Beachside apartments on hold
but car parking still an issue
• By Natalie Pham
THERE ARE concerns a planned
medium-density housing
development could exacerbate
parking issues in North Beach.
The Williams Corporation
medium density units on Marine
Pde – opposite the North Beach
Surf Lifesaving Club and the
North New Brighton
Community Centre
– are on hold, but the
residents’ association
and surf lifesaving
club will keep battling
authorities until car
park issues are resolved.
The residents’
association and surf life
saving club fear their
car parks will be used by unit
residents and their visitors.
Under new Government
rules developments like the
Williams one are only required
to provide car parks designed
and marked for use by persons
with a disability or with limited
mobility.
The Government has said the
intention was to increase housing
developments in higher density
areas, particularly housing close
to public transport.
But residents’ association cochair
Philip Ridge said this would
have a major impact on it and the
surf club’s car parking.
On a weekday morning, the car
park adjoining the North Beach
Surf Lifesaving Club and the
Philip
Ridge
North New Brighton Community
Centre could be full, Ridge said.
He said on busy days, people
have to walk a block in order to
get to the beach.
“The car park at North Beach is
already at capacity. We’ve already
identified this as a problem about
18 months ago,” Ridge said.
At the latest Waitai Coastal-
Burwood-Linwood
Community Board meeting,
the residents’ association and
the surf life saving club jointly
requested the community
board did not issue resource
consent for the development
until off-street parking is
provided.
Said Ridge: “If you don’t
provide off-street parking
then you’ve got to have the
infrastructure in place.
“This is New Brighton. We
don’t have a public transport
infrastructure, a bus might come
once an hour. So if you live here,
you need a car.”
In 2020, Te Manatū Waka
Ministry of Transport revealed
there were 920 light vehicles
for every 1000 people in
Canterbury.
Even though Williams has put
the resource consent application
for the units on hold, Ridge
said: “We’ll be continuing to
pursue our objections to any
development on that site that
does not provide off-street
parking.”
SHORTAGE: North Beach Residents’ Association co-chair Philip Ridge said car
parking near the surf lifesaving club was already at capacity and could worsen if a
new residential development with no-off street parking goes ahead.
Surely five weeks is way too
early to be worrying about
Christmas deadlines
Push to lower speed limit outside college
• By Natalie Pham
THE SPEED limit of a busy road
in Linwood could be lowered to
improve safety.
Te Aratai College principal
Richard Edmundson has been
approached by parents and
students throughout the year
about concerns of excessive
speed on Aldwins Rd.
Edmundson
said it is not
ideal to have
a 60km/h
zone outside
of a school
because the
median speed
could well be
Richard
Edmundson
higher than
the speed
limit.
But the speed limit could
now be reduced to 30km/h
during school hours as part of
the city council’s Slow Speeds
Neighbourhood programme.
Residents are encouraged to
share their views on the planned
changes which would see speed
limits reduce from 50km/h to
40 and 30km/h on selected
streets.
Said Edmundson: “There’s
always been people driving fast
along Aldwins Rd whether it’s
50km/h or 60km/h. All through
the day because it’s such a busy
road.’’
While the speeding issue has
MEDIAN: Traffic on Aldwins Rd, outside Te Aratai College.
been here “forever,” he thinks
the increase of the speed limit to
60km/h has led to a rise in the
median speed.
There have been near misses
outside the school caused
by a number of factors, but
Edmundson said speed increases
the risk.
“The single greatest fear
that any principal has is that
something will happen to the
students. It’s greater than NCEA
passes, it’s greater than how the
school musical is going to go.”
The public consultation for
the programme is open until
January 3.
City council transport
operations manager Stephen
Wright said staff will make
PHOTO: STAR NEWS
changes to the plan and present
their recommendations to a
hearings panel.
“We anticipate this would
happen in February, with a
decision made by council in
March.”
Chisnallwood
fights ministry’s
plan to reduce roll
THE FIGHT OVER the Ministry of
Education’s plan to slash the roll of a
Christchurch school continues.
Chisnallwood Intermediate principal
Justin Fields said the school has been
putting together a submission in recent
weeks.
“We’re putting a case forward for the
reasons why the roll shouldn’t be slashed
to 400.”
While Fields could not detail the submission,
he said parts of it were based on a
disagreement with a ministry report.
Fields said the school has received support
from Burwood Ward city councillor
Kelly Barber, Coastal Ward city councillor
Celeste Donovan, and Mayor Phil Mauger.
The decision to reduce the student intake
at the school from 664 to 400 within
two years came after the ministry report,
which found the majority of students live
in the zones of the neighbouring
schools.
In March 2022, 493 students at the
school were out-of-zone enrolments.
Said Christchurch East MP Hon Poto
Williams: “The roll is being reduced to
ensure a sustainable network of schools
that provides quality education for all
students.”
Shirley Intermediate School, Haeata
Community Campus, Parkview Pārua
School and South New Brighton School
are expected to have sufficient space for
students if Chisnallwood reduces its roll.
Additional capacity is also planned for
Rāwhiti School and Te Aratai College in
the short-term and Queenspark School
in the long-term outlook for roll growth
funding.
Other options in the report, including
a capacity of 500 or 700 students, were
declined.
This was not the first time Chisnallwood
Intermediate has had to fight a
ministry decision.
In 2012, then Education Minister
Hekia Parata announced plans to merge
the school with Aranui High School.
However, the decision was overturned the
following year.
In a letter sent to the
Ministry of Education and
Poto Williams on October 7,
Barber said the roll reduction
was very short-sighted.
Kelly
Barber
“The area around Chisnallwood
provides potential for
affordable housing, and the
new housing intensification
rules, it is highly likely that there will be a
growth in housing in East Christchurch.
“The key word here is choice – parents
sending their children to Chisnallwood
currently have the choice to do this. If the
roll is reduced, then this choice will be lost
for many families in the wider school area.”
Barber also said many families have two
generations of children who have attended
the school.
“For many families, it has not been their
choice to live out of the small enrolment
scheme home zone. They were displaced
by the earthquakes but choose to come
back to the area to send their children to
Chisnallwood because they are still part
of this community.”
In response to Barber’s letter, Associate
Minister of Education Jan Tinetti said
siblings of current and former students
will have priority access to any out-ofzone
places.
“A local team for local people”
I want to introduce you all to the newest
member of the McMaster & Heap Family, a five
month old red Mandalay kitten who I fell about
by accident really.
He’s truly a stunner – confident, playful, so
sweet yet mischievious. He’s well and truly
firmly found his place in our home and the
other pets adore him.
Recently he got
into a little bit
of trouble, and
chewed up some
of my hair from
the shower. I
was away visiting
our son Dylan in
Houston and he
must have missed
me so much. He
started with a few
vomits, then had a
day of being back
to his sprinting pace,
gobbling up his
food and then another
major vomit directly in
front of Steve.
Steve bundled him
up and took him to
work. The joys of
having vets as parents.
Initial blood testing
and radiographs of
his abdomen were
normal, so Steve
placed him on
intravenous fluids and
gave him medication to prevent vomiting.
When he continued vomiting we asked
Richard Lucy to ultrasound his abdomen,
which proved highly suspicious for a linear
foreign body, stretching right through his
small intestines, causing the bowel to bunch
into a ball, which could have proven fatal.
Lynne our surgeon was on hand to swiftly
take the wee guy to surgery. He was a star
under anaesthetic and Steve could almost
catheterize him on his own. He was so
gentle and well behaved with needles.
Lynne removed from his small intestines a
wad of my hair and he’d also chewed part of
a kitchen scour scrubber!!! He was sutured up
and within an hour he was up walking around
, ready for his next adventure.
He’s an absolute delight but he’s going to
keep us all busy, picking up any potential
object lying around the house we think he
might grab at.
Haeata Services Program Adventure
Challenge 2022
Written by Staff Waaka
Over the year the Services Program at Haeata has participated in camps and courses at Burnham
military Camp, and the surrounding areas of Canterbury, and under the watchful eyes of the New
Zealand Defence forces Youth Development Unit (South) and school staff.
The team has worked on self discipline, mental and physical wellbeing and setting high standards to
achieve what they set their minds to, the last camp of the year with the military is the coast to coast
however with the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 2 and New Zealand observing a day of
mourning on the 26th September, we were forced to adopt plan B.
Plan A is the coast to coast for the South Island Academies, however with one day down of the
week, we had to go to plan B which was 24 tasks in 24 hours, each task was between one hour to
40 minutes long with travelling in between, all participants did not have a chance to sleep during
the 24 hours, with activities such as the beep test, the confidence course, and navigation by day and
night, radio operation just naming a few.
The three south island academies Aurora college from Invercargill, Mawhera from Greymouth high
school and Haeata Community Campus, totalling thirty students and four directing staff members
from their respectful schools, and 15 military members made a large group for safety and direction
for our ākonga (students).
We arrived at Burnham military camp on Tuesday 27th September, ready for the challenges, set up
our camp for the night, and after dinner went to sleep not knowing what task would be our first,
however we were woken to our first task a fire drill at midnight, and after 23 hours we finished a
lot tired but extremely proud of their achievements.
A well deserved sleep followed for all of us, and with a small sleep in as well, we headed to easier
tasks, to Canterbury adventure park to test our confidence and test our courage by ziplining was an
awesome way to see the Port hills up close, by flying over them.
By Thursday afternoon the school staff members and platoon commander had to meet to find
out what academy performed the best, however neither academy could be faulted on discipline,
resilience, guts and participating throughout the event, with all points tallied and behaviours
scrutinised, and with no clear winner all three academies won.
Haeata Community Campus did well, but we will challenge again next year and work harder to
bring the trophy home next year.
Hospitality @ Haeata
Written by Nicki K
How exciting that we are in term four already and I look forward
to another action-packed term.
Term 3 was filled with some incredible catering opportunities.
Our senior hospitality students certainly rose to the challenge.
Personally, I relish, and will grab any opportunity for my akonga
to experience working to a timeframe and with real customers as
these are authentic assessment opportunities. It fills me with such
pride when I see how organised they are, and how well they work
together as a team, and it is evident that they have the potential
to excel in any hospitality employment.
They made gourmet ciabatta sandwiches with honey baked
ham, salad and gruyere for 250 . My senior students moved like
clockwork and the task was completed in record time. Not only
that, the sandwiches were so tasty and professional that, on the
next occasion, the numbers were increased to 500 to cater for
the National Kapa Haka competition.
An opportunity to be assessed arose when ERO visited the
Campus. They enjoyed a sumptuous lunch of steak casserole with
grain mustard mash, chicken tenderloin poached with sweet chilli
and orange over fragrant jasmine rice, all served with a selection of seasonal veggies. Followed by
sticky date pudding or rooibos poached pears. Needless to say, the food was outstanding, as were
the compliments!
Another highlight was catering for the drama show “This is Me”, and it was so commendable how
only three students managed to serve a two course dinner so professionally to a “restaurant of 60
diners.”
It fills me with immense pride to see how the students are coping with the demands of the
Hospitality course, and how many Level One and Level Two credits are gained along the way.
There certainly are some fine young chefs being created, nurtured, and encouraged in the kitchens
at Haeata.
The juniors students too have been equally impressive with their creations of breakfast burritos,
pizzas, banana nutella rolls, mexican wraps, apple crumble, banana crepes, cheese scones, afghans,
and chocolate chip cookies….to name but a few!
It’s always so exciting to watch their skills and confidence grow and I can’t wait to follow their
progression into senior school.
Autaia: Haka Theatre
Dame Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre
Written by Juanita Asi
On the 29th of September 2022 a group of Kōmanawa ākonga were very fortunate to attend the
Autaia Haka held at Dame Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre, Auckland. On arrival we were greeted by the
mass of supporters who came to support all the participating kura.
We were very lucky to watch 7 kura from Auckland share their stories of Atua Māori, The
struggles rangatahi Māori are facing in this day in age, Identifying as a rangatahi Māori in a suburban
area and pūrākau Māori. All these beautiful pūrākau made you feel inspired, sad, it made you cry
and with the roaring sounds of haka through the aisles of the theatre it made your heart skip a
beat and jump up off your seats but most of all it made you feel proud. All the beautiful acts were
shared through whakaari(acting), waiata, haka, mau rākau and many more whilst filling the theatre
with Te Reo Māori.
When we asked our ākonga what were their whakaaro (thoughts) about Autaia they had the
following to say:
Navaeh “Autaia inspired me to build my confidence in speaking Te Reo Māori and getting on the
stage to help others build their confidence too to get on stage to do haka”
Wilson: “Watching the boys do the haka made me want to be like that and haka like them as
well”
Savannah “My highlight of Autaia was all of it! The creativity, All the Te Reo Māori that was spoken
and not being able to understand it. Seeing others laugh made me want to learn Te Reo Māori”
Zodie “The show inspired me to learn Te Reo Māori because not everyone gets to learn it”
When asked how could we implement something like Autaia in our show Nōu te kō Haeata ki te
ao production as a collective you all said and agreed that we as rangatahi would love to “showcase
the struggles that we are facing as rangatahi Māori living in Aranui and what it is to be Māori and be
proud”.
Our Kōmanawa ākonga not only represented Kōmanawa well but also represented Haeata as a
whole amongst the many Kura Māori, Kura Kaupapa Māori and Kura tuarua that were all present.
Nā reira e ōku rangatira o āpōpō nei a māua ko Kōkā Theresa e mihi ana ki a koutou katoa. Nō
