Burlington in Prestons Rd has
just unveiled the jewel in the
crown of its luxury complex.
Dubbed ‘The Pavilion’, the imposing
two storey building sits in
the heart of the village and comprises
a restaurant, bar, indoor
pool, movie theatre, hair salon,
library, café, bakery, wellness
centre and gym. Alongside those
facilities are 42 one-and-twobedroom
serviced apartments
available in a range of sizes, up
to 100m2 (with a 30m2 deck or
balcony).
Managing director Simon
O’Dowd said The Pavilion is
inspired by iconic buildings such
as Raffles in Singapore and the
Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva.
“It’s important that our residents
have a vibrant hub where
they can spend time during the
day and evening, to socialise and
exercise,” he said.
“Sometimes they’ll just pop
in and relax in the library
with a book while they have a
cup of coffee or meet friends
for morning tea. At night, the
restaurant is in full swing and
we’re planning a variety of
regular evening entertainment.
The cabaret with Ali Harper that
opened The Pavilion was a huge
hit.”
Set on 15 hectares overlooking
three man-made lakes,
Burlington will have 214 houses
when the last stage is completed.
Apartments start at $394,000
and houses at $938,000, with a
range of serviced options.
O’Dowd said while some
people are looking to downsize,
others still want bigger homes.
In answer to that demand, Burlington
is launching a new 220sq
m house design featuring two
living areas, three bedrooms,
two-and-a-half bathrooms, and a
double garage.
“Everyone has different needs
and we’ve worked hard at Burlington
to make sure we can offer
a variety of options to suit what
people want. While many of our
residents are retired, some still
head out to work each day and
we have to make sure they’re
catered for with the likes of our
exercise classes and other activities
on offer.”
Together with the independent
living options, Burlington has a
care centre comprising 60 rest
home/hospital rooms, all with an
ensuite and outdoor living area,
and a boutique 20-room dementia
facility.

Iconic city street on display in miniature

CANTERBURY Museum’s
early Christchurch street will
be stored away for years while
the museum’s $205 million
redevelopment goes on, but the
city’s talented model makers
have ensured that it can still be
on display – in miniature form.
The work by the team of
miniaturists will go on display
at Labour Weekend for the first
time, as part of their national
convention which is being held
in Christchurch after years of
Covid delays.
It is a 12th-scale replica of
the street that has been a classic
display at the museum for many
years.
Work has now begun on moving
2.3 million taonga (treasures)
out of the museum, and the
downstairs galleries will begin
being closed from December.
The museum redevelopment project
is expected to take five years.
The Garden City Miniatures
Club modellers may approach
the museum to see if the newly
completed Christchurch street
model can be displayed in the
central city pop-up temporary
exhibition space, which is due to
open in 2023.

the idea on to other members
including Jewel Lewis – who
immediately decided on a

“I looked at the idea, and
decided, ‘This is a shoebox’,” said
Lewis.
The concept took her back to
the displays she used to make as
a child, setting up little scenes
inside a shoebox with holes
cut in the side and covered in
cellophane for viewing. Lewis
remembers this as being her first
venture into miniatures, a hobby
that has become a life-long passion.
However, this museum “shoebox”
was on a much larger scale,
involving the work of more than
20 miniaturists.
Members went to the museum
to take a lot of measurements
and then Bruce Coppard cut out
the framework inside which the
street now stands. Modellers
were assigned shops from the
museum street to remake in
miniature and other members
created the people who are in the
street, the penny-farthing cycle,
the horse, even birds.
Lewis says there has been a bit
of “poetic licence” to fit the shops
into the display, but the overall
effect is an extraordinary miniature
reproduction of a place
that is familiar to probably every
Christchurch
resident.
She sees it
as being interactive.

It is a part of the Our World
in Miniatures Exhibition which
will be open to the public all
Labour Weekend, including
displays from model-makers
who are gathering from all over
the country.
The display includes doll
houses, scenes, vehicles –
everything remade in miniature
by hobbyists who have been
delighted to see their pastime
displayed on national television
this year in the Great Big Tiny
Design Challenge series.

Monday, October 22-24,
at Silhouette Studios,
6 Sheffield Crescent,

each day. Entry is $5 for
adults, and a gold coin for
children. The event also
has 21 sales tables selling
everything needed for
this hobby.

Virtual walk brings back memories
of earlier Travis Wetland excursions
RYMAN Healthcare residents
taking part in the Walking for
Wellness event were excited the
Travis Wetland park provided
a historic backdrop for their
walking challenge.

fellow residents met at the start of
the walk at the Beach Rd car park,
colourfully dressed and pleased
with their progress on Ryman’s
Active Ageing event for 2022.
In New Zealand, Ryman
residents are using their steps
on pedometers and apps to add
to their progress on a virtual
walk along the Abel Tasman
Coastal Track over the 30 days in
October.
In Australia, residents are
virtually walking 60km of
the Mornington Peninsula
over the same timeframe.
Ryman Healthcare has villages
throughout New Zealand, and in
Victoria, Australia, and the walks
by 1,300 residents reflect this.
In Christchurch, there have
been a number of inter-village
walks, including at Bottle Lake,
Hagley Park, the Harry Ell Track
and Travis Wetland.

1990s. Both she and her husband
Ron (a member of the Fire
Service) did physical work on the
Travis Wetland walkway with
hundreds of other people over
many months.
Pukekos and paradise ducks
were out in support and the
surrounding wetland bush
looked stunning.
“I’m very amazed to see
how it (the wetlands area) has
progressed. It was quite a little
underwater swamp . . . It was
kind of just scrub and rough
tracks and everything was under
water. We’re delighted to see it
how it is now,” Penny said.
Penny is a melanoma survivor.
She regularly walked on
Tuesdays with a group of other
cancer survivors around Hagley
Park, finishing with a cup of
coffee at the Antigua Boat Shed
Café.
Alongside Penny was Shirley
Piper, another keen walker.
Shirley said she also took part
in the earlier Hagley Park
challenge, and with other
residents enjoyed a coffee
afterwards.
Ryman chief strategy officer
Mary-Anne Stone said the
positive feedback from residents
was continuing, with the virtual
walk about halfway through.
“It’s extraordinary how many
people are out there walking and
we’re hearing beautiful stories
about the difference it’s making
for them.”
Some residents are using
smartphones or smart watches
to track their virtual steps, while
others are using pedometers
supplied by Ryman.
A virtual awards ceremony
will be held on November 23 to
celebrate the winners.

The McMaster & Heap
family pets…..
So very pleased to introduce this little
guy….a 16 week old red Mandalay, who
we stumbled upon by accident. Number
four in the pet family. Undecided on name
as it has be unique and fitting for such
a clever, handsome boy.
Frontrunners are Romeo,
Claudius, Atticus, Titus or
just Charlie. He has slotted
into the McMasterHeap
family incredibly well,
introducing himself to both
dogs fearlessly and Maximus,
our big ginger DSH. He
is confident but sensible,
cuddly and gentle (he allows
the tummy rub), all in all
perfect for us. He’s already a
FB favourite.
I didn’t know much about
the Mandalay breed. It was
originally developed in NZL
in the 1970’s, a Burmese
mating to a Domestic Short
Haired cat.
Our Kittens lineage comes
from Australia in which
the initial cross was that
of a Burmese and a British
Shorthair. There were six
kittens in his litter and his dad
was a black Mandalay and his
mum a Burmese.
Next in the line up is our
overweight loveable
ginger cat Maximus. He
loves a good sleep, all
day in a sunny spot, at
night under the covers,
rarely seen patrolling the
section or working out.
Last week he was booked
in for a dental scale and
polish and full groom
out. He’s impossible to
attempt brushing his
teeth and he can’t eat
Prescription Diet Dental
dry due to being solely
on weight loss diet,
so regular dentistry is
required to keep his teeth and gums healthy.
He is primarily Dylan’s cat and sticks to Dylan
when he’s home. A loveable rogue who lives
the easy life.
Macy, our two and half year old Black
Labrador, is again “my dog”. Her keen
interests are sniffing out apples on our daily
walks, retrieving anything that is thrown,
swimming, and bodysurfing. She loves any
form of exercise and is so obedient she’s
walked off-leash everywhere. She hates
making a mistake. Most
days she’s seen either in
reception at McMaster
& Heap or pounding the
tracks and roads around
Hagley Park, several times
a day.
Our beautiful Lola turned
13 on 30th September.
She is nothing short of
an angel and adored by
most that know her. Again
a FB favourite. She’s in
great health considering
she is a kidney cancer
survivor. She can still
manage a good hour’s
walk everyday and a swim. She still
flies North on holiday with us and
is often seen consulting with me
in my consult room. She definitely
puts dogs at ease, calms the
anxious, fearful ones and socialises
with the puppies. She is the kindest
most gentle dog there is and we
are all better people having her in
our life.
I think four pets is a good
number to stop at for
now. We are very blessed
to have these precious
souls in our family.

Baby charity calls
out for donations

SOARING living
costs have driven a
“humongous” increase in
demand for baby supplies
at a charity.
It Takes A Village Hub
has put together more
than 500 bundles for
babies and toddlers in the
past six months.
At this rate, the charity
is on the way to hit the 800
mark “easily” by December.
Each baby and toddler
bundle contain essentials
– from a newborn child up
to five years old – including
clothing, bedding,
toiletries, toys and books.
However, included items
depend on stocks of donations.
The charity is struggling
to meet the demand for
consumable items like
toothbrushes and toothpaste,
nappies and wipes,
as they are one-off uses
and low in donation.
Co-director Danielle
Petterd said requests for
these items make up to 90
per cent of applications.
“An unexpected bill
could put families behind
for weeks. A bag of nappies
could cost up to $18
per week. So to be able
to put that money onto
power bills or pay off debts
are a huge things for our
families.”
The charity put together
more than 600 bundles
last year. Before the pandemic,
they used to do 20
bundles a month.
“(The) number of
families in need has
hugely increased since
Covid-19 and living costs
increased. It has just been
absolutely insane to see a
huge number of families
in need out there,” Petterd
said.
Latest figures in a new
ASB report show household
weekly living costs
are expected to increase
by $110 over the next 12
months, with two-thirds
of the cost from either
non-tradable goods/services
or debt servicing.
Petterd is urging people
to donate their baby clothing
so the charity can continue
to help struggling
families.
“Without donations like
these, we wouldn’t be able
to do what we do for the
families.”
The charity recently
cleared a wait list of
ten families in need of
newborn clothing. But
Petterd said people are still
coming through the door
asking for help.
The demand for baby
supplies also outgrew she
and co-director Jess Roberts’
garages.
Last year, with city
council help, they managed
to secure commercial
premises in New Brighton.
Petterd said in hindsight
it was funny to see how
they were able to fit all of
the items in their houses
for so long.
The charity was born in
2017 as a way to share baby
supplies and resources to
families that needed “a
little extra help”.

Safe speed

Way safer for everyone
We’re making it safer around all schools
and surrounding neighbourhoods.
Whether you’re visiting whānau and friends,
letting tamariki walk, scoot or bike to
school, or driving to work or home again,
you should be able to do it safely.
Lower speeds save lives and prevent
serious injuries. Regardless of the cause
of a crash, speed is the difference between
someone being able to walk away relatively
unharmed or being seriously injured
or killed.
Working towards safer speeds
When everyone travels a bit slower people feel safer to
use the street, and walk, scoot or bike to parks, schools
and local shops.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency have changed the
way speed limits are set. This gives us an opportunity
to implement an area-wide approach for consistency,
especially around schools.
Speeds also need to reflect the environment of the
street, and our neighbourhood roads support speeds
of 40km/h or lower.

We’re planning to reduce speeds from 50km/h to 30km/h around all schools and 40km/h in
neighbourhood streets, especially those around schools. We’ll start with areas shown on
the map, then roll out more streets over the next ten years as funding allows.

men of good standing in
the community over 18 and
offers personal development
training.
As an older member and
mentor, it is most rewarding
to watch young men be
initiated and to witness their
progress into confident wellrounded
members of society.
There is no age limit, which
is where the Pegasus Daylight
Lodge excels by extending the
masonic journey into twilight
years.
Freemasons are proud of
the community work they
do – for example, university
scholarships, Rescue Helicopter
Trust, Netball Canterbury,
women’s refuges, medical
research and many other
individuals and organisations.
Women are involved at a
social level and their support
is valued at the many events
held regularly.

for cheesemakers to
show off their wares
and share their love
of cheese, writes New

‘‘WE ALL end up with two or
three ‘go to’ products that we
know and love. However, for
New Zealand Cheese Month
this October, we’re encouraging
cheese lovers to branch out and
try a new New Zealand cheese.
‘‘Our industry is constantly
evolving and there are so many
new locally made cheeses
available. By challenging yourself
to try something new, there’s
a chance you’ll find a new
favourite New Zealand cheese.’’
As well as enjoyment, it can
make economic sense for New
Zealanders to buy local.
‘‘Buying locally made cheese
keeps jobs and money in our
country. It’s also supporting
our regions as many of the
cheesemakers and the farms that
support them are in rural areas.

reduces food miles.’’

To celebrate cheese month,
Whitestone in Oamaru has
released its Mt Domett double
cream in a 125g round.
Raspberry, pistachio and
chocolate baked brie
Serves 6-8
Ingredients
1 Whitestone Mt Domett
Double Cream Brie
1/4 cup fresh or frozen
raspberries
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup toasted pistachios,
roughly chopped
10g dark chocolate, shaved or
grated
Oat crackers to serve
Directions
Preheat your oven to 180degC
bake.
Using a sharp knife, cut the
rind off the top of the brie and
place it in a small cast iron
skillet, cut side up. Bake for
10 minutes or until the cheese
begins to melt.
Meanwhile, place the
raspberry, sugar and lemon juice
in a small saucepan over low
heat.
Bring to a simmer and cook for
five minutes, or until thickened.
Top the brie with the raspberry
compote, pistachios and
chocolate.
Serve and enjoy while hot with
oat crackers.
