We are excited to welcome you back to Weston Golf Club for GreenLight’s Annual Golf for Good!
We celebrate a significant milestone this year as our
portfolio organizations are reaching nearly 500,000
children, youth, and families annually! The solutions that our
portfolio organizations provide, offer profound life-altering
experiences for families and communities of color. None of
this is possible without you – friends, allies, and champions,
thank you!
During the past year, GreenLight Boston has once again
worked to identify our community’s most pressing needs, find
the best solutions our country has to offer, and cultivate their
growth in our community. We met with countless community
members and leaders to gain a deeper understanding of the
reality for too many of our Boston neighbors, and one thing
remained clear; our work is far from over.
As a result of the pandemic, many families, especially those
with young children, are experiencing worsening mental
health challenges. Despite this critical need for support,
Boston families now face a new challenge in accessing
quality care and early intervention services. Between 2020-
2021, 40% fewer eligible children received early intervention
services, and those who did receive services received fewer
hours per month, dropping from 22 hours to five.
This is a critical time for our community, as early trauma and adversity lead to biological
changes in a young child, leading to long-term problems in mental health, learning, and
physical health. This is why we are proud to announce the newest addition to the
GreenLight Fund portfolio, Child First!
Child First’s proven model is nationally recognized for helping heal and protect young
children and families from the effects of chronic stress and trauma. They provide inhome,
two-generational services that foster strong, nurturing relationships between
child and caregiver and connect families with much-needed services. Child First was
founded in Connecticut, and has scaled its programs to North Carolina, Florida, and
Colorado — and now Boston!
We invite you to celebrate Child First as they grow and serve our city’s young people.
And as we embark on a new selection process for the upcoming year, we invite you
to join us as we innovate and respond to the needs of our community, working in
partnership to identify organizations that tear down barriers and open up pathways to
economic prosperity.
GREENLIGHT FUND: INVESTING IN CHANGE
The GreenLight Fund transforms the lives of children, youth and families in high-poverty urban areas through the GreenLight Method.
• Identify critical unmet needs.
• Import innovative, entrepreneurial programs that can have a significant, measurable impact, and
• Galvanize local support to help programs reach and sustain impact in the new city.
We call our approach the GreenLight Method. The GreenLight
Method is a five-part process that focuses our investments where
they will make the most impact. It’s how we stay nimble enough
to address pressing needs and seize opportunities as they arise.
DISCOVER
WE DISCOVER
We assess the local landscape to discover opportunities for transformation:
urgent issues that are currently not being directly addressed, and where
smart, effective approaches would make a significant difference in the lives
of low-income children and families.
WE SCOUT
We search the country for the most effective solutions: the nonprofits that
are creating new ways to deliver services, connect with their clients and
sustain their work.
WE SELECT
We look at hundreds of nonprofits each year. Through rigorous due
diligence we select the nonprofit that is the best fit for the community—that
meets identified needs with innovation and impact that can be successfully
replicated.
WE INVEST
We invest our funds, time and passion. Our community connections and
INTRODUCING GREENLIGHT FUND’S NEWEST PORTFOLIO MEMBER, CHILD FIRST!
THE CHILD FIRST MODEL
The Child First approach is unique in combining comprehensive, coordinated
services, psychotherapeutic intervention for child and caregiver, and
increasing adult self-regulation and executive functioning in a single
model, resulting in long-term positive outcomes for children and families
through all stages of development.
over their first
4 Years
Services are conducted in the home with the child, parents or other primary
caregivers, and other family members by a clinical team of a Mental Health Clinician and a Care Coordinator.
The Child First intervention targets those families experiencing the most complex, intersecting adversities,
decreases stress within the family, increases stability, facilitates connection to growth-promoting services,
and supports the development of healthy, nurturing, protective relationships.
CHILD-PARENT INTERVENTION
Child First provides Child-Parent
Psychotherapy which helps build
a nurturing, responsive, and safe
caregiver-child relationship. This
protects the child’s developing
brain from the damage of chronic
stress, helps heal the effects of
trauma and adversity for both child
and parent, and promotes strong
emotional health and cognitive
growth.
EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING
Child First partners with parents
and caregivers to strengthen
executive function and selfregulation,
which shape our abilities
to plan ahead, focus attention,
remember details, control impulses,
and juggle multiple tasks. This sets
up caregivers to best nurture the
child’s development of these same
skills and provide a safe, growthenhancing
environment.
INTENSIVE CARE COORDINATION
Child First helps directly decrease
the stress experienced by the
family members by helping them
to identify, navigate, and connect
with comprehensive communitybased
services and supports,
leading to family stabilization,
decreased stress, and utilization
of growth-enhancing community
resources.
Child First Works
Child First is a national, evidence-based, two-generation model created in Connecticut to
address toxic stress and trauma in historically under-resourced families with young children.
Child First aims to prevent emotional disturbance, developmental problems, abuse, and
neglect through psychotherapeutic intervention, intensive care coordination, and
enhancement of executive function.
In a randomized control trial completed in 2011, Child Firstʼs interventions show
substantial improvements across multiple domains:
46% decrease in child behavioral problems
68% decrease in language delays in children
64% lower levels of depression and/or mental health problems in mothers
39% of families were less likely to be involved with child protective services
98% increase in families accessing community services and support
Plans for Boston
The Child First Boston expansion will be driven by the community. Over the next year, four affiliate agencies will be selected and
trained in the Child First approach. With $2.4M already committed outside of GreenLight’s investment, and robust partnerships
in early childhood and mental health, Child First is expected to serve 3,000+ children and families over their first four years.
MEET THE FOUNDER
Dr. Darcy Lowell, Chief Child First & Mental Health Officer
Dr. Darcy Lowell is a developmental & behavioral pediatrician, founder, and
Chief Child First and Mental Health Officer at Child First. In 2001, Dr. Lowell
founded Child First to heal and protect very young children and families from
the impact of trauma and adversity. Dr. Lowell’s work with families affected
by social and economic inequality focuses on the power of early, responsive
relationships to prevent the damaging effects of trauma and early adversity.
Dr. Lowell has been directly involved with program innovation, clinical research,
child advocacy, and system change at the local, state, and national levels.
WESTON
GOLF CLUB
A Donald Ross Course
Since 1894, The Weston Golf Club has earned its
reputation for honoring the skill of the game of golf.
The Par 72, 18-hole golf course was originally designed by
Donald Ross and is the focal point of the club. Although the
Club opened in 1894, the current location was built in
1916-1917. Donald Ross designed the original nine holes
and the expanded par-71 layout, which opened in 1923.
The two newest holes (11 and 12, designed by
Geoffrey Cornish) were added in 1965. These replaced
a very short par 3 and one par 4, and brought the course
to its current par-72 layout. Improvements during
the 1990’s included new tees on 16 and 17.
1PAR 4
The first hole at Weston is a straight forward
opening par 4 that can be reached in two
shots with a good drive.
A player that avoids the bunkers to the left of
the fairway and the heavy rough on the right
will be rewarded.
1
The green is well guarded by bunkers
to the left and short right but
Donald Ross has created lots of
room to run up on longer shots.
2PAR 5
The second hole at Weston is a
demanding 3-shot, straightaway par 5.
A drive in the fairway allows the player to
carefully navigate the layup area that is
heavily bunkered.
The third shot is played uphill to a tiered
green, with a severe false front.
Depending on the hole location, the
approach shot can be difficult and putting
as well if you are not on the proper level.
The third hole at Weston is a long,
downhill par 3 has a classic look of a
New England, Donald Ross golf hole.
The green is surrounded by a collection
by a large bunker on the right.
The green slopes from rear-left to
front-right and it may be difficult
for a player to control their speed.
4PAR 4
The fourth hole at Weston is a long par 4 that
will test even the best of players.
The landing zone is guarded by a very
penalizing fairway bunker.
A good drive down the left side will leave a
short to mid iron into one of the most difficult
putting surfaces at Weston.
The green is guarded by bunkers both to
the left and front right, with a narrow, steep
collection area behind the green. There is
a large mound in the middle of the putting
surface that creates many interesting hole
5PAR 3
The fifth hole at Weston
is the final hole in a stretch of long
and demanding shots that a player faces
to start their round.
This is the most demanding tee shot of
all the par 3’s here at Weston.
5
The green is raised and heavily bunkered
with a treacherous chipping area to the
right of the green. Birdies are rare, and
pars are always a good score.
6PAR 5
The sixth hole at Weston is a classic risk/reward
par 5. The player must decide if they want to be
aggressive and take their drive over the mound,
left of the landing zone. Players may also play
short of the mound or to the right.
Although it’s a huge advantage, the tee shot
does not require a long drive, but rather a wellpositioned
drive.
6
Reachable in two shots, this large green slopes
from back to front with a steep false front that
will challenge the player with multiple shot
varieties and a difficult putting surface.
7PAR 4
The seventh hole at Weston is the club’s
signature hole. The hole lends itself to either
a conservative or aggressive tee shot. An
aggressive play off the tee allows for a short iron
or wedge into a green that slopes back to front,
favoring the player.
This is a great birdie opportunity with a good tee
shot in the fairway.
7
The green is severely sloped from back left to
front right which places a premium on your
approach shot.
The eighth hole at Weston is a classic
short par 4 with a narrow fairway.
Trees and a rocky landscape on the
right side challenge the player
to hit a precise tee shot.
8
Then the player is faced with a short iron
or wedge approach to a perched,
narrow, and two-tiered green that is
very difficult to putt if the approach
is not placed properly.
demanding finish to the front 9.
9
The player faces a downhill tee shot
to a narrow, sloping fairway into a
prevailing wind.
The green is receptive to approach shots
due to its severe slope from
The tenth hole at Weston is a beautiful midrange
par 3, with par always being a good score.
While it requires a modest 165 yard shot, balls
that aren’t hit to the putting surface are very
difficult to get up and down.
The green is raised and falls off on all sides with
deep bunkers guarding the front left and front
right. The putting surface is heavily contoured
and difficult to read.
PAR 5
The eleventh hole at Weston has
water to the right of the fairway that
also needs to be carried on a player’s
approach shot to the green.
11
A good drive off the tee to the left or
short off the pond is faced with a long
approach. This long and gradually
sloping green is guarded on both sides
by bunkers and is the number
The thirteenth hole at Weston is a
bunkerless, dog leg left par 4 that is one
of the most difficult holes on the course.
The blind fairway bends to the left
between the trees that requires a long
drive to reach the green in two shots.
The approach shot is placed
to a raised green that has two tiers
and many subtle breaks which can
make it one of the most difficult putting
surfaces on the course.
The fourteenth hole at Weston
green is difficult to hold from anywhere other
