Uni students designing
fourth river footbridge
CANTERBURY University
students are working with
city council staff to design a
fourth pedestrian bridge for the
Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor.
Seven civil engineering and
fine arts students are working
on concept drawings for the
new Dallington bridge. This
footbridge will be situated near
Robson Ave and will provide
the final, vital river crossing for
the future City to Sea Pathway.
City council head of parks,
Andrew Rutledge says the third
and fourth-year students have
been provided with the dimensions,
budget and the cultural
narrative of the area, and are
being encouraged to explore
ways to incorporate sustainability
into their design.
“This is a
great example
of finding ways
that we can
involve the
community in the
Andrew
Rutledge
development of
the Ōtākaro Avon
River Corridor
Regeneration
Area,” Rutledge said.
“The students are very motivated
and are already looking
at how they can use recycled
materials in the design, as well
as different ways to portray the
cultural narrative for the area.”
Third-year civil engineering
student Giselle Dousti said
being involved in a project that
had real-world application was
an opportunity she couldn’t
pass up.
“It’s really exciting to work
on something in real life, and
it’s been a great opportunity to
work with the fine arts students
on how we can bring their creative
ideas to life,” she said.
The students will check in
with the city council’s red zone
team as their designs progress.
Mana whenua and key
groups will review and provide
feedback on the concepts. City
council staff will then undertake
cost and concept reviews,
then incorporate structural
requirements and safety standards,
and finalise the design.
Construction of the bridge
COLLABORATION: The Imaginarium was built for and by a
group of children aged five to seven over two weeks, along with
the help of parents, caregivers, and a design team The group
used full-size modules to assemble the playground on the last
day of the programme.
Children contribute to high profile award
• By Natalie Pham
THE IDEA of project Place
Cadets was simple – to show the
values of including children in
public space design.
But that simple yet innovative
idea was announced a joint
winner for the category He Iti
Pounamu at the Resene New
Zealand Institute of Landscape
Architects Awards last week.
Judges said the project showed
how children can participate in
design as researchers and creators
of their spaces.
“[We] applauded the approach
which saw tamariki (children)
able to witness their ideas become
a reality and gaining a real
sense of belonging and inspiration
in the process.”
This category was judged using
eight key criteria, including
innovation in planning and
solutions, added value for the
community, effective sustainable
management, influence and
significance.
The idea for the project came
after a discussion between the
Phillipstown Community Centre
Charitable Trust and a design
team from Gather Landscape
Architecture about creating
meaningful engagement with the
community.
Said trust manager Viviana
Zanetti: “We needed to find
a way that allow people to
contribute in a meaningful way.
So we wanted to try something
new.”
So a group of 21 children aged
five to seven participated in a
two-week programme in 2020 to
design and build the playground
Imaginarium.
The name, decided together
with the group, represents the
idea that the playground can be
“anything”.
Lead landscape architect
Wendy Hoddinott said the final
outcome reflected what the
children would like to play in,
not the adults’ assumptions.
The $5000 playground, located
in the Phillipstown Community
Hub, was assembled by the
group, parents and caregivers on
the last day of the programme.
Funding was sought and
granted by city council, Hamptons
in Ferry Rd, the Lions Club
Ferrymead and the Christchurch
Rotary Club.
The project, along with Te
Raekura Redcliffs School and He
Puna Taimoana Hot Pools, were
three landscape architecture
works in Christchurch that
received a reward this year.
The new primary school was
a joint winner in Education
and Play, while the city councilowned
facility in New Brighton
received the Award of Excellence
in the category Park, Open
Spaces and Recreation.
The Harcourts Geraldine Festival,
featuring the Alpine Energy Art
Exhibition and Awards, is delighted
to be returning after a hiatus during
COVID, with plenty in store for
everyone to enjoy at this year’s event.
The Festival opens on the evening of
Thursday 10th November with the
Alpine Energy Art Awards, marking
the 25th year that Alpine Energy
has supported and sponsored the
exhibition. We will be celebrating this
important silver anniversary in style
that evening with refreshments and
nibbles, and awards announcements,
plus the first chance to view and
purchase art. Everyone is welcome.
Friday gives way to the busy and vibrant
street market in the centre of Geraldine,
with local favourites OJ and the Drama
Queens entertaining the crowds.
Saturday is the main event, when the
peaceful Geraldine Domain becomes
a bustling hub for a day as stalls, food
trucks, kids’ entertainment, and live music
blend to create a great family day out.
Our open gardens are a hugely popular
part of the festival, and most are open
Friday through to Sunday, giving
everyone a chance enjoy them at
their leisure. There are also a range of
complementary events taking place in
and around Geraldine that weekend,
including vintage car displays and rides,
book-a-rama, Soul Food Concert and
much more.
TOP NOTCH: Luxurious
retirement village ‘The
Pavillion’ has been
inspired by iconic
buildings, including
Raffles in Singapore.
Its opening cabaret
featured Ali Harper.
Retirement Raffles style
UPMARKET retirement village
Burlington in Prestons Rd has
just unveiled the jewel in the
crown of its luxury complex.
Dubbed ‘The Pavilion’, the imposing
two storey building sits in
the heart of the village and comprises
a restaurant, bar, indoor
pool, movie theatre, hair salon,
library, café, bakery, wellness
centre and gym. Alongside those
facilities are 42 one-and-twobedroom
serviced apartments
available in a range of sizes, up
to 100m2 (with a 30m2 deck or
balcony).
Managing director Simon
O’Dowd said The Pavilion is
inspired by iconic buildings such
as Raffles in Singapore and the
Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva.
“It’s important that our residents
have a vibrant hub where
they can spend time during the
day and evening, to socialise and
exercise,” he said.
“Sometimes they’ll just pop
in and relax in the library
with a book while they have a
cup of coffee or meet friends
for morning tea. At night, the
restaurant is in full swing and
we’re planning a variety of
regular evening entertainment.
The cabaret with Ali Harper that
opened The Pavilion was a huge
hit.”
Set on 15 hectares overlooking
three man-made lakes,
Burlington will have 214 houses
when the last stage is completed.
Apartments start at $394,000
and houses at $938,000, with a
range of serviced options.
O’Dowd said while some
people are looking to downsize,
others still want bigger homes.
In answer to that demand, Burlington
is launching a new 220sq
m house design featuring two
living areas, three bedrooms,
two-and-a-half bathrooms, and a
double garage.
“Everyone has different needs
and we’ve worked hard at Burlington
to make sure we can offer
a variety of options to suit what
people want. While many of our
residents are retired, some still
head out to work each day and
we have to make sure they’re
catered for with the likes of our
exercise classes and other activities
on offer.”
Together with the independent
living options, Burlington has a
care centre comprising 60 rest
home/hospital rooms, all with an
ensuite and outdoor living area,
and a boutique 20-room dementia
facility.
Designed by Kerry Mason and
Huia Reriti of +MAP Architects,
Burlington is owned by Qestral
Corporation which also has
Alpine View, also in Prestons
Rd, and the soon-to-be-opened
Banbury Park in Halswell,
together with Coastal View
Lifestyle Village in Nelson.
A TRUSTED FAMILY
BUSINESS FOR
OVER 47 YEARS
For the past 45 years Rob Kendall has
been selling beds and furniture
from the family business at 233
Stanmore Road, Richmond and
for the past 20 years working
alongside his wife Alison.
The family business has been
in operation since 1975 and
was officially purchased by Rob
and Alison earlier this year. They
maintain they will continue operating
from the site and providing the same
excellent service their customers have come
to expect.
Richmond Discount Furniture, dubbed by a
customer as “the best little furniture shop in
town”, is a place where customers enjoy popping
in on a regular basis to find themselves a bargain,
with items normally priced well below other retail
stores, Alison says.
Due to their long-term relationship with many of
the local bed manufacturers, Rob and Alison are
able to source some great factory specials for their
customers, along with a wide selection of new and
factory-redundant bed and mattress sets.
“We also have a good
selection of both
imported and
locally made
bedroom furniture,
entertainment units, coffee
tables, dining tables and chairs,
and anything else we can get
our hands on,” Rob says.
“By calling in on a regular basis
you are sure to find yourself a
bargain!”
Parking is never an issue, with the
option of parking at the front door on
Stanmore Rd, or in the yard behind the shop,
with the entrance off Draper Street, which is
shared with Richmond Fruit & Vege.
Richmond Discount Furniture offers local
delivery for a minimal charge, but customers
are more than welcome to pick up their
purchases, which are easily collected using
the yard at the back of the shop.
Rob and Alison have enjoyed the friendships
they have created with so many of their
customers over the years. They would like
to thank all their customers for their continued
support of this small family business as they look
forward to continuing to offer up the best deals
alongside the best service moving forward.
Richmond Discount Furniture is open Monday to
Friday, 10am-4.30pm and Saturday, 10am-1pm.
Virtual walk brings back memories
of earlier Travis Wetland excursions
RYMAN Healthcare residents
taking part in the Walking for
Wellness event were excited the
Travis Wetland park provided
a historic backdrop for their
walking challenge.
Diana Isaac village resident
Penny Beardsley and a group of
fellow residents met at the start of
the walk at the Beach Rd car park,
colourfully dressed and pleased
with their progress on Ryman’s
Active Ageing event for 2022.
In New Zealand, Ryman
residents are using their steps
on pedometers and apps to add
to their progress on a virtual
walk along the Abel Tasman
Coastal Track over the 30 days in
October.
In Australia, residents are
virtually walking 60km of
the Mornington Peninsula
over the same timeframe.
Ryman Healthcare has villages
throughout New Zealand, and in
Victoria, Australia, and the walks
by 1,300 residents reflect this.
In Christchurch, there have
been a number of inter-village
walks, including at Bottle Lake,
Hagley Park, the Harry Ell Track
and Travis Wetland.
Penny said she was one of
the city council’s walking coordinators
under the stewardship
HAPPY WALKERS: Diana Isaac residents Hope Williams (left), Sonia Deller, Penny Beardsley
and Shirley Piper.
of then mayor Vicki Buck in the
1990s. Both she and her husband
Ron (a member of the Fire
Service) did physical work on the
Travis Wetland walkway with
hundreds of other people over
many months.
Pukekos and paradise ducks
were out in support and the
surrounding wetland bush
looked stunning.
“I’m very amazed to see
how it (the wetlands area) has
progressed. It was quite a little
underwater swamp . . . It was
kind of just scrub and rough
tracks and everything was under
water. We’re delighted to see it
how it is now,” Penny said.
Penny is a melanoma survivor.
She regularly walked on
Tuesdays with a group of other
cancer survivors around Hagley
Park, finishing with a cup of
coffee at the Antigua Boat Shed
Café.
Alongside Penny was Shirley
Piper, another keen walker.
Shirley said she also took part
in the earlier Hagley Park
challenge, and with other
residents enjoyed a coffee
afterwards.
Ryman chief strategy officer
Mary-Anne Stone said the
positive feedback from residents
was continuing, with the virtual
walk about halfway through.
“It’s extraordinary how many
people are out there walking and
we’re hearing beautiful stories
about the difference it’s making
for them.”
Some residents are using
smartphones or smart watches
to track their virtual steps, while
others are using pedometers
supplied by Ryman.
A virtual awards ceremony
will be held on November 23 to
celebrate the winners.
WE HAVE fraternal meetings
during the day, as many
members prefer not to drive
at night or due to age are
brought to the lodge by a
family member.
Meetings are less formal
than the Freemasons lodges,
which meet in the evenings.
Our only ceremonies are
opening and closing the lodge
then joining our ladies for
lunch, a speaker, an activity or
an outing.
The lodge was founded
in 1990, based on a similar
Australian idea, and was one
of the first daylight lodges in
New Zealand.
We support Canterbury
District Freemasons projects,
such as volunteering for
netball, car parking duties
at Hazeldean Business Park,
and Christmas gift wrapping
COMMUNITY SERVICE: The Pegasus Daytime Lodge supports children’s charities
and women’s refuges.
at The Hub Hornby. Our
pet project is repurposing
used golf trolleys and
Eco-shop bush buggies into
carts for kids, which are then
donated to charities such as
the Cholmondeley Children’s
Foundation, the Woolston
after school care, and various
women’s refuges. One of our
members doubles as Santa at
their Christmas functions.
Freemasonry is open to
men of good standing in
the community over 18 and
offers personal development
training.
As an older member and
mentor, it is most rewarding
to watch young men be
initiated and to witness their
progress into confident wellrounded
members of society.
There is no age limit, which
is where the Pegasus Daylight
Lodge excels by extending the
masonic journey into twilight
years.
Freemasons are proud of
the community work they
do – for example, university
scholarships, Rescue Helicopter
Trust, Netball Canterbury,
women’s refuges, medical
research and many other
individuals and organisations.
Women are involved at a
social level and their support
is valued at the many events
held regularly.
• Pegasus Daylight
Lodge meets on the
third Wednesday
monthly at the
Canterbury Freemasons
Centre. Inquiries to the
