"Can Achieve Maximum Potential"
c.a.m.p. university
N O V E M B E R 2 0 2 2
ISSUE XXII
C.A.M.P. University provides opportunities for adults with special needs to
continue developing interests as well as life, social, and job skills so that they
Can Achieve their Maximum Potential. C.A.M.P. University also provides
respite and support for their families.
From the Board
Celia Thrash
C.A.M.P. Board Chairwoman (Incoming January 2023)
Tell me why can't a special needs graduate from high school not be able to flourish and
grow in our community? Without an alternative, many of these young adults end up staying
in nursing homes or sitting at home watching TV eight hours a day. Families become broken
because of the stress. Many parents are forced to give up jobs in order to stay home and
care for their loved one. It is a difficult situation. Fortunately, C.A.M.P. University was
founded especially to answer that need, and answer it, it did!
Since 2007, C.A.M.P. has, little by little, grown and established itself as a serious alternative
for those special needs graduates. We have a terrific building, renovated to help assist and
engage our "CAMPers." Since most of them learn differently, or lack skills to adapt to life's
challenges, our inventive staff involves them in special programs, activities, and studies so
they can flourish. For instance, CAMPers just worked on a play, "Beauty and the Beast, Jr."
Remember the book, "It Takes a Village?" It never rang so true as with C.A.M.P. University.
We are the village. With very small scale public funding, and relying chiefly on the
generosity of the community, C.A.M.P. can always use a helping hand--whatever that may
be. Whether you have the ability to volunteer or donate, help us help them thrive and grow.

Highlights
C.A.M.P. University celebrates so many
moments of joy and blessing from 2022.
The teachers continue to enliven the
curriculum presented to CAMPers and we
have been able to sprinkle in field trips,
"like Old C.A.M.P." Pictured on the left is
our first outing in 2+ years.
Spring + Summer 2022
Students
enjoyed IMAS' offerings of tactile
materials and a make-your-own-alienspaceship
craft. We're continuing to
ramp up our computer lab to enhance
hands-on learning with appropriate
software. The Spring and Summer
months also saw an abundance of
volunteers referred and sponsored by the
Valley Baptist Missions Education Center,
through their Director, and C.A.M.P.
advocate, Eli Lara. We honor and thank
Johnson Ferry Baptist Church, First
Baptist Church Georgetown and
Westbury Baptist Church for serving us
with both labor and in quality time with
our CAMPers. Kike is featured directly
below working on kindness rocks. First
United Methodist Church, under the
supervision of Pastor Laura, Director of
Children's and Discipleship Ministries,
Lee Ann Clemons, and CAMPer mom,
03
Donna Gibson, helped Kike and the whole class during Kingdom Camp. Looking
ahead, Special Olympics South Texas (SOTX) has opened up in-person play and
therefore we're practicing Bocce & Bowling for Fall meets. The season also speeds up
with a cluster of events including our annual Talent Show, a play date C.A.M.P. is
hosting for Capable Kids, and our #GivingTuesday2022 outreaches that will include
hosting a canned food drive plus other service projects within our means.
ISSUE XXII
if you can't take the heat...
We have been headed toward (and achieving) a long-term goal of
more life skill independence, including kitchen skills, for our students.
In the past year, through both #GivingTuesday and 'A Night at the
Races,' our loyal supporters have helped fundraise for getting C.A.M.P.'s
kitchen safe, properly equipped with a stove, and ready for action.
Here's a little "foretaste" of the continued cooking we are teaching our
CAMPers!

Nayla Gonzalez is a new staff
Teacher Aide. She joins
C.A.M.P. with both experience
as a UTRGV Intern in
Rehabilitative Services and
with student teaching
experience in local PK- 12
schools including special
education units. Nayla says
she "loves the sense of
community that is built
among the CAMPers," and
that, "being able to witness
and be a part of their
interactions makes me very
happy, especially when I am
seeing them bond with one
another and build long term
friendships." We heartily
welcome Nayla!

The thanks and praise belongs to everyone who shared in our big night! There were 269 auction items donated--
many bundled into sumptuous packages--given by more than 180 donors. One hundred and eight very active
bidders placed 814 bids for a friendly, but anonymous, competition. In addition to these, our 100 raffle entries for
the annual Rolex Drawing were quickly sold out. Speaking of competitions, congratulations again to our Hat
Contest Winners: Cody Oates for the gentlemen and Marivel Avalos for the ladies, and also, to the Rolex Drawing
Winner, Erick Moreno. It was fun to see what the most bid-on items were this year: (1) an Aquamarine Women's
Ring, (2) Bob Stark's Steak Box, (3) a Gabriel Salazar Original Painting, and (4) a Leather Accent Chair. Super Silent
Auction Items that fetched the highest dollar amounts included: the Texas Regional Bank Shrimp Boil & River Rock
Band (Concert), Taste of Texas for 10 hosted at The Patio on Guerra, Rio Bank Fajita Roulade Dinner for 30, the
Gabriel Salazar Original Painting, and the Nilgai Hunt (furnished by Ford & Abbie Sasser on El Sueno Ranch.)
Congratulations all around to the givers and winners. C.A.M.P. University's success is truly your success!

BEAUTY IN MOTION
For our annual talent show this year we replaced individual routines with a group
performance of a classic fairy tale story. We offered parents limited tickets for guests.
More than 100 attended, and many applauded and teared-up as our CAMPers--even
the non-verbal students--participated in delivering a solid performance.. Our staff
and CAMPers put in hundreds of combined practice and set-design hours. Thanks to
Whataburger's generosity, all attendees happily walked away with a song in their
heart and a "Be Our Guest" pass to a hamburger repast. Congratulations on all the
hard work and productive results!
