Fader Findings
We are interested in the Fader family due to the marriage between Ezra Fader and Vandace
Martin. Their marriage registration lists Ezra’s parents as John and Margaret but does not give
his mother’s maiden name. Ezra was easy to find in the 1871 and 1881 census reports with his
parents and siblings. His brother Martin’s marriage registration provides mother’s maiden name
as Jackson. It turns out that Margaret’s parents, Elija and Hanna, are shown in the next
household to John and Margaret in 1871 Mountain Township.
It would appear, after a careful examination of the Veeter/Feeter/Feader/Fader data on the web
site http://www.fortklock.com/feetergenealogy.htm and a comparison with the 1852 Canadian
Census, that Ezra Fader’s father, John, was the son of Lucas Fader and Margaret McFadden.
The family name changes radically over time but it is all one family. All of the Faders in Matilda
Township in 1852 are easily traced back to the same family. There is currently a gap in
published census reports for Matilda Township so further research is required regarding this
conclusion. The Fetter genealogy (prepared in1901) allows us to create the following pedigree
for Ezra and Vandace’s children.
Lucas Vetter
Maria Serviss
Lucas was usually the name of the first-born son in this family. Lucas Feader, the United
Empire Loyalist (also seen as Fader but Vetter is the correct German name) was actually the
son of the first Lucas Vetter on the chart above. The Vetter family was from Stone Arabia, NY
where they were friends of Sir John Johnston, a very well known Loyalist. Lucas Sr. was also
loyal but may not have qualified as a loyalist as he was not known to have fought in the Loyalist
militias. The younger Lucas however fought with Johnson’s Company of the King's Royal
Regiment of New York (KRRNY) (as did a Doran and a Shaver). This regiment was settled in
Matilda Township in the mid 1780s.

This History of William Feeter, A Soldier in the War of American Independence
and of His Father, Lucas Vetter, the ancestor of the Feeter-Feder-Feader-Fader families
IN THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA, with genealogy of the family compiled at the request of
JAMES D. FEETER, by John B. Koetteritz, MEMBER HERKIMER COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY.
Copyright by James D. Feeter, 1901
An extract from a presentation to the Herkimer Co. Historical Society, 1901 on the Vetter Family
“In 1767 a daughter, Anna, was born. Tradition says that the names of the next children were Philip, Elizabeth and
Christine. The youngest child was John Vetter, born in 1779, who became the ancestor of the Hainsville branch of
the family, now spelling the name Fader.
The elder Lucas, bound by many ties to the Johnson family and influenced by a Tory wife, followed the fortunes of
Sir John and removed in 1780 to Montreal, where he died about 1785. His son Lucas had grown up at Johnson Hall
as a favorite of the old baronet, and a playmate of the younger members of Sir William's household, and as soon as
hostilities began he enlisted in the Johnson Greens and fought on the side of the British during the whole of the
war. After the Revolution he settled on bounty lands near Matilda, Canada, which lands are still in possession of the

family. He died in 1842, leaving many descendants living in many parts of Canada and the United States,
respected and useful citizens of their respective communities. This branch of the family spells the name "Feader." “
