Dear Student

Saint Kevin’s College is recognised for its broad and balanced curriculum, we currently

offer over 30 subject options; this curriculum provides an excellent foundation for pupils to

progress to academic and vocational courses at Further and Higher Education institutions,

we also provide a curriculum which will enable our pupil’s direct entry to the world of work.

This post 16 curriculum book will support you in making the right decision about your post

16 education. It provides you with an insight into our subject options and possible career

pathways for each subject.

Here in Saint Kevin’s College we offer a combination of courses which are well resourced,

using the most modern technology – courses that are expertly delivered by dedicated and

committed teachers, who will do all in their power to help you succeed.

In Saint Kevin’s we offer a range of two years and three year post 16 pathways, to meet the

needs of individual leaners. The subjects available in the two and three year pathways are

included in this book.

Pupils from Saint Kevin’s College are currently undertaking courses in Queens University

Belfast, Ulster University; As well as courses at universities in England, Scotland and Wales.

Both universities and employers demand a wide range of personal qualities, skills and

attributes beyond those provided by academic study. We aim to provide pupils with

numerous experiences beyond the classroom. Our curriculum aims to develop various skills

and attributes such as teamwork, leadership, self-discipline, time management and selfconfidence.

PASTORAL AND

Saint Kevin’s College aims to provide our students with

everything they need to succeed, be that academic support,

pastoral support or financial support. The College’s emphasis on

Pastoral Care creates a safe, caring and supportive atmosphere for all members of the

College community. Year 13 and 14 Form Teachers and Pastoral Care Co-ordinator are

available to be sensitive and responsive to the needs of Post 16 Students and to offer

sympathetic, confidential guidance when required. Our Key Stage 5 Pastoral Team is

made up of dedicated professionals, and together they work with Pupils to lead

fulfilling and balanced lives at School and beyond. Our tailored Induction Programme

ensures new and existing Students are made welcome and settle quickly into life in

experienced and dedicated team of Sixth Form Tutors. Our Key Stage Five students will follow the VESPA Mindset

Through the Personal and Social Education programme, students are empowered with the social and interpersonal skills,

experiences, knowledge and attitudes to develop as active, self-confident, responsible members of society.

To compliment the academic curriculum and develop their skills and talents, students are given many opportunities

within the pastoral system which are aimed at building self-esteem, developing good relationships and working on one’s

own initiative.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

FREE LAPTOP SCHEME

The College aims to ensure that no student is lacking in the information, support or equipment that they

need to continue in education. To that end, Saint Kevin’s College invests heavily in our Year 13 free laptop

program. Each Year every Year 13 pupil who would like one is eligible to receive a free Google Chromebook

from the school to help with their studies. Where a first come first serve basis is required, students who

have fulfilled their school capitation fee will receive laptops before those who haven’t. Students who avail

of the laptop scheme keep these laptops and can take them with them when they school and move on to

higher education or employment.

EDUCATION MAINTAINENCE ALLOWANCE

The Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA) of £30 per week is awarded to eligible pupils who

remain in education after compulsory schooling ends (Post 16).

EMA is paid directly into the pupil’s bank account every fortnight to help with the

costs of continuing education. Bonus payments of £100 may be received up to

twice a year. Bonus payments are made of the basis of how a pupil

performs in school:

• Attendance

• Consistent hard work both at home and in school

• Completion of coursework/homework on time and to a good standard

Mrs Thompson our Head of Learning and Teaching personally sees to all students

EMA applications.

instructor.

ENRICHMENT

At Saint Kevin's College we offer a bespoke package of enrichment activities which can be

academic, develop a hobby or more casual, depending on what you want to do. Our Enrichment

Programme is designed to enhance UCAS personal statements and CVs whilst giving students the

time to gain valuable, hands on employability skills such as team work, presentation skills and problem

solving. Prospective employers and admissions tutors value work experience and involvement in extracurricular

activities. This programme gives students the opportunity to take part in valuable activities

to make them stand out and enrich their Sixth Form experience. If you are looking for an academic

option, we offer the option of an additional Level 3 programme to compliment your existing studies.

We firmly believe that all students should have the opportunity to further their learning and skills as

part of their programme of study. We have developed a wide range of enrichment opportunities that

promote academic excellence, leadership and independence.

LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Saint Kevin’s College believes

in providing out students with

every opportunity they need to succeed.

We have multiple means by which our

Post 16 Students have the opportunity

to act as Peer Leaders for their school.

Every year a Head Boy and Head Girl is

elected as well as several deputies, each

Form Class in the school has an elected

Student Councillor and we also provide

training opportunities for Wellbeing

Peer Mentors in Years 13 and 14.

CAREERS

Careers Education forms an integral part of our post 16 programme. Students

receive guidance from the Careers Teachers as well as the College’s Careers

Officer from the Training and Employment Agency. At various times, guest speakers are

invited to talk to our students and we also arrange industrial visits.

In Year 13, the emphasis is on extending their career plans, which involves researching a variety of

jobs and career areas leading to suitable work placement early in Year 14.

Visits to Colleges and Universities on Open Days provide our students with the opportunity to

gather information about particular courses and explore the various institutions. They also research

and apply for courses in F.E. Colleges and begin the process of planning and compiling their own

CVs.

AS

Year 14 Students who choose to go to University are given detailed guidance on the completion of

both their UCAS applications and personnel statements. As well as assistance with completion of

necessary forms in relation to Student Finance matters, two officers from Student Finance visit

the school and ensure that all students successfully submit their applications.

Description: In September we will be offering a new

BTEC Agriculture Qualification to pupils in KS5. This

course is equivalent to one A level and students will have

an opportunity to obtain a Pass, Merit, Distinction or

Distinction* grade. Within this course, you will study 3

mandatory units and select one optional unit. You will

also be required to seek work experience in a land based

sector

ASSESSMENT:

Within the mandatory units is one is an externally assessed unit

which will be set and marked by Pearson – this is a 3-hour

assessment on the topic “Professional Working Responsibilities” and

this can be sat in either January or June. In the assessed task, pupils

will be given information and will complete a number of activities

demonstrating their knowledge and understanding of professional

working responsibilities.

PROGRESSION PATHS:

The agriculture sector is one of the largest employers in

Northern Ireland and produces a gross output of just under

£1.5 billion each year.

Description: This is a new BTEC Agriculture Qualification

to Pupils in KS5. The National Diploma in Agriculture is

equivalent in size to TWO A-Levels and students will have an

opportunity to obtain a Pass, Merit, Distinction or

Distinction* grade. The main intention of this course it to

support progression into careers in the agricultural

management sector. The qualification is an introduction to

the sector and is primarily for learners who are intending to

gain employment in the industry and when taken alongside a

third A level it will support progression to a range of higher

education courses in agriculture or agricultural sciences.

ASSESSMENT:

This course consists of TEN units, SEVEN of which

are mandatory and TWO of which are exams.

This course is an excellent lead to careers in Agriculture

such as Sales and Marketing representatives, teachers,

lecturers, consultants, technical advisors, researchers,

journalists, farm liaison representatives and farm

managers.

Description: This course is intended for students who are

interested in working within the Early Years Sector.

This is an ideal qualification for students who want a broad

background in children’s learning and development which

allows them to progress to further or higher education.

Teaching and Learning involves discussions, case studies,

presentations by professionals within the Early Years

Sector, Personal Research and Placements (visits) to

Early Years Settings.

ASSESSMENT:

There are FIVE core units, studied over two years.

EXTENDED DIPLOMA IN

CHILDCARE

Description: The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Childcare

and Education (EYE) is for people who want to work in a

range of early years’ settings and services with children

(and their families). This qualification is designed to help

learners build the knowledge and skills needed when

working with children and young people from birth to 19

years of age. It covers a diverse range of job roles and

occupational areas working in children’s settings including

early years. It is suitable for those who wish to work, or

are working at an unsupervised level in children’s care,

learning and development in Wales and Northern Ireland.

ASSESSMENT:

In Year One: Learners need to gain a minimum of 65

credits. 61 of these must be achieved at Level 3 or

above. 49 credits must be obtained from the

mandatory units and a further 16 credits must be

obtained from the choice of optional units. This will

usually consist of 20 short units of coursework and

650 learning hours.

In Year Two: The learner requires a further 85 credits

to be achieved from mandatory and optional

‘extended’ units. This will be made up of around 14

Description: This course is for students interested in current and

A.S: Two 1 hour 20 minute, externally assessed written papers. These

papers will examine knowledge and understanding of the taught syllabus as

experience (this requires candidates to relate the themes presented in

their taught modules to social, political, cultural, religious, economic and

environmental issues which affect society and the church in modern

times). Each paper is worth 50% of the A.S qualification and 20% of the

Description: Saint Kevin’s College offers two pathways in

Sport - the choice between studying a Single Award Level 3

National Extended Certificate or a Double Award pathway

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in

Sport. The courses cover the key knowledge and practical

skills required in the appropriate vocational sector offering

greater flexibility and a choice of emphasis through the

optional units. These Level 3 courses offer an engaging

programme for those who are clear about the area of
