DR ASHLEY Bloomfield’s 

signature is the latest addition 

to Achilles the gnome’s body 

art collection. 

The former Director-General 

of Health added his name 

during a visit last week to 

the Sumner home Achilles 

shares with artist Henry 

Sunderland, who collects 

garden gnomes as symbols for 

environmental protection and 

awareness. 

He coined the acronym 

GNOME – Guarding Naturally 

Over Mother Earth. 

Sunderland is also wellknown 

as the man who cheered 

up Christchurch after the 

February 22, 2011 earthquake 

by encouraging us to put 

flowers in road cones. 

Achilles has travelled the 

globe meeting famous people 

and acquiring their 

signatures. They include the 

Dalai Lama and chimpanzee 

researcher Jane Goodall, 

while here in New Zealand Sir 

Edmund Hillary, Helen Clark, 

Gary Endacott and Jacinda

THE DRIVER of a vehicle that 

rolled 50m down a steep hill is 

“lucky to be alive”. 

Said Senior Constable Anita 

Osborne: “Oh yes, definitely lucky 

to be alive, have you seen the hills 

around here?” 

The Christchurch man’s car 

went airborne as it came off 

Christchurch Akaroa Rd about 

half a kilometre from Hilltop 

Tavern at about 9pm on Sunday. It 

then started rolling down the hill. 

“He’s hit a massive manuka 

tree and that’s stopped him from 

going further . . . otherwise he 

would have continued through a 

paddock until he got to the next 

block of trees,” Osborne said. 

“And lucky that it hit base first 

rather than roof first.” 

Bystanders spotted the man, in 

his mid-40s, standing on the side 

of the road where he had crawled 

up from the wreckage, Osborne 

said. 

The man was wearing his 

seatbelt, she said. He suffered a 

collapsed lung in the crash. 

“[The man] is improving, he 

may be discharged from hospital 

[on Tuesday],” she said.

Pigeon Bay site: Consultation will happen 


PIGEON BAY residents strongly 

opposed to a commercial lease 

proposal for the old Kukupa 

School heritage building will 

be included in the consultation 

process. 

Residents have been 

complaining about a 

lack of consultation following 

the city council’s 

agreement to lease the 

building to kaupapa 

Māori mental health 

provider, Purupuru 

Whetu Trust. 

The city council has 

now confirmed it will 

consult with the community 

before finalising any lease, and 

PWT has agreed to do the same. 

Miscommunication over the 

future of the site has caused 

confusion and ill-feeling in 

the community, with residents 

claiming the documented proposed 

use of the old school – as a 

mental health retreat and camp 

– is unsuitable for the area and 

may cost ratepayers more than 

$1 million, for very little return. 

PWT chief executive Karaitiana 

Tickell, who lives in the 

area, said the trust was under 

the impression the city council 

would be doing formal community 

consultation. He said he 

was then told the trust needed to

The city council has confirmed 

it will consult with the community. 

Head of parks Andrew 

Rutledge said it was always the 

city council’s intention and part 

of its process to do so. 

Rutledge said city council

neighbours to help alleviate 

any concerns, because Tickell 

lives near the school. 

Tickell said PWT was 

always willing to talk to the 

community when it was 

in a position to do so with 

confidence. 

“Now the council has confirmed 

it will lead engagement 

we need to understand their 

plans,” said Tickell. 

“What form our consultation 

takes will be guided by the 

council, but we would be happy 

to meet kanohi ki te kanohi [face 

to face] with the community,” he 

said. 

PWT has hired a consultant 

to help with that process, Tickell 

said. 

Rutledge said the city council 

doesn’t have enough information 

yet to understand PWT’s plans 

or how it proposes to use the 

building. 

“Our staff will formally consult 

with the local community 

in the New Year, once we have 

more information,” Rutledge 

said. 

Kukupa School was built in 

1878, is Category 2 heritage listed 

and, according to city council 

files, is a rare example of an early

retreat centre have been met with community opposition. 

Canterbury school built at a time 

when Pigeon Bay’s population 

was steadily increasing. It was 

extended in 1885. The school roll 

peaked in 1889 with 55 students, 

then declined until it closed in 

1949. After that it was used, for 

many years, as a youth hostel, 

before falling into disrepair. 

“The trust can save this 

building,” Tickell told Bay 

Harbour News last week. 

“Otherwise, it is simply going 

to fall over.”

Former pupil inspires 

with Olympic tales • 

TE RAEKURA Redcliffs School 

may have a few more keen cyclists 

after pupils were treated to a visit 

from former pupil and Olympian 

Ellesse Andrews last week. 

The 22-year-old won three 

gold medals and a silver at the 

Birmingham Commonwealth 

Games earlier this year, after 

gaining a silver medal at the 2020 

Tokyo Olympics held last year. 

Year 7 pupil Joe said it was “an 

amazing experience to have an 

ex-Redcliffs school student come 

back to school and share her stories 

about being a New Zealand 

athlete”. 

Andrews told pupils about her 

career in cycling, “inspiring” 

them with stories of her achievements, 

obstacles and even her 

biggest crash. 

For 12-year-old Joe, the “most 

exciting” part of meeting Andrews 

was getting to hold her 

medals. 

“It was really special for 

all of us. We saw [one of] the 

races when she won gold at the 

Commonwealth Games. It was 

really exciting and inspired us 

to push ourselves and try 

different things.” 

Car crash ‘like a 

washing machine’

Little River chief fire officer 

John Genefaas said they were 

first emergency responders on 

the scene. 

“The car was off the side of the 

road, completely out of sight, but 

the person in it had managed 

to get to the top of the hill and 

he was in one of the bystanders’ 

cars,” he said. 

Police were still investigating 

the cause of the crash. 

When Osborne spoke to Bay 

Harbour News, she was preparing 

to go and pick up pieces of 

the car, which had broken up as 

it rolled down the hill. 

“It’s like a washing machine, 

they just sort of fly out everywhere,” 

she said. 

“The unglamorous side of 

road crashes.” 

Safe speed around schools 

Way safer for everyone 

We’re making it safer around schools and surrounding streets. 

Whether you’re visiting whānau and friends, letting tamariki 

walk, scoot or bike to school, or driving to work or home again, 

you should be able to do it safely. 

Lower speeds save lives and prevent serious injuries. 

Regardless of the cause of a crash, speed is the difference 

between someone being able to walk away relatively 

unharmed or being seriously injured or killed. 

When everyone travels a bit slower, people feel safer to use the 

street and walk, scoot or bike to parks, schools and local shops. 

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency have changed the way speed 

limits are set. This gives us an opportunity to implement an 

area-wide approach for consistency, especially around schools. 

Planned speed changes 

We’re planning to lower speeds around schools to 30km/h 

in Lyttelton, Governors Bay and Diamond Harbour. 

Governors Bay and Diamond Harbour roads will remain at 

50km/h until we look more closely into what the appropriate 

speed is for these settlements (unless the road is outside 

schools, in which case speeds will be reduced to 30km/h).

For birds’ sake, keep dogs off mudflats

IN 2018, the Avon-Heathcote 

Estuary was classified as a 

wetland of “international 

importance”. A prestigious and 

well-deserved title indeed. 

Did you know that 149 different 

bird species have been 

identified in the estuary? Or that 

the estuary and nearby oxidation 

ponds host a number of endemic 

bird species, which are classified 

as vulnerable, declining and/or 

endangered? 

Who does not enjoy watching 

the spoonbills sifting water for 

food, observing cormorants 

sitting along the edge with wings 

spread, drying their feathers, 

seeing the black and white oystercatchers 

digging for cockles or 

the godwits looking for worms? 

Or perhaps you enjoy watching 

the kingfishers perched on rocks 

and tree branches, ready to dive 

down for a “crab dinner”. 

Few people realise that some 

birds can only feed when the

mudflats are not covered by 

water during low tide – when 

their mud source is accessible. 

Whereas other birds will be able 

to feed at low tide during the 

night, not all birds can. So, the 

combination of daylight and exposed 

mudflats provide the only 

window – for a few hours – for 

these birds to feed. 

This is also the time many 

dog owners enjoy walking along 

the estuary. And fair enough, 

as dogs love to run around, and 

dog owners enjoy the freedom 

of space to let their four-legged 

friends off the lead. 

However, the birds see people’s 

pets as predators and aim to stay 

well clear of them. 

When dogs are on lead being 

exercised along paths and walking 

tracks, this does not pose any 

issues. When dogs are let off lead 

to run around the mudflats and, 

even worse, allowed to chase 

birds, this becomes an absolute 

disaster. 

The estuary trust has conducted 

multiple surveys and 

observations of bird behaviour 

to gain ample evidence and concluded 

that, when birds see a dog 

running around, the birds will 

stop feeding and fly away. 

It can take up to 45 minutes 

for birds to regain confidence to 

settle down again and continue 

feeding. 

When this disturbance 

happens once or twice during a 

low tide the birds will have lost 

the chance to feed, as the tide 

returns to cover their feeding 

ground, and they will go hungry 

for the day. 

When this happens a few 

days in a row it means no food 

to gather, so no food for their 

chicks. No food means weight 

loss and, for migratory waterbirds, 

not enough strength come 

winter to fly to warmer areas 

like the North Island, Australia 

or beyond – across the world to 

Alaska in the godwits’ case. 

So please, dog owners, we 

are asking you to consider one 

of the reasons our estuary is 

unique is because of its stunning 

bird life. But our shorebirds are 

disappearing, with numbers 

declining every year. Keep dogs 

off the mudflats and on the lead 

when walking along the estuary. 

There are ample red zone areas 

and dog parks in Christchurch 

where your furry friends can run 

around, have fun, and chase a 

stick or ball – where they do not 

disturb birds. Let’s work together 

on this to keep our estuary a 

wetland of “international importance”. 

If you are not a dog owner 

or are a responsible dog owner 

and you see offenders – where 

dogs are off lead and not under 

effective control – then please 

note the details, such as the 

location, time and date, and 

report this to the city council 

for dog control officers to 

follow up.

THE 12TH annual Little River Drum 

Festival held at the weekend was a big 

success in spite of the poor weather on 

Saturday, but organiser Marcus Puentener 

said it only went ahead this year because 

of a generous grant from the city council’s 

Creative Communities fund. 

More than 100 people attended the 

festival, but it might be the last one, 

Puentener said. 

“We try to keep ticket prices affordable, 

but it is still a boutique festival with 

limited appeal to the general population.” 

He said the festival was a lot of work in 

a busy camping season and was stressful 

to put together. However, it was still very 

much enjoyed. 

The rain meant a temporary change of 

venue on Saturday. 

“We are fortunate to have a community 

hall in the valley, which was used for most 

of the performances and workshops on 

Saturday, then once the rain eased 

the festival moved back to the Little 

River Campground,” Puentener 

said. 

Sunday’s programme culminated with 

a finale by the 30-member Takumi, a 

Japanese taiko drum group. 

A follow-up event will be held at Little 

River this weekend – a boutique music 

festival for women called Birdsong, also 

held at the campground. 

The family-friendly event is a 

celebration of female folk and indie bands 

and musicians, Puentener said. 

Birdsong will offer a relaxed, fun-filled 

afternoon that continues into the evening, 

before turning it up with DJs until 

midnight.

Treasures from the Past: 

Troopship SS Willochra 

ARMISTICE (Remembrance) 

Day on November 11 

commemorates the “eleventh 

hour of the eleventh day of the 

eleventh month” of 1918 and 

the official end of WWI. The 

signing of the armistice in Paris 

was intended to end hostilities 

between the Allies and Germany, 

and was later ratified with the 

signing of the Treaty of Versailles 

in 1919. 

A related search of our online 

collection revealed this poignant 

image of the Willochra at Ōhinehou 

Lyttelton on July 17, 1915. 

A densely packed throng on No. 

3 wharf is pressed between the 

waiting ambulance train and 

the first shipload of ill, walking 

wounded and stretcher cases, 

returning to the South Island 

from the Gallipoli campaign. 

Next of kin were issued second 

class tickets for the train journey 

to meet their particular soldier. 

The Willochra, referred to as 

“HMNZT No 21” on this voyage, 

served alongside other official, 

state of the art hospital ships the 

Maheno and the Marama. 

The Willochra had docked 

in Wellington two days earlier, 

welcomed by huge crowds (in 

part due to a half-day holiday 

being declared) who, according

to newspaper reports, were initially 

ecstatic as those men able 

to walk proceeded to vehicles 

waiting for them; then silenced 

and sombre as serious stretcher 

cases were disembarked. 

There is no denying the heartfelt 

fervour with which veterans 

were welcomed home. As men 

able to travel made their way 

home, even in small rural towns, 

they were greeted by enthusiastic 

welcomes. 

This outpouring is hardly 

surprising considering so many 

New Zealanders had a relative 

or friend serving at that time; 

nearly 100,000 New Zealanders 

served overseas during WWI, 

approximately nine per cent of 

the population. 

The Willochra’s entry to Whakaraupō 

Lyttelton Harbour that 

afternoon in 1915 was a noisy 

one: “The vessel came up the 

harbour very slowly, tendered by 

the tug. As she pushed her nose 

athwart the moles a big steam 

whistle from the Athenic hooted 

a welcome, and the chorus was 

taken up by her sister liners, the 

Corinthic and Delphic and half a 

score of other vessels, the Paloona 

adding her siren.”

The SS Willochra was built 

in 1912-1913 for the Adelaide 

Steamship Company by W 

Beardmore & Co of Glasgow, 

along with two identical sister 

ships, the SS Warilda (1911) and 

the SS Wandilla (1912). Weighing 

7714 GRT, with a length 

of 125.45m, a beam of 17.25m 

and powered by two quadruple 

expansion steam engines, these 

cruisers were able to reach 16 

knots (30 km/h). 

Originally chartered by the 

Union Steamship Company, the 

Willochra was requisitioned by 

the Royal New Zealand Navy as 

a troopship in 1914, undertaking 

at least 20 voyages carrying 

NZEF Reinforcements to the 

Suez Canal and returning with 

soldiers whose war was over. 

On the journey to the field of 

war, she was so tightly loaded 

with men and equipment that 

outbreaks of infection caused 

concern, in spite of most soldiers 

being vaccinated for smallpox, 

cholera and typhoid.

In 1918, the British Royal 

Navy in turn requisitioned the 

ship and outfitted her in dazzle 

camouflage (see https://www. 

teuaka.org.nz/news/dazzleships-of-lyttelton). 

Her final 

war service was repatriation 

of German prisoners of war to 

Europe. 

Post war in 1919, the Willochra 

was sold and operated by first 

the Quebec Steamship Company, 

and subsequently the Bermuda 

and West Indies Steamship 

Company. Refitted for 400 first 

class passengers and renamed 

Fort Victoria, it was under this 

name that she met her fate. 

Sailing from New York to 

Hamilton, Ontario in December 

1929, she anchored to wait 

out a dense sea fog and was 

struck in her port side by the SS 

Algonquin, another liner on a 

voyage between Galveston, Texas 

and New York. All on board 

were rescued by the United 

States Coast Guard, but the ship 

was critically damaged and she 

sank later that day, her wreck 

still lying on the seafloor to this 

day.

Haval joins the hybrid revolution 

EVEN THOUGH Haval has 

only been in the New Zealand 

automotive market for just five 

years, its impact must been as seen 

as significant given in this industry 

that is a relatively short space of 

time. 

Credit for its success must be 

laid squarely in the hands of the 

distributor’s dealer network. In 

Christchurch Haval is managed by 

an enthusiastic team and they have 

capitalised on success they gleaned 

when Great Wall arrived in the city 

in 2012. 

Haval is part of the giant Great 

Wall conglomerate, a Chinese 

company that is no stranger to the 

automotive industry, it has been 

building cars and trucks since 1984 

and together it and Haval dovetail 

nicely with a raft of commercial 

and family-friendly models. 

Mostly, though, Haval is about 

sport utility vehicles – H6 and 

Jolion, the latter an SUV available 

in four specification variants listing 

from $29,990. The pricing structure 

is one of the ingredients that has 

made Haval a popular seller here in 

Christchurch, the brand represents 

value, but you also get amazing 

value within the product. 

This evaluation focuses on a 

newcomer to the Jolion badge 

and it is a hybrid. It’s not a plug-in 

hybrid but more of what you would 

find in, dare I say it, Toyota’s hybrid 

system. 

Put simply, there is an engine and 

motor, the four-cylinder 1.5-litre 

unit drives the front wheels and 

charges a battery pack providing 

power to the electric motor that, in 

turn, assists the engine to accelerate 

and maintain pace. 

The Jolion Ultra hybrid sits in 

the market at $43,490, that’s a price 

that will lure many, it is also even 

more tempting when you consider 

you’ll also get a $2026 rebate back 

from the Government as part of its 

Clean Car Programme. 

It must also be said that the 

Jolion in this form has everything. 

It’s high in tech as well as 

having features for comfort and 

convenience. The layout is clean, 

tidy and comprehensive with 

enough digital depth to keep a 

Boeing pilot happy. While the 

graphics are extensive, it’s an 

intuitive and user-friendly system. 

Once familiar, the Jolion is as easy 

to drive as any SUV in today’s 

market. 

What’s more, it is familyfriendly 

in terms of comfort and 

convenience. Even at just 4.5m it’s a 

true five-seater with onboard space 

to keep five adults comfortable and 

contained safely. If you have cargo 

to carry there’s room for 390-litres 

behind the rear seats, with them 

folded flat that area extends to 

1069-litres. 

At the other end sits a 1497cc 

engine. This is the same unit 

that powers the rest of the Jolion 

range except that it doesn’t get the 

turbocharger of its stablemates. It 

doesn’t need it, when you combine 

the outputs of the petrol engine and 

the electric motor there’s 139kW

on tap, enough power to tackle any 

of today’s driving situations. Add in 

the strong bottom end torque flow 

(375Nm) you have figures that are 

well up to par. 

The hybrid system also has one 

other major benefit. That’s the fuel 

usage figures. Haval claims a fivelitre 

per 100km combined cycle 

average, during my evaluation time 

the readout was listing around that 

figure largely due to the fact that 

during majority of the time I had in 

the evaluation car it was at highway 

speed. 

Of course, this has distance 

benefits. When I picked up the 

vehicle it was showing just half a 

tank of fuel, yet it had well over 

400km to run before the tank was 

empty. On that basis, up to 1000km 

could be achievable between fillups 

if sensible driving techniques 

are followed. To help boost fuel 

thrift the driveline incorporates 

an economy drive mode, it is one 

of four drive modes that can be 

chosen, depending on the journey 

ahead; the others are normal, sport 

or snow mode, the latter to aid 

traction on slippery surfaces. 

The Jolion in this form isn’t 

disgraced either in terms of 

acceleration. It will make 100km/h 

from a standstill in 8.2sec and will 

power through a highway overtake 

(80-120km/h) in around 6sec.

I didn’t travel as far as I normally 

would, but I did head a long way 

west taking in some of my favourite 

roads near Hororata, returning 

home through Dunsandel and 

Lincoln. The Jolion in this form is 

a superb highway cruiser, it is quiet 

and the suspension offers a perfect 

combination of compliance and 

comfort. 

It also handles typically of a 

modern SUV, and credit must 

be given to the suspension 

engineering team who have created 

that soft feel beneath, but not at the 

cost of wayward body movement in 

a corner. The Jolion sits quite tall at
