Ashburton Musical Club
The Club was presented with "An Afternoon of Song" on
Sunday 6th November. The musicians were Alex Doig
(baritone) and Emma Gilkison (soprano), accompanied by
pianist Jeremy Woodside.
Alex commented onthe comparatively small number of
songs for baritone soloists. Many of the lyrics came from
English poets, some of whom wrote the accompanying
music. The subject matters ofthe songs were sea, land and
military endeavour; all of which told astory. Alex’s selection
included; “The Vagabond, Bright is the ring of words”
(Vaughan Williams), “Fair Robin ILove” (Mechem), “Sea
Fever, “The Bells of San Marie”, “Vagabond” (all from
Masefield poems), “Spring” (Argento), “A Shropshire Lad”
(Butterworth), “TheOld Superb” (Stanford), “Fearnomorethe
heato'the sun”(Quilter), “SilentNoon” (Williams), and “Three
Saltwater Ballads” (Keel).
Emma, inastrong soprano voice, sang from musical
theatre; “Spring” (Argento), “Somewhere over the Rainbow”
(Arlen), “Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again” (Lloyd
Webber) and finishing with “Irish Blessing” (Chilcott).
The piano accompaniment was demanding and played
by Jeremy withsympathy and emphasis when required. The
programme was thought provoking and well received. The
musicians were generous in sharing their experiences with
club membersafter the finish of the recital.Agreat afternoon
