At its full height of 560 feet, the fountain in the center of <strong>Fountain</strong> <strong>Hills</strong> is higher than the Washington<br />
Monument. It is also 10 feet taller than Notre Dame Cathedral, 110 feet higher than the Great Pyramid of<br />
Cheops in Egypt and three times as high as Old Faithful in Yellowstone Park. The fountain is the focal point<br />
of community celebrations and the pride of our residents. If you happen to visit during the St. Patrick’s Day<br />
celebration, you’ll see the fountain transform to bright emerald green. On special occasions, the fountain<br />
is extended to its full height and lights up in a rainbow of color at night. For everyday viewing, the fountain<br />

FOUR PEAKS –<br />
PURPLE MOUNTAIN MAJESTY<br />
The lyrics “purple mountain<br />
majesty” could have been<br />
written for these peaks.<br />
They change with the light<br />
from lavender to violet to<br />
deep purple. Fittingly, the<br />
world’s finest amethyst is<br />
found high on its slopes.<br />
This mountain is one of<br />
the area’s highest points<br />
at 7,657 feet. <strong>Visitor</strong>s and<br />
residents have grandstand<br />
seats for the daily<br />
spectacle of the sun rising<br />
dramatically behind Four<br />
Peaks.<br />
McDOWELL MOUNTAINS<br />
Some of the oldest rocks<br />
in Arizona make up the<br />
McDowell Mountain Range<br />
to the west. The range’s<br />
highest point is McDowell<br />
Peak at 4,034 feet. The<br />
rounded mountain to the<br />
south is Fire Necklace<br />
Mountain, named for when<br />
a fire burned down its<br />
slopes, encircling it. Native<br />
Americans found shelter<br />
here, as evidenced by<br />
petroglyphs and artifacts.<br />
Prospectors sought mineral<br />
wealth but discovered<br />
limited amounts of gold,<br />
silver and copper.<br />

MT. McDOWELL – FIREROCK<br />
One of the most prominent<br />
landmarks near <strong>Fountain</strong><br />
<strong>Hills</strong> and Fort McDowell is<br />
the jagged outline of Red<br />
Mountain, at 2,830 feet<br />
high. The deep cleft on its<br />
western flank is known as<br />
“Gunsight” because of its<br />
resemblance to the narrow<br />
slot in a fort used for firing<br />
at attackers. Its distinctive<br />
red color that glows<br />
dramatically in the last rays<br />
of day lead some to call it<br />

a stargazing oasis in the Valley of the Sun. You don’t have to be an astronomer to appreciate the quality<br />

Mountain Regional Park or Needle Rock Recreation Area north of town. Tips for<br />

ADERO CANYON<br />
Trails in <strong>Fountain</strong> <strong>Hills</strong> can be accessed from the Adero Canyon<br />
Trailhead. The trailhead is accessible from dawn to dusk each day,<br />
seven days a week. To access the Town of <strong>Fountain</strong> <strong>Hills</strong> Adero Canyon<br />
Trailhead, located at 14800 N. Eagle Ridge Drive, follow North Eagle<br />
Ridge Drive from Palisades through the Adero Canyon neighborhoods.<br />
McDOWELL MOUNTAIN PRESERVE<br />
Thanks to the foresight of local residents, the tops of the McDowell<br />
Mountains are preserved for wildlife and future generations to enjoy.<br />
Through the work of Sonoran Conservancy volunteers, there are now<br />
more than five miles of trails and three to five scheduled, guided hikes<br />

McDOWELL MOUNTAIN REGIONAL PARK<br />
McDowell Mountain Regional Park has over 50 miles of trails with<br />
beautiful desert scenery for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback<br />
riding. This over 21,000-acre regional park is located four miles north of<br />
<strong>Fountain</strong> <strong>Hills</strong>. For mountain bikers the competitive track has three loop<br />
tracks; a long loop – 8.2 miles, a sport loop – 3.0 miles, and a technical<br />
loop – 2.9 miles. A pump track has been added to the Competitive Track<br />
trailhead. This twisting combination of table tops, rollers and banked<br />
turns is a great way to improve weight shifting and bike handling skills.<br />
For campers, McDowell Mountain Park has 76 individual sites for tent<br />
or RV camping. The developed sites accommodate up to a 45-foot RV.<br />
