DESIGN CANBERRA FESTIVAL 2022
The DESIGN Canberra Festival is presented on Ngunnawal Country.
Craft ACT: Craft + Design Centre acknowledges the Ngunnawal people as
the traditional custodians of the ACT and surrounding areas. We honour and
respect their ongoing cultural and spiritual connections to this country and the
contribution they make to the life of this city and this region. We aim to respect
cultural heritage, customs and beliefs of all Indigenous people.
A message from the CEO
The DESIGN Canberra Festival, presented by Craft ACT: Craft + Design Centre,
contributes to the soul of Canberra and our identity as a creative capital and a city
of design. Design is in Canberra’s DNA with First Nation people’s strong ongoing
cultural and spiritual connections to this city and region - in which making, and
design are embedded within cultural practice. Canberra has always been a
dynamic design laboratory and place of creative enterprise which is embodied in
the Griffins’ visionary design for the city, Canberra’s iconic modernist architecture;
and its thriving contemporary sustainable design, craft and art industries.
This year’s festival responds to the theme of Transformation and invites us to
speculate on how we might transform our city, our community and our world
through design and creative practice. After two years of the pandemic, the
Festival makes an impressive comeback - with the 2022 program promising to be
bigger than ever before with over 200 events including symposiums, talks, tours,
exhibitions, public art installations, and workshops for audiences of all ages.
The DESIGN Canberra Festival is delivered through extraordinary collaboration
between artists, designers, craftspeople, industry, sponsors, educational
institutions, organisations and supporters; whose creativity and commitment
contributes to community wellbeing and identity; and to embedding
contemporary craft, making and design at the center of everyday life in Australia’s
capital, a global city of design.

+TRANSFORMATION
DESIGN Canberra 2022 celebrates the theme of Transformation.
In the context of the challenges our community and our world have faced over
the last few years including the global pandemic, the climate emergency, the fires,
and the floods; we have a shared responsibility and an opportunity to achieve real
transformation.
The ninth edition of the DESIGN Canberra Festival asks how can we and should
we transform our world though design? Design thinking and creative enterprise
have the capacity to solve the big issues of our time, improve our wellbeing; and
to foster a vibrant, equitable, sustainable and innovative society.
The Festival theme arose from planning for Craft ACT’s 50th - golden -
anniversary which took place in 2021. Inspired by the symbolism of gold and the
ways that artists and designers, like alchemists, transform raw materials and ideas
into objects, spaces buildings and concepts.
Since 1971 Craft ACT has played a vital role in sustaining Australia’s high-quality
studio practice and supporting craftspeople, designers and audiences. We are
proudly one of Australia’s longest continuous-running membership organisations
in the visual arts and we celebrate the many ways our close-knit community has
nurtured and transformed artists’ practice for half a century.

+DESIGNER-IN-RESIDENCE
Canberra-based artist and educator Lucy Irvine has been selected as the 2022
Designer-in-Residence. We commissioned Lucy to create a signature work which
defines the look and feel of this year’s festival and to develop a site-specific
public art installation to be presented during the Festival in November 2022.
Lucy Irvine’s work transforms the traditional craft practice of weaving into
sculptural installations. Lucy repurposes mundane, utilitarian materials like
expansion joint foam, paper fasteners and cable ties, transforming them into
beautiful and acclaimed public artwork.
+DESIGNER-IN-RESIDENCE
In creating The Stills, Irvine has revisited two small sections of weaving, cast them
in bronze, then used repetition and pattern forming to show the iterative process
of transformation. The artist explains: 'Our appreciation of transformation can too
easily rely upon a definitive before and after. What if transformation could also
be an ongoing process without a beginning or an end, existing in a million small
interrelations that are, for example, happening long before the materials are in
hand and long after the work is on the wall?' Irvine describes her new work as a
‘woven cinema’, capturing transformation in stop motion: frame by frame we see
change as reassuringly measurable.
Limited edition signature works will be available for sale during the DESIGN
Canberra Festival at the Hub Shop.

EVERY BOTTLE OF PROSECCO DOC
IS AN EXPERIENCE OF ITALIAN EXCELLENCE,
BUT ONLY IF IT’S AUTHENTIC.
Drink responsibly
WHEN YOU TOAST, BE ORIGINAL!
Only authentic Prosecco DOC has the government seal on the neck of the
bottle and it’s never sold on tap or cans. Always produced within the nine
provinces of Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia, in Northeast Italy, its unique taste
expresses the essence of the Prosecco DOC Dreamland.
