Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,
maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent
dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on
what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked
about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served
us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land.
The place: The Kulkowitz family’s — same family behind the Mad
Batter — newest venture, The Cricket Club, which resides in the building
that previously housed the Merion Inn. They opened this fall and
they’re making quite an impression with the variety of dishes, creative
cocktails and total reintroduction of the restaurant on Decatur Street.
The vibe: EZ creative marketing/programming/wearer of all hats
Courtney Rosenberg and her gang had a 6pm reservation. It was great
planning on their part — this particular Friday night was the tree lighting
in Cape May and hustle and bustle through town was reflected in
the restaurant. They enjoyed live music from Andy & Brian and the
staff was warm and welcoming the entire night. Kyle Kulkowitz — the
man in charge and an old friend of Courtney — stopped by the table
often to check in on things and chat about the experience... and there
was a lot of good things to say!
The drinks: Matt Reeves runs the bar program at The Cricket Club
and it would have been practically illegal not to try a variety of his creative
cocktails. Courtney and all enjoyed the Station 51, the Vieux Carre
and the Pomegranate Lemon Drop. Classic cocktails were also in the
mix including a couple extra dirty Kettle One martinis and glasses of
prosecco. They’ve got plenty to sip on behind that bar!
The food: There were A LOT of dishes for the table so everyone
could get a taste of the new menu. These tasty choices included grilled
octopus, fried tomatoes, spicy tuna roll, loaded potato muffins, chicken
and waffles, white bean hummus and lamb ribs. That was just the
start... also munched on a duck special offered that evening, shrimp
and cauliflower grits, Cape May scallops and the sword fish. Safe to say
everyone arrived hungry and parched, and not a soul left unsatisfied.
The takeaway: The Cricket Club has so many offerings to try, it’s
lucky for us, and the rest of Cape May, that they’re open year-round
allowing for plenty of opportunities. Book a table through Resy Fri-Tue
from 5-9pm. And make sure you arrive hungry.

Undertow
Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
Fired down a bottle of that
Pennsylvania Dutch spiked eggnog
about 30 minutes ago, so this column
will take longer to write than it does
to read. I played a brief gig at Cold
Spring Brewery last Saturday with Sugar Dave
Hughes. It was the same day America lost
3-1 in the World Cup so a pall hung over the
proceedings and sadness permeated the air as
grown men wept in the corner and... okay I’m
kidding, nobody cares about soccer.
Anyway, as Michael Scott would say,
“How the turntables…” as I am now reliant
upon the kindness of strangers to book
gigs and am no longer the Gig Warlord of
Exit Zero Hospitality holding time slots above
the heads of other musicians like a sword
of Damocles (this is a VERY Pennsylvania
Dutch spiked eggnog-inspired sentence).
Regardless, it was a proper gig full of melodic
tunes and visited by Top Three Terry O’Brien
Groupies, Alex & Lynn Sosik (man, they’re
going to give me an earful over that…). It was
nice to not be on a “pitch count” for drinks
(I was only allowed two per gig at Exit Zero,
which was probably just about right) so I was
able to splurge and have three (THREE!) beers
at Cold Spring Brewery (I dialed in on their
Blonde IPA as I’m not into super-hoppy beers,
but everyone seemed to be enjoying all their
various brews… and no lie, this paragraph
took 30 minutes to write and it’s not even finished
yet). The room sounds great thanks to
Andrew the sound guy and we hope to be back
there early and often. Emphasis on early. It
was lovely to be home from a gig at 5pm. Also,
a little birdie tells me Cold Spring Brewery is
taking over the Cold Spring Village restaurant
next month, so keep your eyes peeled. Thank
you, Cold Spring Brewery, for having us. Let’s
do it again, eh?
Yes, I Washed My Hands of the Week:
To Alex Sosik. (Just so you know, about 90
percent of what you read on social media was
produced on the toilet.)
Speaking of gigs, I’ve picked up a couple
more in free agency. On December 25 I’ll be
in the Brown Room with the inimitable Ray
Palmer, the only other loser I could find with
no plans on Christmas night. We’ll be playing
from 7pm-11pm. He’ll be tickling the ivories
while I knock you upside the head with some
(Christmas) spirited vocals. Ray helped me
knock it out of the park at my November gig
up in Nottingham, PA for my old high school.
(Cue up the Steely Dan.) Come to think of it,
Alex and Lynn Sosik came to that gig, too, 100
miles away. It occurs to me I should make less
fun of the people who come out to support me
no matter how many of my jokes don’t land.
I’ll be back in the Brown Room on New
Year’s Eve-Eve (December 30,
if you’re bad with calendars)
with Jerry Kolber, Goose to my
Maverick, because I clearly look
much more like Tom Cruise than
he does. I’m finishing up my first
year with Jerry, the sole survivor
of the four partners I began the
year with, like Squid Game if I was
the squid and had any idea what
that show was about because I
never watched it but this analogy
seems apt based on what I’ve
gleaned from the internet. I’ll
gush more in my end-of-the-year
column, but Jerry is a top-flight
musical partner and even better
dude. My part-time female vocalist
could learn a lot from him.
After that, my next open-tothe-public
gig isn’t until February
4 at Mudhen in Wildwood. I’m
telling you now because Exit Zero
goes on hiatus after December 29
and returns February 9.
My homies at WCFA 101.5
outdid themselves this week
for the Terry O’Brien Delivery
Block. At the stroke of 7am I was
slapped in the face in the best way
possible with REM’s “Wolves,
Lower,” an all-time alternative
banger that no one’s ever heard.
A few hours later it was “Tongue
Like a Knife” from Squeeze’s sublime
Play album. I’m telling you,
line up Play on your YouTube or
Spotify or whatever you have and
settle in for an hour of incredible
music. Warning: You WILL
get horny. But more than that, I
was stunned and amazed by the
volume and quality of incredible
New Wave-era Christmas songs
that filled the remaining three
hours and 50 minutes. I couldn’t
name two of them if you put a
gun to my head, but they were
uniformly awesome.
As I dropped off magazines
at the MVC in North Cape May
Thursday morning, I was met not
with the usual stern-faced security
guards keeping the building
safe from people who haven’t
memorized their VINs, but rather
with the smiling visage of Eddie
Castegnetta. And really, aside
from my wife waking me up with
a smooch and an “I love you”,
there are very few other ways I’d
rather greet a Thursday morning.
(Eddie hosts a fantastic oldies
show on WCFA and is just as nice
in-person as he sounds on the
radio. Mary Ann is a lucky lady.)
Cape Harbor Shell’s restroom
was spotless, as usual, around
8am Thursday morning, but the
door is getting a little sticky, I
really had to pull to shut it. Let’s
work on that for next week, shall
we? (Also, Andrew Fiocca, I call
lots of people “big fella” when I
can’t think of anything clever to
say. You look fantastic.)
Dallas Cowboys LB (short for
linebacker for all you non-sports
nerds) Micah Parsons recently
expressed a normal, unvarnished
thought on Twitter, for which
he was excoriated by the Woke
Mob for not exercising perfect
GroupThink. As an American,
this troubles me greatly. As an
Eagles fan, I say DRAG HIM!
Thanks to the wonders of
technology, I was able to audition
for and be rejected by The Voice
within minutes instead of driving
two hours to Philly, waiting in a
room for six hours, THEN being
rejected by The Voice followed by
the drive home. It’s tough being
an unrecognized vocal genius.
Employee Christmas Party of
the Week: We’re meeting at self
checkout aisle 7 at the Acme on
Christmas Eve at 9. Can’t wait to
see who my Secret Santa is.
I watched Amsterdam on HBO.
I’m still trying to figure out if it
was any good, but, being a David
O. Russell film, it was never boring.
Denzel Washington’s son is
really growing on me. (He and
Robert Pattinson were a great
onscreen duo in the otherwise
indecipherable TENET.)
That’s all for this week. Next
week I’ll down half a bottle of Jack
Daniels before I write and, while
the column may not be much better,
at least I won’t remember it.
’Til next week, don’t get
caught in The Undertow.

Bird Droppings
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
Yes, gulls are an acquired taste, and
some birders go their entire careers
without giving them serious regard.
Other birders, Lauraphiles, can’t get
enough of them.
Me? I fall somewhere in between.
Enjoying the gulls I see as elements that
enliven the winter beach. Whether some
mud-colored miscreant is an American or
European Herring Gull or Yellow-legged Gull,
a white-headed gull only recently split from
European Herring Gull, really doesn’t interest
me. The Herring Gull complex and differentiation
of species and subspecies is going to
tie up taxonomists until the end of time and
frankly I don’t have that much time or interest.
Just telling Herring Gulls from Lesser
Black-backed from Great Black-backed is
challenging for me. These are the common
large-gull species that enliven Cape May
beaches in winter, chowing down on dead fish,
storm-deposited shellfish, and anything it can
wrestle down its throat — they’re opportunistic
and adept at foraging on land or sea.
Herring gulls, either the chocolate-bodied
juveniles or silver-backed adults predominate.
Transitional stages sow a mix of traits
and are usually messy looking. If you see one
and care to just look the other way, no harm
done. But since gulls are social creatures, you
can use size to help sort out the ranks. Largest
is Great Black-backed. Their call is hoarse,
gruff. Herring Gull is slightly smaller and
has the classic, keening gull cry. Adults have
pinkish legs. Adult Lesser-Backed Gulls have
backs almost as dark as adult Great Blackbacked
and yellow legs. Simple, no?
Most of these winter gulls breed north
of here, some in the Arctic. One wild card
is Ring-billed Gull, a trim, quick-stepping
gull that resembles a miniature adult Herring
Gull, but a Herring Gull with yellow, not pink,
legs and a black ring encircling the tip of the
bill. Its call is squealing and it is the gull most
often seen patrolling shopping center parking
lots. Breeding along the Great Lakes, they
make our coasts their winter retreat.
Laughing Gull? Our common summer
gull heads for the southeastern and gulf
coasts. A few may hang around the ferry terminal
in winter, but Cape Charles is typically
their northernmost outpost.
Why this discussion of gulls, at all?
Because with winter closing in, gulls constitute
the best game in town if you want to
sharpen your birding skills. Dress warm and
concentrate your search — your reward will
be an exhilarating day on a winter beach.
As the year comes to an end, we spend
time on a few of life’s important
reflections. How much did I accomplish
this year? What struggles did I
manage to overcome? Who’s going
to get an Oscar? Okay, that last question is not
like the others, but it doesn’t make it lesser!
The Oscars will be March 12, 2023.
BuzzFeed is an online click-bait universe
where you can certainly spend time you probably
don’t have searching various lifestyle and
pop-culture stories. But hey, they came up
with a kick-ass list of 50 likely Oscar hopefuls
that you can stream right now.
You could visit buzzfeed.com and search
Oscar buzz — but that will get you dozens of
crazy articles that you’ll spend hours clicking
through before you get their list. My favorite
of these articles: “17 Offensive Movies that
These Actors Should’ve Stayed Away from
with a Ten-Foot Pole.” Yeah, I’m pretty sure
they disregarded title-capitalization rules in
the way they posted that click bait, but I’ve
corrected it for them here.
The Movie Column
By arts columnist Tom Sims
After reading their list, I’m surprised at
how few of the movies I’ve seen. There were
a few I did, and those articles appeared here.
There was Nope from Jordan Peele and Dr.
Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, which are
both getting some noteworthy praise. And
despite what quasi-critics ( you’re not really a
critic just because you blab on about movies)
might say about Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,
it’s likely to get Oscar nods as well.
Lightyear is getting some play, but I’m
not sure I officially reviewed it here. It was
excellent fun but fell a little short of my usual
gushing about most things Toy Story related.
Then there were the movies I didn’t want to
see. Somebody else will need to review Top
Gun: Maverick here. I know… I know… quasi-critics
might say “it rocks!” but did we need
another installment of machismo?
Here’s the films on my watch list. The
Batman — many rave about it. The Woman
King stars Viola Davis, and she always gets
my attention. As gut wrenching as it may
be, Till (the tragic story of Emmett Till) and
actor Danielle Deadwyler are in the running.
Lastly, two auto-bio pics, The Fabelmans from
Spielberg and James Gray’s Armeggedon Time
may get nods. On the animation side, there’s
Pixar’s Turning Red and DreamWorks The Bad
Guys that caught Oscar’s eye (and mine). So
many movies, so little time! Let me know
what you’re watching at flixyoumissed@
gmail.com. Thoughtful quasi-critic musings
encouraged.
The Activity Column
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, take a walk in the winter air!
Your couch is cozy, but Florence
Nightingale wants you to go outside.
You probably learned about Florence
Nightingale in a book that described
the “Lady with the Lamp”’ moving
through tents full of injured soldiers, providing
comfort. You may not have learned
of her skill as a statistician. The American
Statistical Association calls her the “Lady
with the Data” and asserts that she is one of
the most important statisticians in history.
In Nightingale’s time, before germ theory was
accepted by the medical community, hospitals
were dirty and crowded. Statistics helped
Nightingale to demonstrate that the death
rate of injured soldiers fell from 40 percent to
2 percent after she, Mary Seacole and other
nurses insisted on fresh air and daylight in
British war hospitals during the Crimean War.
Nightingale also demonstrated the value
of fresh air in the wider community. Her
innovative “coxcomb” chart — a more complicated
form of pie chart — showed the value
of ventilation in preventing illness and led
to England’s 1878 Open Spaces Act, which
“mandated the creation of playgrounds, parks,
recreation grounds and public gardens.” In a
letter from 1860, she recommended “open air
during the greater part of the day” and “bedroom
ventilation at night” for better health.
Cape May’s open spaces are perfect for
a winter walk, both on the beach and in the
town. In addition to the fresh air, winter walking
boosts your mood and helps to prevent
seasonal affective disorder. There won’t be
any bugs on the trails of the Garrett Family
Preserve or the Cape May Meadows, or any
crowds as you stroll the beach. Shell hunters
tend to find more treasure in the winter, too
— less competition and winter storms churn
things up. Your pictures may also turn out
better in winter — fewer people in the background,
and, if you’re lucky, the magical light
of a fresh snowfall.
Dress in layers, cover your extremities,
keep your feet dry, and consider a mask to
warm the air you breathe, especially if you’re
asthmatic. Wear sunscreen, sunglasses and
moisturizer, especially on your lips. If you’ve
been sedentary, pace yourself with the talk
test — exert yourself so that you can still talk,
but too out of breath to sing. If you’re reluctant,
set a timer and walk for only six minutes
— that’s enough to get your blood stirring.
Make your outing fun by flying a kite, building
a sandcastle, or playing your favorite beach
game. Or, emulate the lady with the lamp by
taking a flashlight on an evening stroll.
The Answer Lady invites inquiries from
gentle readers on all manner of relationship
quandaries, matters of the
heart and ethics. If you’d like to send
a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or,
simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate
the wisdom herein.
Dear Answer Lady
My husband and I bought a home in West
Cape May when our three boys were little.
Once they were in college, we rented it to them
in the summer but use it ourselves in the off
season. Now that the kids are adults, we lend
it to them for the week between Christmas and
New Year. When they were single it was fine.
However, now that they all have wives or exwives
and children, there’s a lot of angst about
sharing the house. This year, they asked us to
mediate. I was ready to do so, but my husband
says it is a no win and “not worth the fallout.”
What do you think? It seems wrong not to try
and resolve it. — Troubled Mother
Dear Troubled
The Answer Lady agrees with your
The Answer Lady
Wise answers to perplexing questions
husband. Why should your generosity be
tested? If you want to weigh in, tell them if they
can’t sort this out on their own, perhaps it is
time for you to rent the house to someone else
and they all go their separate ways. Or suggest
that any one of them is free to rent the house
themselves. In the meantime, treat yourselves
to a lovely bottle of wine from Sunset Liquors
and prime rib roast from West Side Market and
leave the sibling rivalry to the siblings.
Dear Answer Lady
My neighbor invited my wife and I over for
cocktails and to use their new hot tub. When
we arrived, he and his wife were already in the
tub. He got out to serve us cocktails – naked.
My wife could barely take the cocktail from
him. I presume his wife was naked as well —
we never turned to look. He invited us to go in.
The backyard looked like something out of a
Hallmark movie. Twinkle lights everywhere.
Romantic music playing. My wife and I
couldn’t figure out how to get out of there fast
enough. Clever girl that my wife is, she dialed
my number. I faked an emergency and said,
“Another time, sorry.” That was two weeks
ago. How do we deal now? — Not Naked, But
Afraid
Dear Afraid
You pretend nothing happened. In their
world — nothing did happen, much to their
dismay. After two more excuses as to why
you cannot come over, they will get the hint.
Meanwhile, expunge that visual by having a
romantic dinner at The Lookout or Primal.
Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 609-465-8923
JOJO is an active boy who came to the shelter
when his owners could no longer care for him.
He knows many behavior cues and his leash
skills are improving daily. Jojo loves to run
around the yard and go on walks. He is housetrained
and would be best in a home with
older children and no other pets — he loves to
have all your attention.
LADY is a sweet two-year-old girl who came
to the shelter when her owner was no longer
able to care for her. She is eager to learn proper
behavior cues and loves to be with people. Her
leash skills are improving every day and she is
very treat-motivated. Lady would be best in a
home with older children and with no other
pets at this stage.
CRANBERRY came to the shelter as a stray,
but she is full of life! She enjoys being around
people and going for long walks with her
human — her leash skills are excellent. Cranberry
is still in the early stages of training and
needs a home that will work on her puppy
manners. She’ll thrive as the only pet and with
older children.
MEATBALL is a distinguished senior citizen
who came to the shelter after 14 years in her
home. Her owner fell ill, and it was decided
that it was best to find Meatball a new home.
She has a very sweet nature and in in very
good health. Meatball would be good in a
home with other cats, dogs and children and
she is up to date on all vaccinations.
FURNANDO is an eight-year-old boy who
was a stray in Wildwood before coming to
the shelter. He is an independent cat and will
make a very loyal pet. Furnando would be
good in a home with children but prefers a
home without other cats. He is up to date on
all vaccinations and neutered. If interested in
adopting this sweet boy, contact the shelter.
THE GOMEZ KITTENS are a trio of captivating
923 FARMDALE DRIVE, WEST CAPE MAY
Very bright and impeccably maintained, this four bed, three bath home in West
Cape May is what you’ve been waiting for! Located in a small circle
development off of Broadway with no through traffic. This is the best of both
worlds, providing a private and quiet setting, but minutes from the town and
beaches.
This home has an open concept floor plan with the kitchen, dining area
and great room flowing nicely together, perfect for entertaining. Off the great
room is a bright and sunny all-seasons room that was added in 2018 expanding
the living space. The all-seasons room leads out to the maintenance free deck
which was also done in 2018.
There is a first floor ensuite master bedroom as well as two additional
bedrooms and a hall bath. The second floor has a sitting area, large bedroom
and an additional bathroom. This home has an oversized outside shower with a
dressing area, perfect for washing off after a long day at the beach.
Rounding out the package there is a two car garage with a spacious attic
above. The height in the attic is potentially adequate to add an additional room
without changing the roof line, allowing for further expansion. Roof and skylights
(2) were new in 2018. This is an exceptional value for your dollar and it
won’t last long! Call for your appointment today!
