Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence 

This whole not-singing thing has been 

very weird. Home on the weekend? 

No sore throat? (No money.) What 

sorcery is this? It’s been great for 

my liver, however, as I recently went 

11 consecutive days without a drop of Tito’s. 

Eleven days is the longest I’ve gone without 

a drink since Covid, beating my previous 

record of zero days without a drink since 

Covid. But that all came crumbling down on 

Thanksgiving Eve while strolling through the 

North Cape May Acme in the mood for eggnog 

and what should appear before me but 

Pennsylvania Dutch boozy eggnog and my 

whistle was whetted. (Yes, that’s the proper 

spelling of whet.) Three days and three bottles 

later, my booze-free counter is back to zero, 

but my eggnog jones has been duly sated (for 

now) and, honestly, you’d have to drink three 

bottles of this stuff over a single lunch to get a 

buzz. Now, if you’ll pardon me, it’s lunchtime. 

I got in the car for magazine delivery 

last week and popped on 101.5 and was 

peeved they weren’t playing the Terry O’Brien 

Delivery Block (music curated just for me, 

your friendly neighborhood music curmudgeon). 

I was about to fire off an annoyed 

text ( your friends who go out of their way to 

program music at their radio station JUST 

FOR YOU love it when you text them with 

complaints at 6am) when I realized, ba-doy, it 

was Wednesday, not Thursday, because of the 

holiday. So, with a chuckle, I flipped over to 

WXPN, which was nice, but I didn’t feel SEEN 

by them like I do with WCFA. 

The WXPN theme was 1996, part of the 

whole 90s A-Z they’re planning for December 

and the conclusions I’ve drawn are (A) there 

was a lot of good music released in 1996 

(Alannis Morissette), and just as much terrible 

music (Incubus) and (B) there is nothing 

as off-putting to me as the idea of nothing but 

90s music for an entire month. 

Due to a scheduling snafu with the 

printer, I actually didn’t get out on delivery 

until around 11am. And everyone knows 

the best time to hit the road with a truckful 

of magazines and 120 or so stops ahead of 

you is noon on the day before Thanksgiving. 

(Pause… deep breath… release… do not DO 

NOT smash into that guy who just pulled out 

in front of you…) Not only was traffic horrendous, 

but I had to deal with all these people. 

When I go out at 3am it’s pull up, toss a bundle, 

pull away. At noon it’s all “hi” and “hello” 

and “happy Thanksgiving” and ugh who has 

time for all that? (Thanks. I hope you all had a 

good Thanksgiving, too.)

us (me, Owen, half of Henry) up to my brother 

Mike’s in West Orange and the other half

lovely. (My go-to haircut when I 

had hair was the Jack Dempsey. 

It sounds bad but I was a lot more 

attractive back then and no one 

cares about your haircut when 

you’re good looking.) 

Ran into Captain John Wilsey 

outside Cape May Veterinarians. 

Finally. Dude is getting fixed. 

Last week I made clear my 

hate for the new Black Panther 

movie, Wakanda (felt like) Forever. 

However, after a brief chat with 

Jehovanny Nunez at Antojos, 

I will give it a second look. On 

Disney +. When it’s free. 

I’ve recently come to the 

unsettling realization that I will 

probably not live long enough to 

hit REMOVE on all my Facebook 

friend suggestions. But it won’t 

keep me from trying. 

The difference between generations... 

ME: I’m gonna take 

a quick shower before we head 

out. (Ten minutes later, showered, 

dressed, in the car.) The 

17-21-year-old sons: I’m gonna 

take a quick shower before we 

head out. (Thirty minutes later 

I think I hear the water shut off, 

but J. Cole is still blasting through 

the speaker and the toilet seat just 

went down.) 

The Chosen, a Christian TV 

show, recently released the first 

two episodes of its third season 

in theaters and it made more 

money than every Oscar-bait 

lecture-fest on the market. Two 

episodes. Of the third season. Of 

a TV show. That people can watch 

for free. On the heels of this, I 

assume Hollywood will follow 

with a slew of faith-based entertainment, 

a huge cross-section of 

the country is hungry for. But to 

be safe, I won’t hold my breath. 

It Happened on 5th Avenue is 

streaming on HBO Max. It’s an 

old 40s Christmas flick that is a 

sharp cheddar on the cheese factor, 

but it’s heartwarming enough 

and in my top-10 of comedies 

about homeless people. 

Speaking of Avenues and 

the number five and HBO Max, 

Avenue 5 is my most satisfying 

hate watch since the early years 

of Saved By the Bell. 

Peripheral on Amazon Prime 

is the perfect follow-up from the 

folks who brought us Westworld; it 

looks great and makes no sense. 

Season two of White Lotus 

(season one started out very 

promisingly but, to me, lost 

steam as it went along) is, so far, 

excellent. Aubrey Plaza (Parks & 

Rec) needs to be in everything. 

Facebook Fake-Out of the 

Week: A friend posted “Eagles 

sign Gronk” and for five seconds 

I allowed myself to believe it was 

true. Makes sense for the Eagles, 

who are down a tight end after 

the felonious assault on Dallas 

Goedert, but Gronk is probably 

having too good a time chilling in 

Florida with all the money in the 

world not having knee surgery to 

lace ’em up for the Birds. That five 

seconds, though… 

Last week I introduced my 

good friend, Chris Nagle (program 

director, WIBG), to Garth 

Marenghi’s Darkplace, an absurdist 

horror-comedy with the sensibility 

of Dr. Who and budget of 

60s Star Trek. It was my thank 

you for Chris introducing me 

to Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy 

about 20 years ago. (So long and 

thanks for all the fish, my gig signoff, 

comes from Hitchhiker’s. 

It’s what the dolphins tell us just 

before they leave on a spaceship 

and the Earth explodes.)

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

When it comes to autumn migration, 

I am about the last person 

to call it a season. Even now, in 

late November, there are birds 

still migrating south and will be 

until February, when the last migrating Redthroated 

Loons pass. A heavy snow fall farther 

north will prompt wintering Red-tailed 

Hawks to head south in search of open areas 

where voles are more easily seen. 

When the Great Lakes freeze, Red-necked 

Grebes, Lesser Scaup and other hardy ducks 

are forced to find open water. It might be salty, 

but in Cape May have open water all winter. 

When winter finch exhaust food stocks in 

the north, they are forced to relocate. I’ve seen 

hordes of hungry Common Redpoll coming in 

off the ocean as late as February and piling up 

on the beach. Have your thistle feeders filled. 

But in November and December, bird migration 

remains contingent upon the passage of 

a cold front and its resulting northwest winds. 

Good pushes of migrating Red-tailed Hawks 

are possible into December given sunny skies 

and bird-driving northwest winds. I believe I 

have spent half my life waiting for northwest 

winds and their tribute of migrating hawks. 

All in all, a life well spent. 

As I write this, tomorrow promises to be 

a day blessed with northwest winds and I am 

anticipating the flight of the season. Hawks, 

waterfowl, late-season songbirds like robins 

and waxwings. Anybody can be a birder in 

September when temperatures are warm, and 

woodlands buzz with migrating warblers. 

Last week, we had three Golden Eagles in 

a single morning and three Tundra Swans that 

set their wings and settled into Bunker Pond. 

Tomorrow temperatures will be below the 

threshold of insect comfort but won’t prevent 

Tree Swallows from gliding over Bunker Pond 

looking for pond-warmed insects to inhale. 

Northwest winds push birds close to 

shore but foul your windshield. The tiny pallid 

sandpipers on the beach are Sanderling. 

The dark ones flushed off the ship and jetty by 

waves are Purple Sandpipers, a hardy shorebird 

that has the distinction of wintering farther 

north than any sandpiper. Where most 

of their kin sit out the winter on tropical and 

subtropical flats, Purple Sand seek out rocky 

coastlines north to Greenland. It’s an energetic 

tossup. Stay north where conditions are 

harsh or invest the energy and migrate south. 

There is no perfect answer and different birds 

make different choices. It’s all about reducing 

risk and finding food so come next spring you 

are fit enough to move your genes forward.

The Theater Column

This holiday season, three one-person 

shows in Cape May will help you discover 

just how much cheer one person 

can bring. Here is a preview. 

One-person shows are nothing 

new. Ancient tribes all had one person 

who likely told the stories passed down from 

generation to generation, according to historian 

John Gentile’s book “Cast of One: One 

Person Shows from the Chautauqua Platform 

to Broadway.” One of my favorites was Edgar 

Allen Poe, who would recite his work for 

audiences in “platform performances” in the 

1840s. Ten years later, another performer took 

America by storm performing his work — 

Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” 

Cape May Stage has brought “One 

Christmas Carol” to town, and Douglas Baker 

has been charming audiences in this oneman 

show. The theater describes this show 

as a “one-man tour de force. Dickens’ famous 

story about selfishness and selflessness is 

stripped down to its bare essence, forgoing 

the usual opulence of the holidays and focusing 

on what is of utmost importance during 

the season.” The show runs through December 

30 at the Robert Shackleton Theater. More

Next, hop a trolley to enjoy amazing 

holiday ghost stories. East Lynne Theater 

and Cape May MAC host Amanda Brinlee 

who will captivate audiences in Ghosts of 

Christmas Past Trolley Rides, which run 

through December 23. Amanda helped ELTC 

bring “Poe by Candlelight” to the stage in 

October, and she is sure to please this season.

ELTC’s Gayle Stahlhuth makes her 

final performance as Artistic Director. In 

“Christmas Presents from the Past,” she brings 

three holiday classics to the stage including 

one of my personal favorites, O. Henry’s “Gift 

of the Magi.” Other stories include Nathaniel 

Hawthorne’s “Snow Image” and Mary 

Wilkins Freeman’s “Christmas Masquerade.” 

Gayle has been a Cape May treasure since 

joining ELTC in the late 1980s. Stahlhuth, 

with husband Lee O’Connor, produced over 

120 shows for ELTC. In 2016, she was honored 

for her years of theater work by The 

National Association of Professional Women. 

This show runs through December 10 at the

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, celebrate the start to the holiday season! 

Since long before our holiday scripts 

were written by Charles Dickens, 

Clement C. Moore and the Coca 

Cola Company, humans have valued 

annual rituals. According to archaeologist 

Sheila Coulson, we’ve been doing it 

for 70,000 years. In Botswana, Coulson found 

evidence of a ritual celebrating the python creation 

myth, which involved a large sculpture 

of a python housing a chamber from which a 

priest could speak to celebrants. Though there 

were sacrificial arrowheads surrounding the 

statue, there is no evidence of squabbling over 

who ate the last of the mashed potatoes, or 

which sibling was Mom’s favorite. 

This ancient celebratory site suggests 

that ritual and tradition have always been 

important. Tradition connects us to our family, 

our community and to the world. Rituals 

help to mark the passage of time, to cheer 

us up by making Tuesday feel different from 

Sunday, and to remind us in November that 

May will come again. Cape May is full of holiday 

traditions, and whether you join in or just 

absorb the atmosphere, they help to make late 

autumn the most wonderful time of the year. 

Start off with the West Cape May 

Christmas Parade, scheduled for December 

3 at 5pm. This volunteer-run, locals-focused 

event is welcoming to visitors and provides 

the kind of charm you might find in Bedford 

Falls. Dress for the weather, bring your 

patience, and remember that there are kids 

around. This is a very popular night in town, 

so make hotel and dinner reservations, and 

give yourself time to walk to your restaurant. 

December 3 is also Wassail Day at Historic 

Cold Spring Village. Stroll the paths of the village 

from 11am to 2pm and “enjoy live music, 

hot beverages and holiday treats.” Admission 

is $5. Visit the Country Store for unusual 

stocking stuffers. Wagon rides will be available 

for $3. Visit hcsv.org for more. Find more 

unique gifts at the Nature Center’s Christmas 

Market from 10am to 3pm, December 3 and 4. 

This free market features hand-crafted items, 

local artwork and hot chocolate. 

Treat yourself to a holiday trolley tour, 

celebrating the best of Cape May. If you haven’t 

taken a trolley tour since your college 

student rode with Mrs. Claus, perhaps it’s

brings the magic back with its annual Winter

I am turning 30 next month and want 

to have a party, but I don’t have the money. 

My plan is to invite everyone to my favorite 

restaurant, and everybody pays for their own 

meal. My boyfriend says that’s “crazy, rude 

and inconsiderate.” I don’t see it that way. 

We’ll all be together and that’s what matters 

to me. He says if I insist on a Dutch Treat 

birthday, that I should tell them no presents. 

Why shouldn’t they buy me a gift? He refuses 

to talk about it and told me to “do whatever 

you want. You will anyway.” I think this is so 

unfair. Plus, he says it makes him feel bad that 

he can’t afford to give me a party. We are still in 

college and working part-time. Tell me what to

Dear Birthday 

So many issues here. First, your beau is 

hyper considerate, and you a bit challenged 

in that area. Your idea is not crazy but could 

be considered rude if it’s not communicated 

properly. Why not gather at friendly bar like 

the Ugly Mug or Delaney’s? You can order a 

couple trays of hors d’oeuvres which will not 

break the bank. Your guests will pay for their 

own drinks and a good time will be had by all.

My two adult children moved back home 

during COVID and because they both work 

remotely, they are saving a lot of money living 

here. We don’t ask them to contribute, but we 

make sure they are saving their money so they 

can buy their own home, hopefully without a 

mortgage. That is our dream for them. It has 

been working out beautifully. But, when we 

get takeout, they never reach into their pocket 

and pay. It’s a small thing, but really irks their 

father and me. We don’t want to make a big 

thing of it but how do we handle it? — Stiffed

The Answer Lady can think of one way. 

Nicely tell them. It is not a small thing because 

contributing to the community — in this case 

your family — is as important as saving for 

the future. You don’t want them thinking that 

the world is a free ride. Next time you order a 

brick-oven pizza from Lucky Bones, have them 

pick it up. Do not reach into your pocket. When 

they say something, that is your door to have a 

chat about fairness and responsibility.

MONEY is a handsome and happy two-yearold 

boy. He came to the shelter when his 

owner could no longer care for him. Money 

loves running in the yard and is slowly learning 

what to do with his toys. He has excellent 

leash manners and is very treat motivated 

making any training easy and fun. He needs a 

slow introduction to other dogs and cats. 

GHOST RIDER came to the shelter as a stray 

but has learned to warm up quickly to the 

humans in his life. He is a young dog and 

learning manners which are improving daily. 

Ghost Rider would need a slow introduction 

to other dogs and cats before he’s comfortable. 

He would be a wonderful companion to anyone 

that opens their heart to him.

they brought her to the shelter. She is now in

summer with four other kittens. He is a roughand-tumble 

boy who loves to play. Versace is
