Changes
aim to make
pools safer
for young
people
TWO NEW initiatives to make
it safer for young people at city
council pools, including Jellie
Park and Graham Condon, will
be in place this summer.
From January 16, 2023, children
under 12 will need to be accompanied
by a caregiver aged 16 or
older, while coloured wristbands
are being provided to young children
or their caregivers.
“We’ve made these changes to
make it safer for young people
who use our facilities and easier
for our staff to talk about best
practice,” city council head of
recreation, sports and events Nigel
Cox said.
“From Monday, January 16, 2023,
children under 12 years will need
to be accompanied at all times by
a caregiver aged 16 or older unless
they are attending a supervised
programme or activity, such as club
event or Swimsmart lesson.”
As of last Tuesday, wristbands
are being provided, with parents
or caregivers of children zero to
four years old being given orange
wristbands to wear while they are
in the pool. Purple wristbands are
being given to children aged five
to seven.
“It is difficult as a lifeguard to
figure out who fits into which age
group and know who is being actively
supervised, especially in the
height of summer when our pools
are busy,” Cox said.
“The wristbands make it easier
and will help to keep our youngest
pool users safer.”

I’m sure that many of you are looking
forward to what is shaping up to be a
stunning Canterbury summer. For me,
it’s also a time for reflection.
It’s been a busy year for the
Government as we’ve continued to
support New Zealanders through
a challenging period while making
progress on some of the biggest issues
facing our community.
We know global issues like rising
inflation have had a real impact here
at home, and many people are feeling
the pinch. That’s why we’ve rolled out
a significant package of cost of living
support to help ease the pressure on
families.
We’ve also continued our work to
lift incomes. In April, we boosted
Superannuation, student allowances,
the family tax credit, and main benefits,
providing extra income for thousands
of households.
While supporting New Zealanders with
the cost of living has been a priority,
I’m really proud of the progress we’ve
made in other key areas, including
health.
We launched Te Whatu Ora – Health
New Zealand, which will ensure
everyone can receive quality care.
We’ve also made a record investment
in Pharmac, which means more people
are able to receive lifesaving medicines
and treatments. I’m delighted that this
will soon include Trikafta for people
with cystic fibrosis.
These are just some of the things
we’ve achieved. There’s a lot more on
the horizon for next year and I look
forward to continuing to work hard for
Ilam in 2023.
My electorate office will be closed from
22 December to 16 January.
I hope you have the chance to relax
and spend time with loved ones this
holiday season. I wish you a very Merry
Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Transitional housing to open next week

TRANSITIONAL housing units
in Richmond will be open next
week for young families facing
homelessness.
Six two-bedroom units and one
three-bedroom unit are part of
the $2.25 million Pavitt St social
housing project – a collaboration
between The Society St Vincent
de Paul Christchurch and the St
John of God Hauora Trust, which
aims to provide short and longterm
accommodation and a range
of support services to young
parents.
These units will be available to
rent from three months to more
than two years.

“There’s quite a few outcomes
that we’re hoping for, not just

their lives, so a service like this
helps them get a different experience
of what life can be like and
what a stable family looks like.”
It all started in 2018 when St
Vincent de Paul Christchurch
president Mike Daly decided to
investigate how to make the best
use of the organisation’s unoccupied
land.
He said it then prompted a
conversation with SJGHT staff,
who noted a need for social
housing for vulnerable young
people.
“(SJGHT staff) said they have
this programme helping young
mothers but they struggle to find
good-quality housing, so we said
that we have some vacant lands
. . . and that’s how it came about.
“They come across these young
mums that are homeless, couch
surfing, or sharing accommodation
because they can’t afford
their own. It’s difficult for them
to find rentals because they’re

they’re so young, they’ve got no
references and they also usually
have a young baby and a couple

Daly said the organisation

Soft toys in search of new homes

THESE CUDDLY teddies are
not the only ones looking for a
new home where they will be
loved again.
From sharks to rabbits and
sheep, there will be a wide range
of soft toys available for adoption
at Phillipstown Community Hub
tomorrow.
Trust manager Viviana Zanetti
said it is great that people can
have a special gift for their children
in the weeks leading up to
the festive season.
“Christmas can be a really
stressful season for many families.
There are so many expectations
like gifts, celebrations.
So it’s (good) to give them an
opportunity to have something
nice.
“Maybe these toys are preloved,
but they are nice.”
Rowley Resource Centre manager
Evelyn Kenneally agreed,
saying there is always a need for
toys especially at Christmas.
“It’s great to be able to give (the
toys) to people in need that can’t
afford to buy their kids toys.”
The toys were delivered to the
community hub, the resource centre
and the Hoon Hay Food Bank
by the Christchurch South Community
Patrol two weeks ago.
So far, all of the soft toys at the
resource centre have been given
away to the community.

partner Nicole will be using the
donated toys as part of their
Christmas present drive, with
nominations and requests opening
next week.
“We will have well over 500
gifts to give out.
“There are so many more
people who are a part of this and
make it all possible and please
know from the bottom of our
hearts, we thank each and every
one of them for their donations.”
Patrol leader Ken Bye said
the mission to bring smiles to
deserving children started in
November when a patroller came
up with the idea to
collect pre-loved soft toys to
donate.
The project quickly received
support from other patrollers
and the community. Within a
month, the group gathered more
than 100 soft toys.
“We thought part of our jobs
was to provide our community
safety and support. And we
thought it was something fun
and easy to do,” said Bye.
“We are thinking of expanding
it next year, but we will see how
it goes this year.”

Climate change
risk screening
released by city
council
THE CITY council has released
its climate change risk screening
for Christchurch and Banks
Peninsula.
“This risk screening is a really
useful tool for the council to help
us understand and plan for the
significant risks that our district
faces due to climate change,” said
city council adaptation planning
team leader Jane Morgan.
The risk screening identifies
significant risks to the natural and
built environment domains in six
areas across the district. It will be
used to prioritise projects in Asset
Management Plans and the Long
Term Plan, ensuring climate resilience
is appropriately included in
planning and implementing the
city council’s work.
Some of the priority risks
identified include: sea level
rise, storm surge, tsunami and
rising groundwater in coastal
Christchurch; increasing
temperatures and drought in
inland Christchurch; coastal
and flood hazards in coastal
Banks Peninsula; drought, heat
and wildfire in inland Banks
Peninsula; and wildfires and
landslides in the Port Hills.
Akaroa will be affected by all
these risks.

$7.85m cycleway stage opened
THE FINAL stage of the
Rapanui-Shag Rock cycleway,
was opened last week.
It is one of six cycle routes to
benefit from the Government’s
‘shovel-ready’ Covid-19
infrastructure fund and is
the latest addition to the city
council’s Major Cycle Routes.
Work began on the first stage
of the cycleway in Linwood in
2015.
“The cycleway includes a
total of 7.4km of shared paths
and neighbourhood greenways,
connecting three schools and
pre-schools, as well as eight
parks and reserves so it’s a really
important link,” Heathcote
Ward city councillor Sara
Templeton said.
The $7.85 million section takes
riders from Dyers Rd to the
Ferrymead bridge.
It goes through Charlesworth
Reserve, a tidal wetland home
to native birds and more than
100,000 trees and shrubs, before
connecting back to Humphreys
Drive on the reserve side of the
Ferrymead shops.
Said Templeton: “This hasn’t
just been the construction of a
cycleway. We’ve planted upwards
of 35,000 additional trees and
shrubs along the route to help
improve the health of Linwood
Canal, as well as support local
inanga or whitebait.
“There has also been a lot of
work done on the failing seawall
along the front of Tidal View

Two new signalised crossings
on Humphreys Drive provide
safe crossing points for people
using the cycleway, and provide
a connection to the Ferrymead
Bridge to Redcliffs section of
the Christchurch Coastal
Pathway.
“It’s exciting to think once the
Coastal Pathway is complete in
2023, there will be a safe cycleway
all the way from the central
city to Sumner, one of our most
distant suburbs,” Templeton
said.
“It will make things safer and
more convenient for commuters
and students and will also be a
fantastic recreational path.”

Make sweet treats with muesli
Get into the festive
spirit with these
healthy muesli
treats that will
be in demand
during the holidays
Festive muesli
Makes 7 cups
Ingredients
4 cups rolled oats
½ cup each: pumpkin seeds,
sunflower seeds
1 cup pistachio nuts
170g packet raisins
2 tsp ground cinnamon
75gm butter, chopped
1 cup maple syrup
Directions
Preheat the oven to 180 deg C.
Lightly grease a large roasting
pan with butter.
Combine all the dried ingredients
in a large bowl.
Place the butter and maple
syrup in a small saucepan.
Heat on low until the butter is
melted. Stir well. Pour into the
dry ingredients and mix well.
Pour into the roasting pan.
Bake for about 20min, stirring
well every 5min.
Cool completely, then store in
airtight containers.
Muesli trifles
Serves 2
Ingredients
1½ cups berries, sliced if large
1 cup each: vanilla bean yoghurt,
natural muesli whipped
cream to garnish
Directions
Place a ¼ of the berries in the
base of two wine glasses. Top with
a quarter of the yoghurt then a
quarter of the muesli.
Repeat the layers.
Chill for at least 1 hour.
Great served topped with
whipped cream.
Peanut butter and
marshmallow fudge
Makes about 24 pieces
Ingredients
400g dark chocolate chips
1 cup smooth peanut
butter
3½ cups marshmallows, cut into
quarters
½ cup chopped toasted peanuts
or macadamia nuts
Directions
Lightly grease a 23cm square
pan or similar.
Melt the chocolate chips and
peanut butter together in a saucepan
on low heat.
Stir, until smooth. Fold in
the marshmallows and nuts.
Pour into the pan and chill, until
set.
Cut into squares and package in
attractive containers. Store in the
refrigerator.
Pineapple with basil lime
sugar
Serves 6
Ingredients
20gm Butter
1 pineapple
1 handful basil leaves
½ cup sugar
2 limes, zested
1 optional thick greek yoghurt
1 to serve ice cream
1 to serve lime, wedges
Directions
Remove skin from pineapple, cut
into 1cm slices and cut slices in
half.
Melt butter in a large frypan.
When it starts to bubble and turn
brown, add pineapple slices.
Fry for 2min on each side to
caramelise. You may need to cook
pineapple in two batches.
Bash basil, lime zest and a little
sugar to a paste with a mortar and
pestle, then mix in the remaining
sugar with a spoon.
Alternatively, blitz basil with lime
zest and sugar in a food processor
until very finely chopped (you may
need to shake the blender to make
sure everything completely mixes
together).
To serve, lay 3-4 slices cooked
pineapple on a plate, sprinkle over
a few teaspoons of basil sugar.
Serve with a dollop of Greek
yoghurt or scoop of ice-cream and
a lime wedge to squeeze over the
dessert.

held on February 17, 2023.

for our Little Ray of Giving campaign again this

The Christchurch Kidney Society (CKS) was
formed in 1973, initially as the New Zealand
Kidney, Dialysis and Transplant Society. Their
aim is to provide support for Christchurch
patients and families of patients who are either
approaching or have already reached endstage
renal failure.
This year the Christchurch Kidney Society would
