CAIA Live Oak
Approved by the FEI
March 4th, 2010
The Fédération Equestre International (FEI) expects all those involved in international equestrian
sports to adhere to the FEI’s Code of Conduct and to acknowledge and accept that at all times
the welfare of the horse must be paramount and must never be subordinated to competitive or
commercial influences.
1. At all stages during the preparation and training of competition horses, welfare must take
precedence over all other demands. This includes good horse management, training methods,
farriery and tack and transportation.
2 Horses and competitors must be fit, competent and in good health before they are allowed to
compete. This encompasses medication use, surgical procedures that threaten welfare or
safety, pregnancy in mares and the misuse of aids.
3. Events must not prejudice horse welfare. This involves paying careful attention to the
competition areas, ground surfaces, weather conditions stabling, site safety and fitness of the
horse for onward travel after the event.
4. Every effort must be done to ensure that horses receive proper attention after they have
competed and that they are treated humanely when their competition careers are over. This
covers proper veterinary care, competition injuries, euthanasia and retirement.
5. The FEI urges all involved with the sport to attain the highest levels of education in their areas
of expertise.

Combined Driving – A Brief History
Combined driving has it roots in the military exercises (combined training/horse trials) designed to
test the en dur ance of the military troop horse. These exercises evolved into civilian competitions
such as the three day event.
The modern Combined Driving Event (CDE) came into existence in 1968 when Britain’s Prince
Philip, president of the Federation Equestrian International (FEI), initiated the formulation of international
rules for the new sport which had been performed in many countries in various ways for
gen er a tions.
The fi rst FEI type CDE in the US was run in 1970 in Johnson Park in the middle of the city of New
Brunswick, NJ. The sport was brought to this country by Philip Hofmann who, as CEO of Johnson
& Johnson, had connections in the city for staging the event. In 1979 USET added driving to
its list of international disciplines, and has since sponsored selection trials and helped train drivers
to represent the US in International competition.
Live Oak CDE was fi rst organized by Susan Gilliland in 1993.
Spectators Guide
The Combined Driving Event has three phases: dressage, marathon and cones, or obstacles.
Dressage, (from the French word meaning “to train”), is the foundation of training from which all
other phases of the competition are made possible. The test is a prescribed sequence of movements
which is driven from memory and executed with reference to lettered markers around the
arena. Each is judged as to the driver’s general command of the horse, impulsion of the horse,
freedom and regularity of gaits. Pairs and four-in-hands must work together as one unit, sharing
equally the work. The overall impression should provide a pleasing picture of harmony and effort
less grace.
The Marathon is the toughest test of stamina, courage, and agility. First, competitors go for miles,
then return to the show grounds to negotiate the exciting hazards as quickly as they can, because
they are penalized for every second spent in a hazard. A shorter and more diffi cult route may not
be as quick as a longer, more open route because the horses may have to travel at a slower rate
of speed through the tricky turns. If a carriage happens to get stuck in a tight turn, the short route
becomes a liability as precious time is spent in the hazard. During the course walk prior to the
com pe ti tion, the driver must decide whether to gamble on a riskier but potentially quicker route
or to plan on a safer way which must be galloped fl at our in order to be effective. Entries may
choose any path through a hazard as long as they drive through each lettered gate in sequence
without going back wards through one before negotiating it correctly.
Cones is an obstacle course where meticulous accuracy is required. The objective is to drive
through the cones without any penalties due to knocking the balls off the cones, disobedience,
or going off course, and within the time allowed.
