How privileged I’ve been to have worked with

so many travellers and explorers from the

Middle East over the past 2 decades. I have

discovered a brotherhood and unbelievable culture.

boosted by massive investment from the Middle East.

South Africa’s recent presidential visit to the Middle

East confirming a strong message of continued

bilateral cooperation and strategic partnerships.

Having traveled with delegations on business

missions, and also with very relevant private

individuals, exploring and discovering the magical

wonders of our Continent, brought me remarkable

joy over the years, and lead to the birth of this

publication.

The mission of this publication is to encourage

relationships between Middle East and Africa. With

so much to offer, it is no wonder that more and more

travellers are setting out to explore Africa’s finest.

This publication aims to not only intrigue readers with

amazing destinations, activities and products, but also

to present a selection of top service providers to help

navigate unfamiliar territory.

With saturated western markets, I believe that the

African continent meets the need for high return

investment opportunities. In recent years African

property and telecoms sectors have featured

significantly in the news. Tourism sector also being

Truly blessed with Africa’s blood pumping trough my

veins, we see the opportunity of offering the best of

Africa, and trust that this initiative will lead to many

new found relationships & collaborations.

Africa and Middle East share an unique history of

trade, and I believe in a future of opportunities...with

the best still to come.

Please follow us on social media for articles from our

network and members (unique investment properties,

travel deals and other investment opportunities.)

I thank all advertisers, contributors for sharing our

vision and wish prosperity to ALL.

“Inshallah” / God willing

Rocco Olivier

I’d like to give a big thank you to all of our

members for making this exciting new travel

collaboration a reality and to thank you for

your support; without you none of this would

have been possible.

The Middle East is fast emerging as global

leaders in the travel and tourism industry and

it is a pleasure to get in on the ground floor

and establish long term relationships with

key people from the region by strengthening

outbound travel and creating awareness of

the inbound travel offerings and business

opportunities the region has to offer.

Hunting as a conservation tool will be

instrumental in the Middle East as the region

continues to implement new strategies to

reintroduce wildlife and what a privilege it is

to be able to showcase and share some of the

best hunter based conservation projects on the

planet with like-minded people who share our

love and passion for wildlife and nature.

Our featured hunting outfitters and members

are not only some of the best and most

experienced operators in the industry but

they are also leaders in conservation, through

sustainable utilisation.

Welcome to the Premier Edition of Bespoke

Expeditions.

We are ecstatic to introduce you to our first class

members, our team, and our plan to focus on connecting

the Middle East to all the wonderful attractions that

Africa has to offer in our

Edition.

The exciting model of sourcing members to join our

team was not only challenging but also a great journey

working and connecting with the right people, those who

align so perfectly with our vision and goal.

It was of utmost importance to attract not only the right

members but also the best that Africa has to offer, and

I believe we have most certainly achieved this goal. We

have an exciting 2023 ahead of us and we truly look

forward to making a huge success of our marketing

endeavours by working hand in hand with our members

to provide our new clients from the Middle East with

Bespoke Expeditions to Africa.

Wildlife management, ethical hunting and

the use of wildlife resources, and the revenue

generated to help protect and preserve

our heritage and sustain healthy wildlife

numbers, remain better than any other form of

conservation.

It’s an honour to be a part of this journey and

I’m thrilled to share it with all of you.

Lastly but most importantly, a big thank

you to my family for all the unwavering and

unconditional love and continued support.

Finally, to my wife and son, Christelle & Cobus,

the constant travelling and being away as

much as I am is never easy, but knowing that I

have you as my home to come back to is what

makes it all worth it.

CELEBRATING 75 YEARS

OF EXISTENCE

The Association of Arts Pretoria was established on 27

September 1947. The Association’s aim is to host at least

thirty exhibitions per year, whether pottery, sculpture,

painting or experimental. One of the most exciting

projects driven by the Pretoria Arts Association is the

Sasol New Signatures Art Competition. This competition

creates a platform for new and undiscovered artists to

kickstart their careers. Many South African artists have

benefitted greatly from this competition and are now

well known locally and abroad.

In honour of the 75 th anniversary of the Association

of Arts Pretoria and the 50 th anniversary of Ceramics

Southern Africa, an exhibition entitled Fifty Pots for

Fifty Years were held at the Association of Arts Pretoria

from 29 October to 19 November 2022. The exhibition

honoured the founding members of both associations

for their vision and dedication in supporting the visual

arts in South Africa over the past decades. On display

was fifty selected ceramic works by members of

Ceramics Southern Africa, Gauteng Region, along with

pieces from two guest Western Cape artists, Ralph

Johnson and Hennie Meyer.

He moved to Johannesburg in 2013 with the hope of

fulfilling his ambition as an artist. Since he has resided

in Johannesburg, he had the opportunity to work with

Bronwen Findlay by running several mosaics projects

which include the Mandela Children’s Hospital and

a ceramic art project at the American International

School.

He works in earthenware clay and uses underglaze paint,

which is water based and glazed with a transparent

glaze before being fired in a kiln. Underglaze is a

method of decorating pottery in which the decoration

is applied to the surface before it is glazed. Because

the glaze will subsequently cover it, such decoration is

completely durable, and it also allows the production

of pottery with a surface that has a uniform sheen.

Alex works with three themes: Divine, Flora and

Butterfly. The Divine design is inspired by South

African wildlife, the Flora design is inspired by South

African flowers and the Butterfly design is inspired by

butterfly wings in a full design.

Also included on this exhibition was the ceramic works

of Alex Shabalala.

Alex Shabalala is originally from KwaZulu-Natal

who now works from his own ceramic studio in

Johannesburg. He joined Ardmore Ceramic studio in

October 2008, where he strove to translate printmaking

techniques into his clay painting and developed his

own unique graphic style. In 2010 he was selected to

work extensively on designing a limited-edition range

of dinnerware for Ardmore - the Ardmore Design

Collection. In the same year his design of African

wildlife and flora was selected for the commemorative

Relais & Chateaux Plate.

TSWALU

Savannah Biome, South Africa

Tswalu’s remote location in the southern Kalahari offers the ultimate off-thebeaten-track

escape. From the landmark Korannaberg mountains to the grassy,

red sand dunes rippling away to the horizon, this vast tract of privately owned

wilderness in the Northern Cape is at the forefront of sustainable ecotourism

in South Africa. As a fellow member of The Long Run, Tswalu’s sustainability

journey is focused on the four key areas of conservation, community, culture

and commerce. The reserve is first and foremost an ambitious conservation

project that funds numerous research projects, geared towards understanding

and conserving key species within the Kalahari ecosystem. Research informs all

major conservation decisions, playing a vital role in revealing fascinating aspects

of the reserve’s ecology and its remarkable biodiversity. Guaranteed access to a

private vehicle, guide and tracker provides guests with the freedom and flexibility

to explore diverse, game-rich habitats always with unlimited time at sightings.

On a Tswalu safari, time and space are the true luxuries. Besides day and night

game drives, complimentary activities include nature walks, animal tracking, horse

riding, stargazing, dune breakfasts, sleeping out under the stars, and spending

time with habituated meerkats. With accommodation for a maximum of 28 guests

at the Motse camp and Tarkuni homestead, Tswalu has the lowest guest footprint

in South Africa. The Oppenheimer family’s low-impact, high-value approach to

sustainable ecotourism helps fund the vital conservation work that is at the heart

of this noble project to restore the southern Kalahari for future generations.

ROCKFIG SAFARI LODGE

Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, South Africa

Set in the heart of Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, adjacent to the famous Kruger National

Park, RockFig Safari Lodge is well situated for forays into the African wilds.

RockFig Safari Lodge features just six suites, providing an intimate experience for their individual

guests and may be booked for exclusive-use bookings for families or groups of friends. The

sense of place comes through strongly, with the colour palette in each room inspired by the

purple and green hues of local birds and plants. Although guests are always conscious of where

they are, no stone is left unturned in the quest for comfort and luxury, with each suite featuring

both indoor and outdoor showers, a private verandah ideal for romantic candlelit dinners, a

minibar and a bath. Specially commissioned watercolour paintings add notes of cool beauty,

and – as with every space in the lodge – the aim is always to delight the guests who’ll stay here.

There’s a thoughtfulness to the decor, with the emphasis being on the guest experience – but

also an unmissable sense that it’s the natural beauty of the Timbavati bushveld that’s the true

hero.

Game drives rank among the quintessential Timbavati experiences, and the guides and trackers

at RockFig Safari Lodge pride themselves on providing incredible, safe but close wildlife

encounters. Timbavati is Big Five country, and as many of the RockFig trackers hail from the

area they’re able to put all their local knowledge to work to ensure the best possible viewing

opportunities.

LUSH PRIVATE GAME LODGE

Pilanesberg National Park, South Africa

Lush is a contemporary lodge, shaped around the environment. In fact, it is a shepherd’s

tree – sheltered from the wind and warmed by the morning sun, between hill and

plain – that marked the position of the main lodge. Its minimalistic décor and natural

finishes put the focus on the view, which at once draws you outside. With this in mind,

multi-level interior-flowing-to-exterior spaces are designed for outdoor living. Spend

time between safari activities reading or playing board games on the couches, sipping

coffee in the bar lounge – a favourite spot to rendezvous at any time of day – or

stargazing from the deck.

Choose from five suites and one brand new deluxe suite that opened this year. Covered

walkways lead to each, interspersed between the trees and with their own private

entrances.

Wilderness-inspired interiors, innovative use of space, and extended fold-back glass

doors mean you feel immersed in nature even when in your suite. Their décor gives a

nod to the Lupini’s Italian heritage, though much of the furnishing is local, supporting

South African artisans. Designed with every comfort in mind, your Suite is not simply a

base from which to explore the surrounds, but a living space.

Lush guarantees you authentic safari adventures to write home about. Exclusive

traversing in Black Rhino Reserve and the Pilanesberg’s Wilderness Area offers the

opportunity to explore an untouched environment. Access also to the public section of

the park increases your chances of encountering a large variety of wildlife.

THE HOUGHTON HOTEL

Gauteng, South Africa

Best Luxury Hotel & Spa - South Africa

Based in the heart of South Africa, the Houghton Hotel brings African excellence and culture to the fore of

the hospitality industry. Run by CEO Arnold Forman and the rest of the Houghton family, it wants to be a

guest’s home away from home. With a social architecture that is as well crafted and diligently realised as

the establishment itself, it strives to deliver the best customer service by way of the region’s most discrete,

empathic, and forward-thinking hospitality team.

As a luxury hotel and spa, Houghton Hotel has created a sanctuary for local and international visitors alike,

serving both the tourism industry and the local community with the best of South African hospitality.

Fundamentally, its warm smiles, serene atmosphere, and friendly team allow guests to enjoy a comforting

stay that guarantees the utmost comfort from the moment they check in to the moment they check out.

Moreover, its picturesque view of the surrounding skyline ensures that guests are situated in a space where

they can fully immerse themselves in the local region; with good connections for local people staying with

it for the sake of an easy commute and for international visitors looking to explore, it has been ‘built with

your aspirations in mind’.

Indeed, its philosophy throughout its operation has made such things possible, and it is the solid foundation

this has created upon which everything else has been built. A people’s business above all else, it has been

created by and for real, genuine, and caring people, and this is an integral part of its philosophy; without

its staff, their hard work, and love of impeccable service, it could not deliver the outstanding quality of

hospitality that it does. Nominally, it wishes to show instead of tell its clients that during their stay, its hotel

becomes their home.

Abelana is home to a rich diversity of fauna and flora, from the hippos and crocodiles that make the Selati River their

home and the famed Big Five – elephant, rhino, leopard, lion and buffalo – as well as cheetah and wild dog, which

are occasional visitors, to an impressive number of endemic bird species including the African fish eagle, peregrine

falcon, thick-billed cuckoo, and bat hawk.

Abelana Game Reserve offers guests the chance to enjoy a unique feeling of exclusivity while on safari while offering

exceptional value for money.

ABELANA SAFARI CAMP

Abelana Game Reserve is a 15,000ha (36,000 acre) Big Five game reserve adjacent to the Greater Kruger National

Park and the Selati Game Reserve, close to the town of Phalaborwa in South Africa’s beautiful Lowveld – the country’s

prime big game region.

Abelana Safari Camp is located in an elevated position in the remote southern part of the reserve amid spectacular

granite outcrops known locally as “koppies” and overlooks a large watering hole below the camp’s expansive viewing

deck. Enjoy a small, intimate safari camp accommodating eight guests in five Meru-style tents.

The views over the bushveld are spectacular and daily guided walks and game drives allow guests to explore large

tracts of bush in absolute exclusivity.

The Meru-style tents are simple yet comfortable and well-appointed, offering an authentic safari experience. The

tents are all equipped with beds offering a twin or king size configuration with lighting provided by solar power.

Because we are located in a water-scarce region each tent is equipped with a shower rather than a bath, with hot

water provided by gas geysers always available.

Food is home-cooked, often over an open fire, using locally sourced fresh produce. The camp does not offer a luxury

culinary experience as the menu is a set affair, but we do try and cater to individual preferences provided we have

prior notice of dietary requirements at the time of booking.

The camp has a large tented mess and lounge area with an honour bar system and a range of reference books. There

is a charging station for camera batteries and phones. WiFi is not available due to the remote location.

ZAR 18,000,000.00

from USD 375,000

The answer to a question, “How can we earn a

living in the BUSH?” started a fascinating,

interesting 40 year rollercoaster journey to

date. The answer was “a Crocodile farm”.

After a 1982 CITES conference in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) 5 farms

were established in South Africa. Farming was and is only

permitted from Captive Bred stock. Practical handling and

farming knowledge on Nile Crocodiles was severely limited so

trial and error was the modus operandi. ”One good bite instils

substantial knowledge.”

Pioneers Peter and Sheila Watson purchased 5 hectares of dense

subtropical virgin bush, near Ballito, Kwa-Zulu Natal and

established Crocodile Creek. Peter is the only one of the original

individuals still operating and looking for new opportunities with

Crocodiles.

Sound sexually mature Crocodiles producing large viable

clutches are 15 years of age. Rearing time depending on size of

skin marketed 2 to 4 years. It is a sustainable long term business

with many varied avenues for beneficiation and exploitation.

Peter’s son, Craig, has added his construction knowledge, flair

and experience to put his mark on the operation. Right hand man

Sean Le Clus has been a tremendous asset over the past 37 years

with his constant enthusiasm, people skills and love and care of

reptiles.

Hundreds of thousands of primary school children have had an

informative, exciting, learning experience, which bodes well for

future conservation of Crocodiles rather than the superstition and

fear that is associated with Crocodiles and snakes usually results

in “Blala” Kill.

Numerous individuals and school teachers have commented “the

best entertaining and amusing Crocodile experience we have

ever had.” High praise especially when this is their 3rd to 25th

visit.

Internationally Crocodile Tourism has blossomed. Australia and

France are examples. Crocodile Creek has supplied Zoos and

Parks in USA, Canada, Europe, Canary Islands and farms in

Africa. Involved in design, planning, construction of operations in

Costa Rica, Canary Islands and South Africa. Logistics, crating,

personal delivery of shipments, by our directors including off

loading and settling in of reptiles.

Development of Garment leather and the production of South

African designed, farmed, tanned and manufactured, “HIGH END”

Nile Crocodile Jackets, Briefcases etc has been an ardours

rewarding exercise. The quality will amaze you.

Crocodile Wrangling for film and documentaries is a fascinating

aspect of the business.

Crocodile Creek looks forward to introducing you to the World of

the apex predator, Crocodylus Niloticus, a survivor of our

turbulent planet for 240 million years.

ECONOMIC VALUE OF THE

SOUTH AFRICAN

BOER GOAT

Economical farming implies

profitable farming, in other

words the more profit you make

out of farming enterprise, the

more economical or profitable it

is. The livelihood of the farmer

thus depends on his farming

with that animal or crop which

will ensure that he receives the

highest possible yield and profit

in the climatic and soil conditions

applicable to his circumstances.

He also depends on optimal

utilisation of each natural source,

in such a way that the resource in

question will not deteriorate as a

result, but will rather be improved

over the long term. The Boer

Goat fulfills the above aims in

the following ways in terms of its

characteristic features:

MEAT AND PELTS OF A HIGH QUALITY

MEAT Considered in the light of the healthconsciousness

that prevails on a worldwide basis, the

SA Boer Goat yields heart friendly, low cholesterol lean

meat of a high quality, particularly during the young

stage. The meat is flavoursome, succulent, tender,

extremely attractive and very tasty. As a result of these

qualities Boer Goat meat is very much sought after.

Boer goats must be marketed between 3 and 12

months, and carcasses should weigh no more than

23kg. Goats in good condition yield biltong and dried

sausage (droëwors) of very good quality, which can

definitely compete with the very best on the market.

Organic meat: A very exciting thought about this meat

is that with a little selection against internal and external

parasites it will be quite possible to exhibit the meat of

the SA Boer Goat on the shop shelves as organic meat!

In the light of the predilection for the Boer Goat meat

displayed by certain consumers in SA and the rest of

the world, along with the characteristics required for

the right type of meat for the health conscious sector of

consumers world-wide, one cannot do otherwise than

predict a rosy future for Boer Goat meat originating

from goats of a high quality.

1.2 The results achieved by Boer Goats, expressed in

percentages are very good, fluctuating between 48-

60%. These results are narrowly linked to the age and

more particularly the quality of the animals.

1.3 THE PELT of the SA Boer Goat has a high leather

value. An endeavour should be made to breed goats

with short, smooth hair, since this increases the quality

of pelt. The pelts of Boer Goats are used for making

the uppers of shoes, as well as for gloves and a range

of sophisticated leather products.

HARDY AND ADAPTABLE

The Boer Goat is undoubtedly one of the hardiest

small stock breeds in the world, with a great capacity

for adoption. It is therefore encountered in a great

variety of climatic - and pasture - conditions and is

consequently fit for conditions varying from extensive

to intensive. It is well known that the SA Boer Goat

acclimatizes well in the warmest, driest regents of SA

and also in other countries where humidity is very high

and also can this adaptable animal tolerate very low

temperatures. Boer Goats are particularly drought

resistant and it is reported that in arid areas where

waterplaces are far apart they only drink every 6 to 7

days. The SA Boer Goat possesses the unique quality

that it can not only survive on very little, but can flourish

on optimum feeding conditions and produce optimum

production. The Boer Goat is an excellent walker, has

sturdy legs and moves easily in rugged mountainous

areas and through dense bush.

RESISTANCE TO DISEASES

The Boer Goat also has an exceptional ability to

withstand and resist diseases such as blue tongue,

prussic acid poisoning (geilsiekte) and, to a lesser

extent, enterotoxaemia (pulpy kidney). As far as is

known, Boer Goats do not contract blue tongue at all.

Their grazing habits also make them less susceptible to

infection caused by internal parasites, since Boer Goats

prefer to graze above the ground, if such grazing is

available, such as bushveld or scrub vegetation.

FERTILITY AND KID PERCENTAGE

The Boer Goat is very fertile and is not seasonally

bound. Furthermore, multiple births are the rule rather

than the exception, with an average kid percentage of

180 %. These two important economic

characteristic have made the Boer Goat

very popular for the following reasons:

4.2 It’s exceptionally high kid percentage implies that

the Boer Goat cannot be surpassed with regards to

the percentage of meat per kilogram per ewe or per

hectare. This factor places the Boer Goat very high on

the ranking list with regard to intensive farming.

ABUNDANCE OF MILK

Growth rate is linked to sufficient milk production and

good nurturing instincts in ewes with regards to their

young. A ewe has enough milk to raise two kids rapidly.

Difference in ewe production over 3 years

309% born/ewe, 174% weaned/ewe 33kg

weaned (100 day mass) per ewe/year, average 100 day

mass= 19.8kg

Total weight weaned (100 days) per ewe/year over 3

years.

LONGEVITY

The SA Boer Boat is able to maintain economic

production up to the age of approximately 10 years.

This implies that the percentage of young replacement

ewes which have to be withheld is very low.

GRAZING HABITS

Goats prefer small trees and shrubs as their basic diet,

but their exceptional economic value lies precisely in

the fact that they are able to utilise certain plants which

are less appetising to other stock breeds.

Experiments undertaken at Omatjenne Experimental

farm have proved that a Boer Goat consumes 74%

leaves and 26% grass. As a result, it is possible to farm

with cattle and Boer Goats simultaneously without

their being in competition with each other to any great

extent, so that a maximum number of kilograms of

meat per hectare can be produced. As a result of the

grazing habits of the Boer Goat, it can be successfully

incorporated in this way in order to utilise bushes and

shrubs, and thus to assist in controlling infiltration of

the bush. When one considers all these characteristics

of the SA Boer Goat along with all the space available in

this country as well as abroad, where Boer Goats could

be successfully accommodated and establish itself

world-wide as one of the biggest natural resources for

farmers.

4.1 Because the Boer Goat is not

seasonally bound, the kidding season

can be selected to fit in with the period

when food is most plentiful; or, under

intensive conditions, kidding can occur

every 7 - 8 months.

SCULPTOR

DYLAN LEWIS

Dylan Lewis is a second-generation South African sculptor. Lewis’s international

career spans two decades and includes exhibitions in Paris, Sydney, Toronto,

Houston and San Francisco, as well as numerous one-man exhibitions in London,

where he is among the few living artists to have held solo auctions at Christie’s.

Lewis has always drawn his inspiration from the African wilderness, starting with

early paintings of wild landscapes and transitioning into sculpture, exploring

animals as literal symbols of the wild. Widely recognised as one of the world’s

foremost sculptors of the animal form, Lewis initially focused on the big cats as

symbols of wilderness; in recent years, he has used the human figure to explore the

Jungian notion of the wilderness within.

VISIT THE DYLAN LEWIS SCULPTURE GARDEN

Stellenbosch, Cape Town, South Africa

Over a decade in the making, the artist’s seven-hectare sculpture garden features

over 60 sculptures constituting a comprehensive record of Lewis’s full artistic

development thus far. Here, the artist continues to explore themes integral to his

work, including the notion of the untamed forces within us all.

UGANDA WILDLIFE SAFARIS

Kampala, Uganda

At UWS we are unashamedly ethical in our hunting operations as well as all other

projects we are engaged in. We manage and operate exclusive wildlife areas

outside national parks in cooperation with the district local governments as well

as Uganda Wildlife Authority and private landowners to create employment and

to stop uncontrolled and indiscriminate destruction of wildlife and their natural

environment. Our success can be directly attributed to the partnerships we

have formed with local communities in our areas of operation. We believe that

through sharing not only our profits but our resources and knowledge with local

communities, we are changing perceptions about wildlife and thus ensuring future

generations will not only enjoy their natural treasures but will also have a means to

generate a sustainable income from them.

Apart from sport hunting we develop tourism activities such as photographic

safaris and bird watching tours. We also dedicate a huge amount of resources to

rejuvenate old and defunct wildlife reserves, by development of infrastructure,

reintroduction of game and active management on site.

We operate in the districts of Luwero, Nakaseke, Nakasongola, Kiboga, Kyankwansi,

Masindi & Kiryandongo, the former Aswa-Lolim Game Reserve (Nwoya Distrct),

the Okidi Hills (Amuru District) and in Ajai Wildlife Reserve (Arua District).
