‘Old biddies’ deliver a
quality evening for kids
THE COMMUNITY rallied
together and supported a major
fundraising event to provide
educational opportunities for
children at Diamond Harbour
School.
‘Ethel & Bethel Bingo Babes’
was a night of entertainment,
delivered by the “two old
biddies” Ethel and Bethel to a
sold-out crowd at the school last
weekend.
Four Square Diamond
Harbour, Min Sarginson Real
Estate Ltd and other local
businesses supported the event
by providing prizes, products
and assistance.
The event was a 12-month
project by the Diamond Harbour
School Education Charitable
Trust.
The trust was established in
2018 to fund projects beneficial
to school children.
Its work involves seeking
sponsorship, partnering with
businesses, encouraging
donations and endowments,
and applying for grants and
Cruise ship
passengers
leave
buses at
capacity
• By Dylan Walker
BUSES FROM Lyttelton to
Christchurch have been impacted
by the return of cruise ships, with
overcrowded services having to
leave or drive past those waiting
at stops.
Cruise ships returned to
Lyttelton last Thursday, after
the Covid-19 pandemic, with
the Celebrity Eclipse bringing
thousands of tourists eager to visit
the area and the city.
According to residents, tourists
had been given the option of a
direct shuttle to the city, however,
it allegedly cost US$30 (NZ$51).
Many tourists elected to take
public buses into Christchurch
instead.
A post by Heather Reid Van
Gerwen on the Facebook group
Lyttelton Ain’t No Place I’d
Rather Be included a photo of the
crowded bus, and attracted 69
comments.
Reid Van Gerwen said the
8.40am bus didn’t leave Lyttelton
till 9am and “we just had to drive
past an elderly lady in Opawa and
an older man near Colombo St as
the bus is too full”.
Jetty art auction a huge success
• By Dylan Walker
AN ART auction selling off a unique
collection of Banks Peninsula-themed
work went “spectacularly well,”
according to organisers.
The ‘Distinctly Peninsula’ event,
designed to raise funds for the Governors
Bay jetty rebuild, was held in
Ōtoromiro Hotel on Saturday. It raised
$50,000 from the 54 art pieces sold.
Auction-goers enjoyed a glass of
bubbles and live music from Chris
Lake, and perused the silent auction
before the live auction started at 4pm.
There were around 150 to 200 people
in the live auction room.
Organisers said they “couldn’t have
done it without the generosity of the
artists who donated their works, the
enthusiastic bidders and the hard
work of the main organiser Kate Murden
and her husband Clive, who is a
talented and entertaining auctioneer”.
They previously had an exhibition
of the works at the Tannery in
Woolston, which was attended by
treasures from the past
around 400 people over five days.
Artists included Andrew Lyons,
Annie Collins, Callum Arnold,
Charrette van Eekelen, Dean Venrooy,
Diana Nicholson-Plank, Don McAra,
Fergus Lockyer, Gus Milne, Heidi
Anderson, John Barry, Joyce Gunther,
Kim Hennessy, Malcolm Robinson,
Mike White, Pammie Moonlight,
Philip Beadle, Ralph Woodward,
Renzie Hanham, Schira Withers,
Tony Eastwood and a 1949 painting
She said she caught the bus
most mornings and a lot of
people caught it to go to work
and school. None of the cruise
ship passengers had Metrocards
so “paying cash for all of them
took a long time”.
Justine Merrylees commented
that the 8.10am bus was also
“pretty full”.
A Lyttelton Port Company
spokesperson said the cruise
lines were the ones to organise
the shuttle buses, and plenty were
available should tourists need
them. They acknowledged they
were aware that some passengers
had elected to take public
transport instead.
An Environment Canterbury
representative said the capacity
issues on October 27 were likely
to be because of the bus driver
stopwork meeting, held by the
Amalgamated Workers Union
NZ, which impacted services
across Christchurch.
Elon Musk: Risking it all
by Michael Vlismas
Often in the news for his entrepreneurial exploits and his controversial tweets, Elon Musk is one of
the richest and best-known people on earth. In 2022 he made headlines worldwide with his bid
to buy Twitter. Who is this boundary-pushing billionaire with grand plans of inhabiting Mars, and
what lies at the heart of his vision? Why is he so utterly unafraid of risk?
As an awkward Pretoria schoolboy who loved comics and science fiction, Musk’s early years
and singular family background were crucial in forming his stellar ambitions. Journalist
and author Michael Vlismas, who attended the same high school as Musk, knows well the
environment that shaped him and offers new insights into Musk’s development, including his
troubled relationship with his father.
Tracing his remarkable life, from his South African childhood to his move to Canada at 17 and
then to the US – where Musk made millions out of PayPal and built Tesla and SpaceX into two of
the world’s most famous companies – this is the story of a man driven to preserve the optimism
he sees in humanity and find a future for humans ‘out there among the stars’
REPAIR CAFE: Woolston Community Library will be the first stop for The Repair Roadshow, which is a year-long project of Ōtautahi Repair Revolution to
help community hubs set up their own repair events.
Team repairing broken items on the road
• By Natalie Pham
BROKEN possessions can now
get a fresh start at the first repair
event in Woolston.
Woolston Community
Library will be the first stop of
‘The Repair Roadshow’, which
is a year-long project to help
community hubs around the city
set up their own repair event.
Ōtautahi Repair Revolution
founder Zac Imhoof said the
idea was prompted after a
conversation with Michael
Reynolds, a Woolston resident
who is behind the community
space Roimata Food Commons
in Radley Park.
Said Imhoof: “This event will
be the first and hopefully we
can gather enough volunteers
from the area that would like to
maintain it.”
He encouraged residents to
hold onto broken belongings
and bring them to the event, no
matter how odd they were.
Imhoof said volunteers have
fixed many things, including
toys, electronic gadgets, and
anything that has a battery or a
plug.
He still remembers the time
he received a $10 donation after
fixing a ukelele for a five-yearold
girl at a repair cafe.
“There was a big smile on
her face. So it was something
very special to myself and
other volunteers who have had
situations like that all the time,”
Imhoof said.
“Whether you’re a volunteer
or guest, it’s the interaction that
makes events like this special.”
Imhoof started the Ōtautahi
Repair Revolution last year, with
a goal of creating a world where
people do not buy or throw their
belongings away unconsciously.
The first event started as
a trial before becoming a
monthly session at Richmond
Community Garden. Since then,
it has had a large database of
volunteers with different levels of
experience.
But,Imhoof said more
volunteers are always needed.
They are also prompted to bring
their own project to repairing
sessions.
“It’s basically an event to bring
people together to repair. We do
ask for donations if people can,
otherwise we get funding from
the city council.”
Repair Roadshow at Woolston
Community Library will start at
2pm on November 12.
Esplanade walk
for a good cause
FANCY A STROLL along
Sumner Esplanade? Join a group
that is taking part in the Lap the
Map for diabetes.
This November, Lions Clubs
across the country are hosting
family-friendly walks to promote
a healthy lifestyle and raise funds
for diabetes awareness. The aim
is to walk a combined distance
greater than New Zealand’s
entire coastline (15,000km).
The Ferrymead Lions Club
need lots of people – you, your
family and friends – to stroll
Sumner Esplanade on Sunday
between 10am and 2pm.
Participants simply need to
register at the Cave Rock end of
the Esplanade or at the Clock
Tower. Collect a tag and stroll to
the other end, where the tag is
handed back. Or start at either
end and if you walk there and
back you will have contributed
2.5km. If you are up to the
challenge, why not do the return
trip?
We ask for a gold coin donation
to go towards Diabetes
Canterbury. Just one donation
per family, but all members can
count their walk. Kids on bikes
(but not adults please) or kids in
prams all count, certificates are
given on completion.
Diabetes Canterbury group
will be offering type 2 diabetes
assessments forms free of charge.
There will also be a raffle.
Family art in exhibition
CREATIVITY HAS often
appeared hereditary in nature,
with a combination of genes and
environment fostering artistic
ability passed down through
families.
November’s Natural Succession
exhibition at Stoddart Cottage
Gallery is a striking case
in point, presenting as it does a
retrospective of works by local
watercolourist, June Macleod,
and contemporary paintings
inspired by her from her son, the
award winning Sydney-based
artist, Euan Macleod. What’s
more, June’s father and Euan’s
grandfather, Herbert Macleod
was a master wood turner, whose
projects included work on the interior
of Christchurch Cathedral.
The exhibition provides a
retrospective of the work of
June Macleod, who was born in
Christchurch in 1931 and painted
until her 80s. After taking an
art course through the Wellington
Correspondence School as
a young mother, and studying
watercolour under respected
local painter, Joy Simmons she
went on to show her work in
many group exhibitions.
June’s main focus was landscapes,
especially those around
Arthur’s Pass. More recently, it
was those of Diamond Harbour
and Church Bay where she lived
until 2021, surrounded by the
beautiful garden that inspired
Born in Christchurch in 1956,
Euan Macleod completed a
Diploma of Fine Arts (Painting)
at the University of Canterbury,
before moving to Sydney in
1981. Throughout his career,
both Euan’s work and exhibitions
have traversed the land and
landscapes of his birthplace and
adopted home.
His work is held in public
collections ¬ from the National
Gallery of Victoria (Melbourne)
to the Metropolitan Museum,
New York – and won numerous
awards, including Australia’s
prestigious Archibald Prize.
His work has been documented
in the book, Euan Macleod—
Gregory O’Brien (Piper Press,
Pier turns 25
IT’S Christchurch’s most
photographed landmark and
Australasia’s biggest ocean pier –
and now it’s a quarter of a century
old.
Yesterday marked 25 years
since the New Brighton Pier
opened on November 1, 1997.
“It has such a rich and
interesting history, it’s great to
acknowledge this milestone,”
said city council head of parks
Andrew Rutledge.
The first wooden incarnation of
the pier opened in 1894 and was
there for 70 years. But by 1965 it
had become so rundown, the city
council had it demolished.
For the next 30 years the Pier
and Foreshore Society rallied for
another to be constructed.
The group raised almost $2
million and the city council
matched with a further $2
million, and the current
reinforced concrete pier was built.
“The pier is a real testimony
to the work of the community
who fundraised for it to be built.
Here’s to the next 25 years,”
Rutledge said.
THE LYTTELTON Harbour
and Port Levy communities will
be the first to plan for how they
can adapt to coastal hazards
caused by sea level rise.
Christchurch is more
exposed to coastal hazards than
Auckland and Wellington and
since 1995 we’ve experienced
about 15cm of sea level rise.
We are anticipating a further
17-23cm by 2050 and 52cm-1m
by 2100.
To prepare
for this the
city council
is beginning
adaptation
planning
which
involves
partnering
with mana
whenua
and working alongside the
most exposed communities to
prepare for the effects of coastal
flooding, erosion and rising
groundwater on communities,
infrastructure and the
environment.
“The timing and severity of
sea-level rise will vary across
the district and we don’t want to
take a one-size fits all approach,
so we’re starting with the
adaptation planning team leader
Jane Morgan said.
“For adaptation planning to
be meaningful, it’s crucial we
hear from residents of all ages,
so we’re encouraging people to
complete our short survey and
tell us what they value about the
area and what is most important
to them,” Morgan said.
The information gathered
will be used by the coastal
panel (made up of community
and rūnanga representatives)
to determine a short-list of
adaptation options which
the community will be able to
give feedback on next year.
There will be a series of events
on over the engagement period
which runs until December 6.
First up is a family day on
Saturday from 10am at the
Allendale Hall where residents
will be able to paint tiles with
coastal images for a local
installation, grab a free ice
cream and hear more about
how hazards will impact local
communities.
Treasures from the Past:
Flying boat Centaurus
ON THE morning of January 4,
1938, a fine rain was falling on
Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour
as thousands of people gathered
along its shorelines and wharves
to welcome the largest aeroplane
to ever visit Te Waipounamu
South Island – the flying boat
Centaurus.
Operated by British Empire
Airways in association with
the Australian Qantas Empire
Airways, the Centaurus had left
Southampton, United Kingdom,
on route to Australia, via South
East Asia some 10 days earlier, on
a survey flight to open up a new
Australasian air route.
Travelling from Darwin
through to Brisbane and on to
Sydney, she then crossed the Tasman
Sea bound for Auckland.
Commissioned by Empire
Airways in early 1935, Centaurus
was the third Empire flying boat
built by Short Brothers of Rochester.
With two levels, she could
seat 24 passengers for day travel,
or 16 night passengers with the
plush seating folded out to bunks,
and still have room for the upper
level promenade deck.
A steward’s kitchen allowed
for meals, and with five crew on
board there was still room for up
Flying boat Centaurus in Lyttelton Port, 1938
to 1.5 tons of mail and freight.
An S-23 Empire Class boat,
the Centaurus was powered by
four Bristol Pegasus Xc engines
producing 910 horsepower on
takeoff, with a maximum speed
of 320km/h at 1680m, and 740
horsepower when cruising
at 266km/h. Fully loaded she
grossed 18 tons, was 26.8m long,
9.7m high, and had a then huge
wingspan of 34.75m. With a service
ceiling of 6100m and a range
of 1220km, she helped pioneer
commercial intercontinental
flight and entered the British Aircraft
Register as G-ADUT with
her first test flight in November
1936.
Having left Auckland on the
morning of January 3, 1938, she
landed in Wellington just three
hours later, departing the following
morning for the 90 minute
flight to Ōhinehou Lyttelton,
where one of the largest crowds
to ever grace the harbour was
gathered in anticipation.
While Christchurch remained
under a low grey cloud, the
harbour weather cleared and the
sun shone brilliantly on the flying
boat as she came in across Gebbies
Pass and landed with no fuss
– or sound, due to flying into a
fresh north-easterly – just behind
Erskine Point.
With the landing being apparently
something of an anticlimax,
the first good sighting for the
crowds was when Centaurus
taxied into the inner harbour to
a mooring buoy near the Akaroa
Jetty.
When New Zealander and former
RAF pilot Captain J. Burgess
– along with his co-pilot, navigator,
flight clerk, steward and their
12 passengers – disembarked, the
assembled crowd cheered loud
and long.
With the crew hurried away by
dignitaries, the crowds remained
through the afternoon, on the
wharves and on small watercraft,
taking in the modern marvel of
this new age of intercontinental
travel.
The Centaurus would fly out
the following morning for Dunedin
and then back to Auckland to
complete its survey of the Far East
route from Britain to Australia
NEWS 11
and New Zealand. She was then
bought by Qantas in December
1938 before being commandeered
the following fateful September
by the Royal Australian Air Force.
She entered war service as A18-
10 for the No 11 Maritime Patrol
Squadron, performing armed
reconnaissance and transport
duties in and around New Guinea
and the Dutch East Indies.
The Centaurus was destroyed
while anchored at Broome harbour
in far north Western Australia,
when Zero fighters from
the Imperial Japanese Navy Air
Service based in Timor attacked,
killing 88 civilians and Allied
military personnel on March 3,
1942.
In just the 87 years to 1938
since the Canterbury Association’s
First Four Ships set sail for
Aotearoa New Zealand, the flying
boat Centaurus ushered in a new
era in transoceanic travel.
Capable of travelling that same
distance in a tenth of the time it
took the old sailing ships, and
five times faster than the modern
cruise ships of the day, the
Empire flying boats were amazing
harbingers of the modernity we
perhaps take so much for granted
today.
Snail
By Leanne Malloch
EXCITEMENT is building within the local artists who are
showcasing their art and also the Rotary Club, which is
looking forward to creating this wonderful opportunity for
the artists and being able to generate funds that will be put
to good use for the local community. It promises to be a
win-win outcome for all concerned.
Obvious thanks go to the 30+ artists providing the art
works. Also, special thanks are due to the local companies
that have provided sponsorship and raffle prizes, without
which the event would be considerably harder to organize.
Most of the artwork that will be displayed (and is for
sale) will be paintings, either watercolour or oil on canvas or
acrylic, but also prints, fused glass or blown glass. A good
cross-section of art – sure to please the most discerning
observer.
ere is also a cross-section of experience, from our wellregarded
feature artist Colin MacLaren to lesser-known
talent. As an added feature, on Saturday and Sunday local
artist Leanne Malloch will be undertaking painting on site,
and offering advice to budding artists – one of Leanne’s
works is shown alongside this editorial.
Full details of the Art Show are available on the
Ferrymead Rotary website www.ferrymeadrotary.org.nz.
FOOD 17
Stir-fry is a go-to for planning meals
Chicken chowmein
can be prepared in
many different ways,
this recipe for two is
quick and easy
2-3 minutes, until syrupy. Add
the spinach or bok choy and the
reserved vegetables. Stir-fry for 1
minute. Great served with rice.
Steamed fish with ginger
and hoisin sauce
Chicken chowmein
Ingredients
Serves 2
Serves 4
Ingredients
Noodles:
200-250g dried egg noodles
1 tbsp sesame oil
Marinade:
1 tsp sesame oil
2 tsp each: light soy sauce,
Shaoxing rice wine or dry sherry
Salt and white pepper to taste
Stir-fry:
200g skinned and boned chicken
breasts
2 tbsp rice bran oil
1 tbsp chopped garlic
50g-100g green and red capsicums
50g ham, julienned
2 tsp each: light soy sauce, dark
soy sauce
1 tbsp Shaoxing rice wine or dry
sherry
Salt and white pepper to taste
½ tsp sugar
3 tbsp finely sliced spring onions
or chives
1-2 tbsp sesame oil
Directions
Cook the noodles in a large pan
of boiling water until tender,
about 5 minutes. Drain well then
toss together with the sesame oil.
Meanwhile, combine the ingredients
for the marinade in a bowl.
Cut the chicken into chunks.
Place in the bowl and marinate
for at least 10 minutes.
Heat a wok on high. Add 1 tbsp
of rice bran oil. When hot, drain
the chicken and stir-fry in batches
until cooked, about 2 minutes.
Remove and place aside. Wipe the
wok clean.
Heat the remaining rice bran
oil. Stir-fry the garlic for 10
seconds. Add the capsicums and
the ham.
Stir-fry for 1 minute. Add the
noodles, soy sauces, rice wine,
salt, pepper, sugar and spring
onions or chives. Stir-fry for 2
minutes.
Return the chicken and any
juices to the wok. Stir-fry for
about 3 minutes, until cooked and
hot. Add the sesame oil to taste.
Great served topped with toasted
cashew nuts.
Sticky pork with
vegetables
Serves 4
Ingredients
500g lean pork
1 tbsp sesame oil
3 tbsp light soy sauce
1 tbsp each: Chinese five-spice
powder, finely grated root
ginger
2 cloves garlic, crushed
3 tbsp honey
2 tbsp rice bran oil
1 red pepper (capsicum), thinly
sliced
1 cup peas
2 cups finely sliced spinach or
bok choy
Directions
Thinly slice the pork into strips.
Combine the sesame oil, soy
sauce, five-spice powder, root
ginger, garlic and honey in a
bowl. Add the pork and mix
well. Marinate for at least 10
minutes.
Heat half the rice bran oil in
a wok on medium. Stir-fry the
red pepper and peas for 1-2
minutes, until crisp-tender. Place
aside.
Drain the pork reserving the
marinade. Stir-fry the pork in
batches in the remaining oil until
almost cooked.
Add the marinade and stir for
700-800g skinned and boned
thick white fish fillets
2 tbsp hoisin sauce
¼ cup finely julienned root
ginger
¼ tsp finely ground white pepper
2 tbsp light soy sauce
2 small spring onions (green
part only), thinly sliced
2 tbsp Shaoxing rice wine or dry
sherry
Directions
Cut the fish into serving-sized
pieces. Brush with the hoisin
sauce. Line a large steamer with
banana leaves. If the leaves are not
available, use oiled baking paper.
Add the fish in a single layer. Dot
with the hoisin sauce.
Sprinkle with the remaining
ingredients. Cover and steam
over simmering water for about 5
minutes, until cooked.
Serve immediately, topped with
sesame seeds, if preferred.
Listing no. AH6131
The architects brief was to make the most of
the water view, we think this was captured
perfectly. From the moment you walk into this
home, you feel like you are on the water!
From an exceptional vantage point, this one
owner home soon understood that this was the
place and position to be, this stunning home
combines outstanding comfort and practicality.
Designed by architects GM Design , the
property has been carefully composed to
capitalize on the incredible setting and crafted
with the utmost attention to detail for its time,
across a generous 290sqm floorplan.
The open-plan living space makes astonishing
views the backdrop to everyday living, a light
filled dining and family room with practical
timber flooring providing a warm glow in an
a large proportion of the sea view.
bedroom boasting an extraordinary view to
wake up to, or fall asleep amongst the twinkling
lights, a suitably appointed tiled ensuite
provides further comfort.
Two further double bedrooms share access to
a second bathroom, however if a fourth bedroom
is required, or a separate living area or rumpus
for the teenagers, then a further large generous
room which currently houses a pool table is
perfect for a myriad of requirements.
Well-planned storage, a separate laundry and
internal-access double garaging with flat drive
on access add to a superbly well-designed
home set on landscaped grounds. Zoned for Mt
Pleasant School and encompasses a myriad of
walking and biking trails, the lifestyle is second
to none, life never looked so good. Homes of
this caliber are all too rare, with our owners
realistic price expectations and an upside to add
further value, we urge you to act with haste.
Our owner has already purchased and although
loathe to leave this incredible home and setting,
another owner will be equally impressed and
enjoy this rare but affordable opportunity.
MG powering into EV market
IT WASN’T THE ideal start to an
evaluation.
Just one day into my time in
an MG HS PHEV Plus, a plug-in
hybrid electric sport utility vehicle,
I thought I’d take the opportunity
to boost the battery capacity at a
designated charge port.
However, I couldn’t get the key
fob to register and was scratching
my head wondering what to do
next when a kind Nissan Leaf
owner, who had pulled up beside
me, offered his fob to charge the
MG as well as his car. That was
fine until 50min later when it was
time for me to leave I discovered I
needed his fob to release the MG
from the charger. There was no
sign of my Samaritan and I was
trapped plugged in and attached to
the charge port.
After much detective work, I
managed to locate the Leaf owner
and he came back some time later
to release his car and the MG.
Lesson learnt there – make sure the
fob is registered to all charge point
providers.
If you’ll pardon the pun,
the long-standing brand MG
is powering into our market
with electric vehicles and plugin
hybrids, supply is relatively
plentiful and all models are priced
for affordability.
MG has the fully electric ZS,
a small sport utility vehicle that
I’m about to drive soon, it sits
alongside the HS PHEV SUV a car
one-step bigger. At 4.5m the HS sits
in the mid-size market and has all
the benefits an electric motor and
petrol engine can provide.
What’s more, the HS PHEV
is priced so that those who are
heading in the eco-friendly
direction can do so without
breaking the bank – the HS is here
in two specifications Excite and
Essence that list at $51,990 and
$55,990 respectively, the evaluation
car was the latter, and it is fully
functional and equipped with a
high range of specification.
Before you do the maths,
take into account as well the
Government will open its purse
and refund you $5750 on both
as part of its clean car rebate
programme. It gets even better
from there, MG’s prices include on
road costs, seven year warranty,
seven year roadside assistance
and seven year warrant of fitness
checks.
What’s more, you are buying into
a very well recognised brand, there
are many who will buy an MG
solely as a way of reconnecting with
the nameplate they have known as
desirable during the heady days of
English sports cars, convertibles
and reliable sedans.
Even though development
work and design is carried out in
SMOOTH LINES: The MG HS PHEV has traditional sport
utility vehicle characteristics, practicality has been a
manufacturing priority.
MG HS PHEV: Plug-in and charge up, cover a distance of 63km without using petrol.
the United Kingdom, MG today
is owned and operated out of
the giant Shanghai Automotive
Industry Corporation in China.
SAIC is a well-established
conglomerate that has had
connections with General Motors,
Volkswagen and a number of heavy
vehicle manufacturers.
Those who are working in the
Christchurch MG dealership are
passionate about the product, and
the brand has a high profile in the
city, you can tell that things are
ticking over nicely for MG here,
there are a healthy number on our
roads and the dealership is busy.
In terms of the HS PHEV’s
drive system, it is not so difficult
to explain. In EV mode the HS is
powered by a 16.6kWh lithium-ion
battery, its high rating will give you
range, according to the distributors
up to 63km between charges. In
normal EV fashion charging can
be done in two ways, but you will
need two different cables. One is a
type 2 to type 2 that I used at a DC
rapid charging point taking about
45min to charge from low to 80 per
cent.
The other is a three-pin cable
that can be plugged in from a
domestic supply, MG claims an
estimated five hours to fully charge.
The HS PHEV also has a fourcylinder
turbocharged petrol
engine. Its capacity is 1.5-litre and
is rated at 119kW and 250Nm,
healthy figures that sure provide
• Price – MG HS PHEV Plus,
$55,990
• Dimensions – Length,
4574mm; width, 1876mm;
height, 1664mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
front-wheeldrive,
1490cc, 119kW
(+90kW), 250Nm
(+230Nm), continuously
variable automatic
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 6.9sec
• Fuel usage – 1.7l/100km
solid momentum. Add in the
90kW and 230Nm from the
electric motor and you have a
powerful driveline combination
that will send you to 100km/h from
a standstill in 6.9sec. It will also
complete a highway overtake in
5.6sec (80-120km/h).
The power flow is instant, when
charged, the electric motor will
give you most of the impetus,
petrol power takes on largely a
back-up role. When activated it is
rather dynamic, although it makes
its presence known in a quiet and
orderly fashion.
My daughter took ill while on a
field trip and I had to make a hasty
trip to the shores of Lake Ellesmere
to get her medical attention.
On that journey the HS PHEV
dispensed the kilometres with
little fuss, it is quiet and smooth.
None of that is a surprise given the
mechanicals aren’t under a great
deal of load.
A couple of tight corners
on those roads were dealt to
with balance and stability
underneath. The suspension is fully
independent and it is engineered
with a certain amount of firmness
that exudes a dynamic feel. The
high grade variant gets wheels
an inch in diameter larger than
the entry model, and the 235/50
x 18in Michelin tyres offer a
surefootedness and steering feel
that is quite involving.
More importantly is MG’s fuel
usage claim. Rated at 1.7-litres
per 100km, the HS PHEV can
only achieve that at best possible
usage. My sudden excursion
to Southbridge did little to
enhance economy, but I did take
the evaluation car back to the
dealership showing just 4.5l/100km
on the readout that I thought was
respectable and is something that
can surely be improved with a
light throttle and sensible driving
behaviour.
There’s no doubt about the
success of MG in New Zealand
at present, after years with little
product in our market it’s a brand
that has had major resurgence in
recent years. There’s good choice
between petrol only and hybrid
or electric, which is a part of the
market that has taken off with a
hiss and a roar in recent times.
has motoring covered!
