“Lee saved our entire house deal, and we couldn’t be more thankful to him and his team. We were
working with another lender for weeks, who assured us everything was running on schedule, and
then called us right before closing telling us they couldn’t get an appraisal, it wasn’t possible in
the area, it was too busy. We got in touch with Lee instead, and he got an appraisal scheduled,
and the deal was back on track immediately. His team was prompt with responses and very
helpful with inquiries. They got us in our house right before Christmas and were amazing to the
very end and after with followups.” - Alana B, 2022

KKarie Lee Knoke comes from a long line of pioneers.
Her great great great grandfather, who was a scout on
the Oregon Trail, homesteaded with his pregnant wife
in the Pacific Northwest Territories in 1839—near what is
now Goldendale, Washington. Karie was born in Richland,
Washington, the daughter of an inspiring engineer at Hanford.
Her grandparents lived in Cocolalla, Idaho, where Karie often
visited as a child.
It would be the beauty of the wilderness that called her to leave
the corporate world of Seattle to settle in North Idaho nearly
30 years ago, where she would go on to found Sacred Cedars
Wilderness School.
In 2022, Karie would use her honed wilderness skills to be cast
in the ninth season of the History Channel’s “Alone.”
Q. What inspired your love of the wilderness?
A. I have always loved being out in the woods. It is my happy place.
It’s where I have grown the most because you are dealing with natural
elements on nature’s terms and not your own. It gets you outside of
yourself and propels growth.
Q. What called you to part ways with Seattle and the corporate
world to move to Sandpoint?
A. One afternoon, in 1993, as I was sitting in rush-hour traffic on I-5
in Seattle, I noticed that the smog, which typically rolled in and out,
was not leaving, and all the car pollution. At that moment, I knew I
had to leave, as I promised myself as a child never to live in a polluted
city. I had to go.
I was miserable in my corporate career world and longed to get back
into nature and be able to have a community of like-minded folks who
enjoy the mountains as much as I do. I typically spent my weekends
venturing into the Cascade Mountains to go backpacking, so I
decided that I wanted to quit being a weekend warrior and move to
the mountains to be full-time immersed in nature and live off the land.
Q. You currently teach wilderness and primitive living skills
through Sacred Cedars Wilderness School, which you founded.
What can your students hope to learn?
A. Sacred Cedars is not just your ordinary wilderness school. You
will discover the skills of primitive wilderness survival and nature
connection. We bring in the soft skills of survival as well. How TO BE
in the woods, not just how TO DO in the woods. Connecting to the
land in a way that shares reciprocity and gratitude.
Q. You were one of 10 survivalists to make the cut to be cast in the
History Channel’s ninth season of “Alone.” What drew you to want
to be a part of the show, and how did the selection process work?
A. I first heard of the show after Season 2, when my friends Nicole
Apelian and Jose Amoedo were on it. I was initially contacted for
Season 3 through Facebook Messenger, but I only had a flip phone at
the time and didn’t get the message until too late. I applied for Season
6, sent in casting videos, and I made it into the top 100 who get sent
to the History Channel executives for review. When I didn’t make the
cut, I chose to do my own “Alone” show and headed into the Bitterroot
Mountains for six weeks, using my handmade primitive gear and
eating 100 percent wild foods, and filmed myself doing it. Many of
these videos were used for my casting cut for Season 9. The executives
loved it!
From here, the executive producers choose, out of all who auditioned,
20 to 25 people. Your survival skills are tested, and extensive medical,
physiological and background checks are done. The finalists were
chosen to fit their demographics, and I filled the female primitive
skills role.
Q. What were your first thoughts after hearing you were selected
to participate? And how did you prepare for the journey you were
about to embark on?
A. I was anxious, excited, and relieved! The thing is, I had just
purchased 12.7 acres of land for the wilderness school. Then the show
contacted me two weeks later and asked me to apply again. My first
thought was, “Now?”
Q. Is there anything you discovered about yourself while being
“alone” out in the wilderness?
A. It's funny how we B-rate ourselves as not being good enough. I felt
I wasn’t a good enough huntress because I was missing a lot of squirrel
shots, only to find out that everyone has trouble hitting those dang
squirrels! Ha ha! I was humbled.
Q. What do you enjoy doing in your downtime?
A. I love crafting and making things with natural materials. Even
while watching a movie, I’ll be sewing on my buckskin. I also make
wild-crafted healing remedies that I sell and use in my energy work
practice. I love foraging for my food and medicines and hunting for
the meat that sustains my body. And, of course, anything that allows
me to be outside.
Q. What do you enjoy most about living in Sandpoint and being
part of the community?
A. The incredible thing about Sandpoint is that there really is a
community here. People know who you are and genuinely care about
your well-being. It’s a small town where you are surrounded by friends
who also love the outdoors. It’s not hard to find someone to go “play,”
whether for a hike, ski, fish or paddle. Folks here don’t just come here
to work.
Q. Is there anything that people might find surprising to know
about Karie Lee Knoke?
A. Most people would never believe that I used to be a systems
analyst consultant, where I worked for companies such as Microsoft
and Pemco Insurance. I wore an IBM pin-striped suit with nylons and
heels and carried a leather briefcase. I still have that suit for proof. I am
so grateful that I listened to my inner child and followed my dreams!
Q. Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?
A. Do your dream! Life is short; be you, find your passion, and don’t
settle for mediocrity.

SANDPOINT HIGH SCHOOL’S
HEALTH PROFESSIONS
PROGRAM RECEIVES GRANT
TO PURCHASE STATE-OF-THE-
ART BODYINTERACT VIRTUAL
PATIENT SOFTWARE
BY CHRISTIAN WEANER
During the 2020-21 school year, when schools across the
country were scrambling to give their students the best
learning opportunities possible within the stringent
COVID-19 guidelines, Sandpoint High School’s (SHS) Health
Professions teacher Liz Smith hatched a humorous, yet effective,
method to give her students hands-on experience.
“One thing we did [during the 2020-21 school year]—we couldn’t
go to clinicals [or] go to the nursing homes because of COVID—
so we actually got drama students to come in and pretend to be
patients here in the lab,” Liz laughed. “So that was fun.”
Now two years removed from her whimsical and creative idea,
Liz no longer needs to rely on theatre students to provide realistic
simulations of medical scenarios. Thanks to her successful
application for the state’s Leading Idaho Grant, Liz’s students can
now test their medical knowledge and diagnostic skills on SHS’s
new state-of-the-art BodyInteract software—a virtual patient
simulator that Liz believes will take her classes to the next level.
Liz and her family moved to Sandpoint 13 years ago. She has been
working as a nurse for 20 years, and since arriving in Bonner
County, she has worked at Kootenai Health in critical care, Bonner
General in the emergency room and labor and delivery, and at a
family health clinic in Sandpoint.
Teaching at SHS was not something that had been on Liz’s radar
until 2019, when a friend who previously taught Health Professions
classes at the school was leaving for another position and
recommended the job to Liz.
“I’ve always loved teaching, and I saw myself in the future teaching
nursing students,” Liz explained. “But I never thought I’d be at a
high school.”
During her career, Liz had done some nurse precepting—
supervising younger nurses during their clinicals—but this was her
first time teaching in a classroom setting. At first, Liz said she was
nervous, but she quickly settled into a successful Health Professions
program at SHS that has existed for more than 30 years.
Sandpoint’s Health Professions students go through a three-year
program, which begins with an “Intro to Health Professions” class
during their sophomore year.
“That is more of an introductory class to what is expected in health
occupations; what are some [career] options in health occupations,”
Liz said. “We go through everything from dentistry to veterinarian
stuff to emergency medicine, doctors, nurses—everything.”
Because many students do not know exactly what medical field
they would like to pursue, the primary goal of the introductory
course, Liz explained, is to expose her students to as many different
professions as possible, giving them the chance to begin
recognizing what their potential interests could be.
Liz said that she brings in many health professionals from
the community—such as a doctor she worked with in the
emergency room, an orthopedic surgeon, an orthodontist
or a local paramedic—as guest speakers to talk to the class
about what they do.
“I am a nurse, so [the students] get lots of nursing perspective
from me, but I like to give them perspective from all the
different health occupations,” Liz said.
In their junior year, SHS Health Professions students take
Liz’s dual-credit medical terminology class, which is very
physiology-based and overlaps nicely with the students’
other science courses.
“A lot of these kids are in anatomy and physiology at the
same time, which is great because our classes sort of marry
each other,” Liz said. “We coordinate to try and do separate
labs and make it interesting for the kids.”
Finally, students who successfully go through the first two
years of Health Professions courses and desire to continue
in the program—approximately 20 students each year—can
take a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) class during their
senior year.
Thanks to her extensive background in nursing and myriad
of connections in the Sandpoint medical community, Liz’s
CNA class goes above and beyond what the typical CNA
experience would be for students at a technical school.
“They will go to the nursing home, and they learn the basic
CNA skills,” Liz said. “Then we move to the hospital, where
they get to shadow all the different health occupations at the
hospital that they can.”
Most of Liz’s students take their CNA exam in the spring
before graduation, and those who pass leave high school in
a great position to succeed in their future medical studies
after graduation.
“If they are neck and neck with somebody applying for the
same position or the same scholarship or spot in a program,
this program [at SHS] likely will give them the leg up to be
the one that they choose,” Liz explained.
In addition to their training at the nursing home, Liz’s CNA
students can participate in SHS’ first aid response team. These
students receive first aid training from Bonner County EMS,
and they take shifts—two students per day—being on call
during the school day to help respond to first aid situations.
They are supervised by administration, who encourage the
students as they get hands-on experience diagnosing reallife
medical scenarios.
“The kids will do a full set of vital signs, they’ll have to
document what they did [and] what was happening, so it
gives them lots of workplace readiness skills related to health
care,” Liz described.
Every year, SHS’s Health Occupations Student Association
(HOSA) club—which Liz leads—travels to take part in the
state’s convention that takes place each spring. SHS students

fundraise all year to attend the convention, which consists of competitions and
seminars about everything from nursing to veterinary medicine to dentistry.
Liz had previously read about the BodyInteract software, and she noticed that
BodyInteract was holding a competition at the 2022 convention, so she signed
up all of her students to compete.
“I had read about [BodyInteract], and it was funny because I signed all the kids
up for it even though they didn’t ask,” Liz laughed.
At the competition, BodyInteract stole the show, wowing Liz’s students and
causing her to wonder how she could get the software for her own classroom.
“I just watched all these kids from all over the state work on this program to
figure out what’s wrong with this patient and make the right intervention,” Liz
remembered. “And I loved it. I thought it was so cool. The kids loved it, and they
all wanted to do it again. And I thought, ‘That is super cool.’”
Upon returning from the convention, Liz did some research about how she
could purchase the software. She came across Governor Brad Little’s “Leading
Idaho” initiative—in which a total of $8 million of funds are distributed to high
school career technical education programs across the state—and she applied
for the grant.
“I had never applied for a grant before,” Liz explained. “So, some of my colleagues
here helped me do it and proofread it for me. I applied for it and got it!”
Since receiving the software and equipment in October, Liz said her students
have enjoyed using BodyInteract in the classroom.
“[My students] love it,” Liz smiled. “They are always saying, ‘Hey, Mrs. Smith,
can we do a BodyInteract? Can we do a scenario?’”
BodyInteract runs on a 55-inch touchscreen monitor that sits on wheels,
allowing it to be positioned either horizontally or vertically and easily moved
around the classroom.
Liz appreciates that the software has different difficulty settings, which can be
tailored to the needs of her students, providing them with helpful scenarios to
test their diagnostic abilities. BodyInteract also gives Liz the opportunity to see
what areas her students are doing well in and what she might need to reinforce
or reteach.
Ultimately, while bringing in drama students to act as patients was a novel idea
that worked for a season, BodyInteract is not only a better simulator of medical
scenarios, it is a tool that will allow Liz to lead SHS’s Health Professions program
to continued growth in the future.
“It’s still pretend, but it’s more life-like and realistic,” Liz said. “I think that that
is really going to open things up and get [the students] used to dealing with this
type of technology.”

MAKING THE
MOVE
First steps to hiring a REALTOR®
by BEN GEANETTA, REALTOR®, TEAM LEAD
When my wife and I sold our first home, we had no idea what we were doing, or
even what to expect since we had never sold real estate before. The REALTOR® we
hired was recommended to us by one of my coworkers in the Police Department.
We selected him without any interviewing process or asking questions to ensure our huge
investment was in the right hands. Fortunately, we got lucky, and it worked out well; but this
isn't always the case.
Let's state the obvious: Selling your house is a big decision, as hundreds of thousands of dollars
and, in some cases, even millions can be involved. The REALTOR® you hire can make all the
difference. Their knowledge, expertise and timely communication skills should all be factors
in choosing the right individual to meet your real estate needs.
First, let me take you to a different scenario to help you put your selection process in perspective.
If you needed brain surgery, would you ultimately go with the first recommendation from a
friend or family member? Maybe you would select a friend or family member in general just
for the sake they were someone you knew. Would you go under the knife without looking
into the doctor’s background, skills or knowledge? Likely not. You would choose a doctor
who you're confident with their skills and knowledge. Your house, which is ultimately an
investment, deserves the same due diligence.
These are a few steps you should consider taking when selling your house:
First, you should get organized and collect a few names of local real estate agents. It doesn’t
matter if you find them online, see an ad, or a friend tells you their REALTOR® is the best.
Compile a list. Next, find reviews online and see what others are saying about them. Find their
bio page and read the “About me” section.
If they pass YOUR initial interview, reach out to schedule a meeting. If you don’t receive a
response from them within 48 hours, some concern should be raised.
The ultimate objective for anyone to sell their
property is to get the most favorable terms and
achieve their goals while doing so on your timeline.
Once the REALTOR® and you connect, it’s now time to schedule a
meeting. At the appointment, they should arrive with a digital or paper
presentation that highlights their marketing and their work.
Be on the lookout for how detailed and complete their presentation is.
Often, this will be a reflection of the quality of their professionalism and
a demonstration of the listings they provide. Think of the REALTOR®
as an artist and their listings as their canvas; choose the one who speaks
your language visually. Chances are if you like their work and would
buy a house based on their presentation of it, then it’s likely others
would too!
The goal is to leave a memorable, visual impression on the potential
buyers. Ask to view their past listings and pay attention to the details.
Are they using professional photo/videography, aerial photographs, 3D
tours and floor plans? Are their photos in a sequence that makes sense
as not to confuse the potential buyer as they scroll through? Are the
public remarks accurate and distinguished?
Ask to see their marketing material, and don't settle on just an
explanation. You should not be settling for what I call the “wait and
watch” response of “I’ll put a yard sign up and it will be in the MLS
which feeds Zillow, Trulia and like websites.” Do they have an integrated
marketing system? Do they use a referral network of real estate agents
across the country?
Also, it's important to ask how many buying and selling clients they are
currently working with. If they have a heavy workload, ask how much
individual attention you should expect. Are they part of a team they
regularly work with? What support staff do they have?
The ultimate objective for anyone to sell their property is to get the
most favorable terms and achieve their goals while doing so on your
timeline. Partner with the best REALTOR® for you by following the
steps outlined above.

MARKET
REPORT
While prices are correcting and slowly coming
down, overall the market is still appreciating,
according to Ben Geanetta, REALTOR® with
Team Lead. "If you’re expecting a 2008
market drop, you will be waiting a long time."
For homeowners considering selling, he
says they can still get a great price for their
house but should expect offers to trickle in.
As for buyers, now is a great time to buy.
"There is less competition, and you can refinance
your rate when they come down. Plus, with
lending programs to help with affordability, like
a 2/1 buy-down, you shouldn’t be scared off of
buying. Game plan with your agent and lender."

WORLD - CLASS REAL ESTATE PROFESSIONAL
J a c k i e S u a r e z
REAL Market Update - Brought to you by Jackie Suarez, Associate Broker
What is the current real estate market climate in North Idaho?
Winter is approaching, and along with the colder temperatures, prices continue to decrease. Higher interest
rates and motivated sellers have put additional downward pressure on pricing. While some lenders offer
solutions to buy down percentage rates, innation and the increased cost to borrow money are causing many
buyers to reconsider their decision to purchase based on affordable monthly payments.
On both sides of the real estate market, many are in a holding pattern waiting for more predictable nancial
weather. Buyers have taken advantage of their newfound leverage, sales volume increased over the past
two months and fewer owners are listing their properties for sale. With lower inventory, this is a market with
opportunity for serious sellers and buyers.
Cash buyers accounted for 39% of recent sales. *
Three tips for navigating this market:
1. Get advice from full-time real estate professionals who are experts in your local market.
2. Sellers, you now need to price your home or land competitively and focus on your presentation. Be aware
of other properties that are vying for buyers and be ready to negotiate. Devise a strategy for timing your sale
and know your next step.
3. Buyers, watch pricing and be ready to recognize a good buy. If you’re borrowing, talk to your lender about
locking your interest rate. Thoroughly inspect any property you decide to purchase.
Our market is constantly changing.
What is important to me remains the same - God, Family and Relationships.

“We decided to seek out Jackie Suarez based on the recommendation of
a colleague. It was an excellent decision. Jackie did everything I

was key and Jackie excelled in this area- just what we wanted. This made
the experience less stressful, and she also gave us the information we
needed to make informed decisions. I would definitely recommend Jackie
and I would 100% work with Jackie for any future real estate deals.”

KICK OFF THE HOLIDAY SEASON AT THIS YEAR’S
CHRISTMAS CRAFT FAIR
SANDPOINT’S FINEST HOLIDAY MARKET
by JILLIAN CHANDLER
NOVEMBER
19-20
Mark your calendar for November 19 and 20, as the annual
Christmas Craft Fair returns to the Bonner County
Fairgrounds for two days of shopping and fun.
Over the weekend, visitors will be treated to local artisans,
handmade gifts, food and treats, activities for the kids, and a
visit from Santa both days (don’t forget to get a photo too!).
“We limit the vendors to crafters and artisans only. We do not
allow commercial booths, because we want to focus on the true
nature of the name ‘craft fair,’” shares Darcey Smith, Bonner
County Fair director. “We have so many wonderful artisans in
Bonner County, and it's great to be able to bring them together
during the holidays and support their businesses. I always find
and buy the most amazing treasures.”
The Christmas Craft Fair continues to get bigger each year,
drawing between 3,000 to 4,000 visitors over the weekend.
This year, vendor spaces filled up within the first week!
Visitors to the craft fair will find these local vendors selling
a variety of crafts, gifts and food items: vintage décor and
crafts, wood signs, home décor, wreaths, ornaments, jewelry,
crocheted animals, oils/soaps/bath salts, greeting cards,
scrapbooking supplies, candles, stockings, T-shirts, tumblers
and glassware, pepper jelly, fudge, cinnamon rolls/scones/
mini pies, kettle corn, coffee and drinks. “Oh my goodness,
and so much more!” Darcey smiles.
The Gingerbread House Competition returns for its fifth year
to benefit the Bonner Community Food Bank. Those who
would like to participate can bring their completed gingerbread
house, along with two non-perishable food items (and even
those not participating are welcome to drop off food donations
as well). There is no limit on how many can participate, and
ribbons and a grand prize will be awarded.
“Our Christmas Fair is always a great treat for the public,” says
Darcey. “And there is no fee to enter!”
The Christmas Craft Fair is Sandpoint's finest Christmas
market. Make a plan to head to the Bonner County
Fairgrounds November 19 and 20. To find out more, visit

Opening Day
in Sandpoint
Brought to you by the Bonner County Historical Society & Museum
The month of November officially commences the holiday season.
While the whole country is preparing for the holidays and attending
one party after another, there is yet another day marked on all
Sandpointions’ calendars.
Opening day up at Schweitzer is a holiday in and of itself for
Sandpoint. Many citizens of this little mountain town dream of
powder, the smell of ski wax, and the Outback lodge hot cocoa the
night before. They wake up more eager than on Christmas morning
and make their way up the switchbacks to their local ski resort.
Schweitzer delighted a few outdoor enthusiasts as early as the
1930s, but it became official in 1963. Today Schweitzer has greatly
expanded and is a desired destination for many beyond the borders
of Bonner County, but in the beginning, a lift ticket cost just $3.50.

Soon we will be celebrating yet another Opening Day at Schweitzer.
