How to build a bridge 

in under 60 minutes

HOW TO construct a 

suspension bridge in under 

an hour. That’s what 

pupils at Raekura Redcliffs 

School learned to do last 

week. 

A hands-on engineering 

workshop, called Bridges to 

Schools, kicked off for the first 

time in the South Island 

with a visit to the school, 

coupled with a challenge 

– to work in teams to 

construct a 13-metre long 

bridge.

created by the Institution 

of Civil Engineers, in

New World

THE FORMER New World 

Supermarket in Redcliffs is likely 

to become a Fletcher Living 

apartment complex. City council 

records show the property has 

been purchased by Fletcher 

Residential Ltd for $5.5 million. 

Fletcher Living has confirmed 

it is investigating options for residential 

use. A spokesperson said 

the development will be subject 

to a number of consents, which it 

will be applying for next year. 

The company declined to give 

any details about what is has 

planned, but Bay Harbour News 

understands an option is to 

deconstruct part of the building 

but keep the structure. That might 

include keeping the ground-level 

car park. 

The city council confirmed 

building consents have not yet 

been lodged, so it is unclear if the 

building will remain three stories 

or if it might be built taller. The 

2800 sq m site is zoned for commercial 

use. 

Redcliffs New World was 

rebuilt in 2015, after the original 

supermarket was closed and 

then demolished following the 

February 22, 2011 earthquake.

employed about 100 staff. 

Five years later staff numbers 

had reduced by about 50 per cent, 

and 19 then lost their jobs when 

the store was rebranded as Four 

Square in June 2020. 

Less than a year later, in April 

2021, the Four Square closed as 

well. 

Foodstuffs said at the time it 

was not sustainable and it was 

looking at alternative options for 

the use of the building, which 

might include selling or leasing 

the site.

Funding blow for medical centre

THE COMMUNITY group 

fundraising to renovate and 

extend the Diamond Harbour 

Medical Centre is unlikely to get 

funding from the Government. 

Diamond Harbour & 

Districts Health Support Group 

spokesperson Gay Pavelka was 

disappointed with the decision 

made after a meeting with 

representatives of Te Whata 

Ora – Health New Zealand last 

week. 

“We were hoping our national 

health body might support us,” 

said Pavelka. 

“That seemed totally 

reasonable to us, but no.” 

The community is part way 

towards raising the $600,000 

needed to complete the project. 

It has so far raised more than 40 

per cent of the total costs, but 

needs another $200,000 before 

work can start and another 

$350,000 to fully fund the 

development. 

“The Te Whata Ora managers 

were full of praise for our 

planning, preparation and the 

level of community fundraising 

support. So lots of love and 

warm fuzzies but, within their 

system, no allocation of funds,” 

said Pavelka. 

The Diamond Harbour 

Medical Centre is unusual 

because it’s fully communityowned 

and leased on a notfor-profit 

basis to the local 

medical practice. That makes 

the service more affordable for 

the community, but because the 

community owns the centre the 

Government won’t help fund it, 

said Pavelka. 

Te Whatu Ora executive 

director Sandy McLean 

confirmed it takes responsibility 

for funding health services 

but facilities are generally the 

provider’s responsibility, she 

said. 

However, Te Whatu Ora 

has agreed to explore any 

exceptional avenues for support 

of the upgrade, she said. 

The new wing and renovations 

at the centre are needed to meet 

the current national health 

standards and provide better 

spaces for staff and patients, 

including consulting rooms, a 

new respiratory diseases’ area, 

and better disabled access. 

“What we have discovered 

is that for rural New Zealand’s 

primary care services there is a 

real gap – and that’s frustrating,” 

said Pavelka. 

“It’s therefore left to the

planned to start about June next

Coastal house prices look set to buck

speculates about property prices 

falling, it seems the opposite 

may be true in much of the Bay 

Harbour News area. 

Economists are predicting a 

fall in house prices nationally 

of about 20 per cent over the 

next year or so. The ANZ goes 

further, saying house prices will 

drop 32 per cent, wiping out the 

capital gains of 2021. 

However, there appears to be 

real confidence in the bay area.

Recent house sales show prices

In Sumner, sales figures show 

properties continue to sell for 50 

per cent or more over their rateable 

values, in spite of fears about 

interest rates ballooning and sea 

level rise. 

House sales in Akaroa are also 

holding up, with only a small 

price drop (two per cent) yearon-year, 

according to the latest 

CoreLogic statistics, while house 

sales in Lyttelton remain much 

the same. 

In Sumner, a single storey 

bungalow in Burgess St sold two 

weeks ago to a private buyer 

for $1.65m, nearly 60 per cent 

over Rateable Value, while a 

renovated 1980s home in Finnsarby 

Pl went for $950,000, 51 

per cent over RV. In September, 

a character two-storey villa on 

the Esplanade sold at auction for 

2.55m, 50 per cent over RV. 

According to realestate.co.nz, 

the median house price in 

Sumner over the past 12 months 

has been over a million dollars, 

up 21 per cent on the previous 

year and, if what local agents are 

saying is true, those increases 

might hold.

today,” he said. “Generally they 

agree the prices would be much

are looking elsewhere,” he said. 

At the same time, he said, there 

is no evidence existing residents 

living on the flat are looking to 

move higher up either. 

“If anything, the opposite is 

true,” he said. 

“More people are wanting to 

come down onto the flat . . . people 

who have been in the area for 

years and just want somewhere 

more accessible.” 

More development in the 

Sumner village area, including 

improvements to the roads, a 

reduced speed limit and the 

nearly-finished coastal pathway 

will also help lift the market, 

Prier said.

Church because I know they 

provide food parcels for the

EVERY TUESDAY you’ll find 

Quentin McDonald doing his 

weekly trap check in Cracroft 

Reserve, next to the Sign of the 

Takehe. 

A retired chemist, he’s been 

doing this volunteer work for 

the past four years, after his 

son’s scout den in Cashmere 

started getting “eaten alive” 

by rats gnawing through 

everything they could find, 

including books. 

After contacting Predator Free 

Port Hills and making a formal 

arrangement with city council 

rangers, McDonald set up and 

started monitoring 11 traps 

placed around the reserve. 

“The scouts assembled those 

original wooden boxes and 

placed them as a map-reading 

exercise,” he said. 

“I’ve caught 160 rats over four 

years and 80 of those were in the 

first year, 2019. They’ve nearly 

all been ship rats, which you can 

tell if you fold the tail over the 

body and the tail’s longer.” 

McDonald uses American-made 

Victor traps and 

places them inside the wooden 

boxes. Catches are recorded on 

graphs which show rats are far 

and away the most common 

predator, along with a few mice, 

a very occasional hedgehog and 

one or two stoats. 

Using an ink card to track animal 

footprints is another way 

of monitoring the rat population 

in the reserve. 

It’s the winter months that see 

the biggest spike in catch numbers 

as there’s less natural food 

available so they come in closer 

to where humans live. 

Perhaps due to his scientific 

background, McDonald enjoys 

recording the data and experiments 

with different types of 

food and trap placement. 

“They love the trees, it’s like a 

highway for them in here. They 

like drains and damp areas as 

well; I try and choose places that 

‘feel ratty.’ 

“I do move the traps but not 

very far because they don’t have 

a big range, it’s generally only 

around 50m.” 

Because rats are known to be 

or become shy of the boxes, at 

times he places ink cards nearby 

which creatures walk over, 

leaving their foot prints on the 

un-inked part of the card. 

“It’s another way of monitoring 

the population.” 

For bait McDonald has traditionally 

used walnuts and Nutella, 

as rats are thought to have a 

sweet tooth, but he’s currently 

trialling a ceramic bait to see if 

that is more attractive. 

He is one of hundreds of 

people across Christchurch 

and Banks Peninsula who are 

helping to reduce the population 

of predators through backyard 

and community trapping.

into the man behind the machines

racing career illustrates not only 

his success, but also his hard 

work, dedication to fitness and 

diet, along with a myriad of 

health issues and the value of 

friendship and loyalty.

been well-documented. 

It was a 

career that brought 

him success at the wheel of both 

circuit racing and rally cars. For 

the most part, he also built the 

cars – more than 20 were built 

at his own city workshop. At the 

other end of the spectrum was 

his time driving thoroughbred 

BMWs, where he also achieved 

considerable success. 

Few drivers in New Zealand, if 

any, can claim to have achieved 

what Crowe – he lives in Sumner 

– has over such a wide spectrum 

of the sport. Competition

has involved racing on the 

purpose-built tracks and street 

circuits, plus gravel events with 

rally and hillclimb cars. The true 

significance of Crowe’s success 

is it has been achieved at local, 

national and international levels. 

On the track Crowe has won 

the New Zealand Touring Car 

Championship and the Asia Pacific 

Touring Car Championship. 

He was third in a Wellington 

street race, and fourth in the 

world acclaimed Bathurst 1000. 

(All of these driving BMWs.) 

Added to this are four Open 

Saloon Car Championship titles, 

along with a win in the New 

Zealand Sports Sedan Championship 

driving V8 powered 

Toyota Starlets. 

Crowe was the first South 

Island driver to win the prestigious 

Ashley Forest Rallysprint 

in 1985 and has won 10 different 

regional rallies, together with 

the Coronet Peak Hill Climb, the 

Race to the Sky hillclimb and the 

overall New Zealand Hillclimb 

Championship. He has also 

raced a jet boat in Mexico. 

Behind this success has been 

Crowe’s physical fitness, thanks 

primarily to an introduction 

from his partner Colleen, a 

physical education instructor. 

It is this fitness that has helped 

him maintain focus during 

endurance racing. Running, in 

particular, has also seen him 

compete in the Paris and London 

marathons, which then followed 

the Coast to Coast, just to test his 

fitness further. 

The book also includes the 

latter periods of major health 

issues. Prostate cancer, a brain 

bleed and bladder cancer have all 

interrupted Crowe’s seemingly 

healthy and adventurous lifestyle. 

It is fortunate he has come 

through these issues and continues 

to work and play with cars. 

So does he have a favourite 

discipline? 

“Rallying gives you more kilometres 

for your dollar and it can 

be very taxing, but so very satisfying 

at the end,” Crowe says. 

“The long distance races 

called on a lot of stamina so I 

am pleased that I have always 

kept myself fit. Racing also gave 

me many memorable moments. 

I loved the fast circuits where 

the old airfield at Wigram was 

a stand out. It had bumps, tight 

area around the hangars with off 

camber, a long main straight and 

a hairpin at the end of it.” 

Now 77, Crowe has continues 

to work his car business. With 

his health issues now aside, 

he reflects how thankful he is 

to have come through these 

challenges and looks forward to 

the next adventure.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas 

Christmas is a great time for passing down recipes that are tried and true becoming 

traditional family favourites. The owner of this recipe says her mum used to make 

the pudding on Christmas Eve and would take the bowl and wooden spoon around 

everyone in the house to stir the mixture and make a wish. 

Make a Wish Christmas Pudding 

You will need: 

• 1 ½ tbsp butter 

• 1 ½ tsp baking soda 

• 1 ½ cups of boiling water 

• 1 ½ cups flour 

• 1 ½ cups mixed fruit or sultanas 

• ¾ cup sugar 

Method: 

1. In a glass or stainless steel bowl, 

melt the butter (over hot water) 

and dissolve the baking soda. 

2. Add the boiling water and 

sugar. 

3. When cool, add flour and 

mixed fruit. 

4. Stir all the ingredients together 

and make a Christmas wish. 

5. Cover bowl with a tea towel and 

allow to stand overnight. 

The next day: 

• Place mixture into a greased 

bowl or ice-cream container, 

cover with tinfoil and place in a 

pot of water, just deep enough 

so the bowl doesn’t float. 

• Boil pudding for four hours and 

check regularly to make sure 

the water has boiled dry. Top 

up carefully with extra water if 

required. 

• Serve with heaps of Chantilly 

cream!

Cream 

You will need: 

• 1 x bottle of cream 

• ½ tsp vanilla essence 

• 1 tbsp icing sugar to 

sweeten 

Method: 

Put cream, vanilla essence 

and icing sugar in a bowl and 

whisk until light and fluffy with 

softly formed peaks. Cover and 

refrigerate until ready to serve.

Sumner-Ferrymead Foundation grants 

IN JANUARY 2023, applications for 

scholarships will open. 

These are awards made to people 

in tertiary education and training 

to help them with the cost of their 

studies. 

These people may be at university 

or perhaps doing an apprenticeship 

for a trade. The awards are for 

amounts between $2000 and $5000. 

This will be the third year that 

the Sumner-Ferrymead Foundation 

has granted scholarships. Last year 

we gave awards to people who were 

studying: 

•Sciences. 

•Health sciences. 

•Humanities. 

•Commerce, finance and 

marketing. 

We also gave grants for the cost 

of attendance at Outward Bound 

courses and an Environmental/ 

Sustainability award. 

In addition, we have made two 

awards to apprentices to help 

purchase tools for their trades. In 

2023, we expect to make a new set of 

awards in all areas. 

Most of these awards are sponsored 

by companies and individuals. For 

example, the award for the commerce 

student was sponsored by FANZ 

Private Wealth (a subsidiary of SBS

grant of $2500 to help with tuition 

fees and was also given a 10-week 

paid internship with FANZ Private 

Wealth.While some of these awards

Most of the scholarship awards are 

for second year students and are paid 

when students pass their courses. 

Last year the panel members who 

interviewed the applicants were 

delighted with the quality of the 

people who had applied. 

For example, we had intended 

to make grants for only one 

apprenticeship – but the two people 

who applied were so impressive and 

worthy that we decided to help them 

both! 

These scholarships and awards 

are an excellent example of locals 

helping locals and they have been so 

successful that we hope to continue 

to extend them. 

We would encourage people in 

training and tertiary education to 

look at the awards early next year to 

see what is on offer. We have already 

helped people with their cost of 

education, and we expect to help 

many more. Keep your eye out for 

applications to open in January.

Treasures from the Past: 

Orton Bradley 

THIS RATHER dapper 

gentleman is the visionary Orton 

Bradley, pictured in 1935 towards 

the end of his long life. 

It was due to this man’s widespread 

interests and commitment 

to his local area that the present 

day, beautifully wooded park at 

Te Wharau Charteris Bay exists. 

Orton Bradley Park is a 

privately owned, not-for-profit 

enterprise run by a trust, 

accessible via a modest entry 

fee for those wanting to enjoy 

its walks, mountain bike trails, 

historic buildings and specialist 

horticultural collection. 

In pre-European times the 

land and sea around Te Wharau 

Charteris Bay, in which Orton 

Bradley Park lies, was an important 

mahinga kai (area of natural 

resources) for tangata whenua, 

offering the bounty of oyster 

beds, flounder, eels, considerable 

bird life and flax stands. From 

as early as the 1820s, European 

sealers, whalers and flax traders 

showed a commercial interest in 

this landscape. 

In 1845 the Manson and Gebbie 

families leased a block of land 

for £20 per annum from local iwi. 

Samuel Manson constructed a 

stone shepherd’s cottage in 1848, 

which is believed to be the earliest 

stone structure in Canterbury. 

Orton Bradley 

In 1852 the Mansons and Gebbies 

were advised that the Canterbury 

Association had rightful 

ownership, having purchased the 

land from local Maori; the two 

families moved away. 

Dr Thomas Moore then acquired 

a 50-acre block from the 

association, building a substantial 

timber cottage to house his 

wife and five children. In spite 

of both practising as a doctor in 

Ōhinehou Lyttelton and running 

a dairy herd, which provided 

meat and cheese to the region, 

his endeavours did not meet with 

financial success. Consequently, 

he sold the land in 1858 to concentrate 

on a medical practice in 

Riccarton. 

Reverend Robert Bradley was 

the next owner, a man of means 

from Kirkby Stephen, United 

Kingdom. After graduating from 

Durham University and having 

spent time in Cape Coast, West 

Africa, where his first wife died, 

he remarried a first cousin, Frances, 

and moved to New Zealand. 

Initially serving as vicar of 

St Paul’s Anglican Church in 

Papanui, he soon realised his 

passion lay more in farming and 

he resigned as incumbent of that 

parish. The reverend actively set 

out to increase his landholding in 

the bay; by 1861 his estate totalled 

1600 acres and his offspring nine, 

although two of those children 

died in infancy. 

All of the Bradley children were 

born deaf with the exception of 

eldest son Reginald Orton, born 

on August 9, 1857, who inherited 

the property on his father’s death 

in 1892. Orton’s primary passion 

lay in science and technology; 

he leased some of the land for 

small dairy and market garden

holdings in order to concentrate 

on his wide range of interests, 

including but not limited to 

equine breeding, brewing, 

geology, ecology, horticulture and 

engineering. 

In 1902 he devised an 

innovative system to power his 

house and various machinery via 

a water wheel-driven generator 

becoming the first to have electric 

lighting on Banks Peninsula. 

Never marrying, alongside 

his numerous interests he was 

actively involved in local body 

politics, including holding the 

chair of the Mt Herbert County 

Council during World War 1. 

However, it is arguably Orton 

Bradley’s extensive planting of 

specimen trees both on his land 

and further afield in Lyttelton and 

Akaroa, with the aim of assessing 

their suitability for local conditions, 

that has been his lasting 

legacy. 

At the time of his death in 1943, 

aged 86, he left the land in trust 

for future use as a National Park. 

Although the land did not in fact 

meet the criteria for National 

Park status, his generosity paved 

the way for the formal opening of 

the park to the public in 1981. 

Today’s complex features 

Manson’s stone building, carefully 

restored post the earthquakes of 

2010 and 2011, and neighbouring, 

heritage-listed millhouse, stables 

and machinery shed. 

A replica of an early colonial 

home from the 1850s houses a 

cafe and there is an 1870s wooden 

school house, which was relocated 

from Charteris Bay in 1973. 

Still a working farm, Orton 

Bradley Park is a Whakaraupō 

Lyttelton Harbour jewel, enjoyed 

by many for its campground, 

cafe and picnic facilities, annual 

spring fair, walkways through 

bush and exotic plantings, 

outdoor education opportunities, 

rich history (including a recently 

opened museum), and as a 

gateway to Te Ahu Pātiki Mt 

Herbert.

Letter from the Principal 

Kia ora from Marian College, 

This has been a year of challenges and change for all of us. At Marian College 

we celebrated our 40 year anniversary this year, and held a lovely celebration 

attended by first principal Sr Eleanor Capper and “first day” teacher Kathy 

Seaward. We have also valued reconnecting with our past pupils and whānau 

this year. 

2023 brings great excitement for Marian College as we will move into our new 

home in Papanui. The project is progressing at pace, and thank you to the 

Catholic Diocesan team, Armitage Williams, Sheppard and Rout and all those 

involved. 

It seems quite a long time ago that we were in the midst of Covid restrictions 

at school and in the wider community. Our students and staff adapted very 

well to learning from home when necessary, but certainly appreciated being 

back together again. They have continued to be involved in all areas of school 

life, participating in local, regional, and national cultural and sporting events 

while navigating the challenges of living in Covid times. 

Thank you to our school community for your support this year. We look 

forward to the joy and blessings of Christmas and a well-deserved holiday 

break with family and friends.

Family support means the world to Dux recipient 

When Anna McKey was announced as 

Dux of the College for 2022, she couldn’t 

help but feel gratitude for her family. 

“My family have always been my biggest 

supporters who’ve encouraged me to 

keep trying my best 

and have seen me put 

100% into my work year 

after year, so they were 

so incredibly proud 

and happy. I don’t think 

they’ve stopped smiling 

ever since.” 

Anna said she had 

worked hard every year 

since starting at Marian 

College, but this year was 

particularly important 

with her strong results 

leading to potential 

scholarships at Otago University where 

she will study towards a Bachelor of 

Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. 

However, her parents always helped her 

stay grounded. 

“My parents were always my biggest fans 

reminding me it doesn’t matter your results 

as long as you know you tried your best so 

I always kept that in mind. I knew they had 

invested so much into my education and 

were so proud of everything I had achieved, 

so I particularly wanted to 

do well for them,” she said. 

Being announced as Dux of 

the College was a moment 

to remember. 

“To see not only my results 

from this year pay off, but 

my dedication to my learning 

since I started at Marian 

in Year 9 come to such a 

rewarding finish was one of 

the best feelings I’ve honestly 

ever experienced. Receiving 

a standing ovation was just 

mind blowing and in the 

moment everything was just a blur. 

“ I would like to thank the teachers at 

Marian who have always supported me and 

been so dedicated to helping me succeed.”

Commission of Justice & Peace’s Essay 

Competition. 

The topic was ‘Describe a time when 

an act of racism has been recognized 

in Aotearoa New Zealand. How can 

Catholic Social Teaching prevent future 

similar events?’ 

After being approached to enter the 

competition by her Religious Education 

teacher, Stella initially decided she 

wouldn’t enter, but as she reflected on 

the topic of racism she changed her mind. 

“I have a lot of friends from different 

cultures, and I suspect they would have 

experienced racism before,” she said. 

Stella chose to focus her essay on the 

March 15 Mosque attacks. 

“I thought about it and that was the one 

event that really stood out to me. Racism 

has always been present in New Zealand, 

but it wasn’t until the mosque shootings 

that we really acknowledged that it was 

here – it was so in your face. It was a shock 

to everyone that this could happen here in 

New Zealand,” Stella said. 

The Catholic Social Teachings which she 

wrote about were relevant to everyone, 

Catholic or not. 

“They are the basis of being a good human 

being and we need to apply them in our 

lives and just do it all the time. No matter 

whether you’re Catholic or not, it’s about 

the moral values that we have.” 

Stella said she was “so excited” to find out 

she had won the competition. 

“I didn’t think I could actually win it. Mum 

and Dad were really proud of me,” she said.
