Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,
maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent
dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on
what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked
about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served
us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land.
The place: Dan and Nicole had just arrived back in town from a
weekend at Hershey Park in Pennsylvania to see the Christmas lights —
check them out if you’re making holiday plans — and cooking was not
an option. We thought 5 West Pub in North Cape May would be a great
spot to pick up some dinner.
The vibe: It wasn’t a terribly busy Sunday night when we arrived,
but boy was that bar full for some football. The sounds was on and the
beer was flowing. 5 West has the NFL ticket and seven big screens to
watch the games. They also offer weekly specials, making them a great
football headquarters this season.
The West Pole: 5 West has some festive plans this holiday season
out on their patio. The West Pole kicks off Friday, November 25 with live
music from 6:30-9:30pm and a local vendor to shop from 5-9pm. The
music and vendors change each weekend with something new every
night. The patio will be open 4-11pm these nights — their full schedule
of music and vendors can be seen on their Facebook page.
The food: It took almost no time looking over the menu to decide
what we wanted. Nicole was dying for their meatballs appetizer (served
with garlic bread, which she forgot about but was THRILLED to find.)
For dinner, Nicole enjoyed a delicious turkey club which they PACKED
with roasted turkey — we love a think sandwich over here. Dan went
with the 5 West burger which he’s never had before. It was definitely a
good choice... *see the cheese wiz mustache he acquired within the 35
seconds it took him to devour it.* 10/10 recommend for the meal and
how quickly it was ready.
The takeaway: 5 West Pub is open Tue-Sun from 11:30am to
10pm with live music Wed-Sun 6 to 9pm. They’re a great local spot on
Bayshore Road and open year-round. Check out their happy hour menu
online and celebrate the holidays with them every weekend at the West
Pole — you might catch a few of your favorite vendors out the patio to
grab a few Christmas gifts for friends and family.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
It took nine weeks, but it was nice to
finally see all those Facebook Cowboys
fans crawl out from under their rocks to
talk smack on the Eagles. I get it. They
haven’t been relevant since Bush was in
office, but I really hope they find a way to claw
their way to nine wins (which the Eagles have
currently) and eke into the playoffs so we can
beat them by 30 in the first round.
After my expert armchair managing of
both the Eagles (whom I predicted would
make the Super Bowl, which is going to happen
so don’t worry) and Phillies (whom I predicted
would get their act together and make
the World Series) I now implore the 76ers to
PLEASE do whatever they can to pry Kevin
Durant from the Nets because the team, as
currently constructed, is easily the worst of
the post-Process era and, less forgivable, the
most boring. And, if you think the coach isn’t
the problem, I suggest you take a look across
the parking lot at the local baseball team and
what they did after jettisoning their coach.
Phillies Off-Season Wish List: Trea
Turner at shortstop, a top-end starter so
we don’t have to go into GAME FOUR OF
THE WORLD SERIES WONDERING WHO’S
GOING TO PITCH and 100% take a flyer on
Cody Bellinger as a 1B/OF sub-in while Bryce
Harper recovers from arm surgery. If anyone
can remind him how to hit, it’s Kevin Long.
After four good-faith attempts, I’m giving
up on trying to get into Yellowstone. Feels to me
like Dallas in a different skin with no one near
as oily and charming as J.R. Ewing.
Boy Do I Feel Like A Jerk of the Week (I
could actually use this headline every week in
Undertow, but for this week it’s…): A couple
of times over the last few years I’ve poked fun
at the plywood fireman cut-outs on Lincoln
Avenue as you head towards the ferry, how
they look like something out of a children’s
bad dream, the way the paint is fading, and
the wood is eroding. Well, Saturday, while
checking out at the North Cape May Acme,
our kindly cashier asked, “Do you remember
your article?’ I braced myself as this is not
generally how a HAPPY conversation starts,
and answered, “Yes, which one?” “The one
about the plywood firemen…” she continued
and explained that it was her house I’d been
picking on. She couldn’t bear to take them
down and fix them up, she explained, as they
are there in honor of her late husband, Chester
Czescik, a former Philadelphia fireman. So,
while I feel like a smacked-ass for poking fun
at a memorial, I was at least able to let Mary
Lou tell me about Chester. The universe, man.
I want to like this new Will Ferrell-Ryan

soon, I really do. The problem is, I’ve seen a

to visit my wife, Cathrine, at West
End Garage where she and Cindy
Benigno were representing Cape
Island Foods on West Cape May
Hospitality night, I was lucky
to catch Cathrine’s version of
“Dream A Little Dream” on the
radio at 101.5 WCFA. This is the
third song I’ve heard in the wild
since recording our show with
Annie Walsh in September. Two
Cathrine, one Terry. I’m sensing
a little bias here. Though, in fairness,
everyone likes her better.
Speaking of lovely local lady
singers, local chanteuse Maddie
Hogan’s new song, “Beautiful
Temporary,” is out now on all the
usual places you listen to and buy
music. There’s even a cute music
video on YouTube though, disappointingly,
she is not in her pajamas.
(Congratulations, Maddie!)
I can always tell when someone
has slept in my bed. The delicate
arrangements of my blankets
and pillows just feels a bit… off.
And if you’re scoffing at me for
having a delicate arrangement of
blankets and pillows in my bed
you know damn well you have
one, too, so stop your fooling.
I wanted to see Where The
Crawdads Sing in the theater but
missed out, so I was excited to
catch it on Netflix the other night
and… I’m glad I didn’t waste my
money. It’s not bad. Exactly. It’s
just… not good. I wanted Fried
Green Tomatoes-level female-centric
Oscar bait, what I got was a
gussied-up Lifetime movie. You
could set your watch by the predictable
“shocking” plot twists.
Speaking of Not-Good movies,
wew lad was Black Panther:
Wakanda Forever a slog. After a
touching first 15 minutes that
paid fitting tribute to Chadwick
Boseman, for the next two-plus
hours I kept waiting for something
to happen. I mean, stuff
happened, there were scenes and
costumes and acting and stuff,
but none of it really meant anything.
And, while I’m certainly no
Adonis, I feel like the guy playing
Prince Namor could have hit the
gym a few times before filming
began. I mean, Chris Pratt and
Paul Rudd got totally ripped for
their Marvel turns. Anyway, not
recasting T’Challa was a fatal
mistake. I hated this movie.
But I didn’t hate every movie
I saw this week. I loved Weird: The
Al Yankovic Story on Roku. I had no
idea what to expect and what I got
was a delightful, Airplane-esque
take on the man who brought us
“Like A Surgeon” and “Eat It.”
Daniel Radcliffe (whose casting,
I think, was part of the joke) goes
full bore as the title character and
there are about 100 great cameos
that will have you pausing and
rewinding. Weird is wonderful.
Stanley Tucci (Shall We
Dance) is a great actor. David
Tennant (Broadchurch) is a great
actor. Their Netflix show, Inside
Man, is not great. As a two-hour
movie I might have bought into it.
At four episodes it felt stretched
beyond reason. There’s a great,
meaty, Hannibal Lecter-type role
out there for Tucci. This is not it.
(Stanley Tucci and I once auditioned
for the same part. He got it
and earned an Oscar nod. I didn’t
and watched him at the Oscars.
So who is the real winner here?)
Lastly this week, after a
four-year/five-summer run, my
weekend musical residency at
Exit Zero has come to an end.

for standing up there with me.
And Tim Joyce for getting it all
started. Hundreds of gigs, thousands
of songs, and I enjoyed
singing every one of them for
you. The Terry O’Brien Trio is
at the Brown Room at Congress
Hall on Sunday, November 27,
12-4pm, then make our Mudhen
debut on February 4. Aside from a
couple of private Christmas parties,
every date before, after and

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
Cape May hosts some special gift of
the season every month. November
means vultures, more specifically,
the great rafts of migrating Turkey
Vultures that dominate the sky over
the Hawk Watch Platform. Those other late
seasons have their hopes pinned on seeing
a Golden Eagle. Not me. My sights are calibrated
for vultures, wobbling across the sky,
like dark bodied, silver winged clipper ships.
Some people consider them loathsome.
Their dietary focus on carrion seems ghoulish
to many. But without vultures, all those
road-killed deer would turn roadsides into an
ungulate necropolis. Standing over some carcass,
the vulture is an unlovely hunch-backed,
shuffling apparition. But when the broadwinged
birds take to the air, they move with
poetic grace. Tight-rope walkers in the sky.
Daunted by the 12 miles of thermal
impoverished bay, 100s of vultures may gather
over the lighthouse waiting for some bold
vulture to lead the way. Most choose to turn
north and circumnavigate the bay. And some
return to try it again under more favorable
winds. Vultures also make great bellwethers.
Their dark bodies and massed ranks catch
the eye. Scanning through their ranks, hawk
watchers are able to locate the smaller paler
hawks that are taking advantage of the vulture’s
thermal finding skills.
Despite their structural and behavioral
similarities, vultures are not ranked among
the birds of prey. North America’s three vul-
ture species, Turkey, Black and California
Condor are more closely related to storks
whose heads, like vultures, are featherless.
Condors have not been in New Jersey since
the last ice sheet left town but Black Vulture, a
southeastern resident, moved into our region
20 years ago and stick around all year.
Except for their red heads and horn-colored
bills, Turkey Vultures resemble the noble
wild turkey, but where turkeys strut, vultures
hop. Black Vultures have gray heads and short
tails. In mixed flocks the smaller size of Black
Vulture is immediately apparent as is its hurried
wing beat. Turkey Vultures are more
tranquil aloft, their wings uplifted as if moved
to prayer.
Roosting vultures may spread their wings
to absorb the sun’s rays. Highly thermal
dependent, on overcast days the birds may
not forage at all. It is the limited hours of winter
sunlight that sets the northern limits of the
vulture’s range. So if the skies are clear and
the winds northerly, why not saunter down to
the hawk watch and catch the vulture parade.

What do you do with the upper
hand? Have you ever had the
upper hand, you know where you
clearly have control over another
person or a situation? What do
you do? What would you do? For some, it’s a
cause for celebration — and a call to protect
the upper hand no matter what the cost. For
others, it’s a time to lend a hand up — a call for
compassion or forgiveness.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has been one
of the most anticipated releases of the year. In
many ways, the film centers on the question
“What do you do with the upper hand?” In the
story, the ultra-powerful material vibranium
gives the country of Wakanda an upper hand
on the world stage. It is a coveted metal that
has other world powers searching for it, which
leads to the depths of the ocean. That’s where
the troubles begin.
The film does more than feature a moving
tribute to the first Black Panther (King
T’Challa), played by the incomparable
Chadwick Boseman — it is steeped in his

in 2020 at 43. He left behind a body of work
including several impressive biopics of major
figures in history. He was as noble as the
regal character he played in the first Black

Wakanda is confronted with a formidable
enemy under the sea. His name is Namor,
and fans of the comic book have been waiting
for this conflicted hero to be adapted in the
movies. And Namor delivers. His winged feet,
speed and agility are all depicted boldly in this
film. His presence is worth the price of admission
— as is the rise of a new Black Panther.
No spoilers here, most of this is in the trailer.
Namor is played by Tenoch Huerta, a
Mexican actor with many film credits from his
home country. Letitia Wright plays Shuri, the
sister of T’Challa. Angela Basset plays Shuri’s
mother, the queen. The cast turns in amazing
work with costumes from Ruth Carter, who
will no doubt receive another Oscar nomination
(she won for her work in the first film).
What do we do with the upper hand?
Some see it as a time to oppress and dominate.
This can take centuries in unraveling
and reconciling profoundly tragic injustice.
Others see the upper hand as a time to teach
and support — to raise the standard for equity
and kindness. This sequel is an example of
a franchise that gained the upper hand and
leveraged it for even more.

Something happens when the clocks
change. Experts say we don’t need
more sleep during the darker days of
the year, but many adults sleep an
“extra” hour nightly from November
to February. There’s nothing wrong with that
as long as you’re generally sleeping between
7 and 9 hours, but it can make you feel as if
you do nothing but work and sleep. Consider
taking up a craft to get you through the winter.
A new hobby, preferably performed
by a bright light in the evening, can help
you embrace the darkness. Crafting boosts
self-confidence, because you — eventually —
end up with a finished product. It’s meditative,
and helps to reduce stress. Most crafts involve
fine motor skills, which keep your brain and
fingers nimble. You’ll get frustrated, but be
patient with yourself, and don’t be afraid to
redo something if you make a mistake. Don’t
be too ambitious — if you’re a true beginner,
now is not the time to start a complicated
craft for a Christmas gift, so you might pick
a Valentine’s theme. Don’t be too hesitant,
either — you can do a lot with that extra hour.
Consider revisiting a craft from your
childhood, like model cars or seashell crafts.
Start with a visit to the toy store for a kit
aimed at children. Many crafts begin with a
trip to Swain’s — they have plain garland you
can enhance, glue to attach your seashells to
a piece of driftwood, wire to hang your creations
and spray paint to turn a garage sale
find into a work of art. Visit Stitch by Stitch at
315 Ocean Street to explore this year’s hottest
craft — cross stitch. Counted cross stitch is
said to be the best place for newcomers, but
their experts can help you decide where to
begin, and they can help you display your
finished project. Consider knitting or crocheting
with the help of YouTube videos and
a curbside pickup from Fiber Arts Yarn Shop,
24 Route 47 South, Cape May Courthouse.
They offer a basic kit for beginners along with
a knit superhero kit that’s way more fun than
the traditional beginner’s scarf or dishcloth.

people and is eager to spend time with her
humans. Her family loved her but could no
longer take care of her. She is great with children
and has a gentle demeanor, but lots of
energy. Darla is brushing up on her manners
and leash skills. She would be best with a slow
introduction to dogs and cats.
MONEY is a handsome and happy two-yearold
boy. He came to the shelter when his
owner could no longer care for him. Money
loves running in the yard and is slowly learning
what to do with his toys. He has excellent
leash manners and is very treat motivated
making any training easy and fun. He needs a
slow introduction to other dogs and cats.
GHOST RIDER came to the shelter as a stray
but has learned to warm up quickly to the
humans in his life. He is a young dog and
learning manners which are improving daily.
Ghost Rider would need a slow introduction
to other dogs and cats before he’s comfortable.
He would be a wonderful companion to anyone
that opens their heart to him.

JAKE came to the shelter after being found
in the reeds on Jake’s Landing Road. He was
found by a walker who gained his trust. Jake
is believed to have been picked up by a hawk
at one point and is in need of a safe and loving
home. He is very shy but is warming up
to people with time. Jake would do well in a
home with other cats.
MATILDA is about five years old and was left
in a neighborhood begging for food for nearly
two weeks. Animal Control was called, and
they brought her to the shelter. She is now in
good health and in need a safe, indoor home.
Matilda is spayed and up to date on all vaccinations.

VERSACE came to the shelter during the
summer with four other kittens. He is a roughand-tumble
boy who loves to play. Versace is
ready to burn off his energy outside of his cage
