GENERAL
At registration in Eidfjord in August,
all athletes must present a valid photo
ID (passport, driver’s license or
similar). In addition we require all
athletes to have a valid license to
compete, that includes race insurance by
his/her national triathlon federation.
Athletes unable to obtain this must
procure their own race insurance that
covers accident and liability.
CANCELLATION RULES
As much as we would like to see everyone
at the start line, we know that from
time to time “shit” happens, and you
have to cancel your slot.
If so happens, please refer to this
webpage that will guide you through the
process: www.nxtri.com/cancelling-yourslot.
Please note that the starting fee is
non-refundable. In collaboration with
with XTRI World Tour we will offer
participating athletes a race insurance
cancellation insurance that will apply
in case of serious illness or similar.
insurance
Please note that a starting slot at
Norseman Xtreme Triathlon is strictly
personal. It cannot be transferred, sold
or given to another person. A person
starting Norseman using someone else’s
race number will be disqualified, taken
out of the race and denied participation
in the race the following five years.
RELEASE FROM LIABILITY
CUTOFF
TIMES
Cutoffs are necessary because we
are concerned about your safety.
It is very dangerous to be on the
mountain after dark, or if you are
too exhausted.
You are not permitted to continue
in the race on your own or at your
own risk. The cutoff times and rules
outlined below will be enforced.
POST RACE
INFO
TIME
Water exit.
Exit Transition 2.
Enter cutoff point at 37.5km (Stavsro)
to get the black t-shirt.
Enter cutoff point at 37.5km (Stavsro)
to get the white t-shirt.
Athletes who do not make the black
cutoff (by time or rank) will still
be able to complete the full distance.
They will simply turn around at our
cutoff point after 37,5k and run back
down the same road to the finish line
at the junction with the crossroad
to Gaustablikk Høyfjellshotel. These
finishers will be awarded a white
t-shirt. There is not cutoff time at the
low course finish line.
Please note we have an extra final
cutoff on the run course. If you do
not reach 32.5 km by 17 hours and
30 minutes, you will not be able to
continue to Stavsro, your race is over.
ACTIVITY
2 hours 15 minutes
12 hours
The first 160 athletes (under normal
weather and race conditions), or a fixed
time cutoff of 14 hours 45 minutes. You
must enter the mountain trail before 15
hours.
18 hours 45 minutes
Those who finish on top of Mt.
Gaustatoppen will be brought back down
on the Gaustabanen tramway (lift)
inside the mountain, providing it is
operational.
As the capacity of the tramway has
a low capacity per hour, the number
of athletes we can bring back down
is limited. If the funicular is not
operating, you will have to walk back
down the mountain
.
This is why we only allow the first
160 athletes to enter the mountain at
37.5km.
Remember the journey you will be a
part of. It is not really over until
the T-Shirt ceremony is over. It is
also a safety precaution that we expect
you and your support to stay until
Sunday. The race is crazy hard for
the athlete, but to be honest, even
more so for the support.
If you for some reason are unable to
pick up your finisher shirt Sunday
post-race, please let us know when you
register 1 .
LOST AND FOUND
We will gather gear found during the
race and have a Lost & Found desk in
conjunction the Race Shop Sunday at
Gaustablikk.
Any gear not collected at Gaustablikk
will be donated to the Salvation Army.
1 We will have envelopes for sale where you fill in
your name and address, and we will mail it for
you immediately after the race. If you don´t let
us know, we can’t guarantee you a finisher shirt.
WHY CUTOFF AT 37.5KM FOR
BLACK T-SHIRTS?
The weather in the mountains can be
extreme and may change very quickly. In
2005 and 2007 the race could not finish
at the top, as snow, cold rain and
heavy winds made it unsafe to enter the
final 4.7km up the mountain. It is very
dangerous to go up the mountain if you
are too exhausted! It is also unsafe to
let athletes enter the mountain in the
dark.
10 - Athlete Guide / Norseman 2023
If you withdraw from the race at
any point in time after the prerace
meeting, you are obligated to
inform the race office immediately
by calling +47 468 81 360. During
the race, your support crew
is responsible for calling in
withdrawals. The race office
phone is manned from the
pre-race meeting onwards.
WEATHER, SAFETY
AND SUPPORT
RULES
POSSIBLE CHANGES OF THE
COURSE DUE TO SEVERE WEATHER
Norseman Xtreme Triathlon takes place
at the latitude of Anchorage, Alaska,
and at altitudes from sea level to 1850m
above. Severe weather or other acts of
nature may necessitate changes in the
race.
If the water temperature is cold, if
visibility is low due to fog or rain,
or in case of high waves, strong tide
or other dangerous conditions caused by
severe weather, the swim course could be
shortened, moved further out the fjord,
or be set up as a circuit swim, with the
start and finish in Eidfjord.
If we for some reason are unable to
safely organize the swim, we have plans
in place for organizing the race as a
duathlon (run, bike, run).
Severe weather at Mt. Gaustatoppen can
make the final 4.7km trek to the top
of the mountain impossible. If the
conditions are deemed too severe, the
mountain top finish will be closed.
Instead, the “black finish” athletes
will turn at 37.5km (Stavsro), to finish
the race back at the 32.5km checkpoint.
The mountain top checkpoint could close
at any time during the competition, if
so, it is likely due to fog or snow.
THE OLD ROAD AND TUNNELS
The “old road” up the Måbø valley is;
old. From time to time there will be
parts of it that are closed. The latest
news on this will always be presented at
the race briefing.
Currently the middle section is closed
and you will ride inside the Måbø
Tunell. It is 1,9km 7% incline and goes
in a loop. Both you and your support
should pay very close attention to the
ride/drive procedure through the tunnel
presented at the race brief.
MOUNTAIN SAFETY CHECKPOINT
AND CUTOFF AT STAVSRO
(37.5KM)
37.5km into the run, the course leaves
the tarmac road. The final 4.7km of
the race is on a rocky mountain trail.
As there always is a risk of extreme
weather conditions on the mountain, this
checkpoint/cutoff is to ensure that:
• You and your support crew are fit to
continue to the top
• Both you and your support each
carry a backpack with the mandatory
equipment listed in section “Athlete
Registration”.
There will be a compulsory check at
registration and a secondary equipment
check at Mountain checkpoint/cutoff
37,5 km (everyone will be held for two
minutes so do not panic or think others
have an advantage).
You will not be allowed to enter the
mountain alone. If your support does not
follow you into the mountain, you will
be held back and paired with the next
competitor (if they agree to this). This
applies to all competitors.
SUPPORT
A personal support car is mandatory.
The athlete’s support team is expected
to provide their athlete with food and
drink during the entire bike and run
legs. We will serve soup at the finish
line.
GENERAL RULES
Norseman Xtreme Triathlon is sanctioned
by The Norwegian Triathlon Federation
(NTF), and we adhere to their rules.
The NTF rules adhere to the World
Triathlon competition rules, so that
if your knowledge of Norwegian is
limited you can focus on studying the
World Triathlon competition rules.
Understanding the base rules of
triathlon is crucial to having a fair
and safe race. This manual only covers
the exceptions and additions to the base
rules.
Exceptions and additions to the above
rules are described below. The World
Triathlon paragraph is noted in
parenthesis. If there are any conflicts
between the World Triathlon and NTF
rules, the NTF rule will apply.
This is a long distance “NON drafting
event”. From 2023, the bicycle draft
zone is 20 meters long, measured from
the leading edge of the front wheel.
PENALTIES
Race marshals can issue time penalties
or disqualify athletes if either the
athlete or their support team violates
the rules.
Time penalties:
Minor violations
(yellow card or
blue card for
drafting
3 rd violation, major
violations or
dangerous behavior
(red card)
5 minutes for
both. Exception
from NTF
competition
rule 23.4.10.
(3.3.f).
Disqualification
Penalty boxes for serving time penalties
are placed in T2 and at 37,4km of the
run course. Penalties given after 37,4km
will be added to the finish time.
• All athletes must be over 20 years
of age on race day. Addition to NTF
Competition rules 4.1.4. (2.5 j).
NTF Competition rule 7.2.1 (4.2 and
4.9.d).
• The race number should not be worn
during the swim, and must be stored
visibly in T1, until the athlete exits
the water. Addition to NTF Competition
rules 2.9.1 (2.9.c).
• The race number must be visible from
the back at all times during the bike
segment and from the front during the
run. World Triathlon Competition rules
2.9.a.
• A yellow CE approved reflective vest
needs to be available at all times
during the race. It is mandatory
from T1 to “begin support” and for
the “white finish” after sunset, but
may also be required all day if bad
weather. Addition to NTF Competition
rules 7.4.2.
• Bikes must be in compliance with NTF
and World Triathlon competition rules.
• The bike must have working lights
support must have crossed the finish
line no later than 1 minute after the
athlete finishes.
SUPPORT
TEAM
Less is more when it comes to support.
Check our map (https://map.nxtri.com/comp/) for recommended support stops
JOB DESCRIPTION
This journey through spectacular
Norwegian landscapes is a unique and
unforgettable experience, but it is not
without risk to the athletes.
Having support is both absolutely
necessary and a requirement for
participation. Athletes depend on
their support throughout the race.
Please read the support team rules
below carefully, make sure you
understand them, and remember them
throughout the long race day.
In addition to helping ensure the
safety of their athlete, the support
teams contribute greatly to the
Zalaris Norseman experience and
its unique atmosphere.
Finishing Norseman is a triumph to share
with family and friends. We often hear
support teams being just as enthusiastic
about their Norseman weekend as their
athlete is, claiming that the experience
was exciting and fun and strengthened
friendship or family ties.
Strong claims… we look forward to having
you, and letting you experience it for
yourself!
At least one person in the support team
• Must be able to communicate with the
Norseman organization in English or
Norwegian.
• Must wear the Norseman wristband
and support vest when entering the
transition zones to pick up equipment.
• Must be available on mobile phone
throughout the race and until 18:00 on
Sunday evening.
The support vehicle
• Should be an ordinary car (sedan,
station wagon or SUV). Campers, RVs,
and cars with any kind of trailers are
not allowed.
• Must display the Norseman logo
stickers and the bib number of the
athlete clearly at the front and the
back of the car.
SUPPORT RULES
• Note that the support rules are
possibly the most essential rules
of the race. Close to 80% of the
penalties issued to Norseman athletes
on race day are related to support
failing to study, understand and
adhere to the rules below!
• As a participant in Norseman, you
receive support from your one- or twoperson
pre- selected support team.
• The athlete is responsible for
ensuring that their support team
understands their role and our
rules, which are there to ensure
participants' safety. Addition to NTF
Competition rule 4.1. (2.1).
• Support (max two persons) have to
register alongside the athlete in
Eidfjord.
• Support during the race is only
allowed from your support and is
limited to providing drinks, nutrition
and clothing.
• The support team is limited to the use
of one car only. That also implies
transporting all necessary food and
gear for the athlete. Additional
passengers may be in the car, but they
may not engage in the support role.
• Support from others than the
registered support is considered
outside assistance and will result in
disqualification. This is to avoid
more than one support car per athlete
Addition to NTF Competition rule 21.
(2.2).
• Please note that if the support
team causes dangerous situations by
behaving recklessly or violating these
rules, the athlete will be penalized
or disqualified. Addition to NTF
Competition rule 23.5.1 (3.1.f).
• Upon the approval of the Race Office
or a Race Marshall, support may
provide mechanical equipment, tools
or even helping hands. But only after
approval.
• The support vehicle shall at all
times abide by Norwegian traffic
regulations. This includes, but is not
limited to: Speed limits, distance to
athletes, crew, cars, goats, reindeer
and anything else you may meet on
the road. Don't even consider being
inspired by the peloton cars in Tour
de France! This is Norseman; like it
or not, and roads are open for all.
Make it safe for all!
• All support and communication must be
provided from outside of the car and
never through a car window, even if
the vehicle is parked.
• Athletes may not sit in the car at
any time during the race, even if the
vehicle is parked.
• During the bike segment, support is
only allowed when the car is parked on
the right side of the road outside the
white road demarcation line.
• During the bike segment, support may
only be given between Garen (24km) and
Imingfjell (approx. 152km).
• The car must always be parked off the
road during the run segment. It must
be with all four wheels outside the
white road demarcation line.
• The support crew may not accompany the
athlete running until reaching Zombie
Hill at 25 k on the run.
• Running in front of the athlete is
regarded as pacing and is not allowed
at any point".
FRIENDS, FAMILY
AND OTHER
SPECTATORS
• The support must be able to follow the
athlete up the mountain to provide
safety for the athlete.
• The support must walk back down from
the finish at the mountain. This
is because the lift has a limited
capacity and can therefor only
transport the athletes. The shuttle
bus will pick up the support at
Stavsro when they are back from the
mountain.
• To be able to pick up the athlete's
equipment in the transition zones,
the support person is required to be
wearing the Norseman wristband and
support vest.
Violation of the rules listed
above may lead to a time penalty
for the athlete or to his/her
disqualification.
If an athlete withdraws during
the course of the race, the
support crew is responsible for
informing the Race Office.
Race office phone number is
+47 468 81 360
Keep the Norseman wristband, the
card with the Race Office phone
number and your mobile phone with
you at all times during the race.
PARKING BEFORE FINISHING
To secure a predictable and safe
final stretch of the run the following
will apply:
1. No support vehicles beyond 32km.
2. All accredited support and crew
vehicles must be parked in designated
parking areas around the 32km cutoff
point. Only accredited cars will be
allowed to park here. A small number
of support might have to walk 500
meters from alternative parking.
3. There will be a shuttle service from
32km to 37.5km approximately three
departures every hour.
4. Support may accompany athlete on foot
from 32km to 37.5km.
5. The bckgpack with safety gear is
mandatory from 37.5km (Stavsro).
But please take parking into
consideration when planning when to
have the backpacks ready.
6. Please pay close attention the
directions from crew and parking
attendants.
7. The shuttle buses will continue to
run all evening. Picking up support
from 37.5km when they return down
the mountain as well as the athletes
when they come out from the funicular
descending inside the mountain.
Zalaris Norseman Xtreme Triathlon is
an extreme race, and parts of it is in
locations with limited logistics. All
athletes have their own support vehicle,
and this makes parts of the race course
very crowded at times.
If you have family members or friends
planning to come see you race in person,
make sure they look at our map, where we
have marked good spots to watch from.
Spots that has ample parking, unless
otherwise stated.
BE
FRIENDLY
CREW
Please be friendly to the Norseman crew.
They are all volunteers, who have worked
hard to give you the experience of a
lifetime. The only pay they get – and
the only reward they are looking for –
is your enthusiasm.
RACE OFFICIALS
Please be friendly to the race officials
(race director, marshals and medics),
who take care of your safety. You are
most likely to encounter them on your
marathon ascent from Rjukan to Stavsro.
If you are unable to eat and drink,
they are required to take you out of
the race. Yes, this is a race like no
other, and yes, you are doing it at your
own risk, but your safety is still our
first priority, and we want to avoid
casualties.
SPONSORS
Please be friendly to
our sponsors and
partners. They help us
keep your entry
fee as low as possible.
PHOTOGRAPHERS
Our photographers will travel along on
the race. They will take photos and
video of you and other athletes, even
when you are exhausted. You may not
like it then, but trust us: the photos
will be cool, and you’ll love having
them afterwards. You do not need to
acknowledge the photographers; just let
them do their job.
LOCALS
Please be friendly to the locals. They
are totally amazed that you came, and
they think you’re completely nuts to
be doing this. You are. And they will
support you the best way they can in
your effort to succeed.
NORSEMAN
RESEARCH
NORSEMAN AS A RESEARCH
PLATFORM
The knowledge of how the human body
is affected by extreme endurance
competitions like Norseman is limited.
Norseman represents a unique research
platform to gain more knowledge and
insight into this area. Since 2015,
more than 250 volunteers have
participated in different research
projects undertaken during Norseman.
MAIN AIM OF THE STUDIES
The main aim of our research projects
is to increase the safety of competing
athletes in extreme events by increasing
the knowledge of how such competitions
affect the human body. We have ongoing
projects investigating the effects of
cold-water swimming, how pulmonary and
cardiovascular function is affected
by extreme endurance exercise, in
addition to investigations of the
acute and long-term effect of
Norseman upon different biomarkers
used in clinical settings.
NORSEMAN RESEARCH TEAM
The Norseman research team has steadily
grown since being established in
2015. The team is led by Professor
Jonny Hisdal (University of Oslo/Oslo
university Hospital), Dr. Jørgen Melau
(Norwegian armed Forces/Oslo University
Hospital), and Professor Trine Stensrud
(Norwegian School of Sport and Science).
In addition to Norseman’s in-house
research team, we cooperate with some
of the world’s leading researchers in
their field and have several ongoing PhD
projects related to our work.
INTERESTED IN
