Where the world meets
Welcome to the 15th edition
of ITB Asia. The trade show is
welcoming buyers, exhibitors,
speakers and convention
delegates from around the world
to ITB Asia, the largest travel
trade show on the continent. But
this 2022 edition is particularly
special. ITB Asia has returned
as a physical event after the
virtual formats of the Covid-19
pandemic.
Looking at the number of
companies and visitors who
registered for ITB Asia, it is
clear that this in-person edition
has been eagerly awaited.
Tourism is all about discovering
other cultures, other countries,
learning and meeting people,
and ITB Asia 2022 certainly
gives visitors this opportunity.
The show welcomes over 13,000
travel professionals from around
the world, who will fill the halls
and conference rooms of the
Sands Expo and Convention
Centre at Marina Bay Sands over
the next three days.
Once again, ITB Asia aims to
be the place where the world
meets, where all the different
stake holders discuss the
issues and trends of the travel
and tourism sector. This year's
conference programme reflects
the optimism of the industry.
The anchor theme is “Go Big
& Go Forward: Travel Industry
on the Road to Recovery and
Growth”. All the signs point to a
sharp bounce back of the travel
industry and experts at the
conference will help decipher
the main trends.
A big thank you to the show's
official partners who decided
to accompany the first Post-
Covid in-person edition of ITB
Asia. Also to the Saudi Tourism
Authority, the show's official
Official Partner Country, to
Berlin Brandenburg Airport, the
Official Partner Airport and to
Marina Bay Sands, the Official
Partner Hotel.
As part of the collaboration,
these key exhibitors occupy very
prominent booths at the show
and bring key outbound buyers
to ITB Asia. They are also taking
an active role, participating in
several sessions of the ITB Asia
Conference cycle
ADVERTORIAL
I NEWS I
Jordan: The "Kingdom of Time"
is at ITB Asia 2022
Jordan Tourism Board (JTB) is showcasing its "Kingdom of
Time" brand and its diverse and authentic tourism offering
at this year's ITB Asia
We spoke to Nayef Al Fayez, Minister of Tourism and
Antiquities of the Kingdom of Jordan, to find out the key
messages the destination is putting forward at this year's
show.
Why this slogan " Kingdom of
Time"?
Jordan has always been the
Kingdom of Time, home to more
than 100,000 archaeological,
religious and tourist sites. Think
of world-famous Petra, Dead Sea
and Wadi Rum. Jordan is indeed
the world’s largest open-air
museum, nurturing 10,000-year
old stories and experiences. As we
have been blessed with majestic
landscapes, we chose to focus on
intrepid travellers whose passion
falls in line with the products
we have to offer. But Jordan has
something for diverse types of
tourism, including history and
heritage, sightseeing, trekking,
adventure tourism, health tourism,
sky gazing, marine activities, film
tourism or faith tourism.
How would you describe Jordan
to travellers from around the
world?
Simply, it is the Kingdom of Time
and you need all the time in the
world to explore all of Jordan.
You name what interests you
and we have it: a dive in the
warm waters of the Red Sea, star
gazing in Wadi Rum or the Moon
Valley, bird watching in Aqaba,
a healing mud bath in the Dead
Sea, having an indigenous meal
with a Bedouin or a rural family,
walking along the breathtaking
Jordan Trail, shopping for handmade
mosaic artifacts in Madaba,
or having a dip in the holy waters
of the Baptism Site. We can have
the world coming to us, and we
guarantee wonderful memories
for everyone.
How is the tourism industry in
Jordan changing?
Tourism makes an important
contribution to the Jordanian
economy and there has been
large investment in major projects
such as Ayla & Saraya resorts in
Aqaba, luxury hotels in Amman
or wellness and eco-resorts
in Ajloun and the Dead Sea.
In recent years, niche tourism
products have started to emerge,
including faith, MICE or medical/
wellness.
Any highlights for the upcoming
year?
Tourism is Jordan's "petrol" as we
call it. The more we succeed in
increasing its contribution to GDP,
the better the chances are for the
country to recover and survive
the challenges that it encounters
individually or as a member of the
global community. Next year and
the years to follow, the Tourism
Ministry and JTB will become
a hive of activity, making sure
that no minute is wasted, as we
Nayef Al Fayez
Minister of Tourism and
Antiquities, Kingdom of Jordan
pursue the goals of the 2021-2025
National Tourism Strategy. We
will continue with the "Kingdom
of Time" campaign, adjust plans
according to global, regional
and local developments, and
carry out activities that would
strengthen our brand and offer
more incentives to attract more
tourists
JORDAN TOURISM
BOARD AT ITB ASIA
2022
Jordan Tourism Board is attending
ITB Asia 2022 together with six
key actors from Jordan’s travel
and tourism sector, targeting B2B
meetings with hosted buyers and
trade visitors in order to expand
business in Asia after two years of
disruption. And indeed recovery is
happening fast: Jordan has witnessed
an increase of 281.9% in visitors
from Asia during September 2022,
compared to the same month in
2021. The accumulative overnight
visitors to Jordan from Asia between
January and September 2022 was
118,565, compared to 31,517 visitors
in 2021. This increase amounted to
276.2%, which reflects the strong
recovery of tourism from Asia to
Jordan. The same was true for
overnight visitors to Jordan from all
nationalities which reached 3,128,099
over the same period compared to
1,292,067 visitors in 2021. This 142.1%
increase is a powerful prove that
the Kingdom's tourism industry has
bounced back.
CEO Messe Berlin
True to its mission: ITB Asia 2022 - the global
networking and business platform for the
tourism industry
ITB Asia 2022 is back as an in person event at the Sands Expo & Convention Centre,
after two years of virtual events. Martin Ecknig, CEO Messe Berlin, explains how this 2022
edition sets a benchmark for the travel industry in Asia
Beyond bringing the industry back together, ITB Asia 2022 will
provide a vision for the future of the global tourism industry.
How does it feel to be back in-person
at ITB Asia?
It is a pleasure to be back in Singapore,
among travel industry friends and
partners. As you are aware, it has
been two challenging years. Ever
since 2008, we have been welcoming
the industry to Singapore, so it is
about time that Asia’s leading travel
trade show, which is celebrating its
15th year, returns to the Sands Expo &
Convention Centre.
After having organised ITB Asia in a
purely digital format for the past two
years, I am delighted that we can offer
the Asian travel community a global
meet-up once again, so they can forge
new partnerships and strengthen
existing business relations with the
most important players in the region.
What sectors of the travel-value
chain are being highlighted at ITB
Asia this year?
The event features a wide range of
exhibiting companies from the Asia-
Pacific region, Europe, the Americas,
Africa, and the Middle East. Exhibitors
from every sector of the industry,
including destinations, airlines and
airports, hotels and resorts, theme
parks and attractions, inbound tour
operators, inbound DMCs, cruise lines,
spas, venues, other meeting facilities,
and travel technology companies are
attending the event.
Co-located with MICE Show Asia
and Travel Tech Asia, it covers the key
sectors of the travel industry, such
as Leisure, MICE, Corporate and
Travel Technology. With three
shows in one event, it has become
Asia's largest travel showcase.
What are the new features and
conferences taking place at ITB
Asia this year? Anything you are
looking forward to in particular?
ITB Asia Conference is the
leading knowledge hub for travel
executives looking to learn and
be inspired by the latest trends
and developments in the travel
industry. We have an exciting
programme of conferences and
keynotes for this year's show.
I am particularly looking forward
to seeing executives from Agoda,
Booking.com, Corporate Travel
Management (CTM), Expedia,
IHG Hotels & Resorts (IHG),
Marriott International, Saudi
Tourism Authority, Travelport and
many others to discuss, share and
debate their businesses over the
coming three days.
In your opinion, what are this
year’s hot topics for the travel
industry?
Thanks to the opening of borders
and the lifting of most travel
restrictions, tourism can take a
deep breath again. This is also
clearly having a positive impact
on global travel demand. There
is a strong and growing pentup
demand for travel, especially
in the Asia-Pacific region, where
restrictions have been the
strongest over the past two years.
The biggest question I see, is how
travel and MICE companies can
remain competitive and how they
can now quickly leverage and
maximise their growth potential
created by various trends in
certain industries. This is why "Go
Big & Go Forward: Travel Industry
on the Road to Recovery and
Growth" will be the overarching
theme of this year's conference.
Industry leaders and innovators
will discuss topics critical to the
future of MICE, corporate travel,
leisure travel and travel technology.
What is the importance of events
like ITB Asia for the industry?
In these challenging times, the
industry is dependent on business
meetings, exchanging expertise,
information and orientation. ITB
Asia is both highly relevant in
terms of content and remains
true to its mission of providing a
global networking and business
platform for the Asia-Pacific
tourism industry and, particularly
an important business outlook.
There is no other Asian trade
show where the entire tourism
value chain in the APAC region is
represented.
Why is Singapore the right venue
to hold this important meeting?
Thanks to its diversity, Singapore
is one of the most popular MICE
destinations in the world. The citystate
has an excellent infrastructure
for business events of all kinds.
The variety of MICE venues in
Singapore is simply impressive.
I am always happy to come here
and am also pleased about our
long-standing partnership with
the Singapore Tourism Board
(STB)
MARRIOTT
INTERNATIONAL
IN THE MARKET
Homes & Villas by Marriott International focuses on
curating best premium and luxury whole homes in
most sought-after destinations
Launched in May 2019, Homes & Villas by Marriott International has over 65,000 premium
and luxury whole home rentals located in over 700 destinations across the world
Present in six Asian countries, Homes & Villas recently added
some 350 home rentals in Australia and New Zealand. Chris
Stephenson, Vice President, Business Development and Account
Management, Homes and Villas by Marriott International looks at
doing more business in the region at ITB Asia.
What are the trends shaping the
premium and luxury whole home
rentals market?
People are looking for trusted home
rentals with high standards. Our
company is well positioned as we work
exclusively with select professional
property management companies
which deliver on the high product
and service standards that guests
expect of Marriott International in
design, cleanliness, safety, reliability
and high-end amenities.
We are also seeing more people
combining home rentals and
hotel stays in the same trip with
for example a city break followed
by a retreat in a drive-to destination
in the countryside. This kind of travel
behaviour fits perfectly with our
business.
Do you notice any changes in
booking behaviour and length of
stay at home rentals?
Our average booking window is
currently 85 days for YTD confirmed
bookings versus 75 days in 2021 and
49 in 2020 as people become more
optimistic and comfortable with
booking out. We have noticed that
people tend to stay at entire private
home rentals for a longer period of
time, blending work/school with
vacation through “leisure” travel.
People are increasingly looking for
more flexibility as it relates to their
travel plans.
What is Homes & Villas by Marriott
International presenting at ITB Asia
this year?
We want to highlight the uniqueness
of Homes and Villas by Marriott
International in the market by
showcasing a home-like environment
at ITB Asia, and showing the
benefits to those who are interested
in working with us. We focus on
curating the best premium and luxury
whole homes in the most soughtafter
destinations. HMCs listing
with us know they can benefit from
Marriott’s world-class reputation in
the hospitality industry built over
90 years. We believe this is what
differentiates HVMI versus other
open platforms. We are also the only
home rental platform to participate in
a robust travel programme – Marriott
Bonvoy – with all the benefits that
brings to both property management
companies and travellers.
You recently launched in Australia
and New Zealand. How is everything
going?
Demand is growing and we are
seeing bookings come from urban
cities to leisure destinations. The
number of reservations after our
launch announcement doubled. We
also see bookings coming from both
international and domestic travellers,
as more borders open worldwide.
How important is ITB Asia in your
strategy?
ITB Asia is a great forum to meet
new people, exchange insights and
generate ideas, which helps build a
better and bigger travel ecosystem
for everyone in the industry
This year, Taipei City figures amongst Lonely Planet's 'top
10 best cities to travel to in the world'. The destination is
back at this ITB Asia to present its recently enhanced
MICE offering, with the opening of Taipei Performing Arts
Center and Taipei Music Center.
Thanks to its cultural diversity,
proximity to nature experiences,
bustling food scene and toplevel
infrastructure, Taipei is
already one of Asia’s leading
MICE destinations. The addition
of two new venues gives MICE
organisers even more reasons to
choose the destination for their
next event.
The Taipei Performing Arts
Center and the Taipei Music
Center, opened in 2020, are
enhancing the city’s skyline with
their contemporary and futuristic
architecture. Both venues add
over 7,000 available seats to the
MICE offer in Taipei.
Comprising three theatres, the
Taipei Performing Arts Center
offers both indoor and outdoor
multi-purpose spaces. The
1,500 seat Grand Theater and
the 800 seat multiform theater
can be combined to become a
2,300 Super theater, equipped
with perfect facilities for large
conferences, meetings and
performances.
The Taipei Music Center is the
heart of Asia’s Mandarin pop
music industry. The 5,000 seat
Performance Hall connects the
Cultural Hall and the Creative
Hub, both dedicated to the
preservation and development of
music in Taiwan.
For Taipei City government, “the
ever before. With new venues
With international tourists returning to Monaco this year, the
Principality has outlined changes for its 2022 tourism strategy
and beyond.
According to Sandrine Camia,
Deputy Director of the Tourist and
Convention Authority, the strategy
is based on a new marketing
ecosystem, “Destination Marketing
and Management Organisation”,
which provides a structure for
tourism in the Principality, boosts
the destination’s reputation and
increases visitor appreciation.
Earlier this year, the Tourist and
Convention Authority unveiled its
upcoming promotional campaigns
for the destination: “For You ” for
the recreational tourism sector and
"REEVENT' for the business tourism
sector. The REEVENT campaign
relies on six visual slogans
which emphasise the values that
underpin Destination Monaco:
security, service, unity of place and
action, and commitment to the
environment. It has been rolled out
since 2021 with a particular focus
on MICE professional media in
Europe, the USA and now in Asia.
A special mention must be given to
sustainable tourism initiatives, an
area in which the Principality wants
to set an example. Monaco's leading
hotels and conference venues
have been championing a host
of environmental and sustainable
development initiatives. Some 88%
of hotel rooms have environmental
certification, and 97% have
signed up to an Energy Transition
Pact. The destination is also a
member of the Global Destination
Sustainability Index and achieved a
benchmark score of 70.1% in 2020,
an improvement of 13.24% on its
2018 result.
To further consolidate
environmental commitment,
Monaco released its White Paper
on Sustainable Tourism in Monaco.
The Paper looks at what has already
been achieved but also analysed
Monaco's strengths, weaknesses,
opportunities, and threats. The
White Paper has mobilised all of the
different stakeholders concerned.
The findings are now used to define
a Sustainable Tourism strategy that
ties in with the UN’s Sustainable
Development Goals and the
Principality’s Energy Transition
objectives. To learn more, make
Finnair
Finnair tweaks strategy while
keeping Asia in picture
Finnair has reviewed its strategy and reorientated itself
towards markets in South and Southeast Asia while increasing
frequencies to the United States. This was a strategic move
by the carrier following the closure of the Russian airspace
for EU airlines, explains Javier Roig, Director France and
Southern Europe of Finnair to ITB Asia News.
"We have to open another chapter."
After establishing its reputation as
a 'niche company‘ with the shortest
flights between Europe and Asia,
the challenging geopolitical
situation has forced Finnair to
completely rethink its model. "We
had to work on a new strategy that
takes into account the flight ban in
Russian airspace," explains Javier
Roig.
Finnair has therefore revised its
network and suspended the service
on secondary routes, in particular
to Japan and China. This includes
non-stop flights from Helsinki to
Fukuoka, Nagoya, Osaka-Kansai. In
China, Finnair used to serve seven
destinations, including Daxing,
Beijing new airport. With longer
flying times, Finnair decided to
concentrate on trunk routes.
“We are not giving up on Asia.
We are still flying to Hong Kong,
Guangzhou, Seoul, Shanghai and
Tokyo Haneda- which replaces our
flight to Narita. We are also focusing
more on South and Southeast Asia,
where we remain competitive
compared to other companies in
terms of frequencies and product.
We serve Delhi and Mumbai in
India as well as Bangkok, Phuket
and Singapore in the ASEAN. We
have put our Airbus A350-900
with the new business class and
the brand new Economy Premium
on Singapore. It will also arrive for
Bangkok in November ", says Javier
Roig.
The new business class and
premium economy were launched
earlier in 2022. According to Roig,
the whole fleet of long-haul aircrafts
will be equiped with the new cabins
by early 2024. "The new product
helped us get voted the Best Airline
in Northern Europe by air travellers
at the World Airline Awards by
Skytrax in 2022," highlights Roig.
Another new area of development
is the launch of routes to Doha in
partnership with Qatar Airways.
“Here too, it is a question of
maximizing the use of our fleet. We
will thus be offering three daily flights
in the A330 from Copenhagen,
Helsinki and Stockholm”, the
Director of Southern Europe adds.
In Doha, Asian travellers can
connect in Doha on Finnair flights
from all Asian destinations served
by the Qatari carrier.
With an expanding network in
the United States - in particular
the opening of Dallas, and aircraft
rentals to other airlines, Finnair
hopes to return to profit in 2023.
"It would be a good sign because
the company will celebrate its 100th
anniversary next year," tells Javier
Roig
ROBUST
RECOVERY
FOR ASIAN
AIRLINES
Preliminary traffic figures
for August released by the
Association of Asia Pacific
Airlines (AAPA) points
to a robust recovery in
international air passenger
markets as travel demand has
grown.
In August, Asian airlines
carried a combined 13.1
million international
passengers, representing
39% of pre-pandemic 2019
levels. Demand (in revenue
passenger kilometres*) grew
by 501.3%, while available seat
capacity was up by 174.5%
compared to August 2021.
As a result, the international
passenger load factor jumped
by 42.3 points to 77.9%.
For Subhas Menon, AAPA
Director General, "the lifting
of travel restrictions in Japan,
South Korea, Hong Kong
and Taiwan will hasten the
pace of the industry’s return
to health, while full recovery
is not expected until China is
also open."
An Ngo, Regional Vice President Eastern & Southeastern
Asia - Agency Distribution at Hahn Air explains the valueadd
its comprehensive ticketing services offer for travel
agents.
What are the ticketing services
Hahn Air is offering for travel
agencies?
Hahn Air has been offering
ticketing services to travel
agencies since 1999. By choosing
Hahn Air as the validating carrier,
they have access to airlines that
would normally not be available
for ticketing in their GDS (Global
Distribution System).
Hahn Air partners with over 350
airlines that seek to expand their
distribution reach. If an airline
is not in the local BSP (Billing
and Settlement Plan) or does
not grant ticketing authority in a
certain market, travel agents can
still issue the flights through our
services, which are strictly B2B.
Travel agents have access to more
routes, more destinations, more
airlines and more combinations
of airlines on one single HR-169
ticket. They can use the standard
processes of their GDS and, and
best of all, the service is absolutely
free.
How exactly does it work?
To issue a Hahn Air ticket, travel
agents do not need to leave their
GDS. All they need to do is go
through the standard ticketing
and payment processes and
simply choose Hahn Air (HR) as
the validating carrier. They will
then be able to use the familiar
GDS processes to issue a Hahn
Air HR-169 ticket. On the Hahn
Air website, we provide easy stepby-step
guides. For airlines that
are not in a GDS under their own
two-letter code, we make them
available in all major GDS. If they
are a partner airline of Hahn Air
Systems, they are available under
the code H1. If they are a partner
airline of Hahn Air Technologies,
they are available under the code
X1. Travel agents can simply then
select Hahn Air as the validating
carrier and issue a ticket.
How are Hahn Air's distribution
services enhancing the travel
agents’ business?
Hahn Air’s services create
additional ticketing opportunities
with more than 350 partner
airlines. More than 100,000 travel
agencies in 190 markets around
the world have access to our
services. Travel agencies can trust
in the quality of our partners and
can count on receiving support
with ticketing questions 24/7 via
our Service Desk. In addition,
we offer the free and automatic
insolvency protection Securtix.
Should any partner have to
cancel flights due to becoming
insolvent, we grant a ticket refund
for the passengers. This is adding
an extra layer of security and
reassurance for our travel agents
who can always book our partners
with confidence
New tourist attractions include:
A UNESCO designated world
turn it into a recognised highquality
Dubrovnik is Croatia's undisputed
in the country. But it is also a
destination of culture with many
festivals, prestigious art happenings,
major open-air events and, last but
"Respect the City" (RTC) is
a multidisciplinary strategic
of a set of short-term, mediumterm
Having recognised the need for
urgent and systematic action
based on sustainable development
where tourism is the primary source
of economic activity, launched the
is to reduce negative effects of
The conservation of cultural
as a destination for its visitors
– all of these are motivational
factors for this shift in destination
“As international borders reopen,
Australia is a natural key target
However, traveller expectations have
also evolved, with many looking for
unique and meaningful experiences.
The two new brands that we are
Gyeonggi-do offers incentive
for sustainable MICE events in
South Korea
Gyeonggi-do is back at ITB Asia 2022 to present its initiatives
to attract more green MICE events. Gyeonggi Tourism
Organisation thus offers financial benefits and expert advise
to transform an event into a sustainable experience.
As a part of its efforts toward
increased sustainability, Gyeonggi
Tourism Organization (GTO) has
launched its Green MICE initiative,
and offers up to 10% additional
funding for event organisers who
adopt green event practices. This
incentive scheme is designed to
heighten understanding about the
concept of Green MICE among
event organisers and get them
actively involved in the movement.
In this matter, GTO has developed a
“Green MICE Checklist” to facilitate
event organisers' transition toward
Green MICE. The 14 items on the
list fall into five categories, such
as reducing the use of disposable
items, adopting eco-friendly
materials, replacing paper with
digital alternatives, and opting for
public transportation. Each clause,
rated on three levels of difficulty in
terms of implementation, including
easy, intermediate, and difficult, is
designed to be easily applicable to
any type of event. Guidelines are
also provided for organisers who
are not familiar with Green MICE.
GTO has 17 Gyeonggi Unique
Venue partners who recognised
its sustainability efforts during an
assessment in 2022. Choosing
these venues, which can be
used for various types of events,
is particularly beneficial as GTO
offers extra points while it reviews
eligibility for the funding support
programme. In other words, the
events being hosted in any of
the 17 Gyeonggi Unique Venues
may have a higher possibility of a
subsidy from GTO.
In a further step towards achieving
carbon neutrality, GTO has
launched the “G-MICE Welcome
Shuttle bus” programme. Last year,
it saw a pilot campaign carried out to
encourage MICE event participants
to use public transportation
and provide shuttle buses for
some events. Following positive
feedback from participants, GTO
officially launched the programme
this year with new added initiatives
such as the introduction of ecofriendly
buses. GTO provides a
shuttle bus service between major
stations, event venues and hotels
for organisers who applied for the
programme.
Green MICE, by Gyeonggi and
Gyeonggi Tourism Organization,
aims to reduce the burden on
organisers and develop a more
positive perception of sustainability
for stakeholders, encouraging them
to get involved. In this way, GTO
aims to create an 'ECOnomical
business events environment'
hand in hand with organisers and
participants.
The South Korean province of
