Little River sisters
stand tall at World Cup
Sisters Alana and
Chelsea Bremner from
Little River are poised
to play big roles in the
Black Ferns’ bid to win
the Rugby World Cup.
Suzanne McFadden
from Newsroom
reports
THEY’RE BEST mates, who’ve
bought a house together,
and who lift each other’s
performances when they’re on
the rugby field alongside each
other.
And together, Alana and
Chelsea Bremner played crucial
roles in the win over Wales at
the weekend.
Lock Chelsea Bremner scored
the opening try in the 56-12
hammering which comfortably
delivered them into the Rugby
World Cup quarterfinals.
The victory also marked
Alana’s successful return to
the Black Ferns, having made a
remarkably quick recovery from
a torn knee ligament five weeks
ago to start strongly at blindside
flanker.
It wasn’t only their proud
parents – shearer Phil and
accountant Sharon – who were
thrilled with the performance of
their daughters.
While Black Ferns head
coach Wayne Smith thought the
Bremner sisters, playing at No.5
and No.6, were outstanding.
“Chelsea Bremner is getting
better and better. She only
started playing when she was
21,” Smith said of the former
premier netball player.
“I used to think she was a tall
gangly thing, but she’s got a lot
about her.”
“Alana… she’s a bit of a beast,
isn’t she? She’s a great carrier;
she’s tough.” (She made some
impressive breaks, advancing
the ball 48m during her 40 minutes
on the field).
“We’re lucky to have them.”
Alana, the younger sibling,
suffered a tear high in her right
MCL at the end of the Farah
Palmer Cup season, and has
undergone intense rehab with
the Black Ferns medical team
since they’ve been together in
Auckland.
Miniature city street on display
• By David Clarkson
CANTERBURY Museum’s early
Christchurch street will be stored
away for years while the museum’s
$205 million redevelopment goes on,
but the city’s talented model makers
have ensured that it can still be on
display – in miniature form.
THe work by the team of
miniaturists will go on display at
Labour Weekend for the first time,
as part of their national convention
which is being held in the city after
years of Covid delays.
It is a 12th-scale replica of the street
that has been a classic display at the
museum for many years.
The replica was the idea of modeller
Helen Goy, who passed the idea on
to other members including Jewel
Lewis – who immediately decided
on a modelling format from her own
childhood.
However, this museum ‘shoebox’
was on a much larger scale, involving
treasures from the past
the work of more than 20 miniaturists.
It is a part of the Our World in
Miniatures Exhibition, which will
be open to the public all Labour
Weekend, including displays from
model-makers who are gathering
in from all over the country at
Silhouette Studios, 6 Sheffield Cres,
Burnside, from 10am-4pm (Saturday-
Monday).
Entry is $5 for adults, and a gold
coin for children.
The Lyttelton School Picnic
A highlight of the school calendar, in 1915 the picnic was literally
Veteran steam tram back on track
• By Geoff Sloan
NEW ZEALAND’S oldest steampowered
tram – and one of only three
left in the world – is set to re-enter
service over Labour Weekend.
After an extensive five-year restoration,
The Tramway Historical Society’s
141-year-old Kitson steam-powered
tram is set to hit the tracks again at
Ferrymead Heritage Park.
The society’s project director Alex
Hunter said the steam tram was repaired
by some of its younger volunteers, who
were keen to see it going again.
“It’s lovely to drive, especially now
we’ve got a few less knocks and bangs in
it,” he said.
Kitson Steam Tram number 7, or
‘Kitty’ as she is affectionately known,
has had its boiler replaced and the bodywork
repaired and repainted.
The tram is the only survivor of eight
imported from the UK in 1881, and is
the only working example of three left
in the world.
In its past life, Kitty would haul trailers
behind it filled with Christchurch
picnic goers heading to Sumner Beach,
three times a day.
Hunter said it wouldn’t have been a
fast trip, as the steam-powered tram
trundles along at an average speed of
only 15kph.
The tram will be the star of the
Labour Weekend’s Extravaganza event
at Ferrymead Heritage Park.
Antarctic window hunt brings history
Lyttelton Historic
Museum Society
member and
‘Antarctican’ Peter
McCarthy reports on
a great initiative in
Lyttelton
DURING THE recent Days
of Ice festival local children
were asked to use their powers
of observation and hunt out
Antarctic-related items in the
windows of 16 Lyttelton shops
and businesses as part of the
Lyttelton Antarctic Window
Hunt.
It was aimed at five-to-15
-year-olds and organised by Te
Ūaka The Lyttelton Museum and
the Lyttelton Harbour Business
Association.
The concept for the window
hunt came from Ruth Targus,
a previous manager at the
Lyttelton Information Centre.
The Lyttelton Library and the
Information Centre supported
the window hunt by stocking
and collecting entry forms. Debbie
Fox from the library said “it
was a great idea with a lot of kids
taking part and who appeared to
enjoy the challenge”.
Margaret Bradshaw drew the
winning entry form. Bradshaw is
a local ‘Antarctican’ and was the
first woman to lead a deep field
WINDOW HUNT PRIZE: Margaret Bradshaw (right) drawing the winning entry from eight-year-old Duncan McLaughlin.
Duncan won a radio-controlled CAT 950M wheel loader.
party in the Antarctic. She had
first visited the continent in 1975
to collect specimens for a new
Antarctic Hall at the Canterbury
Museum, where she was curator
of geology.
The winning entry was from
Duncan McLaughlin, 8, of Rolleston,
who won a radio-controlled
CAT 950M wheel loader donated
by Terra Cat in Hornby, which
as New Zealand’s Caterpillar
dealer has been supplying and
servicing Caterpillar machinery
and the plant in Antarctica since
Hillary’s Trans Antarctic Expedition
in 1957.
International Antarctic Centre
family passes and soft toys were
donated as prizes by the centre’s
general manager David Kennedy,
while Dogs of the Vastness books
by Lyttelton author Ben Brown
were donated by the NZ Antarctic
Society (Canterbury branch).
Highlights of Days of Ice were
Te Radar’s Antarctica at the
Lyttelton Arts Factory where
there were two sell-out shows.
Te Radar delivered fast-paced
heroic-era history of penguin
botherers intertwined with gems
of flora and fauna, plus stories
of contemporary Antarctic
adventurers dragging sledges to
the South Pole.
Safe speed around schools
Way safer for everyone
We’re making it safer around schools and surrounding streets.
Whether you’re visiting whānau and friends, letting tamariki
walk, scoot or bike to school, or driving to work or home again,
you should be able to do it safely.
Lower speeds save lives and prevent serious injuries.
Regardless of the cause of a crash, speed is the difference
between someone being able to walk away relatively
unharmed or being seriously injured or killed.
When everyone travels a bit slower, people feel safer to use the
street and walk, scoot or bike to parks, schools and local shops.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency have changed the way speed
limits are set. This gives us an opportunity to implement an
area-wide approach for consistency, especially around schools.
Planned speed changes
We’re planning to lower speeds around schools to 30km/h
in Lyttelton, Governors Bay and Diamond Harbour.
Governors Bay and Diamond Harbour roads will remain at
50km/h until we look more closely into what the appropriate
speed is for these settlements (unless the road is outside
schools, in which case speeds will be reduced to 30km/h).
Find out more
Before we make changes towards making
the roads safer around schools and
easier to get around, we’re keen to hear
if there is anything we need to know.
For more information, to view the areas
and to tell us what you think visit
Information is also available at your
local council library.

After missing the Black Ferns’
opening victory over Australia,
her family weren’t sure when
they’d see her take the field at
this World Cup.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to bits
for Alana getting over her injury.
We thought she may not get to
play so soon,” Sharon Bremner
said.
“It just feels right they’re out
there playing together,” Phil
Bremner added. “They’re so
used to playing together for
Canterbury, Matatū and club, so
when one’s not out there it just
feels like something’s missing.
I think they get strength from
each other.”
The sisters embraced after
Chelsea powered over the line
from a pick and go to post the
Black Ferns’ first points on
Sunday, 17 minutes into another
slow start for the home side.
“To see her succeed makes me
so happy and vice versa,” Alana
said afterwards. “It’s not often
you get to play alongside your
sister in a home World Cup in
front of your friends and family.
But the Canterbury loosie
wasn’t so happy with a crucial
part of the Black Ferns forwards’
performance in the first half,
even though they were led 22-7
at the break. The Welsh, ranked
eighth in the world, threw
everything they had at the Black
Ferns, rattling them in lineouts,
scrums and driving mauls.
“We were doing some awesome
things around the field as
a pack, but our set piece wasn’t
good enough,” Alana Bremner
said of the first half against
Wales.
“It was cool to see the improvement
of that in the second
half - we started contesting their
lineouts and held it in there a bit
more in the scrums. That will be
something we’ll look to [improve
on] next week, because things
like that won’t be good enough
later in the tournament.
“It’s really disappointing, it’s
something we’ve been working
really hard on,” Bremner
said.
“We need to stay in the fight
which we weren’t doing. It’s
a mentality thing; at least we
know it’s a thing we can fix, we
can change during the week,”
she said of this weekend’s next
match, against Scotland.
Straight Up
by Ruby Tui
Ruby learned to rely on herself and her own strengths as a child, growing up without role
models, in an atmosphere of misery and shame. Her extended family did all they could but it
was sport that was the one constant in her childhood, and that pulled her through. Her sporting
talent helped her fit in as she was moved from school to school and community to community
throughout her childhood. From the age of about eleven, Ruby found herself in some very difficult
and dangerous situations and things could have turned out quite differently for her. Fortunately her
strength of character and resilience meant that she survived. Not only survived, Ruby managed
to make it to university. And it was there that she discovered her love of rugby. From there, her
stellar career in rugby took off, firstly in the Black Ferns Sevens team and now playing fifteens
for the Chiefs and the New Zealand team. Off the field Ruby is a regular commentator for SKY TV
and passionate about healthy environments for Kiwi kids and speaking up about mental health
within the sporting community. Impacting change through speaking out about public issues, and
providing motivation and gratitude to her peers is how she would like to leave her mark. Ruby is
Heartbreaking, sometimes hilarious stories of a junior
Diagnosis and death; uncertainty and urgent laxatives; sleep deprivation and synthetic drawstring
at Auckland’s Middlemore Hospital.
How can Izzy be a thorough and compassionate doctor while still leaving work before 7 p.m.?
How does she uphold dignity and autonomy for people whose liberty has been taken because
of severe mental illness? How will she know when what can be done for a critically ill patient is
different from what should be done? And is this floor clean enough for her to sleep on?
Izzy grapples with these questions and more as she rotates through psychiatry, orthopaedics,
medicine and surgery.
Thoughtful, funny and at times heartbreaking, Vital Signs invites readers to join Izzy through the
highs and lows of being an apprentice in the art and science of medicine. Get your scrubs on,
Charlie’s Good Tonight
by Paul Sexton
Featuring forewords from bandmates Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, this is the official and fully
authorised biography of the world’s most revered and celebrated drummer as it’s never been told
before. Mid-1962. The newly formed Rolling Stones are on the hunt for a permanent drummer.
Their sights are set on Charlie Watts, a jazz musician already well-known within London’s
rhythm and blues clubs. Fortunately for future Stones fans the world over, they persuade him to
take on the job. Once installed at the drum seat, Charlie would not miss a beat for the rest of his
life. He was there throughout the swinging sixties as the Stones reached superstardom and for
the well-documented debauchery of the 1970s, typified by the iconic album Exile on Main St.
Battling his own demons by the eighties, Charlie emerged unscathed, cementing his reputation
as the thoughtful, cultured but no less compelling counterpoint to his more raucous bandmates.
For almost 60 years – through all the band bust-ups, bereavements and changes in personnel
both on stage and off – Charlie remained the rock at the heart of the Rolling Stones. At the same
time, he was the antithesis of the rock-star archetype, an intensely private man who valued his
family above all else.
Russia Conundrum
How the West Fell for Putin’s Power Gambit - and How
to Fix It by Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Martin Sixsmith
Mikhail Khodorkovsky has seen behind the mask of Vladimir Putin. Once an oil tycoon and the
richest man in Russia, Khodorkovsky spoke out against the corruption of Putin’s regime - and
was punished by the Kremlin, stripped of his entire wealth and jailed for over ten years.
Now freed, working as a pro-democracy campaigner in enforced exile, Khodorkovsky brings us
the insider’s battle to save his country’s soul. Offering an urgent analysis of what has gone wrong
with Putin, The Russia Conundrum maps the country’s rise and fall against Khodorkovsky’s own
journey, from Soviet youth to international oil executive, powerful insider to political dissident, and
now a high-profile voice seeking to reconcile East and West.
With unparalleled insight, written with Sunday Times bestselling author Martin Sixsmith, The
Russia Conundrum exposes the desires and damning truths of Putin’s Russia, and provides an
answer to the West on how it must challenge the Kremlin - in order to pave the way for a better
future.
HISTORIC: Last
HAVE A look in your garage,
cupboard or anywhere else you
might have stored that old and
probably forgotten photo.
Because it could be a
competition winner.
Last year, Tai Tapu resident
Lynda Sadler found a photo
taken at Lancaster Park in 1899
in her garage, developed by her
father from a glass plate.
The image ‘Balloonist in
Lancaster Park’ was taken just
weeks before the turn of the
century, during a parachute
display by famous daredevil
Captain Charles Lorraine.
Hours after the photograph
was taken the parachute came
apart from the balloon and
was blown out to sea. Tragically
Captain Lorraine drowned.
The image won the
Christchurch City Libraries Photo
Hunt annual competition, which
is under way again this year.
City council head of libraries
and information Carolyn
Robertson said the image was
chosen as last year’s winner
because of its connection to
social history and the incredible
detail in the image, especially as
those watching the balloon who
were unaware they were being
photographed.
“The hope is that this image
will inspire people to take a
look in their garage, or back
cupboards to find their old
photos,” she said.
• The competition is open
until October 31 as part of
the Christchurch Heritage
Festival.
Chamberlain’s ton steers the way again
HARRY Chamberlain’s second
consecutive match-winning
century on Saturday has
given him and his Leeston-
Southbridge team a dream
start to the new country cricket
season.
In a Canterbury Country premier
one day competition clash
of the titans at Darfield Domain,
Chamberlain’s innings of 101 not
out, off just 83 balls, steered his
team to a tense two-wicket win
over rivals Darfield.
There were also victories for
Weedons, Cheviot, and Sefton
in round two in what is shaping
up to be a quality, hard-fought
season.
Leeston-Southbridge won the
toss and elected to bowl first – a
decision they were soon ruing
when Canterbury representatives
Zak Foulkes (89 off 108) and
Henry Shipley (37 off 40) were
cruising against the balanced,
disciplined bowling unit.
Darfield finished their 45 overs
on 211/7, confident that they
could defend the total on their
home patch.
And they soon had Leeston-Southbridge
reeling at 89/6,
before Chamberlain, hot off
an unbeaten century the week
before, teamed up with Dougald
Munro (30 off 37) for an ultimately
match-winning 99-run
seventh-wicket partnership.
win against Darfield earlier this year.
PHOTO: KAREN CASEY
There were still some tense
moments before the winning
runs were knocked off in the
40th over, however, with just two
wickets to spare.
Sefton secured their second big
win in as many matches with a
93-run win over Peninsula-Harbour
in spite of their top order
failing to fire.
Batting first, at 49/4, it was
seasoned campaigner Matt
Laffey who came to the rescue,
caressing 85 runs off 113 balls to
help lift Sefton to 217. Akhil Pant
and David Neal claimed three
wickets apiece.
Micah Campbell was destroyer-in-chief
for Sefton, taking
the new ball and knocking off
the combined side’s top order.
Campbell finished with matchbest
figures of 4/15, as the competition
newcomers struggled
with the bat for the second week
in a row, falling to be all out in
the 30th over for 124.
At Southbrook Park, on a
deceptively dicy-looking pitch,
Cheviot elected to bowl first
against the combined home side
representing Oxford-Rangiora-Southbrook.
It was only the typically-dogged
innings of opener
Calvin Scott who showed any
resistance against the Magpies
attack, with Scott carrying his
bat for an unbeaten 42 off 99
balls.
No other batsman was able to
hang around with him and they
were rolled for just 103 in 38.3
overs, with the three Fitzpatrick
brothers, Tom, Johnny and
Harry, sharing seven wickets
between them.
Cheviot opener Ryan Ellis
quickly showed how few
demons there were in the newlyrefurbished
’Brook pitch by
smashing an unbeaten 61 off just
33 balls to complete the ninewicket
thrashing in just 13 overs.
Ohoka suffered another
heavy loss, this time a sevenwicket
defeat to Weedons who
rolled them for 111 before
Blake Coburn almost singlehandedly
knocked off the runs
by smashing 72 off just 52 balls,
including four sixes.
Treasures from the Past:
Lyttelton School Picnic 1915
NEWS 11
THE ANNUAL Lyttelton School
picnics were much anticipated
occasions – a highlight of the
school year and an important
date in colonial Lyttelton’s social
calendar. Over the decades they
were held at a wide range of
locations including Riccarton,
Amberley, Kirwee, Quail Island,
Ashburton and Purau.
Occasionally postponed due
to war or epidemic, the picnic in
March 1915, in the early years of
WW1, was literally derailed by
a railway accident, although the
event did go ahead in spite of the
disruption.
A train, fully laden with
excited children and their
caregivers bound for Amberley
from Lyttelton, “came to grief”
at Addington Railway Station.
Travelling at 20 mph, the bogey
of the engine left the tracks at a
bend and threatened to topple
the entire line of carriages. (The
bogey is a flat chassis underneath
a railway vehicle body, with axles
and wheels attached through
bearings, to guide direction.)
The quick and brave actions of
driver Smith and fireman Wood
averted a potential disaster. By
staying on board and applying
the brakes at some risk to their
own safety, they managed to stop
the train, with just the bogey and
baggage van ending up on their
side.
Thankfully, the 13 passenger
carriages stayed upright on the
tracks. Smith and Wood sustained
a few knocks and bruises
and although the children were
shaken, none were injured. They
were transferred to another train
and continued on to the picnic
at Amberley.
Such was the widespread
gratitude for Mr Smith’s and
Mr Wood’s actions, on May 26,
1916 a ceremony of appreciation
was held in the school playground.
Highly regarded local,
Dr Upham spoke of the men’s
heroism, as did the headmaster
Mr Just. Both men were formally
presented with a silver tea service
by senior students Eunice Mazey
and Alice Russell, inscribed with
the following notation:
Iconic fun run back from city to surf
IT’S BACK TO the future for
Christchurch’s most notable fun
run.
The Les Mills City2Surf in
March will start in the central
city and wind its way to New
Brighton, finishing at Rawhiti
Domain.
It will be 50 years since the
first Les Mills City2Surf, which
has seen hundreds of thousands
of Cantabrians take part over the
decades.
Because of the damage the
February 22, 2011 earthquake
caused to the original route, the
event was switched from starting
at Pioneer Stadium to the finish
at Ferrymead Historic Park.
Star Media regional manager
Steve McCaughan said it was
fantastic the City2Surf was
returning to the central city out
to the coast.
“After all these years it’s great
to be going from city to surf
again,” he said.
Starting at Latimer Square
at 9am, the full 12km route
includes the Otakaro Loop and
Avonside Drive, continuing
along New Brighton Rd and
finishing at the City2Surf village
at Rawhiti Domain.
For those who want to take
part, but find the 12km distance
too long, the shorter, 6km
route starts at 10am at Avon
Park, opposite Porritt Park in
Avonside Drive, also finishing at
Rawhiti Domain.
In the early years, the event
started from Cathedral Square
and finished at New Brighton
beach. After four years it
finished at QEII Park, then in
2012, following the earthquakes,
the finish line changed to the
Ferrymead playing fields.
The event will mark the 50th
year since the inauguration of
the City2Surf in 1974, and it will
be the 48th running of the event.
McCaughan says the organisers
are hoping to see 15,000 people
taking part, making it the
biggest event to date.
The naming sponsor for the
2023 City2Surf is again the
Christchurch Les Mills fitness
club.
Club manager Tevita
Siulangapo, who describes
himself as “a born-and-bred
Christchurch boy” says he has
always viewed the City2Surf
event as an “integral part
of mobilising the people of
Otautahi”.
“So, having the opportunity to
support such an iconic gathering
through Les Mills makes me
incredibly proud,” he said.
While City2Surf is billed
as a fun run, participants can
complete the course by walking,
jogging or even pushing the
baby in a pram, however they
wish, though many do treat it as
a serious running event.
Groups of people can also
enter as a team, and can book a
team site at the finish line. On
reaching the finish, participants
are invited to spend time at the
new City2Surf village, with its
live music, warm-down exercises
and food stalls.
“We’re excited about the
new village and the festive
atmosphere it will create for
everybody so we encourage
them to stick around and enjoy
it,” McCaughan says.
There will also be a prize
pool. Every entry bib will have a
unique number giving everyone
the chance of their number
being drawn to win a prize.
• Entries opened Saturday,
October 15.
Fees: Adults (12+), $35;
children (five to 11), $20.
Both include bus fare to
the starting point and from
the finishing point. Children
under five enter free.
Entries can be purchased
online at the City2Surf
website or from advertised
outlets.
FUN RUN FACTS
• Since the start of City2Surf
the distance participants will
• And they will have burnt off
an estimated 188,730,000
calories.
• The City2Surf is also
a fundraiser. Since its
inauguration the event has
raised over $5 million in
benefits for local charities.
