Page 12 EXIT ZERO December 15, 2022
Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,
maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent
dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on
what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked
about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served
us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land.
The place: The Kulkowitz family’s — same family behind the Mad
Batter — newest venture, The Cricket Club, which resides in the building
that previously housed the Merion Inn. They opened this fall and
they’re making quite an impression with the variety of dishes, creative
cocktails and total reintroduction of the restaurant on Decatur Street.
The vibe: EZ creative marketing/programming/wearer of all hats
Courtney Rosenberg and her gang had a 6pm reservation. It was great
planning on their part — this particular Friday night was the tree lighting
in Cape May and hustle and bustle through town was reflected in
the restaurant. They enjoyed live music from Andy & Brian and the
staff was warm and welcoming the entire night. Kyle Kulkowitz — the
man in charge and an old friend of Courtney — stopped by the table
often to check in on things and chat about the experience... and there
was a lot of good things to say!
The drinks: Matt Reeves runs the bar program at The Cricket Club
and it would have been practically illegal not to try a variety of his creative
cocktails. Courtney and all enjoyed the Station 51, the Vieux Carre
and the Pomegranate Lemon Drop. Classic cocktails were also in the
mix including a couple extra dirty Kettle One martinis and glasses of
prosecco. They’ve got plenty to sip on behind that bar!
The food: There were A LOT of dishes for the table so everyone
could get a taste of the new menu. These tasty choices included grilled
octopus, fried tomatoes, spicy tuna roll, loaded potato muffins, chicken
and waffles, white bean hummus and lamb ribs. That was just the
start... also munched on a duck special offered that evening, shrimp
and cauliflower grits, Cape May scallops and the sword fish. Safe to say
everyone arrived hungry and parched, and not a soul left unsatisfied.
The takeaway: The Cricket Club has so many offerings to try, it’s
lucky for us, and the rest of Cape May, that they’re open year-round
allowing for plenty of opportunities. Book a table through Resy Fri-Tue
from 5-9pm. And make sure you arrive hungry.
