executing some nifty tricks at 

the opening of Bishopdale’s 

newly-upgraded skate park this 

weekend with a Skate Jam offering 

demonstrations, competitions, learnto-skate 

lessons and a free sausage 

sizzle. 

The Bishopdale Skate Jam will be 

held in conjunction with popular 

community event Celebrate 

Bishopdale, which is taking place on 

the main park at the same time. 

Bishopdale skate park’s twoyear 

revamp was supported by 

the Waimāero Fendalton-Waimairi- 

Harewood Community Board 

with feedback and input from local 

residents. 

Skateboarders now have a fresh mix 

of elements to choose from including 

a 1.65m hipped quarter pipe with a 

corner pocket, several hips with a 

banked extension, a double-sided 

pole jam and a mini ramp.

from algae 

CYANOBACTERIA, a potentially 

toxic algae, has been found in 

Jellie Park’s Hewlings Stream, 

Yaldhurst Bush and Springlands 

Reserve, Halswell. 

The algae typically presents 

in rivers as dark brown or 

black mats, with a slimy or 

velvety texture and a musty 

smell. 

These mats can detach and 

cause rafts in the water. In lakes, 

it is often suspended in the water. 

The algae can make water look 

cloudy, discoloured, or like it has 

small globules in it. 

Animals can get very sick if 

they ingest the potentially toxic 

algae. Unfortunately, dogs love the 

musty smell of potentially toxic 

algae and are naturally drawn 

to investigating it – usually by 

licking or ingesting the material. 

It can be quick acting and fatal to 

dogs. 

City council principal 

waterways ecologist Dr Belinda 

Margetts says the Arthur 

Adcock Memorial Reserve, 

Parklands, is also at risk, while 

Te Mana Ora (Community and 

Public Health) has issued public 

health warnings for potentially 

toxic algae at Pegasus Lake and 

Lake Forsyth.

when we do start to see toxic 

algae appearing in our 

waterways.

Beachside apartments on hold 

but car parking still an issue

planned medium-density 

housing development could 

exacerbate parking issues near 

the beach. 

The Williams Corporation 

medium density units on 

Marine Pde – opposite the 

North Beach Surf Lifesaving 

Club and the North New 

Brighton Community Centre 

– are on hold, but the residents’ 

association and surf lifesaving 

club will keep battling 

authorities until car park issues 

are resolved. 

The residents’ association and 

surf life saving club fear their 

car parks will be used by unit 

residents and their visitors. 

Under new Government 

rules developments like the 

Williams one are only required 

to provide car parks designed 

and marked for use by persons 

with a disability or with limited 

mobility. 

The Government has said the 

intention was to increase housing 

developments in higher density 

areas, particularly housing close 

to public transport. 

But residents’ association 

co-chair Philip Ridge said this

park adjoining the 

North Beach Surf

“The car park at North Beach 

is already at capacity. We’ve 

already identified this as a 

problem about 18 months ago,” 

Ridge said.

residential development with no-off street parking goes

provide off-street parking

infrastructure, a bus might come 

once an hour. So if you live here, 

you need a car.” 

In 2020, Te Manatū Waka 

Ministry of Transport revealed 

there were 920 light vehicles 

for every 1000 people in 

Canterbury. 

Even though Williams has put 

the resource consent application 

for the units on hold, Ridge 

said: “We’ll be continuing to 

pursue our objections to any 

development on that site that 

does not provide off-street 

parking.”

Meanwhile, a city councilfunded 

trial of an innovative 

new method for improving water 

quality in rivers and streams is 

showing promising results. 

The city council, through its 

Smart Christchurch programme, 

has been supporting Canterbury 

University PhD student Ngarie 

Scartozzi to test the eClean 

Bioreactor that she invented. 

Scartozzi designed it to remove 

nitrates and other contaminants

solar powered unit uses a 

collection of bacteria to break 

apart nitrates, phosphates and 

E. coli particles from water as it 

filters through. The water is also 

oxygenated as it is returned to 

the waterway. 

This e-Clean Bioreactor is 

being trialled at the headwaters 

of the Avon River in Corfe 

Reserve. 

Scartozzi says results from the 

first five months of the trial have 

been positive. 

“From December to April we 

experienced a 50 to 95 per cent 

reduction of nitrates, improved 

water clarity, increased dissolved 

oxygen and a decrease in both 

conductivity and turbidity. 

“The system is also 

successfully removing heavy 

metals like zinc, copper, lead 

and cadmium from the water,” 

Scartozzi said. 

The eClean Bioreactor trial 

is being funded by the Smart 

Christchurch programme, 

which investigates and supports 

the development of new tools 

and technologies to address the 

issues facing the region. 

“The trial results look really 

promising to date. We think 

the eClean Bioreactor has the 

potential to have a positive 

impact on the health of our 

waterways,” Smart Christchurch 

manager Michael Healy said. 

“The microbiome can be 

adapted to suit a variety of 

waterways, both urban and 

agricultural, so we are excited 

to see how this product evolves.” 

Scartozzi says the next steps 

is to test the effectiveness of the 

eClean Bioreactor for treating 

high levels of nitrates in farm 

drains. 

“We have modelled the 

conditions of the Ashburton trial 

in the lab and have had a 60 to 85 

per cent reductions in nitrates. 

This region has the highest 

nitrate levels in the country. 

During the field trial, we will be 

running multiple units across a 

dairy platform and farm drains,” 

she said.

the old Bishopdale skate 

park was originally an asphalt 

roller skating area which had 

skate park elements added in 

1996.

Skool will be running the 

Bishopdale Skate Jam on 

Saturday from 11am-2pm with 

the support of the community 

board, and the Bishopdale 

Menz Shed. 

Celebrate Bishopdale is on the 

main park at the same time. If 

the weather is wet both events 

will be held on Sunday.

WHOOPS, THE gremlins got into the 

system last week and the photo on the 

front page of Brian and Janet Lovelock 

winning the Canterbury Beautifying 

Association Clark/Everett Cup was in fact 

a photo from our files of a previous award 

the couple had taken out. 

So today we publish photos of their 

winning garden at the Ngaio Marsh 

retirement home where they live.

He’s truly a stunner – confident, playful, so 

sweet yet mischievious. He’s well and truly 

firmly found his place in our home and the 

other pets adore him. 

Recently he got 

into a little bit 

of trouble, and 

chewed up some 

of my hair from 

the shower. I 

was away visiting 

our son Dylan in 

Houston and he 

must have missed 

me so much. He 

started with a few 

vomits, then had a 

day of being back 

to his sprinting pace, 

gobbling up his 

food and then another 

major vomit directly in 

front of Steve. 

Steve bundled him 

up and took him to 

work. The joys of 

having vets as parents. 

Initial blood testing 

and radiographs of 

his abdomen were 

normal, so Steve 

placed him on 

intravenous fluids and 

gave him medication to prevent vomiting. 

When he continued vomiting we asked 

Richard Lucy to ultrasound his abdomen, 

which proved highly suspicious for a linear 

foreign body, stretching right through his 

small intestines, causing the bowel to bunch 

into a ball, which could have proven fatal. 

Lynne our surgeon was on hand to swiftly 

take the wee guy to surgery. He was a star 

under anaesthetic and Steve could almost 

catheterize him on his own. He was so 

gentle and well behaved with needles. 

Lynne removed from his small intestines a 

wad of my hair and he’d also chewed part of 

a kitchen scour scrubber!!! He was sutured up 

and within an hour he was up walking around 

, ready for his next adventure. 

He’s an absolute delight but he’s going to 

keep us all busy, picking up any potential 

object lying around the house we think he 

might grab at.

New walking tracks at stormwater basin 

PEOPLE WILL be able to enjoy 

4km of new walking track when 

the city council’s award-winning 

stormwater basin in Hoon Hay 

opens to the public tomorrow. 

The stormwater basin is part 

of a 109ha network of basins and 

wetlands that the city council 

has been working on in the upper 

catchment of the Heathcote 

River. The facility as a whole 

has been named Te Kuru and 

includes the Eastman Wetlands. 

The city council is investing 

more than $50 million in the 

project and last month picked up 

a national award for it.

and large areas of wetland and 

native planting for people to

reducing the risk of flooding 

downstream. 

In total, the area will provide 

around 14km of walking tracks,

aren’t being used to store floodwater, 

we want people to be able 

to enjoy this area and for it to 

be habitat for birds and other 

wildlife, including lizards. 

“Friday’s opening of Te Kuru is 

a taste of what is in store for the 

rest of this area. When the other 

stormwater basins are completed, 

this entire area will become a 

recreational and ecological asset 

for the city.” 

The name Te Kuru ‘the blow 

with the fist’ was recommended 

to the city council by Ngāi 

Tūāhuriri. Mana whenua have 

historically used it to reference 

the area.

Coated meat for tasty meals 

Use sauce to 

enhance the 

flavour of meat 

and to help make 

it go further 

Sweet and sour chicken 

Serves 4 

Ingredients 

2/3rds cup tomato sauce, place 

in medium casserole dish with: 

½ cup brown sugar, firmly 

packed 

½ cup white vinegar 

2 x pinches Chinese five spice 

2 tablespoons sesame oil 

4 large chicken breast fillets, 

skinless, cut into thin strips 

1 tablespoon cornflour, dissolved 

in: 

1 tablespoon cold water 

1 large knob butter 

1kg stir fry vegetables 

Directions 

Microwave the tomato sauce/ 

brown sugar/white vinegar/ 

chinese five spice for a minute 

at a time until boiling, stirring 

in-between. 

Stir fry the chicken in the sesame 

oil, and stir fry the vegetables 

in a different pan in the butter. 

Add the cooked vegetables to 

the cooked chicken, pour the 

sauce over them both and toss 

through. 

Pour in the cornflour/water 

and stir until the sauce thickens. 

Serve on rice or noodles. 

Sweet and sour meatballs 

Serves 6 

Ingredients 

Meatballs: 

Up to 750gm mince, place in 

mixing bowl with: 

1 Egg 

1 packet onion soup mix 

Pepper 

Cornflour (to roll meatballs 

in) 

Olive oil 

WHOLESOME: Sweet and sour chicken with stir fry vegetables and noodles – add glace 

cherries if you wish. 

Directions 

Mix mince/egg/soup mix/pepper. 

Roll into balls and roll in cornflour. 

Fry in oil, browning all sides 

and cooking meatballs through. 

(Can be baked in the oven – 

place in oven dish that has been 

lined with non-stick tin foil and 

coated with olive oil, liberally 

coat each meatball with olive oil 

and bake at 180 deg C for 45min. 

Turn mid-way through cooking, 

if possible). 

Ingredients 

Sauce: 

1/3rd cup brown sugar, place

Wine baked pork with 

prunes 

Serves 6-8 

Ingredients 

4 tablespoons olive oil, place in 

frypan 

2 large onions (chopped) 

4 more tablespoons olive oil 

Up to 1200gm pork (sliced or 

cubed) 

24 prunes (chopped) 

750ml oriental plum sauce, 

place in mixing bowl with: 

200ml tablespoons red wine 

Peppercorns 

Directions 

Saute onion in first measure of 

olive oil, remove from pan and 

set aside. 

Heat second measure of olive 

oil and brown the pork, then 

place in large casserole dish. 

Place onions and prunes over 

top. Beat the plum sauce/wine/ 

peppercorns and pour over the 

pork/onions/prunes. Cover, and 

bake at 180 deg C for 1 hour. 

Steak with mushroom 

and horseradish cream 

Serves 4 

Ingredients 

4 porterhouse or sirloin steaks 

Cracked black pepper 

2 tablespoons olive oil 

2 tablespoons butter 

6-8 cloves garlic, crushed 

1 onion, very finely chopped 

12 button mushrooms or 

equivalent, halved 

1 tablespoon horseradish cream 

4 tablespoons cream 

2 tablespoon chervil, chopped 

or broken up (to use as a garnish, 

optional) 

Directions 

Heat oven to 200 deg C. Heat 

frypan until smoky hot. 

Generously sprinkle the steaks 

with the cracked pepper, and 

brush with oil, place on the very 

hot pan, sear both sides until 

brown (about 2 minutes per side). 

Place steaks in oven and roast 

for a further 5min, or longer if 

steaks are thick. 

Remove from oven, and let the 

meat rest for 5min. 

Place the butter in a frypan, 

when it sizzles, add the onion and 

garlic and saute. 

Add the mushrooms and cook 

until golden and soft, season with 

pepper. 

Remove heat and add horseradish 

cream and cream and mix 

through thoroughly. 

Turn heat back on and 

gently simmer together until 

thick and heated through. Place 

steaks on heated plates and spoon 

over the sauce. Top with chervil, 

if using.

It was a Witches Market that 

awaited 500 children at St James 

park for the 4th annual free 

Halloween community event 

proudly hosted by Ray White 

Papanui and Rotary Papanui and 

Otautahi clubs. 

The weather didn’t deter the 

witches, ghosts, spidermans 

and an array of other amazing 

characters that entered the 

park to spot all the magic potion 

ingredients at the various stands. 

Finding mermaid hair, frogs legs 

and snake venom were all part of 

the fun, finishing with Halloween 

treats and a sausage sizzle 

arranged by Rotary Papanui. 

It was such an enjoyable
