‘Garden to plate’ community
project ready for handover
A NEW garden in St Albans will
be handed to the community to
care for and enjoy at a celebration
event tomorrow.
Mairehau Community
Garden was designed with the
community, led by The Green
Lab and Neighbourhood Trust
with “a garden to plate” vision
driving the design.
Said NHT community
development worker Don
Benn: “This garden is a place
for connection, for building
relationships with others in
the community, for gaining
skills in gardening, in cooking
in season, and in preserving and
bottling food, when we have
excess.”
The garden will feature a
polytunnel, covered seating
area, raised beds, composting
station and pollinator-friendly
planting.
Artists Storm and Cara Waiwai
also created a mural for the onsite
container.
A donation of $10,000 from
Hummingbird Coffee was used
to help assist with labour costs,
buying plants, and installing a
mains water supply.
Construction works started
in May after the final plan was
signed off by the Community
Steering Committee and the
Neighbourhood Trust in late
March this year.
Many volunteers were involved
in the building process, with
one working bee saw 18m3 of fill
moved in less than two hours by
a group of 17.
The Green Lab build lead Tom
Phillpotts said he did not expect
to get the works done so fast.

Family fun carnival a
Halloween success story
THE ANNUAL Halloween trickor-treating
alternative event has
proven to be another success with
a crowd of more than 750 people.
‘Family Fun Night’ at Grace
Vineyard in New Brighton was
buzzing on Monday, with lots of
carnival style games, inflatables,
facepainting, youth bands, photobooth,
a disco room and a show
by Elgregoe the magician.
This is the 10th year Youth
Alive Trust has been running the
event.
Said trust manager James Ridpath:
“Some parents feel awkward
knocking on strangers’ doors, but
their kids want candies and lollies
like their friends.
“So we said they could come
over here, playing games and getting
candies.”
The event has received positive
feedback from parents.
Said mother Gabrielle Mary-
Rose: “Thank you so much for
the fantastic event tonight. It was
extremely well thought-out and
everyone was so friendly. My
children had the best time.”
Father Hugues Terrier agreed,
saying it was an amazing event.
“So nice to have successful
events like this taking place
in New Brighton. It’s a great
contribution to our community
and for our kids,” he said.
FIESTA: Aidan Jalrivus Waiariki practised his driving skills in
one of the many carnival style-games on offer.
ACTIVITIES: Junior members wore traditional tennis
whites for the 100th jubilee celebration.
Tennis club turns 100
THE NORTH Beach Tennis
Club celebrated its centenary
with a jubilee on the weekend.
More than 30 junior members
dressed up in their whites to
participate in Sunday morning’s
ceremony, which was filled with
activities on the courts run by
coach Di Hubrick, and ended
with party food and drinks.
Senior members also dressed
in whites with many wearing
new club polo-shirts produced
especially for the anniversary.
They later played in a friendly
competition over the afternoon
for the club centennial cup.
Said president Derek Purver:
“We were fortunate some of
those older members were there
to enjoy this historical moment
of the club.”
Many past members were
also there for the cake cutting,
performed by the eldest club
member Peter Thorpe and
the youngest member Hugo
Kennedy, who was three.
Thorpe has been at the club
for more than 64 years and is
the patron and a life member.
The club has about 47
senior members and 53 junior
members with numbers
remaining stable over recent
years.

The Green Lab director Khye
Hitchcock said the feedback was
clear at the outset.
“The community wanted a
welcoming space that would
provide hands-on learning
experiences.
“There are definitely some
experienced gardeners in the
community who wish to share
their skills with others, which
is wonderful. The final design
reflects this. The polytunnel will
allow for year-round activities.
We’re hoping lots of different
groups can come and learn about
growing kai here.”
The project also received
support from a number of
community-minded partners,
including the city council,
Hummingbird Coffee, Richmond
Community Garden, and
Canterbury Community Gardens
Association.
‘Overwhelming’ turnout for
community garden open day

AFTER MONTHS of planning,
more than 25 volunteers were
ready to kick-start the open day
at New Brighton Community
Garden.
But they did not expect a
crowd of close to 1000 people.
Garden funding manager
Lin Klenner said the number
of participants exceeded her
expectation.
“I was overwhelmed. The support
from people loving the garden
was amazing to hear. People
would come up to our volunteers
and compliment the garden. To
someone who spends a lot of
time here, it means a lot.”
About $7000 was raised
through the sales of seedlings
and other products sold at the
event within three hours.
Six packs of seeds for $3 was
particularly popular among
guests as they were affordable,
Klenner said.
“Our strategy is for people to
be able to grow things and afford
them. The food was $5 for a
pizza, $5 for a tortilla, coffee and
tea were also $5 so it was very
affordable for families.”

after the garden was closed to the
public to help with tidying up.
“Our seedlings are nursed up
from seed stage by our amazing
volunteers and there is so much
love and care going into these,
the knowledge they are out
there and all found a good home
and providing nutrition-dense
food for our community in
these times is just very heartwarming,”
Klenner said.

Stir-fry is a go-to for planning meals
Chicken chowmein
can be prepared in
many different ways,
this recipe for two is
quick and easy
2-3 minutes, until syrupy. Add
the spinach or bok choy and the
reserved vegetables. Stir-fry for 1
minute. Great served with rice.
Steamed fish with ginger
and hoisin sauce
Chicken chowmein
Serves 2
Ingredients
Noodles:
200-250g dried egg noodles
1 tbsp sesame oil
Marinade:
1 tsp sesame oil
2 tsp each: light soy sauce,
Shaoxing rice wine or dry sherry
Salt and white pepper to taste
Stir-fry:
200g skinned and boned chicken
breasts
2 tbsp rice bran oil
1 tbsp chopped garlic
50g-100g green and red capsicums
50g ham, julienned
2 tsp each: light soy sauce, dark
soy sauce
1 tbsp Shaoxing rice wine or dry
sherry
Salt and white pepper to taste
½ tsp sugar
3 tbsp finely sliced spring onions
or chives
1-2 tbsp sesame oil
Directions
Cook the noodles in a large pan
of boiling water until tender,
about 5 minutes. Drain well then
toss together with the sesame oil.
Meanwhile, combine the ingredients
for the marinade in a bowl.
Cut the chicken into chunks.
Place in the bowl and marinate
for at least 10 minutes.
Heat a wok on high. Add 1 tbsp
of rice bran oil. When hot, drain
the chicken and stir-fry in batches
until cooked, about 2 minutes.
Remove and place aside. Wipe the
wok clean.
Heat the remaining rice bran
oil. Stir-fry the garlic for 10
seconds. Add the capsicums and
the ham.
Stir-fry for 1 minute. Add the
noodles, soy sauces, rice wine,
salt, pepper, sugar and spring
onions or chives. Stir-fry for 2
minutes.
Return the chicken and any
juices to the wok. Stir-fry for
about 3 minutes, until cooked and
hot. Add the sesame oil to taste.
Great served topped with
toasted cashew nuts.
Sticky pork with
vegetables
Serves 4
Ingredients
500g lean pork
1 tbsp sesame oil
3 tbsp light soy sauce
1 tbsp each: Chinese five-spice
powder, finely grated root
ginger
2 cloves garlic, crushed
3 tbsp honey
2 tbsp rice bran oil
1 red pepper (capsicum), thinly
sliced
1 cup peas
2 cups finely sliced spinach or
bok choy
Directions
Thinly slice the pork into strips.
Combine the sesame oil, soy
sauce, five-spice powder, root
ginger, garlic and honey in a
bowl. Add the pork and mix
well. Marinate for at least 10
minutes.
Heat half the rice bran oil in
a wok on medium. Stir-fry the
red pepper and peas for 1-2
minutes, until crisp-tender. Place
aside.
Drain the pork reserving the
marinade. Stir-fry the pork in
batches in the remaining oil until
almost cooked.
Add the marinade and stir for

fish in a single layer. Dot with the
hoisin sauce.
Sprinkle with the remaining
ingredients. Cover and steam
over simmering water for about 5
minutes, until cooked.
Serve immediately, topped with
sesame seeds, if preferred.

Welcome back to a very busy Term 4. A reminder that our focus will be
Strategic Planning - 2023
The Board met on Saturday, 29 October to discuss the kura’s strategic goals for
2023.
The Education Review Office (ERO) has provided the Board with a
summary statement of their initial impressions. Most affirming was the team’s
acknowledgement that significant progress has been made since 2019 and that one
of the key strengths identified was the collective commitment and vision to improving
outcomes for learners.
Ākonga leadership selection 2023
I was impressed listening to our ākonga leadership aspirants speaking in assembly last
week about their aims and goals for themselves, our ākonga and Haeata. We have
some amazing rangatahi with incredible leadership potential and it will be exciting
to see them grow into these leadership roles in 2023 and beyond. The successful
candidates will be announced at senior prize giving on Thursday, 10 November 2022
at 1.00pm
Attendance
The Government’s focus on improving attendance rates for all ākonga across the
motu underpins our new attendance initiative, it is pleasing to note that the project is
having a significant positive impact on the attendance rates of many ākonga affected
by COVID-19 lockdown interruptions. Some ākonga who were initially sitting on
23% attendance in the first half of the year now sit at 93%. We are very proud of
their commitment to kura and ako.
Uniform
Uniform continues to be a challenge particularly in our senior kura. We ask that
whānau support the kura to ensure that all ākonga wear our uniform with pride.
Orders are taken online and assistance is readily available given these tough

Community garden
benefits New Brighton
The New Brighton Gardens, established
in 2005, by a forward thinking group of
locals has grown from strength to strength
and has become an intergenerational hub
of activity.
Gardens Manager Catherine O‘Neill
has been with the gardens since 2010 and
seen first hand the demand for knowledge
in how to grow food soar. Food security,
with the rising cost of living, and the
understanding of the benefit organic
nutrient dense food has seen Community
Gardens skyrocket around
the Garden City having 52 of
the 200 Community Gardens
established throughout the
country. O‘Neill’s vision for
Christchurch is to become
the first edible Garden City,
or at least turn Brighton
into the first edible
suburb.

Gardens breathe
sustainability, with
composting now
being one of the
hot topics and most
popular courses.
The gardens offer a 10 Week School
program which covers sustainability
in a hands on approach from growing
and cooking with your own produce to
teaching ways to reducing waste. Funding
Manager and Sustainability Outreach
Coordinator Lin Klenner says the financial
support the gardens received from the
ccc sustainability fund was crucial to the
program and meant more students could
participate, with cost not being a barrier.
The gardens commitment to teaching
sustainability received an
extra boost in the form
of a donation of 1640 full
sized Ethique concentrates
valued at $20,000.
“We are still in disbelief,” Klenner says,
“as part of our school program, we explore
with our students different options in daily
life to reduce our environmental footprint.
Shampoo bars have become a favourite
example of how to make a big impact with
one little change.”
Klenner says, “it’s not about becoming
a zero waste influencer for a year but the
little changes we all can make and maintain
like by using a shampoo bar is a good start,
and a change we can all make.”
Everyone is welcome to work the
gardens for as little or as long as they want.
If visitors work for a minimum of 2 hours a
week, they will receive some free veggies!
The gardens are located in the reserve
and the garden’s car park is the first left
after you go through the gates of Rawhiti
Domain.
Opening hours are 10am to 4pm on
Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Also
Saturday 10am -2pm.
A wide range of courses are held (and
will be held) in the garden’s centre - a large
room with kitchen and toilet facilities.
Courses are held both inside and outside
their regular opening hours.
