On Nov. 4, the village of Plain City held
a ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony
for their newly renovated basketball/pickleball
courts at Pastime Park.
The courts are located near the park’s
main entrance at North Chillicothe and Second
streets. Previously, the space was home
to two full-size basketball courts that had
become unusable due to deterioration of the
asphalt surface.
The renovation covers the same footprint
as the previous space and includes two new
basketball courts, complete with new backboards.
The same surface also is marked for
six full pickleball courts. The pickleball nets
are on wheels so they can be moved into
place for pickleball or out of place to make
room for basketball play. The project also
included new fencing all around and a new
handicap parking space.
The village’s decision to include pickleball
court markings and equipment was
based on resident feedback about desired
park and recreation amenities and the increased
interest in the sport in general, said
Haley Lupton, village manager.
London city officials must go back to the
drawing board. Voters turned down the
city’s request for a 0.4 percent income tax
increase to provide the fire and EMS department
with additional funding and to build a
new police department facility.
The request appeared on the Nov. 8 general
election ballot. The vote tally as reported
by the Madison County Board of
Elections on Election Night showed the levy
failing 1,223-1,614 (43.11 percent for the
levy, 56.89 percent against the levy).
Had the levy passed, 0.25 percent of the
0.4 percent income tax increase would have
gone to funding for fire/EMS. The other 0.15
percent would have gone toward debt service
for a new police department.
“I am disappointed that the levy didn’t
pass,” said Mayor Patrick Closser. “We understand
with the state of the economy and
inflation this would be a difficult levy to
pass, but these dollars are needed for our
safety services.
“We will now reevaluate the budget and
make some tough decisions while continuing
to serve the citizens to the best of our
ability.”
Closser thanked the levy committee and
the residents who voted for the levy.
“Even when things don’t go your way,
there are always positives,” he added. “We
gained almost 11 percent in yes votes compared
to the last election, and it was a close
vote for a new levy.”
Other levies
The other levies that appeared on the
ballot in Madison County passed. The results
were as follows:
• Madison County Board of Developmental
Disabilities—five-year renewal of a 1-mill levy
for operation and maintenance of programs
for people with disabilities
For the levy ......................9,812 (71.88%)
Against the levy ..............3,838 (28.12%)
• 9-1-1 system—five-year renewal of a 1-
mill levy for the 9-1-1 emergency call system
Against the levy ..............3,820 (27.89%)
LHS puts cyber-punk spin on ‘Romeo & Juliet’
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
London High School’s drama department
is putting their own cyber-punk, futuristic
twist on an old (very old) classic, “Romeo &
Juliet.” Think dark costumes, neon accents
and lighting, fog machines, and martial arts
bow staffs in place of swords.
“There aren’t a lot of science fiction plays
to do on stage. I just started teaching a scifi
class this fall. And I grew up in the ‘80s
Dwyer
Chiro
2x6
when ‘Bladerunner’ was a thing. All of that
was in my head when I was deciding what
to do for this year’s play,” said Scott Blanton,
English teacher and play director.
This marks the third time Blanton has
staged “Romeo & Juliet” at London High
School. He’s done a contemporary version,
but this is the first time he has set the wellknown
story of star-crossed lovers and feuding
families in the future.
“I didn’t know how the students would
react to the idea,” Blanton said. “They were
really excited when I said I wanted to go in a
cyber-punk direction, and they got on board
immediately when I said we were doing it
with ‘Romeo & Juliet.’ They were all in.”
While the setting is different, the language
is not. The cast is sticking with
Shakespeare’s original wording, and Blanton
is impressed with how well the actors
have taken to it.
“What I like about all these kids is they
really try to understand what they’re saying.
We’ve taken time to make sure they know
what the lines mean and how to say them,”
he explained, adding that the text’s rhythm
and rhyme has proven easier for students to
memorize than traditional dialogue.
Isaiah Capell, a sophomore, plays Romeo.
Blanton said Capell was an easy pick for the
role.
“Trying to do a cold read of Shakespeare
can be difficult, and Isaiah read well the
first tryout. He has a lot of enthusiasm for
the part,” he said.
Playing opposite Capell as Juliet is senior
Kyleigh Wilson, who, according to Blanton,
has really dedicated herself to
memorizing and knowing what Juliet is saying
with her lines. Blanton describes Wilson
as a confident, reliable performer.
Other seniors in the cast include Evie
Gillilan as the nurse.
“She’s another one who when she tried
out, you just knew she was right for the role.
She wanted to play that part and played it
well from the beginning. She’s a really talented
actress. Playing an older character
can be difficult for a high school student, but
she really pulls it off,” Blanton said.
Seniors Olivia Davitt and Jordan Anderson
are each holding down two jobs as part
Among members of London High School’s cast of “Romeo & Juliet” are: (front row, from
left) Gael Juarez Perez, Tate Wilson, Jamie Davis, Emmelia Rafferty, Kaity Chastain; (second
row) Olivia Davitt, Sara Studebaker, Isaiah Capell, Kyleigh Wilson, Isabella Kerry,
Chloee King, Kaelyn Thoman; (back row) Jordan Anderson, Lily Beyer, Ethan Davitt,
Quinton Brown and Lucas Lister.
of the production. On stage, Davitt performs
as the prince in charge of Verona and breaking
up the many fights; off-stage, she serves
as the play’s stage manager. In addition to
playing one of the fighters, Anderson oversees
organization of the prop table.
Senior Anthony Holfinger, who Blanton
describes as a solid, reliable performer,
serves as the narrator, showing up at the
beginning, middle, and end of the show. His
classmate, Sam Homan, is putting his athleticism
and coordination to work as the bow
staff-wielding Mercutio. A member of the
high school band’s fall and winter guard,
Homan has the skills to move well on stage.
Yet another senior, Kelley Tuttle, is lending
her talents to the production, by choreographing
all of the fight scenes. Her training
in stage combat is coming in handy.
Blanton said he has been enjoying preparation
for the play as much as the students.
“It’s fun as an English teacher to work
with kids on a Shakespeare play because
you can really dig in. You have a greater appreciation
of Shakespeare when performing
it than when learning it in a classroom. It
comes alive,” he said.
London High School’s production of
“Romeo & Juliet” is set for 7 p.m. Nov. 18-19
and 2 p.m. Nov. 20. Tickets are $8 at the door.
DD Board seeks Cabaret performers
helping to spread some holiday cheer. This
event is back by popular demand after successful
programs in December 2019 and the
post-pandemic return in December 2021.
Anyone who would like to perform in the
Cabaret—sing, dance, juggle, play an instrument,
etc.—is asked to contact Jeff Gates as
soon as possible at (740) 852-7050, ext.
1814, or jeff.gates@madison.oh.gov.
Linda Granger, parks and recreation director,
said she hopes to find someone who
can teach a pickleball class. Residents also
have expressed interest in starting pickleball
leagues.
One pickleball set of four paddles and a
ball are available to checkout at the park office,
Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. For details,
approximately one-third of the cost of
the project.

4,649 food items collected in BEE the Change drive
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
In support of World Food Day and Make
a Difference Day in October, Mount Sterling
Mayor Marci Darlington organized “BEE
the Change,” a friendly competition in
which London, Mount Sterling, Plain City
and West Jefferson competed to see which
community could collect the most non-perishable
food items to donate to local food
pantries.
The finally tally is in. Together, the four
communities collected a grand total of 4,649
food items, as well as cash donations. These
donations were delivered to five food
pantries around the county.
London collected the most items at 2,147.
Students at London Elementary School
competed to see which class could bring in
the most donations; the winning class enjoyed
an ice cream party. That effort accounted
for 1,700 of the city’s 2,147 items.
West Jefferson collected 2,001 items,
while Mount Sterling collected 379 items
and Plain City collected 122 items.
Darlington is pleased with the way she
and her fellow mayors came together for a
good cause. This is the second time she has
rallied the four communities to help others.
Late last year, they collected everything
from bottled water to baby formula to send
to tornado-ravaged Mayfield, Ky.
“With BEE the Change, I threw it at
them (the other mayors) and they were,
like, ‘Yup, let’s do it,’” Darlington said. “I
think it looks good for Madison County as a
whole when the mayors can come together
and do something that’s impactful for all of
our communities.”
The food pantries that benefited from the
food drive are the Mount Sterling Community
Center food pantry, Good Samaritan
Food Pantry in West Jefferson, DNA/Plain
City Food Pantry, and London Food Pantry
and HELP House in London.
Playful Reno and laid-back Peanut looking for homes
The following are among the pets up for adoption at
the Humane Society of Madison County.
Reno
Reno is a big goof with a big bowling ball head, and
he comes with the best personality ever. With an estimated
birthday of October 2020, shelter staff believe he
is a pure American bulldog. This sweet boy weighs in
at a whopping 75 pounds, and he loves to be out and
about with his people, soaking up as much love as he
can get. He loves treats and will shine for the camera if
you have a treat in hand.
He is a smart guy that could gladly learn anything
you want to teach him. Reno already knows his basic
commands and loves to keep his kennel clean and tidy.
He seems to like other dogs that are his size and that
match his playful personality. He has made a few doggy
friends here at the shelter, but a slow introduction
when meeting new dogs is always best. As far as cats
and small animals, Reno is not a fan. He would need to
go to a home without those things. He doesn’t always
realize his size and since he is a big, playful boy, he
could unintentionally knock down a small kiddo.
He loves to play and would love to have a bigger/older
kid with dog experience to play with him. In Reno’s forever
home, he would thrive with a fenced-in yard with
lots of room to run and burn off his energy. What Reno
loves most is sharing his goofy and loving personality.
He feels no shame giving lots of wet, slobbery bulldog
kisses and will climb into your lap, thinking he is a
small dog. This handsome hunk has so much love to
give, the family who he can share his love with will be
so lucky.
Peanut is a larger lady, about 4 years old and currently weighs
in at 16 pounds. She could stand to lose a few pounds, but shelter
staff hasn’t had the heart to have that conversation with her yet.
This wonderful young lady was brought to the shelter due to not
fault of her own, but because her previous owners were no longer
able to care for her. Peanut has gotten along very well with the kitties
she has met at the shelter. She hasn’t been introduced to any
doggos, but with slow and proper introductions to both cats and
dogs, she should do just fine. Peanut has experience with children,
as she was around them in her previous home.
This wonderful girl is eagerly awaiting her purrever home. If
you would like to meet this sweet girl, complete an application and
come meet Peanut.
The adoption fee is $80 for kittens up to 6 months old and $60
for cats 7 months and older. It includes: a FeLV/FIV test, spay or
neuter, set of shots, deworming, and a one-year rabies shot (if old
enough). Fees can be paid by cash or credit card.
The West Jefferson defense converges on Coal Grove running back Steven Simpson to
make the stop.
Roughriders fight good
fight but come up short
By Jeff Pfeil
Staff Photographer
The West Jefferson Roughriders traveled
to Coal Grove on Nov. 4 to take on the Hornets
in OHSAA Div. VI Region 23 football
action. The Riders put on a good try but
came up short in a 47-40 loss.
The Roughriders fell behind early 23-0
before scoring a touchdown in the second
quarter on an Ethan Hostetler 18-yard run
to trim the score to 23-7. After recovering an
onside kick, the Riders moved the ball to the
1-yard line only to be denied before the first
half ended.
Coal Grove scored a touchdown in the
third quarter and another in the fourth to
take a 39-13 lead after West Jefferson scored
a lone touchdown on an Austin Buescher
pass to Luke Taylor in the third quarter.
West Jefferson dominated the fourth
quarter. With 10:09 on the clock, Buescher
passed to Mason Book for a touchdown, and
a 2-point conversion set up three more
scores after recovering three onside kicks.
Passes to Book at 8:31, Salyer at 8:01 and
Book again at 7:08 put the Roughriders on
top with a 40-39 lead.
A deep kickoff that went out of bounds
set up the Coal Grove offense to go on a
touchdown drive with Chase Hall running
in for the winning touchdown with 3:47 left
in the game. The Riders came up short on
their final drive of the night.
Chase Hall led all rushers with 305
yards on 36 attempts and four touchdowns.
Austin Buescher led West Jefferson in passing
with 24 completions on 396 attempts for
316 yards and five touchdown passes.
West Jefferson ended the season with a
record of 5-7.
