Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: It was the Saturday of the West Cape May Christmas 

Parade and due to its prime location along the parade route, we stopped 

for lunch at Exit Zero Filling Station. 

The vibe: They were fully in the Christmas spirit at the Filling Station. 

The dining room is decorated from top to bottom, private dining 

trailer outside are themed to Christmas movies including Elf, A Christmas 

Story and Home Alone. They’ve also got hot and cold winter cocktails 

on the menu through January (more on those later). Everyone was 

in high spirits as it was the day of the parade and the Filling Station’s 

pre-parade pregame was set up outside under the canopy despite the 

rain. Bartender Dale was serving up hot cocoa, mulled wine, cookies, 

popcorn, hot dogs and other fun snacks. It was a great pit stop for 

anyone heading to the parade, getting thirsty during the parade, or 

buy themselves some time while enjoying a drink before leaving town 

amidst the traffic. 

The drinks: Nicole and Dan met up with some friends, Jess and 

Colin, to get some drinks and snacks before making their way to a spot 

on the sidewalk. The aforementioned winter cocktails were a huge hit. 

Nicole and Jess each got a Holly Jolly and Dan went for the spiked hot 

cocoa. Colin enjoyed a classic Moscow mule but finished off with a 

delicious hot toddy. A couple rounds hit the table for sure. 

The food: We figured it was best to order a few appetizers that 

we could all share, so that’s exactly what we did. We dove into some 

disco fries, kraken wings, megatots, sticky Thai cauliflower bites and 

a Mumbai mezze platter. It was delicious and our sweet server Kelsey 

was awesome, as always. She kept our drinks filled and our table well 

equipped with napkins for the inevitable mess we made. 

The takeaway: Snacking on apps and grabbing a few drinks at the 

Filling Station is a great way to spend the afternoon. They’re open Mon- 

Fri 3-9pm and Sat-Sun 12-9pm. And don’t forget to try something from 

the winter cocktail menu before the season is over!

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence 

For someone who doesn’t do much 

these days (not for lack of trying, but 

more on that later) I had a pretty 

interesting week. Not as interesting 

as someone with, say, a full-time job, 

or a part-time job, or money, or prospects, or 

anything, really, but pretty interesting, nonetheless. 

(It’s possible I need therapy.) But 

Terry, you might ask, how can someone with 

so little going for them have such an interesting 

week? Hurtful, I’d remark, then I’d answer; 

Gig of the Week I: One silver lining of 

having my weekends free is that now when a 

friend calls and asks if I can cover a weekend, 

I can say, “Sure.” And it was with that level of 

excitement that I played my first gig at South 

9 last Saturday night with my main wing man, 

Jerry Kolber. (In this context, “wing man” 

refers to the guy who goes to battle with me, 

not, like, the second fiddle or anything. Jerry is 

a definite first fiddle.) South 9 is a new-ish bar 

that sits in the footprint of the old Atkinson’s 

in Cape May Court House. (Side bar; I used to 

host a Terry O’ke double at Atkinson’s back 

in the day, kids in the day, adults at night, 

kids show would get absolutely mobbed, adult 

show about three people would show up.) The 

place, a year old this month, looks great and 

still has that New-Bar Smell. The food looked 

and smelled fantastic, and it was good to see 

Liam Miller, behind the bar. 10/10. Would do 

it again. We were just filling in for a friend 

(Sugar Dave Hughes) and have no further 

shows scheduled there but maybe we made an 

impression. It was the second time in recent 

weeks a table thanked us for playing Avett 

Brothers. Smart table. 

Gig of the Week II: We followed our South 

9 Saturday night with a brisk and blustery 

Brown Room Sunday afternoon. We added 

Cathrine to this one and regaled the bar with 

our trio-y goodness. Nothing will make you 

feel cozier than a few cocktails by a roaring 

fireplace in a quiet room with lilting threepart 

harmonies washing over you. Our bartender 

and new best friend, Tamara, thinks we 

should be there every Sunday and dadgummit 

if I don’t agree with her. 

Sandy Mannik was at both gigs, a very 

patient Ralph in tow. (We love and appreciate 

you guys. Wendy and Randy Redelico better 

step it up, they’re in danger of losing their 

status as #1 Terry O’Brien Trio fans.) 

Birthday Boy of the Week: Ed McDonugh 

turned 60 or 110 or 55 or 90 or something last 

week. And when I saw him at Acme he told 

me my name came up while recording the latest 

episode of his Internet radio show, “A Few 

Guys, A Few Songs, A Few Stories.” Seeing 

Brady Schoenrock and Cousin Ray among 

the guest panelists, I am 100% certain I don’t

Speaking of music, WXPN 

is celebrating December with 

their 90s A-to-Z special. All 

90s, all month. In related news, 

I will be listening to WXP again 

in January. (Look, I know a lot 

of great music came out in the 

90s, including stellar albums by 

my favorites; REM, Squeeze and 

Billy Joel, but when I think “90s 

music” all I hear is three chords 

and whining. It’s also possible I 

hate 90s music because I had to 

memorize and sing most of it.) 

WCFA Song of the Week: 

“New Test Leper” by REM. 

Terrible name, beautiful song. 

Not For Lack of Trying of 

the Week: I’m three weeks into 

Internet job hunting and I’ve only 

contemplated self-harm about a 

dozen times. At first you start out 

like, “You know what? I’m only 

going to apply for jobs I know 

I’ll enjoy and thrive at.” This 

slowly evolves into, “You know 

what? This one’s not perfect but 

I can make it work.” Then there’s 

a few more levels, the accompanying 

depression, despair 

and stress-eating. Then there’s 

where I’m currently at; “You 

know what? Dog Ass Shampooer 

doesn’t sound so bad” while wiping 

away tears and shotgunning 

quarts of vodka. (This is a bit of 

a dramatization. I have no vodka. 

But if I did…) 

Last week I walked into 

Evolution Salon & Spa and got 

the evocative scent of hair dye 

and Chanel No. 5. This week I 

was greeted by the glorious Mann 

Stache; the fluffy cookie duster 

worn by stylist Scott Mann. It’s a 

real panty-dropper. 

Some weeks Exit Zero magazine 

arrives at 3am for me to 

deliver, other weeks it’s 7am, but 

no matter when I drop off at El 

Pueblo, it smells delicious. AND 

NOT OPEN YET. Life is cruel. 

Is it just me or does every dad 

have a fear of “not enough trash 

bags in the house” and ends up 

with six boxes of trash bags under 

the sink? 

Due to an outpouring of 

Facebook pressure (two people 

said it was good) I’ve given 

Yellowstone a second chance and, I 

have to admit, it’s got its hooks in 

me. I’m not sure it’s very good, but 

it IS preposterous, fast-paced and 

well-acted. And Kevin Costner 

is right behind Tom Cruise on 

my list of Great American Movie 

Stars. He might even be a little 

ahead. But don’t tell Tom. 

The Big Brunch is Dan Levy’s 

new cooking competition on 

HBO Max. I’ll admit to never finishing 

Schitt’s Creek because it all 

got a little too much, but like most 

of America, I fell in love with Dan 

on that show. His gentle, genial 

presence informs this whole production 

and, while it gets a little 

too identity politic-y for me (I 

just want to watch them cook), 

I get it. And if I do one thing in 

this life, I hope I get successful 

enough to be a guest on a cooking 

competition show. 

This week in Terry Finally 

Watches All the Hot Shows from 

2014, I’m into my second season 

of Boardwalk Empire and it’s… 

not good? I think it’s not good. 

Steve Buscemi is a fine supporting 

actor. The mistake this show 

makes is putting him front and 

center, exposing his weaknesses 

as a leading man. The Sopranos 

was an all-time classic because 

you believed that at any moment, 

a smiling, happy, jocular Tony 

Soprano could erupt in fury and 

destroy everything around him. 

Steve Buscemi in these moments 

just kind of seems dyspeptic and 

mildly annoyed, like he needs an 

antacid. Next week I’ll be doing a 

deep dive on Seinfeld.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

It is my custom to sit on my back porch 

at dawn to take the pulse of the universe 

and assess the progress of our planet. I 

don’t get paid for this, nobody appointed 

me planetary custodian, it’s just my way 

of being grounded. So it is my privilege to 

tell you that even if the human world appears 

chaotic and off the wheels, the natural world 

is right on track and winter has arrived right 

on time and the winter pattern is upon us. The 

birds who are nature’s envoys, told me so. 

It was clear and cold last night, perfect 

migration conditions for late-migrating species. 

One of the first sounds I heard was the 

bleat of a robin. You are probably thinking, 

“American Robin is a harbinger of Spring.” Yes 

and no. Here in Cape May, robins are found 

year-round. Not the same robins and not 

engaged in the same daily pattern. Our breeding 

robins are long gone. Safely ensconced in 

orchards and berry-rich woodlands across the 

southeastern United States. The bird I heard 

this morning was likely a northern breeder, a 

bird raised in a willow thicket in Labrador or 

Northern Quebec, where winter is never far 

away. Hardy almost beyond reckoning, these 

sturdy northern breeders will be here all winter, 

roosting by the thousands in White Cedar 

stands and open marsh. 

During the day they fan out to forage, for 

the most part, on the bounty of holly berries 

embedded in our woodlands and suburban 

yards. Snow? What of it? The berries are festooned 

above the forest floor. Add a little open 

water, robins are compulsive bathers, and 

South Jersey becomes the American Robin’s 

perfect winter retreat. Or would be, were 

it not for the bounty of wintering Cooper’s 

Hawks who include robins on their menu. 

Once considered an Endangered 

Species in New Jersey, the torpedo-shaped, 

bird-hunting hawks haunt bird feeders and 

keep wintering Mourning Doves and pigeons 

on high alert. John James Audubon even knew 

Cooper’s Hawk as “the great pigeon hawk,” a 

reference to its partiality to Passenger Pigeon, 

a species once accounted the most abundant 

terrestrial life form on the planet. Following 

the demise of the Passenger Pigeon, Cooper’s 

Hawks diversified their epicurean portfolios. 

Today they flourish in the hybrid habitat we 

call suburbia, finding just the right mix of 

broken vegetation and Cooper’s-sized prey. 

By feeding birds in your backyard, you 

are not causing them to be killed, only killed 

where you will observe the drama. Cooper’s 

Hawks are going to kill and consume two 

birds a day one way or the other. Live with it.

It’s hard to believe the holiday season 

is here. The town is all decked out in 

Victorian splendor, and you’re hopefully 

spending time with friends and family in 

the upcoming weeks. Why not celebrate 

it with a new take on a holiday classic? A 

Christmas Story Christmas is a proper update of 

the 1983 original. In recent years, the classic 

has run on a continuous holiday loop on some 

channels. Now HBO Max is streaming the 

new movie, and Peter Billingsly (Ralphie) is 

back in the lead role. 

In 2012, studios attempted a sequel, A 

Christmas Story 2, and failed miserably. They 

did not bring back many (if any) of the original 

cast, and it bombed with both critics 

and fans. Sequel aside, this year’s A Christmas 

Story Christmas gives us a modern look at the 

storyline with all the familiar faces. Ralphie is 

determined to become a published writer of a 

Great American Novel, and he comes home to 

help his new family celebrate Christmas. He 

is supported by his wife Sandy (Erinn Hayes) 

and his two children, Mark (River Drosche) 

The Movie Column

The original book that inspired the movie 

was from author Jean Shepherd, and he 

wrote the series of stories from his childhood 

for Playboy in the 1960s. The collection of 

semi-autobiographical stories was published 

under the title “In God We Trust, All Others 

Pay Cash.” In 1983, the film was released as A 

Christmas Story. The rest is history. 

Without giving too much away, Ralphie 

receives some support from several familiar 

faces. In addition to the support, his family 

and friends also stand by him through a huge 

and heartbreaking family setback. This movie 

has been far better received by critics and 

audiences than its first sequel. You can hardly 

call this franchise a trilogy, but now at least 

there is a respectable refresh. This movie also 

comes with some valuable lessons. One great 

lesson learned is that the family and friends 

you surround yourself with is the best kind of 

hope. Also, some simple, but profound lessons 

in this movie are to stay true to yourself 

and never give upon your dreams. Sure, it’s 

not a quest for an official Red Ryder carbine 

action, 200-shot, range model air rifle with a 

compass… but it works.

When you’re the person in charge 

of creating holiday magic, it’s 

easy to believe that everything 

was better in the past. You can 

drive yourself crazy trying to 

match some idealized vision of your own 

childhood. Let’s face it, most things are better 

when you’re young because someone else is 

in charge of making things merry. (Also, most 

things are more fun BECAUSE you’re young.) 

While you’re working to make others happy 

this season, treat yourself, too. 

Act like a child this December. Keep 

secrets and hide presents — no one is too 

sophisticated for surprises, even if the surprise 

is a gift card for an oil change or a donation 

to a good cause. Stir your hot chocolate 

with a candy cane. Sing carols at the top of 

your lungs. Play games that make you laugh. 

Wear reindeer earrings and an unfortunate 

sweater and relish any eyerolls they bring — 

someday you’ll miss these teen years. Listen 

to soothing audiobooks while baking cookies 

to give away. Schedule an upside-down day, 

where you eat pizza for breakfast and scrambled 

eggs for dinner. Ride your bike to the post 

office to mail a letter. Dress in a fancy outfit 

for dinner and take selfies. 

Do a “touristy” Cape May thing you’ve

Mia to enjoy over late-night chit chat. Let 

someone tell you a story — “master storyteller”

I hosted our family’s Thanksgiving dinner 

and was appalled that at the end of the meal, all 

the men escaped to the family room to watch 

football, leaving the women and kids to cleanup. 

It’s not that there weren’t enough hands 

on deck, it’s that not one of them even offered. 

What do I do? Christmas Eve and The Seven 

Fishes is coming up. I don’t want to go all 

preachy on them but come on. Putting dishes 

in the dishwasher or clearing the table is not a 

gender-specific chore. — Dish Pan Hands

You could ask them. Sans preaching. 

You can’t expect a group of people to behave 

differently than they have for decades, if not 

their whole lives. Do you think they noticed

it bothered you? Of course not. At the end of 

meal, lightheartedly say, “Guys if you want 

dessert or another meal ever again, give us 

hand with these dishes.” A little coaxing may 

be needed with the aid of your female team, 

but they’ll get with the program, even it’s just 

their dishes, which would be a great start. And 

make sure you get to the Lobster House early 

to secure your seafood selection, or you won’t 

have to worry about dishes.

My wife is getting on my nerves. She never 

puts her phone down. We were just at Grana 

for dinner and she played scrabble the entire 

time. We had quite a row about it and I’m not 

backing down. I refuse to go out with her if she 

takes that phone. Better yet, I’ll go to dinner 

without her. Hell, I’m alone anyway when she’s 

at the table. In the living room. In bed. And our 

kids are following suite. They’re young but I 

can see the pattern beginning. It’s just wrong.

You have made your feelings known. The 

Answer Lady suggests you take your wife out 

to dinner, explaining it is a romantic dinner. 

The Ebbitt Room or Pier One would be two of 

many options. See if she uses her phone. If so, 

her phone addiction is the least of your worries. 

Either she needs therapy, or you both need 

marriage counseling. As for your kids, take 

the phones away and when you return them, 

provide rules regarding its usage. Suggest to 

your wife that she set an example as well.

HARLEY is a three-year-old, 75-pound mastiff 

mix who thinks he’s a lap dog. He loves 

people and will spend as much time as he can 

with them to enjoys pets. Harley has good 

leash manners and is learning more useful 

behavior cues. He also loves long car rides. 

Harley would be best as the only pet in the 

house but is very good with children. 

NALA is a happy and social two-year-old girl. 

She has a lot of energy and loves to play fetch 

and run around the yard. Once she works off 

that energy, she relaxes easily and loves to be 

pet. Nala’s leash-walking skills are improving 

daily, and she enjoys investigating her surroundings. 

She has lived with children before 

but needs a slow introduction to cats. 

CARMINE is an adorable, four-year-old mini 

doodle. He came to the shelter because he is 

fearful of men and can snap — only four times 

in four years. You’d never believe it after meeting 

him — he is extremely friendly and playful 

and requires a slow introduction to men. A 

woman owner who is patients with his anxiety 

would be best for Carmine.

who came to the shelter after 14 years in her 

home. Her owner fell ill, and it was decided 

that it was best to find Meatball a new home. 

She has a very sweet nature and in in very 

good health. Meatball would be good in a 

home with other cats, dogs and children and 

she is up to date on all vaccinations. 

MYSTIQUE is a 12-week-old ball of energy! 

She was found near the dumpster at the shelter 

in the rain, malnourished and shivering. 

Mystique needs a warm and loving home to 

truly take care of her. She’s ready for a busy 

and happy home with lots of toys to play with. 

Mystique would be good in a home with other 

cats, dogs and children. 

BEANS is an older boy who came to the shelter 

when he was found by a student near a 

school in Woodbine. He is believed to have 

had an owner, but no one has called looking 

for him. Beans doesn’t like being caged, but 

is loving, social and friendly. His age doesn’t 

slow him down and he would be great with 

other cats and children.
