satur-Day of Caring
families and shut-ins across the Mahoning
Valley. Through our Satur-Day of Caring
Christmas Food Giveaway, we served over
6,000 people food and essentials for the
holidays.
VOLUNTEERS
VOLUNTEERS
60
MENTORS
OVER 2,000
VOLUNTEERS
The Mahoning Valley has the reputation of helping in big ways when times get tough, and they
proved that once again during the pandemic. Volunteers are key to our United Way. We cannot
do the work we do without our volunteers - from our Board members who guide our
organization to the young children who show up with their parents at Satur-Day of Caring.
Every single person makes an impact. Since 2020, our volunteer base has exploded! In 2021,
we engaged more than 500 volunteers for the very first time. While many join us the third
Saturday of every month, many more help us with our early education programs. They serve as
tutors and mentors to the children in our partner schools.
WOMEN UNITED
Where there is a need, Women lead
Women United used the pandemic as a chance to restart and refocus. Our Success After 6
staff noticed there was a significant rise in basic needs amongst our students -
clothing, hygiene products, school supplies, shoes. Students were going without so much.
The Women United steering committee decided to direct the groups funds to fulfilling
emergencey requests. In 2021, Women United raised $14,000. Those funds led to two
major projects - providing 250 hygiene kits to students going back-to-school and 500 pairs
of hats and gloves during the winter months. Women United also answered 24 requests
and distributed $8,000 in emergency requests purchasing everything from Wi-Fi hotspots to
grocery store gift cards. All needs many of us take for granted, but those children go
without every day.
SUCCESS AFTER 6
Throughout spring, some schools returned to face-to-face while others continued virtually. Our
afterschool teams continued to engage children face-to-face while also creating experiences
for children and families through virtual learning. In the fall of 2021, all students returned to
the classroom and our team brought in enrichment partners and continued our family
engagement nights. We strive to have 70% attendance for our Success After 6 programs. In
2021, we averaged over 80% attendance across the 9 schools we are currently in.
A total of 232 children had the opportunity to participate in weekly enrichment, tutouring, arts,
and wellness programs.
“The United Way Success After 6 Program has been vital to the academic and non-academic
enrichment of our K-2 students. The interactive intervention and enrichment activities have
shown increased academic achievement in reading, mathematics, social and emotional
behaviors, and increased parental involvement. We look forward to continuing the
partnership with the United Way and the Success After 6 Program at Girard City Schools
for years to come.”
SUCCESS AFTER 6
As summer approached, we took on a new project with Youngstown City Schools to
help with the learning loss during the COVID-19 Pandemic. The Summer initiative
consisted of two sessions and served over 300 K-3 students. Children received three
days of academic assistance from teachers. Two days were devoted to enrichment
programming provided by the United Way.
VISION
QUOTE
VELLO
QUOTE
Vello began in 2021 and offers one-on-one
reading sessions for students and tutors
through a safe and secure digital setting.
The program began in Liberty, and has
since expanded to Austintown, Girard,
Sebring, and Youngstown Community
School.
543 tutoring sessions took place during
2021 with a total of 40 students in the
first and second grade taking part.
Thanks to the YSU Nursing students for
helping us provide vision screenings to 1,000
students. Of those children, 256 were referred
to the doctors from Sight for All United.
Collectively we distributed two FREE pairs of
glasses, for a total of 280 pairs, to 140
students at Youngstown Community School,
Campbell, and Liberty schools.
REPORT CARD MENTORING
Our Report Card Mentoring initiative returned
to in-person at Youngstown Community
School. 100 students met with Mentors from
around the community to review grades,
attendance and behavior. Mentees set goals
for themselves to improve in the classroom
with the assistance of their Mentors.
SUCCESS BY 6
As students prepared to return to face-to-face learning in 2021, our United Way
began transitioning back to in-person programming. Our Success By 6 staff
worked tirelessly to welcome students and their families back over the
summer months. 588 children across 18 school districts participated in our
Kindergarten Readiness initiative, showing improvement in math, literacy, and
social emotional development. Students displayed a 9 point overall gain, based
on the new assessment from the Ohio Early Childhood Learning Standards.
“The greatest benefits of the Success By 6 program is that it
gives students an opportunity to experience kindergarten before
the school year actually starts. This ‘jump start’ helps students to
work on their social skills and learn classroom routines.
My favorite part of the program is watching the growth that
happens in just a few short weeks.”
IMAGINATION LIBRARY
In 2014, United Way launched the
Imagination Library in Mahoning County.
This initiative promotes the love of
reading at the earliest of ages. In 2019,
Governor Mike DeWine launched the
Ohio Governor’s Imagination Library
expanding the reach of the program. In
2021, we partnered with Akron Children’s
Hospital to help expand our reach.
Over 6,000 children across Mahoning
County, birth to age 5, received one
FREE book a month. We continue to
work to increase our reach with this
initiative by offering special
programming with our partner schools.
As of the end of 2021, we have a total of
6,329 children registered and over 8,000
have graduated from the program.
YOUNG WOMEN’S MENTORSHIP
Our Young Women’s Mentorship Program connects 5th and 6th-grade girls with positive
women role models. For the 2020-2021 school year, 19 girls from Boardman and 14 girls
from Taft were supported by 31 mentors. With the challenges presented within the wake of
the pandemic, our counselors and mentors were able to adjust to the virtual world of
communication. As we transitioned back to in-person programming, we returned to weekly
group meetings and one-on-one sessions that have reflected in improved behavior and
performance in the classroom.
For the 2021-2022 school year we are able to impact a total of 33 young women.
100%
Of the girls
participating showed
improvement in their
behavior in and out
of the classroom.
91%
Improved their
attendance.
97%
Maintained or improved
their grades
throughout the year.
“We get to do activities with the girls. Share our knowledge with
them. I think these young ladies need mentors. It’s good for
women to participate and lend some different information and
companionship to these girls.”
- Patricia Watson, United Way Mentor
“I think it’s important for the girls to understand what it is to
give back to their communities. Working with these girls and
encouraging them to be the best versions of themselves. I
think that helps them gain more confidence and want to do
the things they aspire to do.”
- Allison Thomas, Simon Roofing, United Way Mentor

PARTNER AGENCIES
To live better, we must LIVE UNITED. The best way we can do that is to support our
non-profit partners. Our United Way strived to be the backbone organization that
other non-profits could turn to during these challenging times.
Agencies reach thousands of people in need through Early Education and Emergency
Services. The pandemic not only increased the number of people in need, it
drastically changed how agencies responded. To provide some consistency, we
decided to fund our agencies on a one-year funding cycle. This allowed them to
maintain their operations and assess how to move forward. Thanks to generous
donors we were also able to provide emergency recovery funds to these agencies.
We are proud of the work they accomplished in 2021. It was not an easy task, but
they were relentless in helping our neighbors in need.
2021 CAMPAIGN
When the COVID-19 Pandemic heightened urgent
and emerging needs, our United Way was uniquely
positioned and built for this work by improving lives
through direct service, collaboration, volunteerism,
and advocacy. Our role as a leader in the non-profit
community during this crisis inspired our donors
to generously support our work. That is the biggest
reason we surpassed our campaign goal and raised
$3,476,600, which is the most money we have
raised in an annual campaign in our 102-year
history.
Message From Campaign Chairs
“We both have seen firsthand the amazing work the United Way does in the community.
We serve as Report Card Mentors, we volunteer for the Satur-Day of Caring, and help with the
Christmas Gift Drive for the Success After 6 programs every year. We are extremely honored
to take on the role of co-chairs for the campaign. The community needs to know about the
excellent work the United Way does for our neighbors in need. We want to bring that
message to everyone and knew we could do it in this role.”
CAMPAIGN & VOLUNTEER AWARDS
We entered the 2021 campaign with cautious optimism. We knew there would be plenty
of challenges caused by the continuing pandemic. But with many of the restrictions
being lifted, we were able to get back to in person presentations. Under the amazing
leadership of our Campaign Chairs, Chris and Lisa Sammartino, we were able to raise
the most money ever. They were joined by others throughout the Mahoning Valley to
help achieve this goal. Dave Baker of Sweeney Chevrolet Buick GMC has led their
campaign for years, but he does so quietly and without fanfare. This year he helped
Sweeney employees reach a new level by setting an ambitious goal and helping them
achieve it within their own company. Similarly, Eric Carlson of “Joe” Dickey Electric
helped lead his employees to a record-breaking year as well. For their work, leadership
and dedication to United Way, Dave and Eric are the 2021 Campaign Leadership Award
recipients. Our Partnership with labor is vital to our Mission. Bill Padisak, Mahoning/
Trumbull AFL-CIO Labor Council, leads this effort on many levels. You can find Bill not
only advocating for the United Way, but he also rolls up his sleeves and volunteers on a
regular basis. He drives to Sebring, our farthest route, every Satur-Day of Caring!
Over the next few years our Board of Directors will be going through a transistion as many
of our members will be stepping down due to term limits. This year we want to thank this
core group by presenting them with the Parker McHenry Board Excellence Award. They
have all contributed greatly to our United Way, and helped shape it into the organization
it is today. Their leadership has been invaluable. Thank you for your years of service on
CAMPAIGN & VOLUNTEER AWARDS
Our volunteers have become an integral part of our work. Each year we have groups of
individuals who go above and beyond to make sure our United Way is successful, and we reach
the most people in need. When Satur-Day of Caring started, we were using multiple people’s pick
up trucks until one person came forward and offered his company truck with a lift gate. Brian
Crumbacher of “Joe” Dickey Electric now shows up every third Saturday before everyone else
to pick up the groceries. He made the process so much more efficient. But more than that, he
never says no to what we need. For this, Brian is our Volulnteer Excellence Award Recipient.
HUMBLE HERO AWARD
Denise DeBartolo York
Denise DeBartolo York plays a huge part in
our work. She exemplifies the principles of
the 11 founding members by making a
difference without the intention of any
recognition personally, but whose impact
makes a major difference in the Mahoning
Valley.
IMPACT LEADERSHIP AWARD
Chris & Ed Muransky and Family
The Muransky family is truly one of a kind.
They work closely with our United Way to
make sure our students, and their families,
are taken care of, as well as our seniors and
shut-ins. Chris Muransky sits on our Board
and Ed Muransky is helping us look to the
future with our volunteer engagement. For
all their work with our United Way and in the
community, we are honoring them with the
Impact Leadership Award.
High school students are always looking to volunteer hours, and while some are just
looking for their sheets to be signed, others take that additional step. Every third
Saturday our United Way knows we can rely on two groups of students - Boardman High
School’s Emerging Leaders and Valley Christian eagleSERVE. These students are there
to help. We can rely on them to get the job done, and to be the responsible ones to make
sure it is done right. We are proud to present them with the Rising Star Awards.
LEADERSHIP
United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley founded the Leadership Club in 1983. The investment made
at the Leadership Level starts at $1,000, and since the inception, these generous donors have helped us achieve
our goal each year. In 2021, the 222 members of our Leadership Club truly stepped up by donating $683,400.
Our Legacy Society provides information to donors on how they can include United Way as part of their legacy and
help improve the lives of children and families in the Mahoning Valley for years to come. Several loyal donors have
joined the Legacy Society, and we are thankful for their commitment.
LEADERSHIP
United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley started the Gelbman
Emerging Leaders Club in 2017 as a way to step up into the Leadership Club.
Anyone who increased their gift to $500 or more was matched by the Frank
and Pearl Gelbman Charitable Foundation. We want to thank these generous
individuals who made that increase to their annual contribution. This year
we welcomed 58 new members to the Gelbman Emerging Leaders Club who
raised $34,400.
