over facility

GETTING A new community 

facility over the line is one 

of the first priorities for new 

Burwood Ward city councillor 

Kelly Barber. 

Barber, along with the 

trustees at the Marshland Hall 

Trust, has been advocating for 

a facility in Prestons Park ‘for a 

long time’. 

But now he has stepped up 

from community board level to 

a city councillor. 

“I’ll highlight the needs of 

a community facility in the 

Marshland and Burwood 

community to other 

councillors,” Barber said. 

In spite of thousands of new 

homes in the area, he said there 

are no nearby community 

facilities. 

“The nearest one is about 

6km away. 

“Since the earthquakes, 

people of the Burwood Ward 

have lost a lot of meeting places 

and spaces.” 

Barber described his win in 

Saturday’s election as “surreal”. 

“It’s fantastic. It’s interesting 

when you’ve been working 

towards something for six 

months and then it finally 

arrived.” 

He won a seat at the council 

table by gaining a total of 

3628 votes to former chair of 

The People’s Choice Michelle 

Lomax’s 2333. 

His other priorities include 

supporting local organisations, 

repairing infrastructure and 

flooding issues in the area. 

Barber said these are what 

people told him after knocking 

on thousands of doors.

Fixing the east side will be ‘frustrating’

“IT’LL BE another three years of 

frustration – but I’m up for it.” 

That’s what Jo Zervos, a long time 

campaigner for New Brighton, said 

about being re-elected onto the new 

Waitai Coastal-Burwood-Linwood 

Community Board. 

The board has replaced the Waitai 

Coastal-Burwood Community 

Board. 

After the 2019 local body elections, 

Zervos was the only board 

member living in 

New Brighton until 

city councillor Celeste 

Donovan won the 

Coastal Ward byelection 

in October 

last year.

“So I was pretty 

much alone trying to 

push the barrel and 

get things done. But it’s hard to do it 

yourself,” Zervos said. 

She said she believed the city 

council has ignored her ideas to 

improve New Brighton. 

“It probably was heard but probably 

was ignored. This is one of the 

reasons why the residents are dissatisfied 

with the council.” 

She cited the lack of improvements 

to the Pages Rd bridge leading into 

New Brighton as an example. 

Zervos also said residents were not 

consulted over a regeneration plan, 

which proposed changing the route 

of New Brighton Rd. 

“The consultation was supposed to 

be in February but then got delayed

until June. And now they (council) 

delayed it to after the election. That’s 

a whole year wasted on delaying the 

process. 

“The residents still don’t know 

what is going to be happening.” 

Zervos was the top-polling candidate 

in the Coastal subdivision this 

year with 4295 votes. 

The top of her to-do list also 

includes repairing infrastructure, 

coastal hazards and the stormwater 

system. 

She said the New Brighton community 

has been waiting 11 years 

for some earthquake-related work 

to start. 

“We received $2 million funding 

for the community-led developments 

from the Christchurch Earthquake 

Appeal Trust, but that money 

could have been used for some of 

the roads, repairing the broken ones 

and our stormwater.” 

With the Linwood Ward joining 

Coastal-Burwood to form one 

community board, Zervos said 

negotiations with other board 

members will be vital. “I’m hoping 

that we can leave politics out of the 

equation and do what’s best for our 

community.” 

Donovan agreed with Zervos that 

there is a lot of work to be done. 

Said Donovan: “I’ll work hard to 

make progress to fix and upgrade 

our basic infrastructure, including 

fixing roads and footpaths, 

completion of estuary edge repairs, 

and progress on Pages Rd bridge 

and New Brighton mall,” she said. 

Donovan said she will also 

continue to advocate 

for investment in 

community spaces, 

council parks and 

recreational facilities.

providing a strong voice at the 

council table are some of Donovan’s 

top priorities. She also wants to 

ensure each area in the ward has 

strong representation. 

“I’ll be working with each of 

those communities so they can feel 

like they have input into council’s 

decisions. It’s important that each 

community feels like they’re being 

heard and they’re being supported. 

What issues facing the community 

in Brooklands might be different to 

those in New Brighton.” 

Donovan received 443 votes more 

than rival Kim Money, who was 

the Coastal-Burwood Community 

Board chair from 2016-19.

Barber polled a distant fifth 

behind independent Celeste 

Donovan, who won the byelection 

with 1507 votes. 

He departed Labour to stand 

as an independent for Burwood 

Ward, and was endorsed 

by the sitting councillor Phil 

Mauger, who successfully ran 

for mayor. 

“I thought long and hard 

about that. I don’t think there’s 

a place for party politics in 

local government. We need to 

work what’s best for the city. 

“If we work together we can 

do things in a positive way. But 

if we fight against each other, 

it’s much harder to achieve the 

outcomes.” 

Barber said he will shine 

a light on the works of local 

agencies and community to 

other councillors.

Tennis club prepares for centenary 

One hundred years on, 

the North Beach Tennis 

Club is still serving it 

up. On October 29 and 

30, the club will be in 

celebration mode for 

its centenary weekend. 

Committee member 

John Henderson looks 

back on the club’s 

history 

ESTABLISHED IN 1922, the 

club was originally called the 

Bowker Tennis Club through 

the generous gifting of the land 

in Palmers Rd, by local farmer, 

Henry Bowker. 

By 1930 the club opened the 

original tennis pavilion for its 

members which lasted for 74 

years. It was replaced by the current 

pavillion in 2004. 

Said life member, Janet 

Laverack: “Both pavilions are 

a reflection of the dedicated 

volunteers who worked tirelessly 

to raise funds to build these 

assets for the members to 

enjoy.” 

Janet has belonged to the club 

for 37 years. 

Although the club suffered set 

backs after the 2010 and 2011 

Canterbury earthquakes, it soon 

bounced back. 

By 2013, the four courts were 

fully reconstructed with a modern 

decoturf surface and the club

was back in action. 

The North Beach Tennis Club 

continues on strongly today, 

attracting new and retaining 

existing players. 

The club is keen to attract 

children to tennis as a sport that 

can last a lifetime. 

Not only does tennis develop 

physical and mental skills, it also 

provides a sense of community 

when belonging to a club.

led by coach, Di Hubrick and 

assisted by Garrath Glass on 

Saturday mornings, with 

seniors playing in the afternoon. 

Midweek tennis is always popular. 

Said long-serving president 

Derek Purver: “The club prides 

itself on its friendly, fun approach 

to tennis.” 

“The fine facilities we enjoy is 

only because of the voluntary 

work of many over many years 

to keep the pavilion in top condition. 

“In particular, I want to give 

special mention to the efforts 

of two of our longest serving 

members. Peter Thorpe, the 

club’s patron and Ethna Rouse, 

past president, are both life 

members. Both have been 

actively involved with the club 

for many years.” 

The 100 year celebration 

weekend includes events for 

junior and senior players. A 

tournament on Saturday will 

be followed by a luncheon on 

Sunday. 

It is expected there will be 

many stories, photos and memories 

shared, and as Purver said: 

“Maybe over a beer or wine or 

two.”

Artwork reflects healing process 


A YOUNG artist is healing his 

emotion and childhood pain 

through art. 

“Expressive” and “bright” are 

how 17-year-old Jake Kahurangi 

described his 11 artworks, which 

are on display at The Bridge Hub 

South Brighton. 

The New Brighton resident 

said he paints with oils because 

it makes him work with his 

mistakes. 

“It’s difficult to paint over oils 

once you have applied them.” 

Depending on his creative 

flows, the artwork took from two 

days to three weeks to finish. 

Sometimes, the flow would come 

to Jake as soon as he added more 

colours on the canvas. 

Jake started painting almost 

two years ago as a way to 

distract himself from the 

thoughts of using and needing 

substances. 

“We did drugs first for the fun 

and enjoyable experiment, but 

the problem was it then spiralled 

into something else,” he recalled. 

It didn’t take him long before 

he realised they were using 

substances to numb their 

problems. 

Said Jake: “I got used a lot by 

those people because I really 

do care. It’s easy because I care 

about people deeply. 

“If all of your friends do drugs, 

you don’t really have any friends. 

It’s just everyone using everyone 

for the money and for the high. 

That’s all they care about, not 

you.” 

He later managed to quit all of 

the substances within four weeks 

thanks to his mentor and best 

friend Jonny Bear. 

“I learnt from all of my darkness. 

I figured out where they 

came from and I see them as a 

teaching rather than something I 

should run away from. It’s making 

me stronger,” Jake said. 

The young artist also hoped 

to deliver a message that anyone 

can do art through his exhibition. 

“I thought I was bad at painting 

and art stuff, but I really 

enjoy it after giving it a go.” 

The exhibition Healing 

Through Art will run until the 

end of this month.
