dedication to creating new design, as we hope our perspectives will

Our interiors are landscapes for authentic 

and analogue experiences. Our homes 

are filled with objects that stimulate the 

senses. Colors that evoke memories and 

emotions. Materials that trigger feelings. 

Shapes that tap into our subconscious. 

Objects influence our impression 

of space and how we feel when in 

the presence of them.

Of course, our perceptions of design are 

subjective. An object can have a clear 

personality and convey multiple messages, 

depending on the receiver. It could be 

a small detail you find endearing. A fabric 

you like to run your fingers over. The 

sound a lamp makes when switched on. 

Or the color of a sofa that soothes you. 

We each experience designs in our own 

ways and its colors, shapes, materials 

and tactility affect how we interpret our 

surroundings.

It’s all about perspectives 

Our name Muuto comes from the Finnish 

word muutos, meaning new perspective. 

Drawing on our Scandinavian roots, 

we create functional, well-crafted pieces 

with an enduring aesthetic and an honest 

expression. Before we introduce a 

new Muuto design, we want to be sure 

that it adds a new perspective, building 

on a strong heritage but in a modern 

context - somehow improving or challenging 

what has been made before. 

We search for designers who share this 

same mindset. Creatives with a contemporary 

take on tradition, who embrace 

the essence of Scandinavian design. Who 

are keen on exploring a forward-thinking 

approach to natural materials, comfort, 

craftsmanship and durability. Individuals 

who bring a fresh set of eyes to 

creating something new, as well as new 

ways of reimagining something old. 

People tend to gravitate towards something 

that feels familiar yet new. We aim 

to create designs that are inviting and 

intuitively attractive. Designs should 

spark curiosity and interest - without 

imposing itself on its surroundings. Because 

a chair in one interior can seem 

soft and elegant, whereas in another 

interior it can look contemporary and 

edgy. It’s all about perspectives.

details that resonate with us on a 

deeper level, which results in an object 

with presence. Able to set the scene for 

dining and socializing. A more focused

a room that feels good. We hope our perspectives 

on Scandinavian designs will 

inspire you to reflect on your surroundings

“With the In Situ Modular Sofa, we 

wanted to combine the functions 

of modularity with the beauty of 

simple, elegant lines and a deep 

comfort. We sketched a profile 

that runs along the seat and back 

of the sofa to subtly hide the visual 

elements of modularity, giving it a 

unique character while bringing the 

individual modules together for a

An apartment in a former police station in Copenhagen 

is now home to Marie Hesseldahl, Design Manager at 

Muuto, and her small family. Recently relocating to the 

historic location, they have quickly made it their own 

— warmer, more colorful and full of custom solutions 

that bring a strong sense of self-expression to the space, 

telling of her keen attention to detail.

We visit Marie to talk about transforming 

a blank canvas into a deeply 

personal space and how she lives and 

grows with the Stacked Storage System. 

One might say that the Hesseldahl family 

home is an exercise in making something 

newly built or renovated, a clean 

slate, into your own, exuding a rich sense 

of history and identity. While the former 

police station now-apartment building 

they moved into just 3 months ago is a 

historic site – the large window in their 

dining room was the main entrance to the 

house – the apartment was renovated in a 

surprisingly faceless manner, with white 

walls and a little too much left to the imagination. 

marie — The apartment felt like a 

blank canvas, so it was important for us to 

restore some sort of life back to the place. 

When we moved into this monochromatic, 

white apartment, I immediately knew that 

I wanted, and needed, to add some color. 

By adding color, texture and warmth – 

on walls and through objects and textiles – 

the space started to feel more authentically 

their own, more like home. The collector 

type by nature, she mindfully distributed 

art, design objects and family heirlooms 

across rooms to weave their own history 

into the fabric of the home. 

The apartment retained some original 

details, among them a load-bearing wall 

with a pillar in the middle of the space, 

making it the perfect room for built-in 

storage, otherwise lacking in the home.

marie — The choice of the Stacked 

Storage System felt natural, and we ended 

up with a Stacked configuration in Oak 

in order to add a softer sense of warmth. 

It allowed Marie to experiment with 

new configurations of Muuto’s adaptable 

storage system in order to create a 

truly built-in feel. Playing with the different 

modules, varying in height, width 

and function, she emphasized the need 

for closed storage for ‘all those things 

you need to have at hand but don’t want 

to look at' – a camera, candles, batteries, 

sewing equipment, drawing materials. 

marie — Our Stacked configuration 

contains a great amount of things behind 

closed doors; my daughter’s books 

and toys, a hidden bar and my boyfriend’s 

collection of analogue cameras. 

Since we do not have a separate working 

desk in the apartment, the dining table 

often doubles as a workstation, so it is 

convenient to have my things at hand – 

my computer, sketchbook, pencils. 

Marie is considering adding another 

row of open storage to house a growing 

collection of books. The open modules 

of Stacked are used to exhibit objects and 

curiosities that are often in use or that 

evoke fond memories. Magazines for inspiration, 

a vase or ceramic bowl from a 

trip abroad, a speaker or an interior scent. 

marie — We wanted a custom-made 

carpented feel for the storage. Stacked, 

with its many different building blocks, 

gave us the freedom to intuitively play 

around with solutions for a particular 

place in the home. It has a simple, yet 

powerful aesthetic quality with a builtin 

look. When friends come to visit, they 

all ask about the Stacked Storage System 

and who built it. 

Stacked is interchangeable, re-configuring 

with the ebb and flow of life. Marie 

points out that while they have found a 

perfect fit for the room, the modules can 

easily be reshuffled into something quite 

different if they feel the need for change, 

rearrange or move to another place altogether 

– giving it a new life in a new space.

For more than half a century, contemporary design has 

maintained an ethos of ‘form follows function’. As we 

ascend into an era of deeper understanding of the interconnection 

between body and mind through scientific 

research, we are beginning to recognize the profound 

effect of art, design and architecture on us – from the 

embracing shape of an armchair to an open office 

flooded in natural light. It begs the question: should we 

be giving more thought to ‘form follows feeling’?

Susan Magsamen is a long-time collaborator and friend of 

Muuto, the executive director of the International Arts + 

Mind Lab at Johns Hopkins University and co-director of the 

NeuroArts Blueprint. Her research centers on the human 

experience of aesthetics – a field adequately dubbed neuroaesthetics 

– examining the impact of architecture, art and design 

on our behavior and sense of wellbeing. Catching up with 

Susan, we spoke of design’s potential for producing wellbeing, 

the importance of expressing an authentic self in the places we 

work and live in, and how we can combine neuroaesthetic 

elements or universal truths about light, form and tactility 

to create more poignant spaces that truly make us flow. 

susan — There's a lot of work right 

now in thinking about things like flourishing 

or thriving – really being your authentic 

self. Even though we all have the same 

biology, my conditioning, my experiences, 

my genetics, make me respond to arts and 

aesthetic experiences differently. 

On the importance of self-expression 

As we grow up, we are learning to better 

understand what we need. You might recall 

decorating your room with an overwhelming 

sense of urgency – a need to rearrange, 

to transform. In these early ways, 

we are projecting our identity through our 

spaces, developing a sense of what we like 

and what we need around us to thrive. 

susan — There really isn’t such a 

thing as good or bad taste – there is only 

self-expression. You cannot say, my essence 

is better than your essence. It is 

what it is, and we need to honor that. We 

will explore ourselves for the rest of our 

lives. We are such intricate beings, and 

to allow that into the spaces that we are 

in holds so much potential. What we like 

changes and as you change, every space 

you inhabit somehow changes. 

Universally appealing neuroaesthetic 

ingredients 

While conditioning makes us gravitate towards 

particular objects and spaces which 

we experience in vastly different ways, 

research, like that of Anjan Chatterjee 

of University of Pennsylvania and Oshin 

Vartanian at University of Toronto, has 

demonstrated that there are more universal 

neuroaesthetic principles we can adhere 

to when forging holistic experiences

of space and architecture – the way i.e. 

color, light or material can be combined 

in order to create a uniform belief around 

or experience of a room. 

susan — Deep aesthetic experiences 

are not about taste. Beauty is totally in the 

eye of the beholder. Still, we know something 

about the effect of, let’s say, color 

and tactility, on us. The research reveals 

how these are neuroaesthetic ingredients 

that artists, architects, craftsmen, designers 

and other professionals can put together 

to create something elevated, in order to 

serve a purpose or solve a problem. 

Adaptability as a tool to make our 

personal mark 

A thing to remember about personal thumbprints 

in aesthetics and arts is that the 

same thing will not work for everybody. 

Frequently, we are designing spaces for a 

group of people that might be highly diverse 

and interchangeable, be it a home 

shared with family, a bustling restaurant, 

or an open office accommodating a varied 

range of tasks. Look to adaptability and 

modularity, two elements that enable us to 

impart a sense of identity on our immediate 

surroundings by bringing that authentic self 

to a space, even for the briefest of moments. 

susan — If you did a study into people’s 

offices, you will find in every single one a piece 

of them – be it a pillow, plant or picture. We always 

bring our identity into a room, no matter 

how generic the space is. The more that is 

allowed, encouraged and honored, the more 

authentically whole we are, the more we 

bring ourselves into what we do. When it is 

not the case, the energy to restrain simply 

takes away from creativity and productivity. 

Light’s potential to ease, invigorate and sharpen 

Susan emphasizes how spaces are really about purpose, 

an emotional or human component that brings a tangible 

vibrancy to a room. It is where ‘form follows function’ 

and ‘form follows feeling’ intersect, producing compelling 

results, transcendent spaces that can elevate wellbeing, 

work flow or learning. 

susan — We are doing more research on and understanding 

why things such as light have such an impact 

on us. Like, why does up-lighting make us feel awe? 

We know that sunrises and sunsets affect us profoundly, 

and that there are certain hues throughout the day 

or even the year that greatly influence body and mind. 

Bringing our natural landscapes inside helps us stay on 

a circadian rhythm, to follow our physiological day and 

ultimately, stay in sync. 

For instance, if you want to promote a stimulating 

learning environment, you might consider ways to introduce 

elements shown to improve focus like more exposure 

to daylight.

Weaving natural elements into contemporary interiors 

We know that looking at nature lowers our cortisol levels, 

and it is still the natural environment that we feel the most 

profoundly calm in. Therefore it is essential to consider the 

many ways in which we can introduce this powerful concept 

to our interiors. 

susan — Acknowledging that we are deeply connected 

and wired to the rhythm of nature, many human-built 

environments are starting to bring in biophilic elements. 

susan — When you come inside, in some ways, you’re 

taking yourself out of the natural world that you were 

born into. We create spaces and think these are the most 

important, but the reality is, in many ways, that we still 

find ourselves most authentically in nature. 

For example, if you want to generate a feeling of healing 

and restorative quality, explore biophilic design that 

incorporates greenery as well as other natural elements and 

materials into the built environment. This could be a piece 

of furniture in warm oak wood, the use of earth tones, or 

even the humidity of air flowing through a building. 

Our inclination toward soft shapes 

Research has shown that the smooth curves of modernist 

sculptor Jean Arp produce a pleasant sensation in the beholder 

– that we prefer rounded shapes to sharp angles. 

In a similar manner our hands naturally envelop the rotund 

shape of a cup or the arched frame of a chair. 

susan — There are certain shapes we just gravitate 

towards, like the shape of the cup, because our hands 

have shaped it and they can embrace it, hold it. We have 

so many millions of synapses and nerves in our hands 

that connect to our brain and what feels intuitively right. 

Honoring these physiologies is really when I think design 

gets better. When we disregard them, it's also an aesthetic 

experience - everything's aesthetic. But I think there's 

a difference between what really moves you – peak aesthetic 

experiences – and things that are simply utilitarian. 

Embracing tactility 

Of course, we not only perceive the world visually, but 

also sensorily, among others through touch. Tactility, or 

the haptic experience, is an essential part of the neuroaesthetic 

perception of an object or space. Through our 

hands, we can feel the essence of an object, deciphering 

its materiality and how it was made – knowing through 

our hands. 

susan — Our skin is the biggest organ on our body 

and it's so responsive. So you cannot underestimate what 

texture does. We are not only about what something looks 

like. You might be drawn to a certain kind of texture, and 

how it feels when you are engaging with it is incredibly 

powerful. It is much more powerful than seeing it. 

Designing with intention 

We have an incredible toolbox at our disposal, working 

with color, light, objects, sound, scent, textures and more. 

How we wield these all depends on our intention. 

susan — The science that we're doing is informing 

new ways of understanding how to use the same ingredients, 

but use them in different or new ways for an end 

purpose. I think we can get closer to understanding these 

ingredients by marrying science and the arts together.•

Conscious designs — Whenever we develop 

a new product with our designers, we reflect

search for the right materials is an integral 

part of our design process and we put great 

importance on all the materials that comprise 

a design. From the large components, 

such as wood and textile, down to recycled 

materials used in our designs and packaging, 

we consider a material’s origin and 

life cycle. 

Giving New Life To Plastic Waste — The new 

generation of Fiber Chairs is designed with a 

conscious perspective in mind and a wish to 

improve our environmental impact. The Fiber 

Armchair and Side Chair without upholstery 

use a minimum of 80% recycled plastic and 

FSC-certified wood fibers (FSC C028824). 

The Fiber Chair is an essential part of our 

product portfolio and transforming our production 

of it is an ambitious starting point in 

becoming more circular in our consumption 

of raw material. In fact, by switching to recycled 

plastic, we expect to reduce our use of 

virgin plastic by more than 50 tons per year.

Muuto participates in Declare, a platform 

based on transparency that lets you see 

the origins and lifecycle of a product. A 

selection of our furniture is Living Building 

Challenge Red List Approved. 

Muuto is both an FSC-certified and 

PEFC-certified company. The Forest 

Stewardship Council (FSC) aims to ensure 

that forests are managed in a sustainable, 

environmentally responsible manner that 

preserves the natural surroundings, while 

also supporting the local community.

The Air We Breathe Indoor 

Healthier indoor climates — Without 

a doubt, the air we breathe is essential 

for our health. Even for indoor environments, 

where we spend so much of our 

time, the air quality is vital to our sense 

of wellbeing. 

In any space and often impossible to 

see, chemicals are emitted into the air. 

These emissions come from all kinds of 

objects in our everyday lives. The type of 

emissions that can have an adverse effect 

on our health contain what’s called 

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). In 

fact, the majority of VOCs can be found 

at home—in certain types of soaps, perfume 

and cosmetics, cleaning products 

and disinfectants, fuel, paint, plastic and 

the like.

Our Danish HQ, offices and warehouses 

are running on 100% renewable energy. 

A move that lowers our overall carbon 

footprint. It’s an initiative we are in the 

process of incorporating in all our Muuto

In addition to lowering our carbon footprint, 

we have implemented a system 

that tracks our energy consumption and 

carbon emissions across our internal 

operations. From the cars we drive to 

the electricity we use in our offices and 

showrooms. This allows us to continuously

In striving to ensure that our designs are 

produced using safe techniques, by skilled 

workers who operate under healthy conditions, 

we have all our manufacturers 

sign our Code of Conduct. Our Code of 

Conduct is aligned with the UN Global 

Compact of Human Rights and includes 

principles that respect labor laws, human 

rights, ethical conduct as well as the 

environment. Key issues include anticorruption 

policies and prohibiting child 

labor. Because for us, it’s essential that our

A new perspective on the iconic 

shell chair, the Fiber Chair family 

is produced from an innovative 

composite of plastic and wood 

fibers that gives the shell a uniquely 

deep surface with a matte finish and 

soft touch. 

The Fiber Armchair and Side 

Chair without upholstery uses a 

minimum of 80% recycled plastic. 

By substituting at least 80% of the 

virgin plastic in the production of 

its shell, we minimize the use of new 

material, instead of reusing existing 

material a second time around.
