FROM THE MANAGER
IAN EVATT
OF COURSE THERE IS A SENSE OF DISAPPOINTMENT THAT OUR LAST TWO GAMES - BOTH AWAY FROM
HOME - DIDN’T YIELD A SINGLE POINT. WE CONTINUE TO SET HIGH STANDARDS AND AS SUCH BOTH
DEFEATS HURT DEEPLY. WE COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND YOUR FRUSTRATIONS TOO, ESPECIALLY WITH
THE OUTSTANDING BACKING WE RECEIVED FOR WHAT WERE BOTH LONG JOURNEYS.
We have to take our medicine,
we have to understand that this
last week has not been good
enough, but it does not mean all
the hard and good work that we
have done so far has not gone to
waste.
It just means that with football you
have to stay calm in the good times
and in the bad, not get too high or
too low when those times hit you,
and that will always happen in a
football season.
It ebbs and flows and we just have
to stay motivated, stay confident
and give our fans something
to sing about and shout about,
because they have all been brilliant
with us and they deserved better
than last Tuesday and Saturday at
the New Lawn.
But we must not let those defeats
mask the fine start, in what is a
very competitive League One, that
we’ve achieved.
We are still only 12 games into
campaign, sit inseventh and there
are 34 games remaining. There is
so much to play for and we, as a
unit, will not let those two defeats
affect us adversely.
Mark my words, you will see
a response today here at the
University of Bolton Stadium,
where we have a record to be
proud of.
We have kept up the intensity in
training this past week and I know
the lads will respond in the right
way when we face a good side in
Barnsley.
A warm welcome to Michael
Duff, his staff and players and all
those who have crossed over the
Pennines from South Yorkshire.
Barnsley are just above us on
goal difference and, like us, have
had a good start to the season.
Having come down from the
Championship last season, they
will provide a stern challenge for
us and one that we are completely
up for.
Off the field, October has been
and continues to be a very
important month for several
campaigns Bolton Wanderers
Football Club are supporting.
Earlier in the week, it was
World Mental Health Day, which
allowed the Club, through Bolton
Wanderers in the Community,
to highlight the importance of
speaking to each other and to
try and break the stigma that
often prevents people from
speaking up. I know mental health
awareness is a matter that is very
close to Sharon and we, as the
Bolton Wanderers Family, want to
encourage everybody to look after
their own well-being as well as that
of their friends and family.
October is also Black History
Month and here at the Club we are
continuing to celebrate the impact
black footballers have made at
Bolton Wanderers throughout our
history. From Roger Walker, George
Oghani and Tony Cunningham to
Ricardo Gardner, Jay Jay Okocha,
Fabrice Muamba, and players in
our current squad, to name just
a handful, black footballers have
helped to make and continue to
make this football club what it is
today.
This month we are also showing
our support for members of the
LGBTQ+ community by taking
part in Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces
campaign. There is no place in
football for homophobia and we
want to ensure that the University
of Bolton Stadium is a welcoming
environment for everyone.
Enjoy the game and thanks, as
ever, for your support.
Ian.
THE BOARDROOM
NEIL HART
GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME BACK
TO THE UNIVERSITY OF BOLTON STADIUM.
We were delighted to be able to
announce some major news for
the stadium just over a week ago
with confirmation that we will be
hosting two P!NK concerts next
summer.
The dates – on 7 and 8 June, 2023
– will kick off P!NK’s European Tour,
with Wanderers just one of four
venues the star will perform at in
the UK.
That is a major coup for the club as
we look forward to again hosting a
genuine world star.
Importantly, after a gap of a few
years since the last major concert
here and following previous shows
from the likes of Oasis, Coldplay
and Little Mix, it also demonstrates
that we are firmly back in business
as a major player capable of
staging huge events in world-class
facilities for both artists and fans.
We hope to welcome a capacity
crowd of 36,000 for each night.
Tickets are now on sale via our
own club website and we will look
forward to welcoming many of you
to the concerts next summer.
Football is our key business and
remains our primary focus.
But it’s crucial that we grow the rest
of the business at both the Football
Club and the Bolton Stadium Hotel
to try and make BWFC sustainable,
while supporting the manager in
his plans to keep moving the team
forward.
To that end, we are also hosting
two more major sporting events in
the coming weeks as we also show
ourselves to be a world-leading
sporting venue.
Next Saturday, England will be
playing France here in the Rugby
League World Cup (KO 5pm).
We have worked closely with
Bolton Council and the RLWC team
to be one of the host towns in
putting Bolton firmly on the map.
A big crowd is guaranteed for
what is a vital game in Group B of
the competition but some tickets
are still available via the Rugby
League World Cup website for
anyone still wishing to come to
support England and be part of the
tournament.
At the end of the month, the
Premier Suite here at the stadium
is then the stage for one of the
highlights of the snooker calendar.
The Champion of Champions
tournament takes place between
Monday 31 October and Sunday 6
November when the game’s top
players will all be in action in front
of the ITV cameras.
All these events further raise
Bolton Wanderers’ profile, as well
as generating important revenue
for the club and we are proud to
be key partners in them all.
As mentioned earlier, the overall
purpose is to strengthen our
footballing capabilities and give
us the best chance of success on
the field.
Ian and his team are already
striving to deliver that and after
starting so well at home so far this
season will be looking to continue
that record with your backing this
afternoon.
In closing, I’d like to pay testament
to the collaborative approach we
have to the way we work at BWFC.
From our Chairman, Sharon
Brittan, Directors Nick Luckock and
Michael James, to the Manager,
Staff and Players, and all the offfield
team of staff who work so
hard every day for this club, to you
the fans. We are very much in this
together.
Thanks for your support and enjoy
the game!
A difficult week in Gloucestershire came to an end
for Wanderers with a narrow defeat at the hands of
Forest Green Rovers, just days after a defeat by the
same score line up the road at Cheltenham Town.
Wanderers were slow out of the traps and the home
side looked to take advantage of that. In a half of
few chances, the hosts took the lead just after the
half-hour mark through Connor Wickham who swept
home a Corey O’Keeffe cross from close range.
The second half chances mainly belonged to Ian
Evatt’s side, but despite Declan John, Dion Charles,
Jón Daði Böðvarsson, and Kieran Sadlier all going
close to scoring, it was to be a good day at the
office for Forest Green Rovers and a bad one for
Wanderers who slipped to back-to-back defeats in
the league for the first time since August.
THE SPINE OF THE TEAM
GOALKEEPER | BRADLEY COLLINS
AGE: 25 | PREVIOUS CLUB: CHELSEA
Coming through the youth ranks at Chelsea, the Southampton-born
stopper never made a first team appearance for the Blues and got his
first taste of action out on loan at Forest Green Rovers during the 2017/18
season.
Making 45 appearances for the Gloucestershire outfit, he then spent the
following season on loan at Burton Albion before a permanent switch
to Barnsley in June 2019. Playing 22 times for the Tykes during his
first season at Oakwell, he was then between the sticks the following
campaign as the club reached the Championship play-offs. To date, he
has made a total of 102 appearances for the South Yorkshire club.
CENTRE BACK | MADS ANDERSEN
AGE: 24 | PREVIOUS CLUB: HORSENS
An imposing figure at the heart of the defence, Andersen is now into his
fourth season at Barnsley following his June 2019 move from Danish side
Horsens and is the current club captain. Coming through the ranks with
Brøndby, his opportunity in the first team never came and after a loan spell
with Køge he signed for Horsens.
After a couple of years with the club, he moved to England to sign for
Barnsley, and he made his debut for the Tykes in a 1-0 victory against Fulham
on the opening day of the 2019/20 season. Continuing to be a regular under
Michael Duff’s management, he has made 14 appearances (1 goal) for the
club this term with his total standing at 138 appearances (4 goals).
CENTRE MIDFIELDER | JOSH BENSON
AGE: 22 | PREVIOUS CLUB: BURNLEY
Spending ten years in the academy setup at Arsenal, the Brentwood-born
midfielder was released in 2018 and subsequently signed for Burnley’s
U23s – a side then managed by Michael Duff. He had to wait patiently for
appearances in the first team, and during the second half of the 2019/20
season he had a loan stint in League Two with Grimsby Town.
Scoring twice in 11 appearances for the Mariners, he returned to Burnley and
made his first team debut in a League Cup clash against Sheffield United in
September 2020. After making 12 appearances for the Clarets, Benson opted
for pastures new and signed for Barnsley in a permanent switch in July 2021.
To date for the Tykes, the midfielder has made 40 appearances (4 goals).
STRIKER | DEVANTE COLE
AGE: 27 | PREVIOUS CLUB: MOTHERWELL
The son of former Manchester United and Newcastle United frontman Andy Cole,
Devante returned to Barnsley in June 2021 having had a loan spell with the club during
the 2014/15 season. Coming through the ranks at Manchester City, he had loan stints
with Barnsley and MK Dons before a permanent switch to Bradford City in August 2015.
His spell at Valley Parade lasted only until a January 2016 move to Fleetwood Town.
Spending two years at Highbury, Cole scored 22 goals in 94 appearances before
a move to Wigan Athletic. Spells with Burton Albion (loan), Motherwell (loan) and
Doncaster Rovers followed before a return to Motherwell in October 2020. 12 goals in
31 appearances earned him a move to Barnsley in June 2021 and since the move, he
has made 41 appearances (6 goals).
THE BOSS…
Appointed as Manager of Barnsley following the club’s relegation
from the Championship at the end of last term, Duff arrived at Oakwell
having spent the previous four seasons in charge at Cheltenham Town
– a club with whom he spent eight years as a player between 1996
and 2004.
Born in Belfast and capped 24 times by Northern Ireland, the central
defender who grew up in North Yorkshire spent time in the youth setup
at Darlington before his move to Gloucestershire. Making well over 300
appearances for the Robins, he moved to Burnley in 2004 and would go
onto help the club into the Premier League on two occasions.
Playing his final game for the Clarets and the final game of his career in
May 2016, Duff went into management with Cheltenham in September
2018 and helped the club to the League Two title in 2020/21 and a
subsequent return to the third tier after a 12-year absence.
MARLAND’S
MUSINGS
WANDERERS
MATTERS WITH
CLUB HISTORIAN
SIMON MARLAND…
INTERNATIONAL DOUBLE
The Wanderers international
stable continues to increase and
it was interesting to see Dion
Charles and Conor Bradley both
lining up for Northern Ireland’s 2-1
Nations Cup victory over Kosovo
in Belfast.
Down the years there have been
a number of occasions when the
club have had two representatives
in an international line up. The first
was in pre-league days in March
1884 when Jack Powell and John
Vaughan represented Wales.
We have to go back to 1959 to
find the last ‘double’ for the club
to represent England. Then it
was Eddie Hopkinson and Doug
Holden (Pictured) who were in the
same line up on no less than five
occasions.
More recently the club have had
double representation with Iceland,
Israel, Jamaica, Scotland and
Senegal but in 1994 three players,
Keith Branagan, Owen Coyle and
Jason McAteer all appeared for
Ireland in a 2-0 B international
defeat to England at Anfield.
DON’T LEAVE EARLY.
There’s something about the
Wanderers visits to Cheltenham
that produces a late show. In all
four of our visits to Whaddon
Road there has been late goals
that on three of those occasions
have proved decisive.
In November 2016 the Wanderers
conceded a 91st minute penalty,
converted by Amari Morgan-
Smith, to make a group stage exit
from the Checkatrade Trophy.
December 2020 saw another
91st minute winner, this time in
Wanderers favour, Ryan Delaney
securing three League Two points.
That game was played in front of a
crowd of 1,685, being only one of
two games that season in front of
supporters that season, the other
coming at Carlisle on Boxing Day.
In April 2022 Aaron Ramsey netted
an 89th minute consolation for
Cheltenham as Bolton won 2-1
thanks to earlier goals from Kieran
Sadlier and a Amadou Bakayoko
penalty.
Eleven days ago an 87th minute
goal from Ryan Broom won the
game for the Robins when the first
goalless draw between the sides
seemed to be on the cards.
Ryan Delaney scores Bolton’s 91st minute winner in December 2020.
#19 JAMES
TRAFFORD
20 | The Wanderer 01204 328 888
AN ENGLAND U21 INTERNATIONAL, A NEW CONTRACT SIGNED
WITH THE PREMIER LEAGUE CHAMPIONS AND A REGULAR
STARTING SPOT WITH WANDERERS, JAMES TRAFFORD
LOOKS TO HAVE THE WORLD IN HIS HANDS.
But ask his pals who will be here
watching him this afternoon and
Trafford is just the same lad they
knocked about with at home in
Cumbria, who just happens to
have gone on to land a pretty
decent job.
“The boys are coming; Aidan,
Beau, Dobbo, Joe, and Ballboy,”
said Trafford.
“They are the lads I grew up with
at school. I moved at the end
of Year Seven to (Manchester)
City but still kept in touch and
whenever I went home at the
weekend I saw them and played
Play Station, which I still do now.
“They are coming down for my
birthday and then we’ll go out for
food afterwards.
“They’re my mates I had when I
was at Carlisle and they will be
my mates forever. I speak to them
every day and they’re really funny.
“I’m just Traff to them. They just
see me as the same and I haven’t
changed.”
Trafford, who grew up on a
farm between Workington and
Cockermouth, and his friends – a
mixture of electricians, a project
manager, farmer and another
‘between jobs’ – will be heading
out to mark (and hopefully
celebrate) his 20th birthday.
Remarkably, Trafford only left his
teens last Monday, which seems
unthinkable given his stature and
presence between the posts for
Wanderers.
Joining City’s Academy at the age
of 12 has been a good grounding,
though, and the champions’ faith in
him forging a long-term career was
backed up by the award of a fiveyear
contract in the summer.
“People say it’s security, signing a
contract for that many years. I don’t
really see it like that. For me it was
just my contract was up and I was
going to sign another one,” said
Trafford in the unflappable manner
he also attaches to his recent
promotion to England’s U21 ranks.
“I had been involved in most of
the age groups. I always thought I
would play for them one day and
I’m just doing what I know I can do.
“But I’m still very proud of it,
representing my country and
singing the anthem.”
Trafford’s U21 debut came against
Kosovo in June before helping
England beat Germany last month
between Wanderers’ fixtures.
THE STADIUM
AND THE
PITCH IS
BRILLIANT AND
THE FANS ARE
REALLY GOOD.
IT’S BACK
TO WHAT WE
KNOW.
Trafford then picked up where he
left off at club level with a third
successive clean for the Whites
in their last home game against
Lincoln City a fortnight ago.
And despite a couple of 1-0
defeats on the road since, he and
his team-mates still boast the best
defensive record in League One
as they prepare to face Barnsley
today in pursuit of a sixth win in
seven home games and a place
back inside the top six.
“We’ve done well as a unit, I’ve
made a few good saves, the team
has made good blocks,” Trafford
added.
“We had a bad week but it
happens in football and to lose
two games is what it is.
“The two defeats were against two
teams where we were favourites
to win. But they’re still tough
places to go and teams don’t find
it easy.
“We’re still level on points with
sixth place and we’ve had had a
good start, on the whole.
“It’s two losses and in this
league on any day anyone can
beat anyone. There are still
30-something games to go.
There’s nothing really to worry
about.
“We need to do better away but
it’s really good for us playing at
home. The stadium and the pitch
is brilliant and the fans are really
good. It’s back to what we know.”
Trafford certainly feels at home
around the place since his arrival
from City last January.
The young keeper immediately
set a new club record of four
successive clean sheets in
his first four appearances
and was one of the
catalysts behind
Wanderers’ impressive
end to last season.
The chance to return
on a season-long
loan was therefore
an obvious and
appealing one to
take for club and
player as Trafford
aims to keep both on an
upward trajectory as a
player fully committed
to the cause.
“I always wanted to come back.
I just wanted to play games.
Because I’m so young and playing
at a really good level, I just
wanted to keep playing and come
somewhere I knew I was going to
play. And this was the best fit for
everyone,” he said.
“I came back excited because
I know all the lads so well and I
have great relationships with
them.
“I saw a lot of them over the
summer in my time off and I
was really looking forward
to it; just to keep going
with all the lads.
“Me and Con (Connor
Bradley) and all the
loan lads are fully
invested in the club.
We want the best for
the club and to try and
play as well as we can for
ourselves, which will help
the team, so it’s a win-win.”
Let’s hope that’s the case
again this afternoon to
make it a happy birthday
for Traff.
In a unique link with Bolton Clive
Anthony Sullivan MBE, (9 April
1943 – 8 October 1985), was
a Welsh rugby league player.
As a Great Britain and Wales
both Hull F.C. and Hull Kingston
Rovers in his career, and also
for Oldham and Doncaster.
Captaining Great Britain in 1972,
he was the first black captain for
Great Britain in any sport. He was
part of the Great Britain team which
won the 1972 Rugby League World
Cup. The link is that he was uncle
to Nathen Blake who played for
Bolton Wanderers 1995—1998
making 107 appearances and
scoring 48 goals and in 1996-97
season notched up 19 league
goals to fire Bolton back to the top
flight as champions. This talented
family played a special part in our
OCTOBER IS BLACK HISTORY MONTH AND GIVEN THE ISSUES WE CONTINUE TO FACE WITHIN
SOCIETY AND SPORT AROUND RACISM IT IS VERY IMPORTANT WE MARK THIS MONTH IN
SIGNIFICANT WAYS. THIS MONTH GIVES US THE OPPORTUNITY TO CELEBRATE THE RICHNESS
OF THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF BLACK PEOPLE IN SOCIETY AND HERE IN BOLTON.
Through the work we are carrying
out in Bolton Wanderers in the
are celebrating the contribution
of black people in our town.
The colours usually associated
with football are the colours of the
different teams which feature on
their shirts, however skin colour
also plays a large role in the game
and racism has sadly been a part
of football for many years.
Over the next few weekends
football is reminding everyone that
there is no room for racism and
clubs are committed to tackling
discrimination of every kind as well
as positively promoting equality,
diversity and inclusion.
That is why today we are also
promoting and supporting
the Rainbow Laces campaign
celebrating the diversity of
colour found in the rainbow
flag representing the LGBTQ+
community.
In our work in Bolton Wanderers
in the Community our work with
the LGBTQ+ Youth Club has won
both a regional and national award
and again you can read about this
work on the BWitC page in this
programme.
There is much to celebrate here
and we can find unity in diversity.
Let us remember we are One Club,
One Community, One Town.
Enjoy the game without
discrimination of any kind.
The Club’s initiative of seats for
a fiver paid off with the biggest
crowd at the Reebok since the
Premiership days of 24,249 on a
cold February night.
Grimsby, who were fighting
relegation, proved to be
gatecrashers, with the Wanderers
having to come from behind twice
to secure the draw, the third time in
five games that that they had to be
content with a draw against teams
in the bottom six.
Paul Groves gave the Mariners the
lead and it wasn’t until the second
half that Bolton got into gear. Gudni
Bergsson equalised on the hour
only for sloppy marking to allow
Zhang Enhua to head Grimsby
back in front.
Bo Hansen struck his fifth goal of
the season to level matters again
Nationwide League Division One
Bolton Wanderers 1
Sheffield United 1
Already confirmed in third place
and the play-offs, the Wanderers
gave some fringe players an
opportunity in the final League
game of the season against midtable
Sheffield United, with three
players making League debuts.
The game lacked a fierce
competitive edge but the referee,
Roy Pearson, saw fit to brandish
eight yellow cards and one red,
Frank Passi getting a second
yellow seven minutes from time.
By then, the Wanderers were
one down to Carl Asaba’s 52nd
minute goal, although Emanuele
Morini was denied his first senior
goal when his 20th minute volley
bounced down off the crossbar
and over the line.
Dean Holden (pictured) proved
to be the savior that saw Bolton
from ending the League campaign
on a losing note. Having suffered
a broken leg in the same fixture
14 months previous the young
defender headed the equaliser
to level matters, the Wanderers
made no mistake in the second
leg to put the Baggies to the
sword with goals from Gudni
Bergsson, Ricardo Gardner and
Michael Ricketts.
Twelve months after suffering the
crucial blow of seeing a promotion
dream shattered, dramatically and
controversially, at Ipswich Town,
the Wanderers secured a place in
the Play-off Final at Cardiff against
Preston North End.
Former Wanderers ‘keeper Russell
Hoult could do nothing to stop
Bergsson getting on to the end
of Simon Charlton’s free kick for
the opener after just ten minutes.
It wasn’t until the 63rd minute that
they had some breathing space
when Anthony Barness found
Gardner and the Jamaican netted
the second with a low drive.
The game was wrapped up in style
in the last minute when super sub
Michael Rickets powered through
the Albion defence to net his 23rd
goal of the season and set up a
play-off final against Preston North
End.
Team: Clarke, Barness, Bergsson,
BWFCST
WE ARE NOW A QUARTER WAY THROUGH THE SEASON AND MOST WOULD HAVE TAKEN
A TOP-SIX SPOT TWELVE GAMES IN. LET’S HOPE WE NOW PUT TWO DISAPPOINTING
AWAY PERFORMANCES BEHIND US AND GET BACK TO WINNING WAYS TODAY.
We are taking a break from
affiliate features today, so we
would like to bring you up to date
with some BWFCST activities
during recent weeks.
ACV Application Submitted –
we have submitted the Asset of
Community Value application
to Bolton Council and have
already received cross-party
political support. The process of
assessment is underway and we
will report any updates directly to
trust members as they arise.
Half-Season Tickets for Schools
– after discussions with the Club
prior to release of the half-season
tickets this week, we are pleased
to have collaborated on the
initiative to allocate a family ticket
to each and every primary school
in the Bolton area. More families
attending our home games will add
to the atmosphere and hopefully
means more young Whites fans
joining the cause!
Visitor from Norway – Glenn
visited us for the recent
Peterborough home game as the
last stop on his European bucketlist
trip. Glenn is a member of our
Bolton Wanderers Supporters
Club Norway affiliate group and
on his trip had the chance to
present Dapo with the BWSCN
‘21/’22 Player of the Year trophy.
Glenn has been diagnosed with
MND and Gethin Jones shared
some moments with him, which we
know he really appreciated. The
Trust were able to assist in making
the arrangements for Glenn’s
unforgettable visit and we send
him and his family and friends our
very best wishes.
Disabled Facilities Working
Group – after several meetings
with the Club and after the
recent Level Playing Field Audit
of disabled supporters’ facilities,
we are now setting up a working
group with members from the
Club and the Trust. This group
will look at how facilities can be
upgraded and to put into action the
necessary works involved. As part
of this process, the Trust is also
now a member of Level Playing
Field, which will allow us to access
the necessary specialist advice as
required.
WANDERERS NOTICEBOARD
A great big Happy 40th Birthday to
season ticket holder and lifelong
Wanderers fan, ADAM MARTIN!
In memory of
BARBARA LEES,
who loved and
supported her family
just as much as we
all love and support
Bolton.
She lived her life
with kindness and
compassion. Let’s all
follow in her footsteps
and play on.
Wanderers are delighted to welcome back DAVE VICKERS
for today’s game to formally mark his retirement and thank
him for his outstanding service to the club.
Lifelong fan Dave worked as the official tour guide for
Wanderers for 16 years – showing fans around the University
of Bolton Stadium and passionately sharing the Whites’ story.
He conducted the last of his tours at the age of 81 at the end
of last season and is guest of the club, along with son Craig,
at this afternoon’s game.
Dave’s love of Wanderers goes back 75 years after he
attended his first fixture at Burnden Park in 1945.
He was taken by his dad, Jack Vickers, who lived next door
to club legend Nat Lofthouse and also took Nat to his first
ever Wanderers’ game.
Dave’s support for Wanderers has stayed in the family,
watching games now with son Craig and grandchildren Jack,
Adam and Charlotte.
Thanks for everything Dave
Happy 67th
‘LOVE FOOTBALL. PROTECT THE GAME’
A message about anti-social and criminal behaviour
To mark the new season, we want to
make you aware of new measures
being taken across all of football
to ensure everyone can have a safe
and enjoyable experience. We are
supporting strong action from the
FA, Premier League and EFL to tackle
anti-social and criminal behaviours
that put all of us at risk.
This reflects the seriousness of
the risks to fans and staff – pyros
can burn at 2000 degrees Celsius
and cause lifechanging injuries,
while entering the pitch endangers
players, managers and match
officials.
We know those who commit these
illegal acts do not represent the
majority of supporters.
