Elite event a family affair

Olympics athletics coach Bryan 

Lowson took up both coaching 

and running to support his son 

Jacob, in a sport all the family 

now embraces. 

Jacob, who is autistic, is 

competing at the Freemasons 

New Zealand Special Olympics 

National Summer Games in 

Hamilton starting today. About 

1300 athletes and coaches 

from throughout the country 

are competing in 10 sporting 

disciplines held at eight 

Hamilton venues. 

Along with her father, 

Jacob’s younger sister Taylor 

is also now a runner and for 

the past four years has been 

an assistant coach for the 

Canterbury athletics team. 

She is in her second year at 

Canterbury University and 

works at Ignition Health as a 

group instructor. Long term she 

wants to continue to work with 

athletes with disabilities. 

Running is now very much a 

family affair with Bryan, Taylor 

and Jacob recently completing 

the 22kms Port Hills Crater 

Rim Ultra trail event. 

Jacob, 21, has gone from 

strength to strength since first 

competing in athletics as a 

student at Papanui High School. 

He started by competing 

against other juniors, followed 

by Special Olympics, and now 

runs whenever he can. 

“Jacob needs someone to 

run with so as a family we are 

all very involved. I’m not the 

sort of coach who stands on 

the sidelines and yells. I like to 

get in there and run with the 

athletes,” Bryan Lowson said. 

The team trains every week 

at Burnside High School. 

While Bryan and Taylor are 

confident about many aspects 

of coaching, they enlisted the 

help of George Edwards – the 

long-time coach of William 

Stedman, who won a silver 

medal at the Tokyo Paralympics 

– to help with some of the 

technical aspects of the sport, 

such as starting from the 

blocks. 

The five-person Canterbury 

athletic team includes Jacob, 

Sam Goddard, Kevin Horne, 

April Gardner and Christian 

Murphy. 

Special Olympics New 

Zealand chief executive 

Carolyn Young said the 

National Summer Games, 

held every four years, are the 

pinnacle sports event for people 

with intellectual disabilities. 

The games has evolved to 

become one of the biggest 

sporting competitions in the 

country since the first national 

games were held in 1985. 

“The national games are our 

flagship event and while it was 

disappointing for our athletes, 

coaches and volunteers that we 

had to postpone the event last 

year because of the pandemic, 

the additional year has given 

everyone the opportunity to 

catch up on training, undertake 

more fundraising and planning, 

so we expect the games to be 

spectacular,” she said. 

“For many of the athletes, the 

National Summer Games is one 

of the highlights of their life, 

so we want to make sure they 

are well looked after and have a 

great experience.” 

The games will wrap up 

on Monday night with a closing 

ceremony and the disco before 

preparations start for the 

2025 National Summer Games 

in Christchurch. Mayor Phil 

Mauger will attend the closing 

ceremony.

Managing humans to walking dogs

STEPH WATSON works in 

human resource, managing new 

staff, organising reviews and 

other tasks that go with the role. 

But outside of her day job, she 

has a passion for things of the 

four-legged kind. 

It led to her setting up a pet 

sitting business in her spare 

time, which has taken off. 

“I thought I’d give pet sitting 

a go as a hobby in my free 

time,” Watson said. 

Watson created ChCh Pet 

Sitter in March, inspired by 

her friend and fellow dog lover 

who also owned a pet sitting 

business. 

“I was finding that I was 

spending my spare time (at 

home) doing almost pointless 

things like scrolling on my 

phone, and I just thought, why 

don’t I do something that can 

actually benefit people and 

that’s enjoyable?” Watson said. 

She started by helping out 

friends and gaining some 

exposure, but she was not 

getting many bites. 

“At the start, I was feeling 

a bit disheartened and gutted 

because I wasn’t getting many 

bookings and I was just about 

to stop trying,” Watson noted. 

“I think when I put in a lot 

more effort and really built 

it up to a community and 

brand and positive style, that’s 

when I started getting all the 

bookings.” 

Her first client was a border 

collie called Odin. 

“I was so nervous and excited 

for my first job, looking after 

Odin. I think he was too. It was 

like a first date.” 

She has looked after Odin 

twice and loved it when he 

smiled at her as she walked back 

in the door. 

“I’ve got a couple of repeat 

clients now and the relationship 

with the dog is really 

rewarding,” Watson said. 

Requests for pet sitting 

and dog walks soon started 

booming. 

Rather than turning people 

away, Watson hired a small 

team, which now includes three 

staff, and she is advertising for 

two more. 

“A lot of people wanted help 

with their pets. I have pet sitting 

contractors and I couldn’t do it 

without them,” Watson said. 

Her team all study at 

university and have more 

flexibility during the day while 

she works full-time. 

“It’s really humbling that I 

can provide young people low 

stress and enjoyable work while 

they potentially study or do 

their other jobs.” 

Watson said she was very 

keen on her day job and does 

not intend to take over ChCh 

Pet Sitter as a full-time gig. 

“If anything, what I would do 

is look to take on a couple more 

contractors,” she said. 

Fendalton resident Megan 

Taylor is one client who truly 

appreciates the service. She 

first came to ChCh Pet Sitter 

in September and has never 

looked back. 

Taylor never thought 

about having someone else 

in her home to look after her 

18-month-old labradoodle Ellie 

before she heard about Watson 

through a colleague. 

Her nerves went away after 

Watson came over for a meet 

and greet before she looked 

after Ellie who has severe 

anxiety. 

“After that meeting I felt quite 

good about her as a person,” 

Taylor said. 

“When we came home from 

holiday, Ellie was looking 

around, she didn’t care that 

we were home. That just sort 

of told me that Ellie loves her 

and (Watson’s) great with the 

communication so I never 

thought for a second that I’ve 

left (Ellie) with a stranger.” 

ChCh Pet Sitter offers one on

walks, house sitting, and drop 

ins once or twice a day to feed

Festive spirit shines through at market

MORE THAN 600 people 

have gathered to celebrate an 

early Christmas market night 

in Richmond, in spite of the 

gloomy weather. 

Avebury House manager 

Tanya Didham said the 

number of visitors attending 

the Christmas Night Market 

exceeded her expectations. 

“Given the circumstances, 

I was absolutely stoked. It 

was a great amount of people 

coming along all day and the 

music really kept things going 

on. 

“We almost called it because of 

the forecast, which was looking 

pretty hairy.” 

This year marked the fourth 

Christmas event at the grand 

Victorian mansion, which is 

classified as a category 2 historic 

place by Heritage New Zealand 

Pouhere Taonga. 

More than 40 stallholders were 

at the market, offering a wide 

range of homemade and locallycrafted 

products. 

Said Didham: “We have so 

many fabulous, creative people 

in our neighbourhood. We don’t 

charge a whole lot for the stall so 

they can come along and share 

what they have made through 

the year.” 

There were also live 

performances throughout the 

evening and a special activity 

called Santa Selfies, where 

children of all ages could take 

photos for free with Santa. 

Besides the annual Christmas 

market, the house is also home 

to various community groups 

and classes. 

It also holds multiple vintage 

markets throughout the year.

Trapper committed to saving wildlife 

EVERY TUESDAY you’ll find 

Quentin McDonald doing his 

weekly trap check in Cracroft 

Reserve, next to the Sign of the 

Takahe. 

A retired chemist, McDonald 

lives in nearby Hackthorne 

Rd and he’s been doing this 

volunteer work for the past four 

years, after his son’s scout den in 

Cashmere started getting “eaten 

alive” by rats gnawing through 

everything they could find, 

including books. 

After contacting Predator Free 

Port Hills and making a formal 

arrangement with city council 

rangers, he set up and started 

monitoring 11 traps placed 

around the reserve. 

“The scouts assembled those 

original wooden boxes and 

placed them as a map-reading 

exercise,” McDonald said. 

“I’ve caught 160 rats over four 

years and 80 of those were in the 

first year, 2019. They’ve nearly all 

been ship rats, which you can tell 

if you fold the tail over the body 

and the tail’s longer.” 

He uses American-made Victor 

traps and places them inside 

the wooden boxes. Catches are 

recorded on graphs that show 

rats are far and away the most 

common predator, along with 

a few mice, a very occasional 

hedgehog and one or two stoats. 

Using an ink card to track 

animal footprints is another way 

of monitoring the rat population 

in the reserve. 

It’s the winter months that see 

the biggest spike in catch numbers 

as there’s less natural food 

available, so they come in closer 

to where humans live. 

Perhaps due to his scientific 

background, McDonald enjoys 

recording the data and experiments 

with different types of 

food and trap placement. 

“They love the trees, it’s like a 

highway for them in here. They 

like drains and damp areas as 

well; I try and choose places that 

‘feel ratty.’ 

“I do move the traps but not 

very far because they don’t have 

a big range, it’s generally only 

around 50m.” 

Because rats are known to be 

or become shy of the boxes, at 

times he places ink cards nearby 

that creatures walk over, leaving 

their foot prints on the un-inked 

part of the card. 

“It’s another way of monitoring 

the population.” 

For bait McDonald has traditionally 

used walnuts and Nutella, 

as rats are thought to have 

a sweet tooth, but he’s currently 

trialling a ceramic bait to see if it 

is more attractive. 

McDonald is one of hundreds 

of people across Christchurch 

and Banks Peninsula who are 

helping to reduce the population 

of predators through backyard 

and community trapping. 

Their work is helping to protect 

our native bird species and 

our skinks, beetles and rare 

invertebrates.

than yourself,” said McDonald. 

“I do feel sad every time; 

they’re beautiful animals, they’re 

well adapted but they don’t 

belong in this environment and 

we brought them here so we’ve 

got to deal with it. There’s no joy 

– but there’s a certain satisfaction 

in knowing we’re going in the 

right direction.”

New book a window into surfing 

A COFFEE table book by surf 

photographer and writer Warren 

Hawke showcases New Brighton 

beach’s surfing community at its 

best. 

The 192-page NZ Surf Windows 

is the fourth in his series 

of hard cover coffee table books 

and may be Hawke’s last surfing 

photo book. 

The book has a feature on the 

east side of the city as well as a 

smattering of local surfers in the 

Window into the Past, People 

Who Surf and Logging chapters. 

The book would not be 

complete without New Brighton 

legend Ron Carter (below right) 

who has a prime spot in the Log 

Jam Gallery. 

Hawke surfed for 40 years and 

has been taking surf shots since 

1975. 

During his final year at 

teachers’ college he specialised 

in a related arts paper, learning 

photography and processing 

skills. 

Hawke had worked 

over the Christmas holidays to 

buy himself a cheap SLR camera 

and a 400mm lens. Since then, 

he’s had photos published in 

nearly every major surfing 

magazine in the world, as well 

as numerous books and surfing 

guides. 

Local features include South 

Shore Stories which covers 

the surfing experiences of Ian 

Ellingford, Lynton Douglas, 

Dave Poyner and John Foxton in 

the 1950s and 60s. 

There’s a piece by New 

Brighton identity Alan Coburn 

about a truck load of Midshore 

Boardriders’ trip to Gisborne 

for the NZ surfing champs in 

1966. 

There’s also a piece about 

Hawke meeting Peter Wilkes, 

the former president of Midshore 

Boardriders, on the New 

Brighton pier in 2021. 

Wilkes was a highly talented 

early surfing photographer and 

this spread includes a sample of 

his beautiful photos from the 

early 1960s. 

There are also spreads on local 

residents and surfers, Mikayla 

Dyer, Jess Galbraith, Katherine 

Edyvean and Yutaka Mizuno. 

Nineteen-year-old North Wai 

surfer Myka Black features with 

four crisp action photos in the

What is it about December that has 

all of us taking a deep breath and 

waiting for that beautiful time of 

year when we can finally rest, relax 

and look forward to the New Year. 

And what a year it's been. November was one 

of the busiest of months, it's a countdown 

month and everything is geared towards 

activity, momentum and that biggest of 

expectations, results. 

People want results – and good ones. There’s 

also a push to be either sold or settled into 

property before Christmas and contracts 

must be carefully worded to allow enough 

working days to accommodate this. 

But things are a little different because 

everything has changed. 

Change is a powerful determinant: it excites 

some and cripples others, and although you 

may wish it hasn’t occurred, like time itself, it’s 

hard to stop. 

Our market has adjusted to accommodate 

several new elements, and these are creating 

the changes I’m witnessing every day. 

The biggest change is that The Party is Over. 

The party being the market we experienced 

last year and up until February of this one. 

That incredible abandon with which people 

purchased new property for huge figures off 

the back of exceptionally low interest rates 

has gone. 

If, as an owner selling, you believe it hasn’t 

and your property will somehow escape this 

market realignment, then you will most likely 

be disappointed. 

I say ‘most likely’ because occasionally 

premiums occur and they do so especially in 

the auction rooms, but these properties are 

usually exceptional. Beautifully presented, 

in locations that are highly sought after and 

possessing an ‘X’ factor or a big potential gain. 

In this market you should be represented by 

a real estate professional deeply committed 

to your agenda whilst being brave enough 

to challenge any beliefs you have that aren’t 

helpful. 

These can include: the market hasn’t changed 

at all; there’s never any problem with a home 

that doesn’t have a cavity system; open 

homes don’t work; and I have to get ‘X’ 

dollars because I’m moving to Auckland and 

property values are higher than here. 

If this sounds familiar, it is, and it can take 

courage to try to address issues like these 

when emotion and money requirements 

collide. I happen to believe – having worked 

with thousands of owners – that all of us, 

myself included, want the best possible price 

for owners and our current market has got a 

lot still going for it. You just have to be realistic 

whilst maintaining a sense of optimism. 

So, what’s realistic? Prices, as I mentioned, 

have pegged back from last year, but not so 

much that all those gains achieved in 2020 

and 2021 have been eroded. 

Auctions are still working and delivering 

that most beautiful of components: an 

unconditional sale. With increasing numbers 

of offers either falling over or being 

renegotiated at the last minute, this is a 

critical point. 

I’ve already mentioned open homes, and I do 

so in the knowledge that consultants who 

say they aren’t needed or that only do one a 

week need to be put on notice. 

In this market, everything is needed. Extra 

open days, marketing that includes motivation 

because that draws attention, regular reviews 

and meetings with your chosen professional, 

patience and commitment. Be happy you 

reside in Christchurch and not Wellington or 

Auckland! 

There you have it, I’ve provided a current 

state of the market, your market and mine. 

Next year, who knows? Some of the written 

rhetoric says it could get more difficult, whilst 

others say the reverse. 

Time will tell. 

In the meantime, wherever you are here's 

to a peaceful Christmas break and may your 

2023 be kind to you and those you love.

THRIVING: The Avon Rowing Club has grown from having fewer than 20 active club rowers eight years ago to 

now having more than 140.

THE AVON Rowing Club is 

celebrating a grant of $40,000 

that will be used for coaching 

and administrative costs. 

The grant was given by the 

New Zealand Community 

Trust, one of the country’s 

largest gaming trusts, which 

frequently hands out grants to 

sporting clubs. 

Men’s captain of boats 

Will Johnston said NZCT’s 

support keeps the costs down 

for rowers and makes it more 

accessible to students and 

school-leavers. 

“With between 550-600 

active members, this support 

ensures the whole operation 

can run smoothly.” 

Director of community and 

club rowing Logan Keys said 

in eight years Avon has grown 

from having less than 20 

club rowers, excluding school 

students, to more than 

140. 

“This has been largely 

thanks to NZCT ensuring we 

can contract enough coaches 

and administration staff to 

safely supervise, organise and 

coach this growing number of 

athletes.” 

The club includes rowers 

from 10 secondary schools 

and Canterbury University. 

Male and female club 

members participate at all 

levels from under-15 and 

novice through to masters in 

both sculling and sweep oar 

events. 

The club also hosts rowers 

from overseas, corporate 

rowers, and university rowers. 

“Without the grant, we 

would have been unable 

to sustain our operations 

across the club, or to support 

the additional community 

programs we run outside our 

competitive squads,” Keys 

said. 

“We pride ourselves on our 

community outreach, which 

is somewhat unique in the 

rowing space, where clubs 

often focus solely on their 

competitive programmes.”

Healthy salads with a difference

Beetroot salad 

Serves 4-6 

Ingredients 

300gm young beetroot, peeled 

and shredded 

½ small red onion, thinly sliced 

1 red capsicum, seeded, diced 

1 apple, peeled, cored, shredded 

½ cup chopped parsley 

1 tsp toasted cumin seeds 

Grated orange rind and juice 

½ cup toasted walnuts, chopped 

Directions 

Place vegetables, apple, parsley, 

cumin seeds and orange rind in a 

large bowl. 

Drizzle with orange juice. 

Cover and refrigerate for at least 

60min. Garnish with walnuts. 

Great served with plain yoghurt. 

Potato gnocchi with 

roasted tomato sauce 

Serves 4 

Ingredients 

Roasted tomato sauce: 

1.5kg tomatoes, halved 

Shredded beetroot, 

onion, apples and 

capsicum make a 

delicious combination. 

4 each: garlic cloves, thyme 

sprigs 

1 sprig rosemary 

2 tbsp olive oil 

Flaky sea salt and freshly 

ground black pepper to taste 

Gnocchi: 

500g floury potatoes 

1 cup plain flour 

1 egg, lightly beaten 

1-2 tbsp olive oil 

Directions 

To make roasted tomato sauce, 

preheat oven to 180 deg C. Place 

all ingredients in a large roasting 

pan. Roast for about 45min or 

until tomatoes are soft and pulpy 

and starting to caramelise. Cool 

a little, then puree in a blender 

and pass through a sieve. Reheat 

when required. Makes about 

three cups. 

Meanwhile, prepare the gnocchi. 

Peel and chop potatoes. Boil 

in salted water, until soft. Drain 

well and mash. 

Beat flour and egg into potato 

in the saucepan. Mix until a soft 

dough forms. Add a little more 

flour if too soft. Knead until 

smooth and sticking together. 

This could take up to five minutes. 

Divide dough into four. Roll 

out on a lightly floured bench to

Cut into 2cm-long pieces. 

The tops can be indented with a 

fork. 

Bring a large saucepan of salted 

water to the boil. Gently poach 

gnocchi in batches until they rise 

to the surface. 

Drain and drizzle with a little 

olive oil to prevent sticking. Serve 

topped with roasted tomato 

sauce. 

Great finished with freshly 

ground black pepper, basil and 

parmesan. 

Capsicum, kumara and 

pesto salad 

Serves 2 

Ingredients 

250gm orange kumara, peeled 

and cut into 2cm cubes 

4 stalks asparagus 

2 yellow or red capsicums 

1 tbsp olive oil 

1 cup wild rocket, chopped 

3 tbsp basil pesto 

Flaky sea salt and freshly 

ground black pepper to taste 

1 medium tomato sliced 

1 tbsp finely grated parmesan 

cheese 

Directions 

Preheat oven to 200 deg C. 

Boil or steam kumara until 

just tender. Meanwhile, trim 

asparagus and cut into 2cm 

lengths. 

Add to kumara during the last 

two minutes of cooking. 

Halve peppers lengthwise. 

Remove ribs and seeds. Brush 

with olive oil. 

Place on a baking paper-lined 

tray and bake for two to three 

minutes until slightly softened. 

Combine kumara, asparagus 

and rocket with pesto and 

seasonings. Spoon into peppers. 

Top each with a slice of tomato. 

Bake for about 15min. 

Great garnished with small 

rocket or basil leaves.

Santa’s Brekkie Pancakes 

with fresh berries 

This one is not just for the kids – the sweetness of the bananas makes these 

pancakes scrumptious and a delicious, healthy breakfast hit for everyone! 

You will need: 

• 4-5 bananas (soft enough to mash) 

• 4 eggs 

• ½ cup rice flour 

• 2 tbsp whole linseed 

• ½ tsp salt 

• grated lemon rind 

• juice from 1 lemon 

• splash of vanilla 

• butter to cook the pancakes 

Method: 

1. Peel and mash the bananas in a bowl. 

2. Stir in the eggs, vanilla, linseed, salt 

and lemon ingredients. 

3. Add flour and mix to a smooth batter. 

4. Cook pancakes in frypan on one side 

until they bubble on the surface or hold 

together enough to be flipped over. 

5. If the mixture is thick, flatten the 

pancakes out once they’ve been turned 

over. Each pancake should be around 

1cm thick. 

Kid’s version: 

Decorate each pancake with red berries 

for Santa’s hat, Greek yoghurt or 

whipped cream for Santa’s beard and 

chocolate buttons or grape halves for 

Santa’s eyes. 

Adult’s version: 

Serve with a mix of fresh strawberries, 

blueberries, raspberries, and 

boysenberries. Top off with Greek 

yoghurt.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas 

Christmas is a great time for passing down recipes that are tried and true becoming 

traditional family favourites. The owner of this recipe says her mum used to make 

the pudding on Christmas Eve and would take the bowl and wooden spoon around 

everyone in the house to stir the mixture and make a wish. 

Make a Wish Christmas Pudding 


• 1 ½ tbsp butter 

• 1 ½ tsp baking soda 

• 1 ½ cups of boiling water 

• 1 ½ cups flour 

• 1 ½ cups mixed fruit or sultanas 

• ¾ cup sugar 

Method: 

1. In a glass or stainless steel bowl, 

melt the butter (over hot water) 

and dissolve the baking soda. 

2. Add the boiling water and 

sugar. 

3. When cool, add flour and 

mixed fruit. 

4. Stir all the ingredients together 

and make a Christmas wish. 

5. Cover bowl with a tea towel and 

allow to stand overnight. 

The next day: 

• Place mixture into a greased 

bowl or ice-cream container, 

cover with tinfoil and place in a 

pot of water, just deep enough 

so the bowl doesn’t float. 

• Boil pudding for four hours and 

check regularly to make sure 

the water has boiled dry. Top 

up carefully with extra water if 

required. 

• Serve with heaps of Chantilly 

cream!

Put cream, vanilla essence 

and icing sugar in a bowl and 

whisk until light and fluffy with
