‘Second in the table, leading
scorers, players worth
£275,000 in their side – those
are the credentials which
Queen’s Park Rangers bring
to Ashton Gate today. It is not
surprising therefore that they
are considered favourites,
along with Burnley and Aston
Villa, for a Division One place
next season.
‘Defeats at Blackpool and Hull
City have been the side’s only
reverses in 16 games, in which
they have scored 31 goals. Nine
of those goals have come from
Don Givens, who cost £40,000
when he signed from Luton
Town during the summer.
‘Givens was the first of three
signings made possible by the
sale, last March, of Rodney
Marsh to Manchester City
for £200,000. In September,
Rangers handed over £110,000
to Carlisle United for Stan
Bowles and, only last month,
stunned the soccer world by
signing Burnley’s midfield star
Dave Thomas for £165,000.
‘Thomas seemed destined for
a First Division club and, the
way Rangers have set about
their League task this season,
he could well achieve his
ambition very quickly.’
