Putting their lives on the 

line to save ours - for free 

Volunteer firefighters 

are on the frontline 

of firefighting. We 

depend on them 

for the safety of our 

communities, but 

we sometimes forget 

what it costs them.

every second counts when lives 

are on the line. 

Mahon is a senior volunteer 

firefighter at Anzac Station in 

New Brighton, and has been 

there for four years. He’s one 

of more than 11,500 volunteer 

firefighters in the country, 

saving lives without being 

paid. 

The garage he’s walking into is 

part of the station, but with an 

added smoke machine. This is a 

regular training exercise, one of 

many the volunteer firefighters 

do every week to stay sharp

While they may be rescuing 

a dummy filled with sand, they 

take training seriously. 

As Mahon says: “We never 

know when we’ll be required to 

rescue a human.” 

In the station meeting room 

alongside three of his volunteer 

brigade comrades, Mahon was 

calm and reserved. 

Staying calm, he said, is 

essential. At any moment 

he could be called to a local 

emergency. He needs to stay 

ready to be in gear and out the 

door of the station within five 

minutes or less. 

The other volunteer qualified 

firefighters in the room – 

Malachi Batchelor, Ryan Haines 

and Yogen Pillay – are in the 

same boat. Batchelor, Haines 

and Mahon are self-employed 

in the area, with the flexibility 

to drop everything when 

their pager goes off. Pillay is 

a full-time student and works 

part-time. The above training 

exercise was on his birthday.

The former Chisnallwood Intermediate 

School pupil started 

the project last year after realising 

there were no community 

gardens near his school. 

Since then, he has been working 

with volunteers to grow a 

range of vegetables, including 

broccoli, cabbages and silverbeet. 

Jordan said he has received 

a lot of support from the 

community and local businesses. 

This year, a water tank, a 

compost bin, a wheelbarrow, 

a shed, and a sign board were 

donated.

Volunteer firefighting ‘all about 

giving back at the end of the day’

pulling you both ways, you’ve 

got to put food on the table but 

you also want to serve your 

community. There have been a 

few sleepless nights.” 

Anzac Station is the 

only composite station in 

Christchurch. This means it 

houses both volunteer and career 

firefighters, sharing the same 

building and resources. Career 

firefighters live in rooms on 

site, and are paid for their work. 

Volunteers do it in addition to 

their regular lives, without pay. 

Mahon believes it’s more 

rewarding firefighting for free, 

doing it of your own volition. 

The New Brighton Volunteer 

Fire Brigade currently has 15 

active members, including 

recruits, with half of those being 

self employed. 

Ninety-nine per cent of the 

callouts the volunteer firefighters 

attend are with their professional 

colleagues; they are primarily 

sent out to support them or when 

they are busy elsewhere. 

In August, firefighters all 

around the country took strike 

action for an hour on two days, 

as part of a protest during 

negotiations with Fire and 

Emergency New Zealand and 

the New Zealand Professional 

Firefighters Union. 

The action was in response to 

concerns about pay, gear and 

truck quality, as well as staffing 

shortages. Many are working 

overtime and feeling the mental 

strain. 

The New Brighton Volunteer 

Fire Brigade supports its peers, 

and believes all public services 

should have safe staffing levels. 

FENZ and the NZPFU have 

been in mediated negotiations, 

and cancelled strike action 

earlier this week. However, they 

have more strikes planned for 

tomorrow and Monday. 

For some firefighters, their 

reason to volunteer is personal. 

Mahon lost a friend to a 

motorcycle accident. He was on 

the side of the road with him 

when he died. Not being able to 

help was a catalyst, encouraging 

him to complete training so he’s 

ready to help out wherever and 

whenever he can. 

Pillay said: “That’s the worst 

feeling, being helpless.” 

For firefighters, their local 

community is vital. It’s where 

they spend most of their time, 

both in and out of uniform, and 

they need to be trusted. 

Mahon and Haines are following 

in the footsteps of their 

fathers, who were firefighters for 

32 and 36 years respectively. 

“Volunteering is like gaining 

an extra family, you make 

so many life friends from it. 

Basically any help you need, all 

you’ve gotta do is ask. They will 

be there for you,” said Mahon. 

When asked about how much 

free time they had, all four of 

them laughed. With their regular 

jobs, training and being on call, 

free time is rare. They get the occasional 

weekend off with cover, 

but with reduced numbers at the 

moment they’re having to stay on 

duty more often. 

Firefighters have to have their 

clothes and boots folded next to 

their bed when they go to sleep, 

in case of an emergency alert, 

‘I’ve pulled a boy out of a house fire myself, and he ended 

up passing. He was the same age as my daughter. It 

brings it into perspective’ – Shaun Mahon 

Haines said. Gear, keys, all in a 

set place for when it counts. 

Mahon suggested people 

should try setting their alarm for 

2am, get up as soon as it goes off, 

get dressed and run out the front 

door. He said “It’s not a good 

feeling.” 

Considering how many 

emergencies and traumatic situations 

firefighters respond to, 

maintaining good mental health 

is paramount. 

The firefighters mentioned an 

incident in September, when they 

were called to a seven-month-old 

child who was choking. They 

were returning from a different 

callout when they heard on 

the radio about the baby and 

turned around. 

Thankfully, by the time they 

got there, the baby had started

breathing again. The firefighters 

performed a safety check and 

waited with the parents until the 

ambulance arrived. 

It’s for situations like these 

they keep teddy bears in the fire 

truck, to give to parents and 

young children to help them 

calm down in times of stress. 

For most people, a traumatic 

incident like a large fire, a suicide 

attempt or a medical emergency 

is a once-in-a-lifetime event. 

Firefighters are going to one 

every second week. 

“I think people would be surprised 

at how much we actually 

see,” said Batchelor. 

Mahon said: “I’ve pulled a boy 

out of a house fire myself, and 

he ended up passing. He was 

the same age as my daughter. It 

brings it into perspective.” 

He sometimes relies on dark 

humour, which “sounds bad, but 

sometimes it’s the only way to 

get through it”. 

The fighters acknowledged 

they do have good support systems, 

to make sure everyone is 

alright and to identify stress and 

mental health issues. FENZ provides 

support through dedicated 

staff should they need it, but the 

volunteers find the first step and 

most permanent form of support 

is other firefighters, since most 

of the time they were at the same 

event. 

Batchelor said quite often 

a firefighter might be beating 

themselves up, asking themselves 

“What did I do wrong, what 

could I have done better?” and 

that’s when another firefighter 

will step in and say “You did 

everything right, there’s nothing 

you could have done.” 

After organising, running and 

debriefing the training, Mahon 

spent time cleaning up the gear. 

He had a moment of peace, 

washing a breathing-assist mask. 

For a brief second, he worried 

slightly less about the potential 

of a callout. 

“Training’s always hard. We 

try to make it real,” he said. 

Volunteer firefighters make up 

85 per cent of all firefighters in 

New Zealand. It’s inconceivable 

how many lives they’ve saved. 

Across the country, they’re sacrificing 

their time, mental wellbeing 

and family commitments, 

all to be constantly vigilant and 

ready. 

Haines said: “It’s not all about 

running in and spraying cold 

stuff on hot stuff.” 

Mahon said: “It’s about giving 

back, at the end of the day.”

Craft store to close

VOLUNTEERS are 

disappointed with the decision 

to close a community shop in 

Dallington after 22 years of 

operation. 

Gretchen Sheehan said ever 

since she became a volunteer 

at the Dallington Craft Shop 

15 years ago, she has donated 

crocheted and knitted garments 

to the shop or other charities. 

“The biggest downfall of the 

whole thing is that there is no 

other space that the community 

could go to,’’ she said. 

While her works will still go 

to other charities, Sheehan said 

she will miss talking and seeing 

the people. 

“I’d say 90 per cent of our 

volunteers live alone and at least 

90 per cent are over 60. So we’re 

not young people who can go do 

volunteer work at other places.” 

For many years, the shop 

relied on the funding the Dallington 

Community Trust received 

from the Waitai Coastal- 

Burwood Community Board, 

now Waitai Coastal-Burwood- 

Linwood. 

However, trust chairperson 

David Collins said the grant has 

declined over the year. 

“Last year, the grant dropped 

to $9000. This year, it dropped 

again to $7500. But the total 

operation cost of the trust, 

including the shop, [are close to]

other option but to close the 

shop. 

But this decision means the 

trust will still be able to maintain 

other community events, 

including Christmas hunts and 

street barbecues. 

“We feel that we’re more likely 

to get more funding for projects 

where there are definitive outcomes 

than for the operating 

cost of a shop,’’ he said. 

“At the moment, we’re desperate 

for fresh trustees to help with 

organising more community 

events.” 

Collins encouraged the 

community to visit the shop and 

have a chat with the volunteers 

before it permanently closes next 

year.

THREE MOTHERS are attempting 

to make Christchurch the best city 

to be in as a child. 

A permanent space for children 

to enjoy theatre experiences is 

what Burwood’s Melanie Luckman, 

Waltham’s Hannah 

Wheeler and Edgeware’s Amy 

Straker have been hoping for. 

The mothers behind Cubbin 

Theatre Company have hosted 

more than 90 performances to 

thousands of children under five 

across the city. 

They are now in the second 

stage of applying for a $280,000 

grant from the Ministry for 

Culture and Heritage for their 

project Ōtautahi Children’s Performing 

Arts Initiative. 

This round requires public 

feedback on the project, which 

will close on Sunday. 

A decision on the next stage 

will be made in late December. 

Then, the team will need to go 

through two more rounds before 

knowing whether it will receive 

the funding. 

If approved, the grant will go 

towards securing a lease, creating 

workshops for parents and artists, 

and providing high-quality 

performances. 

It all started four years ago 

after mother-of-two Luckman 

realised there were no artistic 

experiences offered for the underfive 

age group. 

Being a theatre director, 

she discussed the idea with 

experienced actors Straker and 

Wheeler. 

Said Luckman: “We have a really 

strong vision for wanting highquality 

works for under five.”

New scholarship aims to encourage more 

women into the sustainability sector 

A NEW scholarship, offered 

through Ara Institute of 

Canterbury – Te Pukenga and 

Fife Foundation, is expected 

to provide a huge incentive for 

young women to take on study 

in the sustainability and outdoor 

education sphere. 

The scholarship, available 

for the first time for study at 

Ara in 2023, will cover full fees 

($25,000) for a woman enrolling 

in the Bachelor of Sustainability 

and Outdoor Education. 

Te Ako me Te Tiaki i Te Taiao 

sustainability and outdoor 

education manager, Dave Irwin 

said it’s the most significant 

scholarship Ara offers, and 

demonstrates future thinking in 

action. 

“I am thrilled that this 

scholarship is targeted at women. 

While sustainability is everyone’s 

business, women have unequally 

borne the brunt of unsustainable 

practices globally – be it 

through scarcity of food, rising 

costs, inequity, or social justice 

prejudice,” he said. 

Founded by Gina Satterthwaite 

and taking its name from her 

grandmother, Fife Foundation 

is a not-for-profit entity that 

aims to help people live happier, 

healthy lives while benefiting our 

planet.

“Sustainability is all about 

working together, collaborating 

and networking. It’s clear 

our traditional patriarchal 

way of doing things in siloed, 

segmented and competitive 

ways simply doesn’t work, and 

as we move into the future, 

relationships are going to be 

critical,” he said. 

Gina Satterthwaite agreed. 

“We seek to be collaborative 

as it’s so much more powerful 

than working alone. It gives us 

the chance to have a longer reach 

and make a greater impact.” 

Satterthwaite said the 

scholarship is a tangible way to 

act locally with hopes for global 

outcomes – specifically working 

to address the imbalance that 

exists for women at governance 

and board levels. 

“My hopes for this scholarship 

are that it breaks barriers for 

a passionate young woman 

wanting to study, grow and 

contribute at a high level in the 

sustainability sphere,” she said. 

Satterthwaite has a personal 

connection to the course with 

daughter Georgia, who is also 

involved with Fife Foundation, 

nearing completion of Ara 

– Te Pūkenga’s Bachelor of 

Sustainability and Outdoor 

Education. The course provided 

a natural tertiary study fit for 

Georgia, who grew up rurally 

and has a drive to protect the 

environments she loves. 

“Together we share a 

passion for the environment, 

land and oceans, and a huge 

sense of responsibility to care 

for the spaces we all enjoy,” 

Satterthwaite said. 

Irwin said the study of 

sustainability has struggled 

to gain traction in the tertiary 

sector, but the new scholarship 

shows Ara is ready to lead a shift 

in thinking, incentive, and focus. 

“When we think about the 

fast rate of change the world is 

facing – be it in terms of climate, 

biodiversity or the gap between 

rich and poor – it needs big, 

concerted efforts to halt that 

trajectory. This relationship is 

one. Fife Foundation is ready to 

act and as an organisation we too 

are showing that we’re prepared 

to invest heavily in this vital 

space.
