Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,
maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent
dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on
what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked
about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served
us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land.
The place: Dan and Nicole were craving a yummy brunch on Sunday
morning and what better place to curb that craving than with a trip
to The Mad Batter on Jackson Street.
The server: It was a busy morning for The Mad Batter, but our
server Dave moved about his section of tables with ease. He’s been
serving there for about a year and a half and loves every second. “It’s
such a fun and easy place to work,” he says. “They’re a great family to
work for and we’ve got year-round business which is a huge plus. The
food comes out of that kitchen so fast which is great for you guys, and
it helps us flip our tables and feed more people — you can’t beat it over
here.” Dave also clued us in on some of his favorite dishes — the corned
beef hash tops his list and is now on Dan’s list of must-try meals the
next time we stop in. Thanks for the tip and a great morning meal, Dave!
The drinks: What’s a trip to The Mad Batter if we don’t get their
original Manmosa? Dan and Nicole both went for their signature
brunch cocktail — orange vodka, Allagash White wheat beer, freshsqueezed
orange juice and champagne. They limit you to two per customer...
as they should. It was refreshing and delicious as always.
The food: Nicole and Dan have their usuals at this point when they
stop at The Mad Batter. Nicole enjoyed the eggs benedict and Dan went
for the creamed chip beef over white toast. He added a fried egg and
a side of scrapple. Safe to say he enjoyed it... Nicole took nearly three
bites and looked up to see his plate cleaned. Unsurprising with the way
Dan eats, but he still had room to pick at some of Nicole’s side of fruit.
We were stuffed and very happy with our decision to start our Sunday
here.
The takeaway: The Mad Batter is open daily for breakfast and lunch
from 8am to 3pm and lunch and dinner from 3pm. They have a full bar
for some fun cocktails and live music throughout the week, including
an open-mic night on Sundays. For their full schedule and menu, check
them out online!

Undertow
Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
Welcome to the seventh-to-last
Undertow of 2022 (ever?) which
means you have only seven
more opportunities to savor
the deliciousness that is the
Undertow like you would a fine wine or an
Egg McMuffin. (Note to self; buy wine before
hitting McDonald’s tomorrow morning.) As
the year winds down, so does my interest in
taking good notes with which to fill out this
weekly missive. Sometimes my note taking is
so lax I will shamelessly write overly flowery
and lengthy paragraphs just to eat up a little
space. Not, uh, not today though. (Ahem.)
I actually had a pretty busy week so I
might have to go back and delete some of that
space-eating nonsense. Might not. Could go
either way, really. Anyway…
Sunday through Wednesday I didn’t do
anything because I’m unemployed. Sure, I
have five jobs at Exit Zero, but only three of
them pay. So it wasn’t until Thursday morning
that my week really got started. My son,
Owen, also unemployed, said, “Dad, wake me
up in the morning and I’ll do magazines with
you.” I knew it was a dirty lie, but I waited an
extra few hours before going out to give him
a more reasonable get-the-hell-out-of-bed
time (6:30am as opposed to 3:30am) and, to
the shock of no one, he did not get-the-hellout-of-bed.
But it’s okay, I still love him.
I was treated to another great session
from WCFA (this week’s standouts; “Melanie”
by The Nines, which sounds like the abandoned
love child of ELO and Billy Joel, and
“Summertime” by The Sundays, which has a
top-10, all-time chorus, absolutely sublime).
But if you do one thing in your life, find someone
who loves you like the WCFA Phantom DJ
loves Joe Jackson (This is NOT a complaint.)
Thursday evening, I made my musical
debut at Jester’s Dive Bar (formerly Rio
Station) with The Terry O’Brien Trio v3.0
(with Cathrine O’Brien and Dave Hughes
and I’ll admit, Cathrine only gets these jobs
because she’s sleeping with the singer) where
we saw a number of friendly faces who made
the drive all the way to Rio Grande (Exit 4) to
support local music. Sue and Carl Spatocco
(Cape Island Foods) brought our friends
Frank and Gloria Winters, who go all the way
back to The O’Brien Brothers Band when most
of my brothers were still alive and have the
t-shirt to prove it. Sandy and Ralph Mannik
attended and treated the singer to a Tito’s
and club because they love me and want only
nice things for me. My former Billy Joel and
keyboardist, Dave Landis, was very complimentary
of our playlist, which runs the gamut
from Elvis Presley to Mike & the Mechanics to
Khruangbin. Dave quit competitive keyboard-
Van Morrison minutiae. (He is
as admirably devoted to knowing
everything there is to know about
Van as I am about Squeeze and
GOD we must be annoying…).
The gig went super-well and I
hope to be invited back.
(While on the topic of Mike &
the Mechanics, my new favorite
YouTube is Pat Finnerty’s “What
Makes This Song Stink,” a play
on Rich Beato’s “What Makes
This Song Great,” and it’s usually
quite funny and on-point, until
this week and his unwarranted
firebombing of “All I Need Is A
Miracle,” a fine, some might say
really catchy 80s tune. Now back
to our regular programming.)
Jester’s Night II came Friday
after my Exit Zero gig with Sugar
Dave. We stopped in on the way
to taking him home to see Cult
Tides, a new band made up of
a bunch of Bob Maschio’s kids
(Bob is a big muckety-muck at
98.7 The Coast and former lead
singer of the classic Cape May
Bar band, Fuzzy Bunny Slippers)
and longtime area bartender/
manager Sean Haggerty. Sean
and I go back to when he was a
pup cutting his bartending teeth
at Terry O’ke nights and I’d have
to beg him to sing, like, backups
on “Losing My Religion,” and
here he was Friday night belting
out you-make-a-my-dreamscome-true.
(Sniff.) They grow up
so fast. (Sniff.)
And Jester’s Night III was late
Saturday night after The Terry
O’Brien Trio v3.1.1 (Dave and Ray
Palmer) played a benefit show in
Nottingham, PA (literally across
the street from Herr’s corporate
headquarters). It was a long day
with a lot of driving so we stopped
in for a shot and beer and caught
the last few songs of the Sindi
Raymond Band (the word “Band”
is doing a lot of heavy lifting here
as it was just two of them and a
drum machine, but I digress) and
she sounded great, as usual.
Three nights in a row at a
bar. At my age. Sunday morning
Terry is REALLY ANNOYED at
Saturday night Terry.
The concert in Nottingham
was an event concerning my
old high school (Kennett High,
Kennett Square, PA) where I saw
any number of former classmates
and teachers. It was nice to see so
many old friends and even nicer
to see I wasn’t the only one who
got fat.
Problem Solver of the Week:
Maddie Sachar (nee Hogan), who
explained to me that she was out
buying wine at Sunset Liquors
in her pajamas because her husband,
Jon, drank all her wine so
she needed more wine and she
was in her pajamas and what’s a
girl to do? Problem. Solved.
Late Night Cooking Tip of the
Week: If you fry your rice in the
leftover juice from the steak you
just cooked and add enough butter
and salt it doesn’t matter that
you got it from the Chinese place
two weeks ago.
Gonna get that vote count in
Arizona any day now…
Lastly this week, if you’ve
seen any of my bands in the last
10 years or so (Love Me Dudes,
The Strangers, The Credibles, The
Terry O’Brien Band) you know
the one mainstay in all of them
was Al Olivero on drums. Al is a
great player and a better dude. If
you spoke to Al for more than two
minutes you would know how
proud he was of his daughter,
Maura, a very talented musician
in her own right, and an incredible
young lady. We lost Maura
last week. Devastating to all of
us that knew her (she graduated
with my son Owen in 2019) and
the one thing every parent fears
above all else. If you can, please
spare a good thought for Al and
his family. I’m sure it would be
appreciated. Maura, we love you,
we’ll miss you.
’Til next week, don’t get
caught in The Undertow.

Bird Droppings
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
It is universally known as the Hawk
Watch Platform and for over 30 years
visitors have been mounting the steps
to be awed by one of the planet’s greatest
migrations of birds of prey. They
are never disappointed because on those rare
days when hawks are not flying, it hosts other
birds to savor. In November and December
its waterfowl — hundreds of ducks pack into
Bunker Pond all within easy viewing distance
of the platform.
Gadwall, a dapper puddle duck dominates.
The males don tasteful gray attire, and
the females are more elegant than female
mallards. Also common are Pintails, with
their rakish, flagellum-like tails. American
Wigeon make the chill air ring with their
comical two-note toot. Northern Shoveler,
identified by their out-sized, spatula-shaped
bills, are often the duck closest to the platform.
Northern Shoveler’s are also the duck
most likely to have their heads under water.
Last weekend, a drake Wood Duck nearly stole
the show. The colorful ducks look like they
are dressed for Mardi gras and at the end of
the 19th century, it was feared the birds were
heading for extinction. It was habitat destruction
as much as unregulated hunting that
decimated the ranks of Wood Ducks. Cavity
nesters, often nesting hundreds of yards from
water, the felling of southern forests almost
spelled the end for this duck. Responding well
to artificial boxes, today the planet’s greatest
density of breeding Wood Ducks are found in
the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge in
North Jersey.
And we can’t forget about geese. With
Canada Geese abound, we in these goose-rich
times forget that 60 years ago, Canada Goose
was a rare treat. A flock of geese passing overhead
would stop people in their tracks. And
it was special, a sound like dogs barking but
growing louder, coming on. I still thrill to the
sound of migrating geese but confess that my
sentimental favorite is the sound of migrating
Tundra Swans. Heralding from the Arctic,
heading for Currituck Sound where the birds
gather by the tens of thousands. We in Cape
May are often treated to a big push of Tundra
Swans around Thanksgiving.
Hated by game management engineers,
beloved by a near militant band of swan lovers,
perhaps no North American bird is the
target of such dueling regard. I like them. I’m
particularly taken by the way non-birders
take to them. On the hawk watch platform,
loaner Swarovski spotting scopes seem ever
trained on the swans in Bunker Pond.
The Movie Column
By arts columnist Tom Sims
Dwayne Johnson stars as Black Adam,
a larger-than-life, supercharged
superhero. It seems audiences and
critics can’t agree. The critics are,
well, critical. They believe the movie
didn’t live up to expectations. The audiences
didn’t care about all that — they just liked the
outrageous fight scenes and new heroes.
But these heroes aren’t new. In fact, the
original characters far pre-date their Marvel
Universe counterparts. Marvel created a new
world of superheroes in the 1960s with many
originals that had never been duplicated.
Note: “many” not “all.” Dr. Strange is a wellknown
sorcerer, but before him there was Dr.
Fate, who originally appeared in 1940. In Black
Adam, Dr. Fate is played by Pierce Brosnan.
His character sees into the future, can duplicate
himself, and is otherwise able to summon
mystical arts to defeat his enemies.
Another character appearing in this
movie is Hawkman (played by Aldis Hodge),
who has also been around for over 80 years.
He flies, has super strength, and uses oldschool
instruments of fighting. Joining these
two is another hero from the Golden Age of
Comics, The Atom (called the Atom Smasher
in this film, played by Noah Centineo). In this
movie he becomes gigantic to defeat his foes.
In other iterations, he shrinks to micro level.
Sound familiar? Yep, it’s Ant-Man.
There’s nothing new with some of these
heroes, but that only makes me more interested
to see what becomes of the DC Universe.
The Marvel Universe has been around a long
time and has been delivering blockbusters
in the movies for 30 years. The DC Universe
has been around since the first appearance of
Superman in 1938 — and it has enjoyed a good
presence in Hollywood as well.
There have been crossovers in these giants
in comic books — Superman vs. Spiderman
for example — but not yet in movies. There
are talks of a crossover film. However, with
Marvel films creating nearly double the revenue
of DC offerings, it may be a while.
Oh… was I supposed to talk about movie
Black Adam? It was good (a little too long,
but good). Johnson was convincing as the
conflicted protagonist. The “Shazam” folklore
plays nicely. The story wasn’t exactly
innovative but seeing those old school heroes
get a fresh makeover was worth the price of
admission. The DC Universe can’t just be
about Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman,
and Aquaman. I’m with the audiences on this
one. Let’s get all these geezers out of the nursing
home and on the battlefield!
The Activity Column
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, keep the conversation light this season!
Family gatherings are back for the holiday
season, and this year, more than
most others, you may want to keep the
conversation light. Experts suggest
you bring, along with pumpkin pie,
some apolitical topics to the table. Buy a box
of conversation starters, or just ask questions.
Try asking your aunt how she met her best
friend. People often ask how couples met, but
in my experience, the beginnings of friendships
can be even more interesting. Like,
of course you befriend the girl who, when
she got caught sneaking out of a window
in AP Biology class to make a McDonald’s
run, convinced the teacher to order a Quarter
Pounder. The other kid giggling while the history
teacher droned on about the War of 1812
and the impressment of American seamen? A
kindred spirit, surely. Maybe your best friend
was the only other kid with divorced parents,
or the co-worker who took up smoking just
for the breaks. Friend stories tend to be funny,
and contagious — you ask Uncle Fred about
his friends, then he asks you, and soon the
entire table is chattering. Laughter around the
table is a lot more fun than arguments.
You can always tell Cape May stories
if your personal well runs dry. Visit MAC’s
“story stops” around the grounds of the Emlen
Physick Estate. Hold your phone up to the
QR code and listen to “first-hand accounts
of life at the Physick Estate during Victorian
days.” Then, speculate together about why
Dr. Physick didn’t open a practice. Are Aunt
Emily and her dog are haunting the place?
Test your knowledge about the Physick Estate
with a scavenger hunt — pick up the map
and clues at the Hill House office or the
Carriage House Visitors Center. There is no
charge, but donations are welcome. Brush
up on your knowledge with a free virtual tour
of the Estate, available at capemaymac.org.
After November 18, visit MAC’s Annual Old
Fashioned Christmas Exhibit in the Carriage
House. Compare your family’s holiday to the
traditions on display. Admission is free.
Treat yourself to the professional storytelling
of live theater. The East Lynne Theater
Company presents “Christmas Presents from
the Past’’ starting November 25 (eastlynnetheater.org).
Gayle Stahlhuth brings a collection
of winter stories to life, voicing 30 characters
along the way. Tickets are $28. Cape May
Stage offers “One Christmas Carol” starting
November 16. This one-man version of the
classic Dickens story is sure to put you in the
holiday “spirit.” Tickets are $35 - $45. Details
The Answer Lady invites inquiries from
gentle readers on all manner of relationship
quandaries, matters of the
heart and ethics. If you’d like to send
a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or,
simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate
the wisdom herein.
Dear Answer Lady
My mother is planning a baby shower for
me, but I have concerns. I do not want to sit
on a “throne” with a paper plate with ribbons
sitting on it on my head while I open presents
for an hour, oohing and ahhing over the tenth
package of pampers. What I want is a more
elegant affair or I don’t want anything at all.
She is insisting on all of that. How can I stop
her? — Angry Mom-in-Waiting
Dear Waiting
You pay for it. Pick a restaurant like the
Inn of Cape May, the Mad Batter or the Filling
Station and move the party there where you
can control it. In other words, you throw your
own party and invite your mother to attend.
You might even choose a location like Big
The Answer Lady
Wise answers to perplexing questions
Wave Burrito — which, depending on the guest
list, would be fun and BYOB. This may not
go over well with your mother. The Answer
Lady suggests you sit down with her and
maybe pitch it as a reveal party which would
most likely include male guests and not be so
present driven. Bon Chance.
Dear Answer Lady
Since I live in Cape May, I often have
guests. My niece and her husband are the
most frequent visitors. I love seeing her, but I
get nothing done when she’s here. Neither she
nor her husband have any interest in going to
the beach, to the Washington Street Mall to
browse the shops or even have lunch. Unless I
lead the way, they sit around the house, and I
have to work around them. I even have a pool
and a lovely backyard with ample seating.
That isn’t tempting to them either. How can I
politely kick them out for a few hours so I have
a minute to myself and can focus on what needs
to be done around the house? — Distracted
Dear Distracted
You must be the most fascinating person
in their lives given they both prefer your
company over the rich natural lure of the
ocean and the beach. Tell them they have to
scoot for a couple hours while you attend to
some business that is looming. When they
resist, be firm. Tell them you can’t miss them
unless they go away for a bit. Tell them you
need a couple hours to get things done and
you will meet them at the Lobster House at a
certain time for lunch together.
Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 609-465-8923
DARLA is a sweet girl who loves to be with
people and is eager to spend time with her
humans. Her family loved her but could no
longer take care of her. She is great with children
and has a gentle demeanor, but lots of
energy. Darla is brushing up on her manners
and leash skills. She would be best with a slow
introduction to dogs and cats.
MYLA is a seven-year-old girl whose owner
was unable to care for her. She is a bit anxious
when she first meets people, but quickly
adjusts once comfortable. Myla enjoys playing
with toys in the yard and has good leash manners.
She would benefit from being the only
dog in the house but would be great in a big
family with children.
LIFE is a friendly and happy one-year-old boy
who came to the shelter when his owner was
moving and couldn’t take him along. He loves
people and is eager to please his humans. Life
is working on his manners and his leash skills
are excellent. He is crate trained and lived
with children. Life would be good with other
dogs, but very hesitant with cats.
Six beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 609-465-8923
THE CONFETTI GROUP is a quintet of captivating
kittens. This group of five — four girls
and one male — are both sweet and loving and
ready to find their new home. They would all
be good in a home with other cats, dogs and
children. The Confetti group is also up to date
on all vaccinations, neutered/spayed. If interested
in these beauties, contact the shelter.
BUDDY loves to play and keep himself busy so
a crazy home with a lot to do would be best.
He is a six-month-old and very healthy kitty.
Buddy would do well in a home with other
cats, dogs and children. He is very friendly and
athletic and loves to chase down any mouse he
sees. If interested in adopting Buddy, contact
the shelter.
JOE has been in and out of the shelter since
2011. He was passed around from house to
house for the longest time until the shelter
took him in to keep him safe. Joe has an overactive
thyroid and gets a small pill twice a day.
He loves to nap in the sun and visit the shelter
workers. Joe is a quiet but friendly boy who
would do well in a home with other cats.
