Communities Prepare
Whether residents need shelter from intense heat, or emergency
personnel need to communicate during disasters,
communities must prepare to cope with extreme events like
wildfires and floods. Ten projects are helping to ensure that
locations within the Columbia Basin are well equipped to do so,
with support from Columbia Basin Trust.
“Basin residents have emphasized the need for their communities
to become more climate resilient,” said Will Nixon, Senior
Manager, Delivery of Benefits, Columbia Basin Trust. “We’re
supporting these communities to be better prepared for events
like wildfire or extreme weather. These projects will provide
more resources so we can all face the future more confidently.”
In addition to the 13 projects supported in fall 2021, the Trust
is providing nearly $2 million to help communities strengthen
their emergency operations centres and create emergency
gathering spaces for residents, with access to necessities like
power, filtered air, air conditioning, emergency equipment and
emergency supplies.
To view the projects, go to www.tinyurl.com/5n8m5dm4
Here are a few examples:
Nakusp
The auditorium in the Nakusp and District Sports Complex
can accommodate up to 600 people during emergency events.
To serve them even better, the Village of Nakusp is installing a
heating, ventilation and air conditioning system in the building,
plus purchasing a backup generator.
“This project will enhance the resiliency of all communities in
the Upper Arrow Lakes area, which are at risk from the impacts
of climate change,” said Noel Ballard, FireSmart/Emergency
Program Coordinator. “It will provide a greater sense of security
to members of these communities since they’ll know that
there will be a safe place of refuge for them if they require one.”
Ymir
Built in the 1950s, the Ymir Community Hall is undergoing
Home Goods Furniture will be
Closed December 25 and 26
to allow our staff some rest and
family time this Christmas.
several enhancements to ensure it can aid the public in emergencies
like forest fires, severe weather and floods. The Ymir
Community Association is improving lighting and accessibility
and adding a backup generator, WiFi and a heating, ventilation
and air conditioning system.
“With these much-needed upgrades to our community hall,
we will be able to provide a safe and dependable space for the
people of Ymir,” said Tamara Rushforth, Treasurer. “This main
building of Ymir is greatly needed for emergencies of any kind,
elections and celebrations. It is very important for all the residents
that they have a place to go in case of any situation.”
The Trust integrates climate resilience throughout its work.
For example, it offers an overarching program to help communities
prepare for, respond to and adapt to challenges associated
with the changing environment, plus more targeted programs
like ones to reduce the risk of wildfires or do energy retrofits on
community-purpose buildings. Learn more at www.ourtrust.
Coldest Night of the Year
With the holiday season fast approaching we will be spending
time with our family, friends, and co-workers, this is the
perfect time to start your Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY)
fundraising team.
Nelson CARES Society is thrilled to be hosting the 9th
annual Coldest Night of the Year on Saturday, Feb 25th. This
family-friendly walk raises funds for the Ready for Home program
which operates out of Ward Street Place and helps residents
remain housed and navigate the myriad of social support
resources required to achieve a quality of life.
This year the event will be returning to an in-person event.
The community will gather at Central (Wildflower) school
for either a 2km or 5km walk around town to finish at St. Joe’s
Gym for a warm bowl of chili. With this return to an in-person
event, there will be numerous volunteer positions from event
site setup, teardown, food service, and route safety marshals.
Nelson CARES invites you to create
a CNOY team with your friends, family,
co-workers, book clubs, gy- goers,
choir, or classmates. It is a great way
to gather for the good, raise some
funds and support the community.
Tens of thousands of Canadians
will take to the streets for CNOY
with events taking place in 150 cities,
towns, and communities across
the country. By walking together in
the chill of the night, participants
will better understand the experience
of being on the streets during a cold
Canadian winter, while raising funds
to aid the work of Nelson CARES and
the Ready for Home program in providing
much-needed support.
The funds raised here stay in this
community to support our most vulnerable
citizens. Nelson always shines
bright, and we smash our fundraising
St. Saviour’s Fundraising
The holiday season is truly upon us but
sometimes the money doesn’t make it to the
end of the month, especially this month. For
over two decades the St. Saviour’s Food Pantry
has been there to help folks in need
A 2023 calendar has been created as a fundraising
initiative for the Food Pantry and is
available around town and from St. Saviour’s
at 701 Ward Street. Nora Nitz, Food Pantry
Manager shares “We would like to thank the
artists whose work brings this calendar to
life, as well as Hall Printing for their expertise.
We are 100% volunteer run and couldn’t
operate without their gift of time. Our clients
who always enrich our lives and our many
benefactors make this all possible. Served
with respect and dignity, every client is able
to choose what they put in their own bags and
then sit for a while with a coffee and baked
treat. Conversations, laughter and a sense of
community fill the room. We’ve hosted parties
and wakes, celebrations of all sorts in our
space. Thank you.
In 2000 the Food Pantry opened its doors
to the public for the first time, working out of
an office closet, and without any advertising
eight people came that day. Over the years so
many more have come into the space, no longer
a closet, to access food, have a coffee and
chat with friends and neighbours
The calendars will be available
Pantry. If you would like to
make a cash donation to St.
Saviour’s Pro-Cathedral to
support the Food Pantry (put
‘Food Pantry’ in the memo
line of the cheque) or donate
right now, the completion date and possession of the new homes
for Habitat partner families looks to be near the end of March
2023 “We still need support from individuals and companies to
help us build these much-needed homes for deserving Habitat
for Humanity partner families,” says Neil Coburn Board Chair
for Habitat Southeast BC. “The momentum is just getting started
as we will soon welcome teams of corporate and service club
members on-site to help in the building of these homes”.
“Our priority continues to be the campaign for funds and
donated materials & services. But equally important is the search
for our new Habitat Partner families,” said Coburn. Right now,
the focus for this Habitat for Humanity Southeast BC build is
on finding families who currently live within the Castlegar and
surrounding area and have demonstrated needs for the housing
HFHSEBC can provide.
HFHSEBC welcome applications from families who might not
be able to afford a conventional mortgage, but through our selection
process, may qualify for one of our 4 family homes - one of
which is fully accessible for a family with a person(s) with mobility
issues. This build, in partnership with the City of Castlegar
and funded through core support from CMHC, Columbia Basin
Trust, and BC Housing is just the start of a renewed commitment
by HFHSEBC to build affordable homes throughout the Kootenay/Boundary
region.
Habitat for Humanity believes that access to affordable housing
Invasive Mussel Free in 2022
Lake monitoring continues
to be a vital component
of the B.C. Invasive
Mussel Defence Program.
Between mid-June and
the end of October staff
and contractors from the
Central Kootenay Invasive
Species Society (CKISS)
collected 265 samples
from local lakes and rivers
in order to detect the presence
of invasive zebra and
quagga mussels (Dreissena
polymorpha and Dreissena rostriformis bugenis).
The sampling results recently came back from a B.C. Government
designated lab with good news! All samples tested negative
for the presence of these invasive mussels. This is good news
considering invasive mussels may be impossible to eradicate once
established in a waterbody. This is the tenth year in a row the
CKISS has been conducting lake motioning in the Central Kootenays.
In 2022, samples were taken from Upper and Lower Arrow,
Kootenay, Duncan, Slocan, Summit, and Whatshan Lakes, and
Columbia, Kootenay, and Slocan Rivers (upper and lower).
The introduction of zebra and quagga mussels (ZQM) could
have devastating environmental, economic, and social impacts in
the Kootenay region and other regions in BC. ZQM can displace
native aquatic plants & wildlife, reducing biodiversity & ecosystem
health. Furthermore, invasive mussels can affect summer fun
by covering once beautiful beaches in foul-smelling, razor-sharp
shells.
ZQM are unique because they have the ability to attach to
hard surfaces and can survive for multiple weeks out of the
water. These characteristics mean they can easily be moved
between waterbodies, which emphasizes the need to Clean
Drain Dry boats and other watercraft/equipment when exiting
all waterbodies. The CKISS stresses the need to take action
through prevention to protect our waters as there is no turning
back the clock on a zebra and quagga mussel invasion. If you
are bringing your motorized or non-motorized watercraft into
BC, please contact the B.C. Invasive Mussel Defence Program
(www.gov.bc.ca/invasivemussels) to determine if your boat is
high-risk and should be inspection and potentially decontaminated
before accessing BC’s lakes and rivers.
Watch for Mistletoe!
According to custom, if you’re caught
standing under the mistletoe, you may
get a kiss. For centuries, mistletoe has
been considered a plant that increases
life and fertility. Celtic Druids living in
the 1st century A.D. viewed it as a symbol
of vivacity, since it remained green
while other plants were bare during
winter. Some historians believe the connection
between mistletoe and a kiss
comes from ancient Norse mythology.
According to happier versions of the legend,
Baldur (sometimes spelled Baldr or
Balder) was killed by an enemy’s arrow
made of mistletoe. His mother, the goddess
Frigg, wept tears onto the arrow.
Her tears turned into white berries that she placed onto Baldur’s
wound, bringing him back to life. Overjoyed, Frigg blessed the
mistletoe plant and promised a kiss to all who passed beneath it.
So what, exactly, is mistletoe? The far-from-romantic answer
is that it’s a parasitic plant, which means it depends on another
plant for survival. Mistletoe can only grow if its seeds are carried
to a “host” tree by birds that have eaten mistletoe berries. Typically,
a bird will squeeze a mistletoe berry in its beak, squishing out
a sticky, coated seed. The bird eats the fruit and cleans the sticky
coating, called “viscin,” off its beak by wiping it against a nearby
branch. As the viscin hardens, the seed becomes firmly attached
to the host tree.
The mistletoe then invades the host, “stealing” nutrients and
water from it. In fact, the scientific name for American mistletoe
(Phoradendron) is Greek for “thief of the tree.”
More fun facts about mistletoe:
• Birds can eat mistletoe berries, but they’re highly toxic to
humans.
• Approximately 20 species of mistletoe can be found on the
endangered species list.
• Celtic Druids believed that mistletoe contained the spirit of
the tree in which it grew; this was the only part of the tree that
stayed green all winter.
Non-Profits Modernize Technology
91 organizations get support from Trust
The list of non-profit organizations across the Columbia Basin
that will soon be benefiting from new technology is long. Ninety-one
groups are purchasing equipment that will improve their
operations and help them continue to deliver vital services. The
projects are being done with support from Columbia Basin Trust.
“People in the region rely on non-profits for so many reasons—
to help the vulnerable, to provide emergency services, to increase
opportunities for youth, to just name a few,” said Justine Cohen,
Manager, Delivery of Benefits, Columbia Basin Trust. “Up-todate
technology helps them do their jobs better, widely benefiting
many.” The groups are purchasing and installing items like desktop
and laptop computers, tablets, software, servers, photocopiers
and scanners. The Trust’s total contribution is nearly $675,000.
Here are a few of the recipients:
Arrow Lakes Search and Rescue Society
Based in Nakusp, the Arrow Lakes Search and Rescue Society is
purchasing various pieces of technology that will help it continue
to provide emergency services throughout the area. This includes
computers, monitors, mice, a television and a subscription to
SARtopo software.
“Technology is becoming increasingly important in all aspects
of search and rescue, from real-time location data to network
communication,” said Daniel Abraham, Vice-President. “These
items will enable our operations managers to efficiently deploy
our resources and monitor their status, and they will greatly assist
us in keeping our response efforts fast and effective. Additionally,
they will help bring us up to the regional technology standard
utilized by other Kootenay search and rescue groups, vital for
mutual operations.”
Circle of Indigenous Nations Society
The Circle of Indigenous Nations Society is upgrading its
website to Wordpress software, which will modernize the user
experience, improve the security of the site and enhance privacy
through data encryption. This will help the society better serve
people in the West Kootenay as it provides programs rooted in
Indigenous practices, such as Aboriginal Family Services and
Aboriginal Community Wellness.
“The COINS website is a key channel for us to put out information
and for clients and the general public to connect with
our staff and programs,” said Kris Salikin, Executive Director.
“Optimizing our site is an important step in our organization’s
development.”
Kootenay Livestock Association
In its aim to strengthen and promote the agriculture industry in
the region, the Kootenay Livestock Association (KLA) is purchasing
a laptop, wireless keyboard and wireless mouse, to be used by
its office administrator; a phone for conference calls, to be used
by staff, program coordinators and committee members; and a
projector that will be used to deliver programs and presentations.
“With this support, the KLA will enhance how we connect with
agriculture producers throughout the region,” said Tanya Molle,
Administrator. “Incorporating new tech into the KLA will help us
to improve the accessibility, variety and frequency of KLA programs
and initiatives.”
Lardeau Valley Opportunity LINKS Society
To make it even easier to live and thrive in the area, the Lardeau
Valley Opportunity LINKS Society connects individuals, businesses
and other groups and organizations in the Lardeau Valley,
including serving as an information and communications hub. It
is purchasing various technological products and services, as well
as redesigning its community website and creating an interactive
digital map of the area.
“Not only have we been able to purchase various hardware and
software subscriptions to increase our efficiency, but we are also
very excited for the opportunity to rebuild the community website,”
said Chelsey Jones, Executive Director. “The vision for the
new website is to effectively serve residents and visitors as a hub of
information and a modern tool for coordination and information
sharing in the Lardeau Valley. It will have more basic function
than the current website, and it will also benefit from the creative
contributions of local photographers, artists and designers to
truly reflect the beauty and talent in the Lardeau Valley.”
