Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Wednesday December 7 2022 Selwyn Times GARDENING 49 Keep moisture levels up during heat IT’S NOW LESS than a month to harvest summer vegetables and prepare the garden for Christmas and New Year holidays. Houseplant care As many houseplants originate from tropical countries, they grow best in the warmer summer New Zealand months. Water and fertilise regularly to take advantage of this growing season. There are now a wide range of houseplants available so be adventurous in trying to grow some new, exotic specimens. Vegetable garden All summer vegetables are making very rapid growth and, in many cases, providing food for the table. With quick maturing vegetables such as dwarf beans and radishes, sow limited amounts at three to four week intervals. Vegetables to harvest include asparagus (the last for the season), beetroot, beans, cabbage, carrots, lettuce, onion, silver beet and spinach. For late summer harvesting, continue to plant or sow, beans, beetroot, cabbage, carrots, corn, cucumbers, onions, radishes, lettuce, silver beet, tomatoes, and zucchini. As these vegetables will be growing during the hottest months of the year, extra care in preparing the soil is essential. Add large quantities of compost THIRSTY: Regular, deep watering is key to your plants surviving summer. to the existing soil to help with water retention in February/ March. A side dressing of vegetable fertiliser will help encourage strong, healthy plant growth. Irrigate the vegetables when required and in adequate quantities. In the flower bed Summer flower gardens should be well established by now providing superb displays of flowers. Dead head (the removal of finished flowers) as required. Water regularly as the soil begins to dry out. Additional plantings of the following summer annuals can be made alyssum, aster, celosia, cosmos, marigold, petunia, salvia, strawflower, portulaca and zinnias. Strawberries December is the main harvest time for strawberries, hopefully enough for Christmas lunch. Cover the plants with bird netting securely to keep away our feathered friends. Water when required as temperatures rise and the soil dries. Maintain a layer of clean crushed bark around plants and inspect them regularly for signs of botrytis – a grey fungus mould that affects the fruit. Raspberries December is the main month for harvesting raspberries, pick the fruit as they ripen on the canes. Where there is excessive growth of new canes, remove the weaker ones. Tie up canes to wires or a wooden fence. Fruit trees A further application of fertiliser can be made early in the month. Some light pruning on pip and stone fruit trees may be required where there are unwanted branches and to improve provide airflow throughout the tree. With very young trees irrigate regularly to encourage a strong, deep root system. Rose care Towards the end of the month the early seasons flowering will be completed, except with roses like iceberg that just continue flowering all summer. With other roses a light ‘tidy up’ prune will stimulate new growth that in turn will produce more summer blooms. Early December is the correct time to apply a final amount of rose fertiliser. Fertilising can recommence again in March as temperatures cool somewhat. Continue adding compost around the base of bush and climbing roses, which works as both mulch and a soil conditioner. Lawns Many lawns dry very quickly towards the end of the month and should be watered frequently (best done in the evening to maximise water usage). Avoid cutting the lawn too close as this causes the lawn to dry out even quicker. Herbs Should be incredibly abundant at this time of the year with some exceptionally vigorous growing herbs, trim lightly if you are not using them. Plant additional parsley and chives as required. Basil will now thrive with increased temperatures. Preparing your garden Have a plan for your garden if you are heading away. Water is the most crucial element in ensuring your plants survive summer. Invest in a water timer or ask neighbours to water your garden deeply a few times a week. Before you leave, harvest anything that is almost ripe and ensure plants that need support are well staked and secured. Weed your garden so they are not competing with your plants for water, then add a generous layer of mulch to help keep soil moist. Inside, put your indoor plants in a bathtub with a small amount of water at the bottom. Ensure there is drainage holes in the pots so the plant can take up the water.
