FROM THE
Editor
The domestic season gets ready to take a step back after this weekend’s
action, but full focus is on a test against Watford before the World Cup takes
centre stage.
The Hornets have been buzzing around
the play-offs of late, heading to BS3
with five wins from their last seven
games - six in ten since Slaven Bilić
took charge.
Of course he needs time to settle in
but the former Croatian national side
manager certainly brings experience
and credentials to a side chasing
immediate promotion back to the top
flight.
City find themselves nine points off
Saturday’s visitors and licking their
wounds after defeat to Lincoln City on
Tuesday - a disappointing end in the
Carabao Cup.
Had we beaten the Imps, it would
have cemented our place in the
competition’s Fourth Round for the first
time since 2017/18, however no such
inspiration rubbed off on the night.
Now the side returns to Ashton Gate
looking for a positive end to this first
half of the season. You will notice
poppy sellers around the ground today,
>4 THE ROBINS WATFORD
Good afternoon and welcome to this final game of
the Championship before the mid-season World Cup
break.
We have a big test against Slaven Bilić’s Watford on
Saturday, a team which has aspirations of returning to
the Premier League after their relegation last season.
After a defeat to Coventry at the weekend, they
overcame Reading on Tuesday night, while we exited
the Carabao Cup in disappointing fashion against
Lincoln City.
While our substitutes made an impact, we were poor
in both boxes and got what we deserved on the night -
collectively we weren’t good enough.
We have been missing important players and I hope
we can come back fresh and energised once the
World Cup is completed.
Right now it’s about who is up for the challenge, who
has the ability to perform under pressure and we all
want to see a positive performance on Saturday with
the fight and character we know we have.
To have the league season put on hold is
unprecedented but we will use it as a positive
opportunity.
LEAGUE SEASON PUT ON
EDENTED BUT WE WILL USE
SITIVE OPPORTUNITY.
There will be a chance to reflect on and analyse what
has gone well and where we know we must improve.
Without two or three competitive matches in the
space of a week there will be an opportunity for the
players to have some downtime but also some more
time on the training pitches before we tackle the
second half of the season when the Championship
resumes in December.
Thank you for all your support this season. Enjoy the
game and the World Cup.
Cheers,
Nige.
It’s been the yo-yo years with Watford recently, who have jumped
between the Premier League and the Championship, and they’re now
competing for an instant return to the top flight again.
They’ve not played outside of the
top two divisions since 1998 and
after establishing themselves as
a regular Championship outfit, the
Hornets managed five consecutive
years in the Premier League
between 2015-2020.
Despite bouncing back
immediately in 2020/21, it was a
dismal top flight campaign last
term with just six wins in total.
They only managed 10 points in
the new year, suffering crushing
5-1 defeats to Manchester City
and Leicester City in the process,
before eventual relegation was
confirmed.
A mixed start to the 2022/23
season led to former Forest Green
Rovers manager Rob Edwards
departing Vicarage Road. They
mustered three wins from their
first 10 games, as well as a
Carabao Cup exit to MK Dons.
But they’ve picked up form of late
and head to BS3 with four wins
from their last five games under
Slaven Bilić. Their latest was a
2-0 midweek win over Reading
which fired Bilić’s men back into
the top six, just weeks after finding
themselves in the bottom half of
the table.
Midfielder Imran Louza remains
absent with a broken leg, meaning
he misses the World Cup finals
with Morocco. “He is a player that
is hard or impossible to replace,”
said Bilić, who is also without club
captain Tom Cleverley (Achilles)
until February. William Troost-
Ekong takes up the armband with
Cleverley missing from the starting
XI.
Senegal forward Ismaïla Sarr is
expected to feature, despite media
rumours the player may not want
to risk injury before his nation’s
World Cup squad is finalised.
The Brazilian’s brace in midweek earned Watford the
three points against the Royals, taking his tally to
six for the season. His first on Tuesday came from
the penalty spot before his half-volley in the latter
stages put the result beyond doubt.
Pedro joined Watford in 2020 as an 18-year-old,
making his debut in the FA Cup against Tranmere on
January 4th, and his Premier League debut against
Southampton in June. He then had a 19th birthday to
remember in September as he scored his first goal for
the club in the derby against Luton Town.
His career started at Fluminense where he rose up the
youth ranks, initially as a defensive midfielder before
becoming an attacking midfielder and eventually a
forward.
Only 21 years old, Pedro has now made 90
appearances for the Hornets, scoring 19 goals in all
competitions, of which he scored four goals in 31
appearances in the Premier League.
INTERVIEW
Cam Pring
>14 THE ROBINS WATFORD
Cameron Pring feels he still has a point to prove and is already planning
on a strong second half of the season, once the team returns to action
after the World Cup.
The 24-year-old has made eight
appearances in all competitions,
having needed to be patient at
the start of the season after a
pre-season hampered by injury
recovery.
However, Pring has played the full
90 minutes in each of City’s last
three Championship games and is
keen to kick on.
He said: “I’ve grown into the team
again with more games under my
belt and the more you play, the
appearance in our last league
match at Ashton Gate against
Sheffield United. “It feels good,” he
said. “I just want to play as much as
possible and hopefully hit another
100 pretty soon.”
The next opportunity to add to his
tally comes on Saturday against
Watford.
“They’re good on the ball and will
want to move us around,” said
Pring, previewing the final fixture
before the break. “They’re pacey but
WE HAVE TO KEEP
WORKING, PICK
OURSELVES UP AND GO
AGAIN AFRESH
more opportunities there are to
impress.
“The aim for me is to get as many
minutes as possible and show
to everyone just how good I can
play. This season I’ve been limited
but I feel I have to prove to myself
and everyone else that I can play
regularly and play comfortably at
this level.”
Pring made his 100th career
I don’t think they’re going to boast
the most amount of possession,
certainly Swansea can take that
award, but we will have to be wary
of their runs in behind and we’ll
need to be very switched on.”
This match comes off the back of
Tuesday’s disappointing Carabao
Cup exit against Lincoln City,
in which Pring was an unused
substitute.
obviously disappointed with the
result, we wanted to be in the hat
but we have to stay positive, move
into the next game and not look
back on results too much. We have
to keep working, pick ourselves up
and go again afresh.”
City still need to find more
consistency and could consider
themselves unlucky in narrow
defeats against the likes of high
flyers Norwich, Burnley and
Sheffield United this season. They
held Swansea to a draw recently
and remain positive of giving fifthplace
Watford a tough test.
Pring said: “In different games
it comes down to moving the
ball with purpose, and breaking
different teams down. Against
Sheffield United we had a lot fo
the ball, we had a lot of the ball,
we created opportunities and on
another day we probably score a
couple of goals.
“I feel we go into most games with
he same mindset, just some games
don’t go as planned. We can take
our performances from the likes
of Sheffield United, and against
Swansea for example, we keep
trying to do what we’re good at and
when we do that we can cause any
team a problem.” And while the leftsided
defender is looking forward
to backing England all the way to
the World Cup final in the next few
weeks, Pring is also relishing the
return of the domestic season.
“The break has come at the wrong
time for me,” he said. “A break is
nice but right now I just want to
keep playing. I’m hoping to be
picked for this weekend, help us get
some points and then crack on for
when we’re all back.
“I hope we do well, I think we will
get out of the group and then
it’s about a good run to the final.
Either way it will be a good watch,
different due to the time of year but
it will be good.”

Ndiaye 49
An early second-half header from Iliman Ndiaye secured the Blades victory
as the Robins gave everything in atrocious conditions at Ashton Gate.
City dominated most of the game but were left to rue another error that
allowed Ndiaye to score unmarked at the far post.
Defeat was less than the Robins deserved after they did everything but score,
including hitting the bar and the post, and had a penalty disallowed and
George Tanner sent off for a reckless challenge in added time.
City secured a point on the road at the Riverside with an early Andi
Weimann goal gave them a share of the spoils.
Weimann scored in the 10th minute after a counter-attacking move before
Chuba Akpom equalised in the second half as Boro dominated possession.
The Robins needed to dig deep defensively and with Max O’Leary at his shotstopping
best, and Joe Low thrown on for his debut with 10 minutes to go it
was a resilient City who came away from Teesside with share of the points.
Today is a very special day at the club…for many
reasons.
The game here at Ashton Gate is not only our last
game before the World Cup break, but before kick-off
today we shall mark the passing of former players
and supporters who gave their lives in both World
Wars and other conflicts.
We will also be celebrating the past at half –time
with a parade of the 1997/98 promotion winning
side. It has been a real privilege to be able to bring
this popular squad back together at Ashton Gate to
celebrate 25 years since that promotion to Division
One, where they incidentally went up with today’
opponents, Watford.
It’s very humbling for us to see how pleased the
players are and the great reaction the receive from
you, the fans. On that note, I hope you all enjoy the
Our cartoon today comes from the ‘Bristol Evening World’ of the 17th February 1958 following the derby clash in
the 5th Round of the FA Cup. A big disappointment for City fans, but it was a thrilling encounter, the highlights of
which were shown in the local cinemas…
City’s reward for winning 2-1 at Notts County after
having overcome Accrington Stanley was this mouthwatering
class with the Rovers. From when the sides
were drawn out of the hat, all Bristol counted down the
days in anticipation of this encounter and they were not
to be disappointed. It was a classic from the moment
Johnny Watkins headed City into an early lead, but it
proved to be a mixed afternoon for City’s left-winger, as
he had his spot-kick saved by Ron Nicholls just before
half-time.
The game ebb and flowed until eventually it was settled
in Rovers’ favour, but many were
convinced that Geoff Bradford was offside.
Player
Profile
PAUL GAINEY
A dazzling inside forward or
winger, the diminutive, yet
muscularly-built German Alec
Eisentrager, who had come to
England as a prisoner of war, won
over supporters with his skilful
displays.
A ball artist, whose smooth
control, deft flicks and touches of
showmanship – including a rarely
seen at the time bicycle kick – gave
an exciting new dimension to the
Bristol City attack. Few people had
seen the bicycle kick. He invented
the move on the field: body in the air,
back to the ground, he shot the ball
backwards with a sudden snap of
his legs, like the blades of scissors.
Real name Alois, a prolific goalscorer
at Trowbridge Town, Bob Wright
signed him in January 1950 and he
made his league debut at home to
Northampton Town that month.
He netted four goals in a 6-0 home
win against Newport County two
weeks later, scoring 47 times in 229
League games overall, thrilling fans
with some wonderful strikes before
joining Merthyr Tydfil in July 1958,
then playing for Chelmsford City and
Westbury Park.
Eisentrager began playing in
Hamburg aged eight, and four years
Alois
Bernhard
Eisenträger
later joined Hamburger Sport-Verein,
the oldest and best club in that city,
playing for their youth team and
once for the reserves.
With the outbreak of WW2, he was
called up into the Luftwaffe when
still only 16, and within three months
was captured in Holland. On being
brought to England in February
1945, he was in prisoner- of-war
camps at Herne Bay, Ashford,
Chippenham and Yatton.
He was able to utilise his dribbling
and crossing skills to splendid effect
on the wing, was a firm tackler,
and had a fierce long-range shot.
He lived in the Bristol City houses
in Dursley Road, Shirehampton,
and he would catch the bus to the
ground on Saturdays alongside the
supporters.
When he was at Chelmsford in the
Southern League, he used to travel
up by train and play cards on the
journey. He had learned to play in the
prison camps. Being a really good
player, he once said he earned more
on the way to the game than he was
paid for the actual match. He would
then tip the waiters heavily and they
would buy and cook a steak for him
on the return journey.
On retirement from football, he
ended his working life at Cam Gears
in Clevedon, where he died aged 90
in 2017.
SHOWPIECE MATCH
OF THE SEASON
>36 THE ROBINS WATFORD
1-1
Edwards, 68
DATE: APRIL 13TH 1998 | PLAYED: ASHTON GATE
COMPETITION: NATIONWIDE DIVISION 2 | ATTENDANCE: 19,141
CITY LINE-UP: WELCH, LOCKE, BELL (MURRAY), GOODRIDGE,
TAYLOR (EDWARDS), CAREY, OWERS, DOHERTY (HEWLETT),
MCCARTHY, CRAMB, TINNION.
Ashton Gate, Easter Monday 1998, it’s the showdown between Bristol City and
Watford for the League title.
The two clubs had battled neck and neck in the League all season and clear
daylight separated them from third place. Their earlier clash at Vicarage Road
had ended in a titanic 1-1 draw. City went into this game having already clinched
promotion while Watford knew a win would assure theirs. As such, an excitable
set of 2,600 travelling fans contributed to the largest Division Two crowd of the
season.
Top scorer Shaun Goater had been sold to Manchester City a few weeks earlier
so on-loan Sean McCarthy partnered Colin Cramb up front and City took the
game to Watford from the start with wide men Greg Goodridge and Brian Tinnion
in much of the action. However, City suffered a major blow on 37 minutes when
inspirational defender Shaun Taylor had to go off injured and was replaced by
Rob Edwards.
City continued their offensive in the second half and Cramb headed on to the
crossbar but it was Watford who opened the scoring on 64 minutes. City keeper
Keith Welch saved a fierce shot from Peter Kennedy but could not hold on to the
ball and Jason Lee was alert to come powering in to smash it into the net.
With so much at stake, I can remember the sinking feeling in my stomach but
fortunately it was short-lived. Four minutes later Tinnion floated a free-kick to the
far post for McCarthy to head down for Edwards to net, while McCarthy ran off in
jubilation as if he had scored himself!
Post-match, as other results in their favour came in across the airwaves, the
Watford fans began celebrating their promotion. So, the struggle for the title
would go to the last game, where the Hornets won at Fulham while City lost at
Preston North End, meaning they had to settle for the runners-up spot, albeit 13
points clear of Grimsby Town.
A message about anti-social and criminal behaviour
To mark the new season, we want to
make you aware of new measures
being taken across all of football
to ensure everyone can have a safe
and enjoyable experience. We are
supporting strong action from the
FA, Premier League and EFL to tackle
anti-social and criminal behaviours
that put all of us at risk.
This reflects the seriousness of
the risks to fans and staff – pyros
can burn at 2000 degrees Celsius
and cause lifechanging injuries,
while entering the pitch endangers
WHAT DID YOU COLLECT
FOR THE WORLD CUP
Grandad?
CITY FAN STEVE SMITH CONTINUES
HIS LOOK AT WORLD CUP MEMORABILIA...
Back in August I covered the 1986
Mexico World Cup through the eyes
of Shoot! magazine, where there
was at least a three-week time delay.
Here’s how GOAL magazine coped
with the 1970 World Cup from the
same country.
GOAL was only around to produce one World Cup tournament.
Reaching their peak: Alan Mullery puts
England ahead against West Germany
in their quarter-final encounter. Martin
Peters would later add a second, but
would go on to succumb to goals from
Franz Beckenbauer, Uwe Seeler and
Gerd Muller and go out.
Brazil get the GOAL souvenir tribute.
Nothing beats those ‘World Cup
specials’ when it comes to keeping
tabs on all the action from the
planet’s top football tournament and
for this weekly publication, soon to
be two years old in August 1970,
there was an abundance of reading
material. What is more, it was only
one week behind the action.
Furthermore, instead of luring the
reader with endless free gifts, there
is some stunning artwork in the
World Cup Art Gallery, painted by Mr
D. Collins, where members of the
England squad have been captured
in fantastic detail in oils. This way,
week by week, you would have a
unique collection of footballers that
would not look out of place in an art
gallery.
All the action for this three-week
competition in South America
kicked-off on 31 May with host
nation Mexico playing out a 0-0
>40 THE ROBINS WATFORD
England’s first World Cup team since 1966 secured a 1-0 win over Romania in their opening Group 3 match, thanks to a Geoff Hurst strike.
draw with the USSR and by the
time the 6 June edition was in the
newsagents, this opening match
was being reviewed, where the star
of the show was the West German
referee, Kurt Tschenscher. “He gave
25 free-kicks in a stop-start first half
and book three Russians in a game
that was never violent.” The report
goes on to state that the Russians
appeared to hold back on tackling in
fear of this strict official, and that if
all referees are being told to clamp
down in this way, it will not make a
pleasant spectacle for the night-time
TV audience.
Our former player and manager,
Terry Cooper, is featured on the front
cover of the issue dated 13 June,
where inside, the England left-back
reveals the appetite for playing in this
position for both club (Leeds United)
and country, and relishes the chance
to attack.
He said: “When I play for Leeds, Don
Revie demands me to play that way
when the opportunity occurs. When I
play for England, Sir Alf Ramsey tells
me to do exactly the same.”
The 1-0 defeat by Brazil was just a
little knock back in the group stage,
but losing in the quarter-finals 3-2
to West Germany after extra-time
despite leading 2-0 at one point was
hard to take. Magazine editor, Alan
Hughes, had this to say about Sir Alf:
“He is a self-confessed professional
and could have seen where it was
going wrong. And it went wrong
simply because we never had
enough men near our opponents’
goal. That’s what 4-4-2, played in
these stamina-sapping conditions,
did to England.”
On 21st June, Brazil were crowned
World Champions and the next
edition, dated 27th June, GOAL
celebrated this with a colourful
front-page of the opening ceremony
and the words: “It’s Brazil, the
champions.” One week later there is
a team photo of Pele, Rivelino et al, in
the centre pages.
What is pleasing about this little
bundle of World Cup specials is
that there are plenty of colour
photographs that bring all the
action closer to home, especially as
England fans could still be belting out
the chorus from the national side’s
chart-topper “Back Home”.
This was GOAL’s first and what we
didn’t know at the time, only World
Cup finals. It was launched in August
1968 and by the time the final edition
was released on 1 June 1974 for the
finals in West Germany, the opening
match was still two weeks away.
So souvenirs like these are certainly
worth hanging on to, because no one
knows what the future holds.
Our two World Cup hopefuls, captured in
oil: Terry Cooper and Norman Hunter.
