Book club

Books for the hols, gifts for foodie friends, Vin de Joie wine ... it’s the season of joy.

La Motte’s

Vin de Joie 2022 Rosé

is a salmon pink wine ... all melon

and grapefruit, nectarine and a hint

of sweet candyfloss. Drink it with

a simple salad, charcuterie,

salmon or crayfish. R99 from

your local wine boutique or

online from la-motte.com

Would you think of taking left over lemon rind, baking at high heat until dry and

charred, then grinding what are, to be completely honest here, the now shrivelled

pieces of burnt rind, and using as a condiment with sweet and savoury dishes?

Nope. Us neither. But we’re not Yotam (obvs). In Ottolenghi Test Kitchen – Extra

Good Things, it’s suggested Ottolenghify should be a verb (‘I Ottolenghified my

roasted aubergine with some feta’) … and this sensationally delicious book is just

full of twists, flavour surprises, and flair. We’re going to Ottolenghify our foodie

friends’ Christmas with copies of this, with best wishes for a year full of sauces,

sprinkles, pickles and flavour. Ebury Press, R595

Ottolenghi and Prue ... happy days

We’ve all got that one friend. The one who loves food, but is a disaster in the

kitchen. And Yotam Ottolenghi may say “There’s an art to making toast, and Prue

Leith knows it. “But ... it’s toast. And Prue says the recipes in Bliss On Toast are easy,

and most home cooks will be able to make them. The collection was compiled by

Prue to celebrate her 30-odd year habit of eating something on toast on Sunday

nights in front of the telly - like the rest of us, yes? But while we’re making avo and

tomato toast and pâté on crisp bread (both of which are in the book, Prue’s no

snob), she ups the game a little. Think duck egg with rainbow chard and Dijon

butter, or figs with blue cheese, thyme and honey. Her beans on toast may use a

can of white cannellini beans and store-bought white bread, but there’s chorizo

and smoked paprika and softened cherry tomatoes. For keen cooks, there’s also

a chapter with recipes to make sauces and breads from scratch. There are sweet

options ... like fried Christmas pudding, brandy cream and blackberries, and

because Christmas means leftovers ... we’ll be making her bubble and squeak with

hollandaise on Boxing Day. Bloomsbury Publishing, R362

A few of our holiday reads ...

Whatever your taste in holiday reads, there’s a wonderful selection this month.

We’ve put these aside to take with us these hols. Santa Montefiore’s Flappy

Investigates is light and rather silly, so perfect for a day on the lounger. All

snobbery and gossip, ardent admirers and parties and small village life. Simon and

Schuster • The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas broke our hearts. And we’ve a feeling John

Boyne’s just released All The Broken Places is going to do it again. It’s the story

of Gretel, sister of Bruno (the protagonist in the first novel), who was 12 when her

brother disappeared, and is now 91, living in London and who has, when a young

family move into the apartment below hers, the chance to expiate her guilt, grief

and remorse and act to save a young boy. Certainly not an easy holiday read, but

quite possibly the one we’re looking forward to the most. Penguin, an Exclusive

Books Festive Favourites read • An Angel’s Demise is Sue Nyathi’s epic saga of love,

war, bloody massacre and betrayal, as well as the cruel caprice of politics, genderbased

violence and what happens when ordinary people get caught up in lies.

Pan Macmillan • It’s 1561 and when sixteen-year-old Lucrezia, Duchess of Ferrara,

is taken to a country villa by her husband, it occurs to her that he’s taken her there

to kill her. Maggie O’Farrell’s The Marriage Portrait shows the beauty and brutality

of Renaissance Italy, and of a young woman whose proximity to power places

her in mortal danger. Tinder Press • Jodi Picoult. A proper holiday read, since once

you start you struggle to put her books down. In Mad Honey, she co-authors

with Jennifer Finney Boylan, the two alternating chapters in this book that doesn’t

shy away from difficult subjects, exploring identity and self-acceptance, abuse

and toxic relationships, domestic violence and trust. Hodder and Stoughton,

an Exclusive Books Festive Favourites read • When Tanz discovers the voices she

hears in her head are not, actually, her imagination working overtime, but rather

messages from beyond the grave, a whole new way of life opens for her. And not

a moment too soon, since all has not gone according to plan on the career side.

Tracy Whitwell’s The Accidental Medium is perfect for beach or a long plane

journey. Macmillan • And what, we ask, would a holiday be without a thriller?

Peter James’ Picture You Dead is a Detective Superintendent Roy Grace novel

... in which he’s plunged into the unfamiliar world of fine art - a world which

appears to be respectable, gentlemanly and above reproach, but which in fact is

all greed, deception and violence. Macmillan

Book notes

The Sex, Lies & Stellenbosch saga

continues in Sex, Lies & Alibis, which

boasts it’s the hottest book in town.

Steamy and scandalous, this is the

third in Eva Mazza’s sexy and risqué

trilogy. Melinda Ferguson Books.

Staying in the winelands ... in

Stellenbosch: Murder Town,

Julian Jansen shares the behind

the headlines details about the

dozen murders that have taken

place in this town over the past two

decades. Tafelberg

Making movies can be murder!

When strange goings on happen in

the script and then on the set of the

psychological horror movie too ... it

appears the real horror lies off the

page. Run Time by Catherine Ryan

Howard’s a scare a page. Corvus

John Grisham ... another great holiday

read. The Boys from the Bronx sees

two boys growing up as friends. Both

sons of immigrant familes, they end

up on opposite sides of the law, and

ultimately in a courtroom showdown.

Hodder and Stoughton

Cult Classic by Sloane Crosley is a

brilliantly written, sharp and incredibly

witty rom-com ... a tale of love, luck,

and the ghosts of heartbreaks past.

Bloomsbury Circus

It’s 1926 in Kate Atkinson’s Shrines of

Gaiety, and in a country recovering

from the Great War, Soho is the

glittering centre of nightlife and

gaiety. But beneath the dazzle, there’s

a dark underbelly, and not everything

is as it seems. Penguin

Oh gosh .. if your holiday’s a good

few weeks long and you’re a royalist,

you’re in for a treat with Queen of

our Times - The Life of Elizabeth II.

A whopping 624 pages, it’s said to

be the definitive biography by one

of Britain’s leading royal authorities,

Robert Hardman. You’ll be quite

the authority yourself once you’ve

finished this study of dynastic survival

and renewal, spanning abdication,

war, romance, danger, tragedy and

triumph. Macmillan

PROMOTION

Get carried away to

yesteryear’s world

Text: BONOLO MOLOI Photo: PHOTO SUPPLIED

The iconic cigar lounge opens up to a mesmerising

ballroom, where events of any kind take place as if

undisturbed by the passage of time. “From the moment

you arrive, you feel the atmosphere as you step into this

beautiful space. We want our clients to leave in awe of

their surroundings,” says Head Chef and Manager of the

Ramblers Club Venue, Corlia Brown.

The Club was established in 1896 and is known as one

of the oldest sports clubs in South Africa. Mr Charles

Fichardt established it primarily as an English cricket

club, but it soon grew to an all-encompassing sports

club where rugby, cricket, tennis, and bowling were

played. These days soccer, rugby, squash, boxing and

karate can be enjoyed here. The original club still boasts

a snooker and pool room. “We have an active sports bar,

where you can order pub lunches, have a beer, and take

time out of your schedule without feeling overwhelmed

by crowds,” says Francois Venter, Manager of the

Ramblers Sports Club.

The charm of the Cape Dutch architecture and Victorian

detailing remains the golden thread that creates the

nostalgic atmosphere. The dark wooden furniture, gold

and copper details are inspired by the club’s original

decor and for both Corlia and Francois, Ramblers Club is

a place where nostalgia is brewed and celebrated.

The iconic wooden staircase at the club’s main entrance

leads to a scenic balcony that can accommodate 150

guests. The rugby field has hosted numerous sporting

events throughout the years, and as the home field of

the Collegians Rugby Club, still entertains supporters

during the rugby season. Additionally, the field also

serves as the perfect area for festivals and bigger events.

The opulence, sophistication, and old school charm

of the ball room and cigar lounge forms the perfect

setting for weddings, and private or corporate events.

The infamous wisteria tree has been nurtured since the

club’s establishment and still forms a popular attraction

point for summer brides.

Brown and Venter aim to cater to the needs of every

client, ensuring a memorable experience through their

personal touch. “We want every event to be unique and

to incite a one-of-a-kind experience. I love sitting down

with clients to fully understand how to bring their vision

to life,” says Brown.

Ramblers Club has been in Bloemfontein for roughly 126

years, and due to the community and appreciation of

the club, business continues to thrive. “Bloemfontein is

a very close-knit community, and the stories and history

of Ramblers are shared and retold by both members and

non-members alike.

” Historical pride, in combination with the support from

clients, really makes it all worthwhile, Brown continues.

As one of the oldest and most historic buildings in Bloemfontein,

the old-school charm of Ramblers Club with its black and white veranda, decorative

ornate gables, copper ceilings, sprung wooden floors, and dazzling chandeliers will

take you on a journey through the ages.

Ramblers Club invites all to celebrate with them.

Visit their website: www.ramblersclub.com or find them on Facebook at Ramblers Club.

Editor’s Choice ...

You’re invited ...

It’s the season to eat, drink and be very, very merry!

Rare, limited and massively desirable

This XO Rosso Brandy is all dark fruit, rich spices, chocolate and French oak - so

Christmas in a bottle, really. Our ed’s not sure if she’s going to give bottles away

as a gift to a best friend, or keep them for herself. Maybe both. It’s one

of two potstill XO brandies just released by Johan Venter, one of SA’s

most accomplished brandy masters, under his The Inventer label.

Limited editions (less than a thousand of each), they each

come with a certificate of authenticity, were traditionally

made with double distillation in copper pot stills and aged

for at least ten years in French oak barrels. Neat, with just a

splash of water or an ice block ... happy Christmas indeed!

R1250 a bottle, only from the inventer.co.za

Can you drink it? Nope. But you can certainly light

it and pop it on to your holiday brunch table. Earl

Grey Scented Candle - so all bergamot and

lemon. R350 from thepiebald.com

Cheese & wine parties

back in fashion (yay)!

Let’s talk cheese and wine parties.

Massively fashionable in the late

sixties and throughout the seventies,

they then became totally uncool.

But they’re back in (retro) style. And

our ed’s thrilled! Glammest cheese

serving platter she could find ... this

oversized, marble dual-colour option.

With marble sourced from Rajasthan

(the marble mecca of India), hand

cut by artisans in Jodhpur, it’s an

impressively solid piece, and massive.

R999. She also fancies these ivory

cups with 24-carat gold petals.

Sold as tea cups, but here used

instead for Bloody Marys, and to hold

breadsticks. R720 for a pair. All from

thepiebald.com (order online right

now for Christmas deliveries).

Kaapse Vonkel Satin Nectar Rosé ...

a delicate string of fine bubbles, a

gorgeous coral pink hue, decadent

aromas of red apples, wild strawberries

and cherries are followed by flavours

of sun-ripe peaches and fresh melon.

And the packaging is the glorious cherry

on the top. Drink this alone or with a

decadent dessert, equally lovely with

Chinese and Thai dishes, lightly dressed

seafood salads, fruit salads with red fruits

and berries, Japanese sushi or crayfish

thermidor. R190 from simonsig.co.za and

at most leading retailers.

Raise your glass ... to a rosé new year

Whether you’re throwing a cocktail party, or have been invited to one

and need to take a gift, here’s the perfect pair ... Blaauwklippen’s Brut

Cap Classique and Blush Rosé. Both have soft tones of pale salmon

and tick all the balmy summer boxes. The 2020 Brut Cap Classique

is a delicate and fresh wine with floral hints and a creamy core, and is

the only Cap Classique made 100 per cent from Zinfandel grapes – it’s

perfect for toasting (and making) memorable moments, or to set the

tone for a romantic dinner. The 2022 Blush Rosé is sophisticated but

light, with the crispness of a dry white and the fruity richness of a red

- so the best of both worlds. It pairs well with Mediterranean-inspired

summer dishes. R200 for the cap classique, R150 for the rosé at your

local wine boutique.

getitmagazine.co.za/bloemfontein

Making merry without the

hangover. Free Spirit Cocktails

by Camille Wilson is a collection

of wonderful cocktails - some

sparkling, some sophisticated,

some with just three ingredients,

and some for the hols. Try A

Berry Good Time ... muddle five

blackberries (or berries of your

choice) with five or so mint

leaves, three lemon wedges,

and 22.5ml simple syrup in

a cocktail shaker. Add ice

and shake until chilled.

Pour into a glass, top with

sparkling water and serve.

planning on making at

every opportunity, too.

“Winning Get It Cover Search

2022 allows me to be a

beacon of hope and it is

truly a dream come true

for me. I see this as

one of my biggest

achievements yet.”

orn and bred in the City of Roses, Mittah hopes to inspire

many, especially Plus Size kids, women, and men. She

hopes to make a positive impact on the community by

showing South Africa that Bloemfontein is a beautiful city

filled with many golden opportunities for growth.

What she enjoys most about living in Bloem is that it’s a

place she calls home. “Growing up, I visited my paternal

and maternal grandparents here in Bloem. I have very

fond childhood memories of Bloem because of the love and

support I always experienced from my entire family, relatives, former teachers,

friends, colleagues, and the community.”

She was the top learner in grade 8 at Brebner High School and in the top 10

throughout her high school career. She was elected as RCL Chairperson and

Head Girl at Brebner.

Mittah was the third runner-up on SABC’s My Palmolive Jam Alley Girlfriend,

winner of the ‘Express’ Poetry competition in which the two poems, ‘A mother’s

love’ and ‘Bricks to build a mansion’ ranked in the top four. “I am a Golden Key

International Honour Society Member with a B.Com Accounting Honours

Degree from the UFS. I completed my articles with the Auditor-General (AG)

and qualified as a Registered Government Auditor (RGA), affiliated with the

South African Institute for Government Auditors (SAIGA). I was secretary of the

Trainee Auditors’ Forum at the AG.”

She was also a 2021/22 Miss South Africa Plus World finalist. She is a radio

personality who works in the accounting services unit at Free State Provincial

Treasury.

This powerhouse is a firm believer that beauty comes in all sizes and hopes

that when people see her on the cover they will know that it can happen to

anyone. “I want to use this platform to empower and instil confidence in not

only Plus Size women but all women of all shapes and sizes. I know that there

are even slender women who have insecurities about their bodies. So ladies,

let’s embrace our bodies, celebrate our bodies, and beat those insecurities.

Dress up and show up! Know what suits you and rock it!”

Mittah has been invited as a speaker to a women’s event where she will give a

motivational talk about women being unstoppable.

She desires to instil confidence in kids, especially chubby girls, to believe from

an early age that they are beautiful, intelligent, and to beconfident about

themselves and their bodies. “I want them not to allow anybody to body

shame them as this leads to having low self-esteem and ultimately a path of

self-destruction, high absenteeism at school, or even suicide. If kids grow up

with low self-esteem, in future they might not value themselves enough to set

boundaries.”

Her mother played a very big role in ensuring that she always looked cute and

loveable as a chubby little girl. “She always affirmed that I’m beautiful and I have

always been her baby doll.”

In primary school, Mittah, experienced body shaming from two boys who

called her ‘Fat tomato’ and ‘Big doughnut’ and this was the period of her life

where she learned most of her coping mechanisms that helped her focus

on her strengths.

“Being chubby was my signature especially because my body gave me stage

presence. Being confident in my body made people love me.”

She entered the Miss South Africa Plus World pageant and started the ‘My Plus

Size World’ YouTube Channel, she is active on her Facebook Page, “The Big and

The Beautiful”. “What I aim to achieve by all this is to most definitely empower

chubby girls, women, and even boys and men to beat insecurities and

wear confidence.”

Mittah encourages women to rock that jeans, that crop top, that

swimwear, that high heel, that lipstick, and ooze with confidence. “Cheers to

my journey from a chubby little girl to a beautiful Plus Size Woman. I am now

celebrating who I am.”

Fact about Mittah: An ideal vacation is starting that trip with a long drive, with

great company, to a beautiful destination at the beach, with fun activities and

nice restaurants. “What’s ideal for me is anything and any place where I’m in

the presence of anyone I feel happy with and can share laughter.”

Celebrate

the victories

“My New Year’s resolution for

2023 is to celebrate the victories – each one, regardless of how small it is.

We tend to focus so much on our stresses and the things that go wrong that

we forget to see how far we have come and how blessed we are.”

tefan Lotter grew

up in Kroonstad and

moved to Bloemfontein

immediately after he

matriculated to study

Economics at the

University of the Free

State (UFS).

“During my studies I

was intrigued by

student leadership

and invested a lot

of time forming part

of the leadership and

transformation at UFS. This

resulted in me becoming Mr UFS (RAG),

which led to me getting a contract at ACE

Models, a show at Kovsie FM, and starting to

present and be the Master of Ceremonies at

events all around Bloem and the Free State,”

he says.

He adds that he was in awe of his journey

and the effects ACE Models had on his life,

“and I wanted to be part of that. I started as

a male mentor and became a Director of

ACE Models Bloemfontein in the beginning

of this year”.

When the pandemic hit, Stefan took on

a new role as a property practitioner at

RealNet Bloemfontein. “I enjoyed success

faster than I could’ve thought. I was quickly

recognised as a rookie to be reckoned with

in the property space. I recently received

the Silver Status Certificate and Million Rand

Club Certificate at the National RealNet Star

Awards.” In the spirit of celebrating, Stefan

says he has a few things worth celebrating

as he has had an amazing year.

“I am blessed with amazing people in my

life, from my family to my friends and my

ACE Models students. I received the prize

for New Director of the Year at the ACE

Models International Conference in July, I

became the director of a company, giving

the youth of Bloemfontein a voice and

empowering them while having SO much

fun doing so and I worked hard to reach

my goals as a Real Estate Practitioner. I am

excited to escalate this avenue of my life

with opportunities that presented itself –

this exciting venture is worth celebrating.

I celebrate the fact that my hard work

has finally started to bear fruits and this is

evident in all aspects of my career.”

Another big achievement Stefan feels

proud of is the fact that he has aligned

his name with so many big brands before

the age of 25 “and I continue to grow

my network and contacts with every

collaboration. I think it is a big achievement

that brands align with my values, morals,

and what I stand for.”

2023 has a lot in store for him, some

of which he can’t disclose as yet. “I was

recently signed with an agent at Legends

Actors in Johannesburg and gotten my very

first role in a series that will be aired in 2023

– even though it is a small role, I am excited

for the doors it may open for the future.

I am definitely working on doing more

presenting on TV too,” he says.

He adds that ACE Models will be having its

biggest year yet as their family is growing

daily. “We have several events planned and

are so excited about the amazing things this

academy brings to Bloemfontein.”

This festive season Stefan will be spending

time at his family home in Bloemfontein.

“During the festive season I focus on what

matters to me the most. I spend as much

time with my family as possible. I also use

the free time the festive season brings to

reflect on the year that has passed and

focus and plan for the year ahead. The

festive season is obviously nothing without

gifts – but the older I get the more I realise

that being surrounded by family and love is

the ultimate gift.”

“Radio is such a special space

to work in. Sharing in people’s

moments and helping them

make memories through

music, really motivates me

to want to touch the lives

and reach into homes across

Bloemfontein and the OFM

region. Most importantly, the

kindness shown by others

inspires me to also want to

be better because showing

kindness does not

cost a thing.”

Bloem’s Best on-air

MMoving from campus radio

to commercial radio, Yolanda

Maartens Brown shares the

journey that brought her to

radio in Bloemfontein, a city

that she describes as the

hidden gem many in South

Africa don’t know about.

“I joined the campus radio station PUKfm at the North

West University in my honours year. At first, I joined

because I thought it would be a perfect past time

because I enjoy talking, coupled with an interest in

music. Then two years flew by and I learnt a lot about

myself - I managed to find my voice through it.”

The perfect opportunity for her to switch stations

presented itself in 2009 when she won OFM’s

popular talent search competition, The Radio Voice,

which afforded her the chance to broadcast from

Potchefstroom over weekends for two years.

“In 2011, I moved to Bloemfontein to join Huistoe

with Johrné van Huyssteen as his producer and traffic

presenter. I basically did a bit of everything – read

sport, traffic, and weather, attended festivals across

the region, did traffic from the Eye in the Sky, and

interviewed a variety of artists and celebrities from

South Africa and around the world.”

After taking a break from radio in 2015, Yolanda

returned on-air in 2020.

“For those 5 years, I worked as the regional manager

at the Reach for a Dream Foundation, which truly

changed my life. Working with children with

life-threatening illnesses put a lot of things into

perspective for me. In 2020, the timing for me to return

to radio was right and although the world was on its

head with the pandemic, this offered me the chance

to settle back in behind the microphone and it is good

to be back.”

Three years back in the industry, Yolanda has managed

to meet a few milestones of her own that she treasures

dearly. “I am super honoured to recently have been

voted the Best Radio Personality and presenter of the

Best Radio Show in the Bloemfontein Courant Best of

Bloemfontein Readers’ Choice Awards. I don’t think I

will stop celebrating soon.”

On a personal level, she has reached a few other big

achievements and continues to celebrate them as she

has grown accustomed to.

“Owning a house is something I truly cherish and

don’t ever want to take for granted. Completing my

master’s degree was also a moment I won’t ever forget,

receiving it cum laude was the cherry on top. Also

being selected as a Rotary Exchange Student out of

many applicants in KZN was an honour - representing

my country in every aspect of my life for an entire year,

what a privilege.”

Radio may have brought her to Bloemfontein but it has

been the people that have kept her here. “My husband,

Charlie Brown, and I are both from Potchefstroom and

we have two border collies that keep us on our toes,

and a passion for the outdoors whether that involves

off-roading in our little 4x4’s, fishing, going for a game

drive or watching the sun set.”

This festive season, Yolanda has her house filled with

a variety of sentimental Christmas decorations that

she collected during her year in Berlin, Germany, as a

Rotary Exchange Student.

“I enjoy surrounding myself with these items, lighting

my special candles, and obviously having fruit cake as

often as possible. My hubby plans to roast a gammon

for the two of us as we can’t be with family this year

and then we plan to eat gammon into the New Year,

LOL,” she ends off.

Let’s Glitz and

Glam it up!

Primer: For a ‘Glitz & Glam’ makeup

look, I would suggest using the

Kryolan HD Micro Primer. This

primer minimises the appearance

of fine lines and enlarged pores, which

create a perfect base that I can layer my

make-up on.

Eyebrows & Concealing: For

this step, I would suggest using

a powder-based product - this

creates a more natural effect. I have used

Kryolan Eye Shadow shade ‘101/Sudan’

to fill in my eyebrows. Once done, I have

concealed them using the lightest shade in

the Kryolan 6 Shade Highlight and Contour

Circle, to ensure that the brow is shaped

perfectly.

Eye Shadow: I have created a ‘Glitz

& Glam’ eye shadow look using

my Kryolan Variety Eye Shadow

palette in ‘V3’, the stunning Kryolan

HD Glamour Sparks in ‘Noble’, and

the Kryolan HD Skin Liner/ ‘10’. The HD

Glamour Sparks in ‘noble’ has then been

placed on the inner corner of my eye for

a sparkly pop! Finally, HD Skinliner/’10’

has been added to the top of my lash

line.

Lips: I have lined my lips with the

Kryolan Faceliner/’32’ and applied

the Kryolan Lip Stain in ‘Ambient’ to

create a dark plum lip to compliment my

Smokey Eye. I simply adore the Lip Stain

as it is long-lasting and smudge proof

once it sets!

It’s that time of the

year and everyone

is ready to celebrate

the end of it and

welcome a new

beginning. Why not

dress up and play

the part? Kryolan

Free State’s make-up

artist, Charne’ de Wit,

has just the look to

complete your Glitz

and Glam!

The look is short and

simple so that you

can easily recreate it

at home.

Foundation & Powder : I

have chosen to use the Kryolan

Dermacolor Camouflage Créme

in shade ‘D62’ as I personally prefer

high coverage and a smooth matte finish

when it comes to a ‘Glitz & Glam’ look. Set

the make-up with the Kryolan Dermacolor

Fixing Powder in shade ‘P4’- this helps to

absorb any excess oils and enhances

the durability of my foundation.

Contour and Blush: In this step,

I have made use of the Kryolan

Glamour Glow Palette in ‘Bridal’. This

palette is gorgeous and a definite musthave

for all make-up lovers.I have used

the shade ‘Bronzing Sun’ in my palette to

complete my contouring and the shade

‘Sweet Plum’ for my Blusher.

getitmagazine.co.za/bloemfontein

Setting: Lastly, we can lock in

the make-up using the Kryolan

Dermacolor Fixing Spray. This will

most definitely boost the longevity of my

make-up - and now that I have used it in

conjunction with the Kryolan Dermacolor

Foundation and Powder, it waterproofs

my make-up.

Jolly outdoors

It’s the season to enjoy the garden (and a cocktail!)

Veggie of the month

You may think rhubarb is a fruit, but it is actually a

vegetable, belonging to the sorrel family. Only the

stalks are eaten. The red stemmed Victoria is the

most popular variety for its spicy, rich flavour. Thanks

to MasterChef and the cookery channel, rhubarb

has become a lot sexier than the usual rhubarb and

apple crumble. Although there’s nothing wrong with

that either. Think rhubarb gin, rhubarb fizz, rhubarb

cheesecake with ginger, and even with pork (BBC

Food). Rhubarb is a perennial that can be sown from

spring to autumn. It needs deep, well composted soil

that drains well and plenty of sun. Space plants 1m

apart. Although the stems are best harvested after

two or three years, a rhubarb plant will reward with

juicy stems for many years. Do not eat the leaves as

they are poisonous. Details: kirchhoffs.co.za

Rhubarb cocktail

How about a pretty pink rhubarb cocktail ...

very summery. Start off by making a simple

syrup, which involves combining one cup

each of water and chopped rhubarb with

half a cup of sugar in a saucepan and bringing

to the boil. Reduce the heat, and simmer slowly

for around 20 to 30 minutes - until the vegetable is

mushy and the syrup thickened. Take off the heat, cool,

and then strain through a fine mesh strainer. Discard

the mush, and store the syrup in a glass bottle in the

fridge (it’ll last throughout the festive season). Now for

the cocktail. We make ours with vodka, but gin will work,

too. The ratio is two tots vodka to one tot rhubarb syrup ...

add a squeeze of lemon juice and shake madly in a cocktail

shaker with plenty of ice. Pour into a fresh ice-filled glass and

top with soda water.

Text: ALICE COETZEE

Indoor plant of the month

If it’s December it has to be poinsettia! This year’s new

variety is Kayla Red, with multi-coloured oak-shaped leaves,

both bright and dark red, black and bright green. It’s a

compact, heat tolerant, long lasting plant ... this Christmas

flower will look good for two to three months or more if

displayed in a warm room that receives bright, direct light.

Keep the soil moist but don’t over water as the roots may

rot. After flowering, cut it back down to 10cm and repot

into a larger pot (if you want it for the patio) or plant it in

the garden in a position that gets plenty of sun.

Take your cue

from nature when

looking for a gift

for gardeners. This

Bramley’s Aloe Vera

& Olive Oil gift set

has a tissue oil and

hand cream ... perfect

to restore, revitalise

and rejuvenate dry

skin. Affordable, too.

R36.99 from PEP.

We’re planting ...

Zinnia Zahara Double Salmon Rose - because its blooms stay

bright, fresh and pickable during the hottest months of the

year. Vintage zinnias are durable garden flowers and Zahara

even more so because it has outstanding disease tolerance

and low water needs. This zinnia variety doesn’t get sick like the

older varieties did. It sails through heat, rain and humidity. Plants

do just fine in ordinary garden soil and flower well with regular

watering through to autumn. It also has a great colour range:

orange, cherry, raspberry ripple, fire, yellow, salmon rose, white and

two brilliant mixes. Details: ballstraathof.co.za

What to do in the garden

Five ways to keep the garden alive

if you’re leaving home during the

December holidays ...

• Mulch flower beds before you go.

CELEBRATING

WOMEN IN BUSINESS

FOR 15 YEARS AND MORE

Get It is honoured to showcase

and celebrate these female industry leaders

with 15 years and more business experience in Bloemfontein.

These women build empires and carry the baton for young women in business.

This special feature looks to put them on a well-deserved pedestal.

Juanè Raats

FOCUS ON CELEBRATING WOMEN IN BUSINESS

Juanè Raats is an occupational therapist and part-time

lecturer and trainer. She grew up in the most beautiful

small Boland town named Porterville.

“I completed my Bachelors in Occupational Therapy at

the University of Stellenbosch and was invited to work as

an Occupational Therapy student in Gent, Belgium. After

completing my community service year I immediately started

my private practice in Bloemfontein - situated at Mediclinc

Bloemfontein,” says Juanè.

Juanè is in a fortunate position to help and assist people in need

daily, as well as train and inspire young minds to improve their

knowledge and skills.

What she enjoys most about her job is the fact that every day is a

new challenge with lots of problem-solving while making a

lasting difference in people’s lives.

Every time she sees the gratitude and tears in a

patient’s eyes when they can carry on with their

normal life after recovery from an injury or diagnosis

is a moment that truly defines her career. “[As is the

case] every time I see the lightbulb moment in a

student or young therapist’s eyes when they are

ecstatic about learning something new.”

Juanè has a few career highlights. These include

when she was able to expand her practice in

two different areas (Bloemfontein and Kimberley) as well as

establishing Hands on Centre Inc; when she was asked to

train and be a part-time lecturer at the Central University

of Technology, Free State, where she presented a course in

lymphoedema; when a female entrepreneur magazine published

an article about her business; when her practice won the Best

of Bloemfontein Reader’s Choice awards in 2021 and 2022;

when she became part of an importing business Secar Clever

Pty.; and every time she completes a certification to expand her

knowledge.

Her motto in life is: “Your limitations are what you create in your

mind – you can achieve anything if you are willing to put in the

extra work and dedication.”

In 2023, Juanè will be launching her new company called

Occupational Therapy Support Centre Pty. which will focus

on the development and training of young therapists and

equipping them for the ever-changing world out there.

When she is not at work, she enjoys spending time with friends

and she writes and composes music. She is also part of a band

that hosts music shows for charity fundraisers. “I love my dogs

and time spent with my parents is very special to me.”

Retha van Zyl

“My first transaction was the sale of an erf to a special

couple, who were brave enough to trust in the promises

made about the newly established Woodland Hills Wildlife

Estate. Since this first transaction, I have helped hundreds

of families find or sell their Woodland Hills home. Each

property, each family, holds a special place in my heart -

each transaction being a highlight of my career.”

Born and bred in the Free State, Retha van Zyl is the owner and

Principal of Retha van Zyl Real Estate, an estate agency that turns

dreams into realty in Woodland Hills Wildlife Estate.

Looking back on her career as a property practitioner, she feels grateful

for each person who trusted her with the sale and/or purchase of

their erf/home. The first few years of marketing the estate were very

challenging for Retha as it was a new development; and most people

she encountered had serious doubts as to whether this security estate

would ever succeed.

“I took inspiration from the brave decision my husband, Wikus, and I

had made when we purchased our erf in Woodland Hills a year before

I started my career as property practitioner. Based on the experiences

we had with the developer and the Board of Trustees at the time, I

managed to convince quite a few skeptics to make this new Estate

their home,” says Retha.

According to Retha, selling property is her calling. “Each invitation to

market someone’s property; or to help someone find a new home,

person, couple or family; and I never take a call for granted,” she relays.

She is tenacious, and never gives up. “I set high standards for myself

and work hard to create a positive experience for my clients. When I

go through tough times and feel like losing hope; I find comfort in the

Retha.

Aside from her profession, Retha practices a number of hobbies such

as gardening, photography, and chalk paint - crafts she masters as she

goes. Aligning some of her hobbies with her profession, she relishes

the opportunity to photograph beautiful homes.

“The greatest compliment on my work, is when a seller proclaims

that they would like to buy their own house, based on my advert.

I thoroughly enjoy what I do. Most of all, I love creating new

relationships with my clients. For a short time, I become a part of their

household; sharing in their personal journey,” she says.

Looking ahead to 2023, Retha wishes to re-establish relationships

with previous clients and to create opportunities for people to get

to know her on a personal level. “My life’s purpose is to serve people

with honesty, integrity and empathy. I will put a renewed focus on

ensuring that Retha van Zyl Real Estate is the estate agency to trust in

Woodland Hills Wildlife Estate,” Retha concludes.

Erna Goodes

Shining your light warms up people - “I believe in the

power of a positive mind because what you can dream,

you can achieve, coupled with a winning attitude

because I don’t like to lose. I also know that shining your

light in service will warm up people and create results.”

2001 was a career defining moment that Erna Goodes could not

have anticipated as she joined the ranks in the RE/MAX brand. As

the Broker Owner of RE/MAX First in Bloemfontein, she selects,

appoints and train real estate agents to ensure the smooth

running of the office, to optimise support given to agents, and

attending to the needs of the staff.

“My main focus is to inspire and grow people, who will grow the

business. I lead people to understand their strengths and set

goals to reach their full potential. I established love as the centre

of the business with a loyal and supportive family of agents and

staff. I firmly believe loads of fun should be incorporated in the

business,” says Erna.

She expresses her pride in being part of the RE/MAX brand and

watching it grow from 4 agents to 40. “Seeing people developing

and becoming financially independent, creating better lives for

their families, and constantly winning the Best of Bloemfontein

is something I take pride in. [I’m also proud of ] winning the RE/

MAX National RE/MAX Passion award, winning the number 1

spot in the region every year, and continuously ending in the

top 5 single offices nationally,” says Erna.

Erna attributes their success to the consistency the brand

shows. “The fastest will not necessarily win the race, but the

most adaptable and consistent,” says Erna.

As a loving wife, mother and grandmother, Erna takes time to

be with her family. “I love my family and spend as much time as

possible with my husband, Barry, my children and grandchildren.”

Realising the importance of charity work, Erna enjoys watching

how the charity work they do impacts the lives of those who are

less fortunate. “I enjoy seeing people not asking for a miracle, but

becoming the miracle - the hope, encouragement, and uplifting

society needs.”

For 2023, Erna hopes to win every single accolade with a happy,

fulfilled RE/MAX team.

“My focus in 2023 is to lead by example, to motivate my team to

become even more successful, but to develop in all areas of their

lives. I will continue to support my team through the world-class

RE/MAX training programmes and personal attention. And to

encourage them to use their God-given talents to the Glory of

God - to not only live for themselves, but to change people’s lives,”

concludes Erna.

Joanita Coetzee

“My biggest dream since high school was to become

a Chartered Accountant. The road was tough and I fell

a few times along the way, but as my mentor, Mr Daan

Havenga, always said, ‘it is not about how many times

you fall, but that you get up every time’. So the day I

found out I passed my final exam was the defining

moment of my career because that made

all that we have accomplished today possible.”

Joanita Coetzee is in the accounting industry as a qualified

Chartered Accountant. She completed her articles and training

in 2007 and got her designation as a qualified Chartered

Accountant in 2008.

Futura Financial Services was established back in the year 2003

and at the time, Joanita could not have known what the future

had in store for her with Futura Financial Services.

“From 2008 to 2020, I also managed a recruitment company in

Bloemfontein where I learned valuable lessons in interacting

with people from different walks of life.

I am the managing director of Futura Financial Services, which

is an accounting practice situated in Bloemfontein with clients

in the whole of South Africa and even Dubai, Hong Kong, and

Canada. We try to add value to our clients’ businesses daily,” she

says. Joanita describes that the journey she takes with her clients

often leads to friendships that she values dearly and she finds

that to be career-defining.

“My clients tend to become my friends and it is amazing to

walk the journey with them from start-ups, struggling to make

ends meet, to well-established businesses contributing to the

economy of South Africa. I love my job when clients leave my

office with the statement that they can now sleep soundly

because they know I’ve got their backs,” she adds.

A positive attitude often leads to positive results, and this is the

mind-set that Joanita keeps on a daily basis. “My faith in God

carries me daily. I also believe you determine your reaction on

every challenge. I really try to react positively and see the glass as

half full.”She describes that being able to make a difference in her

clients’ lives and being able to give them peace of mind, makes

her job enjoyable. Apart from being a career-driven woman, she

makes time for herself and her loved ones. “I like to spend time

with my special people, watching series, painting (or anything

creative), and reading. I absolutely love reading and losing myself

in a good storybook.”

“The Lord has blessed us with a new business opportunity in

2023 that will broaden our focus. We are so excited and will reveal

all when the time is ready,” she concludes.

Annette Kasselman

“After a diverse career which included

my being crowned as Mrs South Africa 2006

and Mrs Worldwide International 2007, opening my

own modelling school, being a marketing manager and

fundraiser as well as an entrepreneur, I embarked on a new

journey and joined the property industry in 2012 -

assisting clients to find their dream homes

has given me tremendous joy.”

Annette Kasselman is the director and co-owner of RealNet

Bloemfontein, and recipient of RealNet’s National Franchise of the Year

with seven consecutive awards. “I have the joyous job of bonding with

people and offering them my services in selling or buying a home for

their family. Adding to this, I am also assigned to the marketing of the

agency and promoting the business and the agents.”

“In my Real Estate career my defining moments include my first

successful transaction; when I received the title of Rookie of the

Year, followed by RealNet Properties’ Ambassador of the Year, and

the special value awards when I received the ‘Making a difference’

award and the ‘Abundance’ value award. Actually, every successful

transaction is a defining moment, when you manage to make dreams

a reality for families,” says Annette.

Her other endeavours include being a Brand Ambassador for ENGO

and Seamless1SA, which gives her the platform to live out her passion

for charity, paying it forward, and giving hope to others. She also

promotes the Bloem Rugby Academy on social media.

Her various career highlights include doing voice-overs and radio ads

for OFM, opening a successful modelling academy called @Models,

being a Free State Premier’s Award Nominee, being a finalist in SACBW

Business Woman of the Year, getting crowned Mrs South Africa, as well

as Mrs Worldwide in California, USA, to name a few.

At RealNet, they help fulfil people’s needs, dreams and aspirations and

actually make a positive difference in someone’s life.

“This career also offered me the option of working flexi hours, giving

me the time to spend with my family, next to the sports field or some

leisure time. There is no greater satisfaction than that of a happy

client’s expression on their face, walking into his dream home for the

first time.”

Annette mentions that her faith and family keep her going as she

knows that God would not have put her in this position if He didn’t

have a plan for a successful outcome.

“You are never too old to learn. Work hard, if at first you don’t succeed

- try and try again. Persevere and never give up. Be teachable,”

she advises.

Old school CHARM

Glamorous doesn’t come close to describing The Winchester Hotel ... the iconic hotel

with the most desirable location on Cape Town’s Sea Point Promenade.

Built a century ago as a residential

property, The Winchester Hotel,

managed by Newmark, really is

the grande dame of the Sea Point

Promenade ... a three-storey gabled

building which was converted into a

hotel in the late 1950s.

And despite having a revamp recently,

it still retains its classic attractions ...

it’s all elegant and well-bred and old

money. So it oozes glamour ... but

quietly. There’ll be no crass showing

off here, thank you.

The 1920s Cape Dutch-style hotel

dominates its location, sitting right

on the edge of the Atlantic Seaboard,

overlooking the ocean and the

pedestrian promenade which is the

heart of the city’s social hub.

It’s all old-school charm, from the tiny

parking lot hidden around the corner,

past the pool which could be straight

out of a golden age Hollywood movie,

to the quiet lobby, from where you’re

ushered off to your room. Just six

dozen or so - with lofts and suites and

a couple of family-friendly options,

with no rooms identically decorated,

but all with views over the sea or

that mountain!

Sticking with the less-is-more policy,

the hotel offers just the pool (with a

spa on the cards), a top-notch bar and

an amiable restaurant.

Harvey’s Bar, all midnight black and

light wood, is well-frequented by

locals (always a good sign), and serves

up creative cocktails and fine liqueurs,

as well as a small but well-thought

out menu for those who simply can’t

tear themselves away from the view.

A stone’s throw away is Shoreditch,

the hotel’s restaurant which has the

same restraint shown throughout

the venue. It’s quiet, and refined, and

quite lovely, with a menu that offers

sharing dishes like marinated olives

and fresh oysters, linefish ceviche

and wagyu sliders, unpretentious

steak rolls and mushroom risotto and

Caesar salad.

Breakfast, should the Cape weather be

generous, is served out in the central

courtyard ... black and white tiles and

a cascade of bougainvillea along with

your muesli and yoghurt ... marvellous.

As is, really, the whole Winchester

affair. A gorgeous hotel, with

everything you need for a quiet,

luxurious stay ... and with everything

else you may want - nightlife and

clubs and walks and swimming and

shopping and people watching

- literally on your doorstep.
