Engineering and applied science advancements move at a rapid pace, transcending
disciplines as we aspire to bring innovation to transform lives and take us
closer to solving the biggest challenges facing our world. We anticipate that the
breakthroughs developed at Columbia Engineering will be part of a new era of
innovation. At the same time, we recognize the ethical and practical questions
that so often arise with the emergence of new technology and our responsibility,
as engineers and applied scientists, to think deeply about these questions and to convey this
responsibility to our students.
This booklet provides a snapshot of our faculty and the wide-ranging research they
are pursuing. We are united by our school vision, Columbia Engineering for Humanity, a
vision that seeks to put engineers at the forefront of creating a sustainable, healthy, secure,
connected, and creative humanity. Our research and education efforts are inherently
interdisciplinary across our School and across the University.
Our faculty are at the forefront of the most important research initiatives of our time,
working across disciplines with our sister schools and our world-class institutes and
initiatives: the Data Science Institute, Earth Institute, Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior
Institute, Columbia Nano Initiative, Precision Medicine, Irving Institute for Cancer Dynamics,
Columbia Entrepreneurship, and Global Columbia.
Together we are working from the macroscale to the nanoscale, discovering new materials
and methodologies for cleaner water, smarter and sustainable cities, personalized medicine,
private and secure transactions, faster networks, a host of creative possibilities enabled by
artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality, and so much more.
Throughout our curriculum and programming, faculty are dedicating themselves to
new ways of teaching, embedding design, hands-on learning, ethics, entrepreneurship,
and innovation into our research and education mission. Their work is bringing new ideas
and innovation to countless areas—from energy and health care to media and finance—
and increasing access to critical resources and health services for underserved areas and
communities.
I invite you to learn more about the diverse research interests of our distinguished faculty, a
truly remarkable group of thinkers, investigators, and visionaries who are translating research
for the benefit of us all.
