The London High School football team and St. Patrick School are
joining forces to host a Community Turkey Bowl & Food Drive on
Nov. 22. The event will take place at 5 p.m. under the lights on London
High School’s Bowlus Field.
The “bowl” part of the event is open to London City Schools and
St. Patrick students in grades K-8. The field will be sectioned off
into smaller fields. Boys and girls who choose to participate will be
divided into teams by age group, then play two-hand touch, backyard-style
football. London football players will serve as the quarterbacks
and coaches. All of the games will take place
simultaneously.
The “food drive” part of the event asks that anyone who attends
donate a non-perishable food items. Donations will be divided between
HELP House and the Madison County Food Pantry. Items
needed include: jarred gravy, boxed stuffing, boxed cornbread, and
cans of green beans, corn, peas, mixed vegetables, peaches, pears
and pineapple.
The Turkey Bowl came about following a conversation among
staff members at St. Patrick School. They were discussing things
the school used to before the pandemic, one of which was a combination
football game and food drive. They used to hold it on the athletic
fields behind the school.
“Marcus Stone (a teacher at St. Patrick
and a football coach at London) was there,
and he started throwing out a bunch of
ideas,” said Rick Logue, St. Patrick principal.
“We talked about bringing it back but
involving more people. Marcus is the one
who had the idea to put the games on London’s
field. It evolved as a whole team effort.”
Kyle Cutler, London’s varsity head football
coach, was all in when Stone suggested
the two schools collaborate.
“We’ve been talking about finding ways
to give back to the community,” Cutler said.
“The holidays are not necessarily great for
everybody. We wanted to do something fun
for everyone and bring the totality of the
community together.”
Cutler and Stone invite students to participate
in the Turkey Bowl as spectators or
players. Students can simply show up the
night of the event or pre-register by contacting
Cutler at kyle.cutler@london.k12.oh.us.
The Turkey Bowl is all about making a
positive impact. Older students get to know
the feeling of helping others. Younger students
get a chance to have some fun. The
adults in charge get to take part in teachable
moments. And local families in need
get food for their Thanksgiving dinners.
Update on WJ Schools’ 5-year financial forecast
By Linda Dillman
Staff Writer
Passage earlier this month of a 5.87-mill
substitution levy for Jefferson Local Schools
will keep the district on track–for the near
future–in meeting a five-year financial
forecast.
On Nov. 14, Treasurer Mark Ingles presented
the school board with a semi-annual
update of the forecast, which runs from July
1, 2022, through June 30, 2027. The purpose
of the forecast is long-range planning based
on information available today.
“The substitution levy goes a long way to
support district finances, to shore up finances
and keep us in the black,” Ingles said.
The levy passed by more than 56 percent.
It will be on the tax rolls for seven years.
Of the nearly $16.7 million in the district’s
general fund, local sources account for
68 percent of revenue, with real estate taxes
accounting for 37 percent. Ingles said Jefferson
Local is expecting a bump in real estate
tax revenue in 2025-2026 due to an increase
in housing valuations and construction.
Expenditures are estimated to reach
$15.9 million with 55 percent earmarked for
personnel costs which continue to increase.
Maintenance on aging buildings continues
to rise, as well, as mechanical parts break
down.
Ingles said the full breakdown of the fiveyear
forecast will be available on the district’s
website, west-jefferson.k12.oh.us.
In other presentations, Todd Hoadley,
superintendent of Tolles Career & Technical
Center, told board members that 50 junior
and senior West Jefferson students are enrolled
at the center for the 2022-23 school
year. The center’s total enrollment is 810
students, up 140 from the previous year.
“Our goal is to have 1,000 students next
year,” Hoadley said, adding that 53 percent
of Tolles students with career technology
certification pursue higher education after
graduation.
“Enrollment is growing. Employers are
coming to us to get students on a pathway
to employment,” he said.
During regular action, board members:
• accepted a total of $1,671 in donations
from individuals and organizations;
• passed a memorandum of understanding
with the West Jefferson Education Association
regarding the hourly rate for
tutoring and school improvement, substitute
teaching compensation for bargaining
unit members, extra duty supplemental
pay, and Ohio Teacher Evaluation System
language; and
• approved a contract with REACH for
special education services.
SWCD election results and recognition
Nancy Denes-Sparks won the election for
Students earn STAR awards for service
On Nov. 9, the Madison-Champaign Educational
Service Center (ESC) held its 4th
Annual Community STARs Service Award
program. The ESC staff developed this program
to recognize students in both counties
who best exemplify servant leaders.
These students know what it means to
serve the needs of others. The essence of servant
leadership is a deliberate attitude of a
person looking outside of himself or herself
and focusing on the needs of those around
them.
Honorees excel in the areas of service,
teamwork, attitude and reliability. They are
the first to serve the needs of others, sacrificing
time, effort and material resources.
They are great team members, focusing on
the goals of the team and ignoring their own
goals for the greater good. These students
exhibit a positive attitude even in the face
of adversity, all while being reliable day-in
and day-out and being consistently servantminded.
Servant leadership as a philosophy holds
the key to advancing the greater good of a
school, an organization and a nation. Those
who adopt this philosophy personally and
professionally take their eyes off themselves,
look at what others really need and
take action to meet those needs.
This year’s STAR honorees include: Brezlyn
Reneer (Graham, sophomore), Megan
Krummrey (Jonathan Alder, senior),
Patrick Cooney and David Stukey (London,
seniors), Kasey England-Widas and Hannah
Geyer (Madison-Plains, seniors), Avaley
Bostick (Mechanicsburg, sophomore),
Luke Ford (Triad, sophomore), Shayln
Smiles (Triad and Ohio Hi-Point, junior),
Jonathan Hildebrand (senior) and Xavier
Snyder (junior) (Urbana), and Owen Harrison
(West Liberty-Salem, senior).
Each honoree was asked to invite and
honor a Person of Impact, as strong leaders
are developed through the influence of others.
Awardees honored individuals who
have had a positive impact on their character
and leadership development which included
parents, teachers, mentors, coaches,
youth leaders, and pastors.
The adoption of this philosophy started
with retired ESC superintendent, Dr.
CANDY
Continued from page 1
through Dec. 21 (closed on Thanksgiving
Day). Hours are: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday
and Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Wednesday,
10 a.m.-7 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
The shop is closed on Sundays with the exception
of Nov. 27 when it will be open from
2 to 6 p.m. during London’s Old Fashioned
Christmas.
New this year, the Federation is holding
a candy basket raffle. Tickets are $1 each of
six for $5. The drawing will take place Dec.
16. Entrants do not need to be present to win.
The Federation took delivery of their
first shipment of candy on Nov. 10 and
spent the next day bagging, weighing, and
Daniel Kaffenbarger. In his 13.5 years at the agency, servant leadership
became a priority. Each year, one of the students being honored
is selected to receive the Dr. Daniel Kaffenbarger Community
STAR Award, formerly known as the Super STAR award.
This year’s recipient is Kasey England-Widas of Madison-Plains.
Kasey serves as an example for underclassmen
as they are learning how to navigate
high school, demonstrating reliability
through work completion and attendance,
as well as kindness and respect of multiple
perspectives during class debates. He participates
in martial arts and national and
international mission trips.
This year’s award program was made
possible by numerous financial sponsors:
Bundy Baking Solutions, EBY, KTH Parts
Industries Inc., Park National Bank, the
People’s Savings Bank, and State Farm Insurance
agent Erin Patton. Refreshment
donations were provided by Der Dutchman,
Farmer’s Daughter, Let’s Eat Cake, and
Vallery Farmhouse Bakery. Student recognition
gifts were provided by Burger King,
Marie’s Candies, and Subway.
putting on display the many, many pounds
of candy. They expect to take more deliveries
throughout the sale but encourage customers
to shop early to be sure to get their
favorite varieties.
Proceeds from the sale go toward the upkeep
of the Federation’s home base, the
Coover Club House on North Main Street.
The organization’s clubs are the Career
Women’s Community Club, Coover Society,
Daughters of the American Revolution, Delphian
Society, TAC Bridge and the Twentieth
Century Club. Each club is required to
maintain a charitable component to their
programming. While not part of the federation,
the Phi Beta Psi Sorority helps with
the candy sale each year.
McNEAL
On Nov. 8, 2022, we did not think that when we awakened this
morning of the sorrow the day would bring. Our hearts were saddened
by the passing of our loved one, Mrs. Faison Alicestine Smith
McNeal.
Born on Jan. 30, 1947, she was the first child of Emma French
Harts Smith (Campbell) and John William Green Smith of Oxford,
Miss. She accepted Christ at the age of 13 at Greater Clark Street
Baptist Church and attended Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Jackson,
Miss., until she relocated from Jackson and began her life pursuits.
A lifelong learner, Faison began her literacy journey and her primary
schooling at Oxford Training School and continued through
sixth grade at Isabel Elementary School. Then she completed her
secondary education at Jim Hill Junior-Senior High School in Jackson,
Miss. She matriculated and earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics/computer
science and music from Jackson State College and
a master of arts in the teaching of math from State University of
New York, Binghamton.
She prided herself on acquiring advanced computer skills in high
school and refining them in college and graduate school, studies
that helped her earn her career at IBM, from which she retired after
27 years. Many were the stories she told of computer programs that

obituaries
she wrote, electrical engineering adjustments that she
made to the technology, and walls of computers and related
technology that she installed at one of our nation’s
popular airports.
Faison was blessed with multiple talents/gifts which
she shared with her colleagues, her friends, her family
and her community. She was skilled in the creative arts,
in drawing, sewing, knitting, quilting, crocheting,
singing, playing numerous musical instruments, including
the trombone and the piano for the children’s choir
at church. She taught Sunday school, piano lessons, and
performed other community services. Early in life she
cooked, baked and decorated cakes for friends, 4-H
Club, her sorority Zeta Phi Beta, and other organizations
in which she held membership. She was a member
of the Concerned Students of JSU who protested and
marched with Martin Luther King, Jr., Rev. Ralph
Abernathy, Hosea Williams, James Farmer, etc. when
Jackson became a hotspot for the civil rights movement
after students were murdered on Lynch Street.
She was quite versatile and prolific. In addition, beginning
in high school and continuing throughout college,
Faison performed in the Jim Hill High School
marching band, the JSU marching band, and at clubs
with one of the local jazz bands. Also, she was athletic
and graduated from Jackson State University as the undefeated
women’s golf champion, and later in upstate
New York, at one point, she was the reigning women’s
bowling champion. She loved animals and nurtured
cats, dogs, hamsters, guinea pigs, doves, finches and
walls of fish in breeding tanks at home and believed in
protecting the environment.
Faison and Dale Eugene McNeal were joined in holy
matrimony on Feb. 16, 1991, in Washington, D.C. Soon
after she transferred to IBM, Columbus, Ohio, and became
a resident of Dale’s hometown of London. After
her marriage, she joined and worshipped at her husband’s
home church, St. Paul’s AME in London.
Mrs. McNeal was preceded in death by: her grandparents;
parents; aunts; uncles; sister, Samantha Ruth
