suspected of stealing

A GIFT SHOP owner has 

never seen stock disappearing 

like it has started to do on 

days cruise ships dock – and 

she suspects passengers are 

pocketing it. 

Maree Henry said she was 

disappointed and shocked at 

the suspected thefts from her 

business Henry Trading on 

London St in Lyttelton. 

“It’s a little shop . . . it’s 

not The Warehouse. You 

just get by working week to 

week,” she said. 

“I’m trading, buying and 

selling, so the theft makes a 

dent in that equation.” 

Specifically, she has 

noticed merino socks, silk 

scarves and jewellery stocks 

declining. 

When the Westerdam ship 

docked on Thursday, Henry 

said some candles – normally 

sold in packs of two – were 

missing, as the packs had only 

one candle left.

Artist continues Stoddart tradition 

ARTIST WAYNE Seyb will present 

a new body of work reflecting local 

landscapes, completed as part of an 

artist residency programme. 

Seyb’s exhibition Edge of Water is 

on at the Stoddart Cottage Gallery 

from January 6-29. 

This year Seyb spent one month 

working in the Purau hills near 

Diamond Harbour, after becoming 

the first recipient of the Margaret 

Stoddart-Purau Artist Residency. 

The programme aims to provide 

an artist with an opportunity to stay 

in the Karearea Cottage in Purau for 

a month between early May and late 

September at no charge. 

Many of Seyb’s works produced 

over June were painted en plein air 

– a process of creating paintings outdoors. 

His exploration of the elemental 

contrasts between the land and 

sea echoes the spirit of Impressionist 

painter Margaret Stoddart.

Primary achievers receive Puawai Awards 

NINE YEAR 8 pupils from 

three local primary schools are 

heading to five different high 

schools in 2023. What they 

have in common is that they 

are all recipients of the Sumner 

Ferrymead Foundation Puawai 

(Flourish) Award. 

In 2020, the foundation 

launched the Puawai Award to 

recognise students who flourished 

in their last year at primary 

school. Each school defines the 

criteria for the award and has 

$1000 to allocate between the 

recipients. 

“We introduced the award to 

help with the costs associated 

with transitioning from primary 

school to high school,” said trustee 

Jane Paterson. 

“They may use the award 

towards the cost of technology, 

uniforms, stationery, or whatever 

they feel would be most useful.” 

Ruby Patterson, Rune Calvert 

and Sophie Marcham from 

Heathcote Valley Primary School 

are all going to Hagley College 

next year, and plan to use the 

award to assist in the purchase of 

new computers. 

Both Ruby and Sophie are 

keen on art and writing, and 

Rune is keen on art and maths. 

They all enjoy the outdoors; 

Ruby likes going to the beach, 

Sophie likes netball and swimming 

and Rune enjoys walking 

with his family.

and maths feature.

from their award towards, but 

for Morgan it won’t be a uniform 

as she is off to Hagley College. 

A competitive roller-skater, she

Shirley Boys’ High School. 

The primary school awards 

are just one component of the 

Sumner Ferrymead Foundation’s 

scholarship and awards 

programme. On January 4, 

applications open for a range 

of academic and Outward 

Bound scholarships, along 

with apprentice awards, and 

an environment/sustainability 

award.

grants from individuals and 

community organisations for 

some 30 years, but a few years

Park has been made safer. 

A new section of guard rail 

has been installed on Dyers Pass 

Rd opposite the Victoria Park 

entrance, providing adventure 

park users a safer alternative to 

biking up the road. 

The city council worked with 

the adventure park to see how 

the corner could be safer for 

everyone.

was good to see everyone working 

together to improve safety 

and connectivity on this corner.

committing crimes on New 

Zealand soil. 

Once they were on the ship, 

they were in international waters 

and would have completely 

different rights. 

“If we charge them, that means 

they go to court, but they’re not 

actually living in New Zealand, 

so how can we make them go to 

court?” Partridge said. 

Factors to consider included 

what was stolen and if it could 

be paid for or returned in the 

same condition as it when it was 

taken. 

On the days they were working, 

Partridge said the Lyttelton 

officers made themselves visible 

to the community.

Trees for Canterbury grows stronger

WHEN YOU’RE looking for 

a native plant for your garden, 

many of us think of Trees for 

Canterbury, the not-for-profit 

native nursery. But not many 

people realise when they 

purchase a plant from there, they 

are doing a lot more. 

“We do so much more than 

growing healthy plants for our 

shop,” said manager Steve Bush. 

“We are growing healthy 

communities, and to do this we 

have a three-pronged approach: 

employment, education and 

regeneration.” 

To be able to expand the 

regeneration programme – 

cultivating native plants for 

community plantings and their 

own revegetation projects – Trees 

for Canterbury needed more 

land. 

“I approached the council 

to see if we could use council 

land bordering our premises 

and, given we have an 

excellent relationship with 

them, I assumed it would be 

straightforward, based on past 

experience at our Opawa site,” 

said Bush.

“But I hadn’t factored in that it 

was a coastal reserve and it had 

overhead transmission lines, so 

we had to change the original 

resource consent and go through 

the community consultation 

process. And by the time we had 

that sorted it was winter, not a 

great time for the contractors to 

start.” 

But the wait has been worth 

it, and staff and volunteers are 

beginning to move the stock for 

community plantings, projects 

and give-aways into the new 

area. This will free up more space 

for the retail side of the business, 

which has grown considerably 

since the start of Covid-19. 

“It could be considered one the 

positives that have come out of 

the last few years,” Bush said. 

And while the planting of the 

perimeter won’t happen until 

winter, it hasn’t delayed the move 

into the new area. 

“Community plantings are 

becoming more frequent, and 

now that businesses are taking 

a more serious approach to 

looking after the environment 

we are needing a lot more stock 

to meet our regeneration targets. 

“We have recently signed 

agreements with both Team 

Hutchinson Ford and Garage 

Project, they are good 

examples of businesses who are 

looking at innovative ways of 

supporting us and greening local 

communities.” 

Bush hopes the expansion will 

allow Trees for Canterbury to 

employ more people – especially 

disadvantaged people, including 

those with physical, intellectual 

and social disabilities, and at-risk 

youth. 

“They are a vital part of our 

business model; we want to 

provide an environment of 

acceptance and support, as 

well as enabling selfdevelopment, 

and building both 

self-esteem and a good work 

habit,” Bush said.

Booze 

ban for 

Woolston

A TEMPORARY alcohol ban has 

been implemented in Woolston 

Village to reduce alcohol-related 

harm and improve safety. 

From last Wednesday, the 

possession and consumption 

of alcohol is prohibited in the 

village’s public spaces for six 

months. City councillors voted 

unanimously on December 14 to 

implement the ban. It applies all 

streets off Ferry Rd and nearby 

Radley Park. 

After six months, city council 

staff will assess the ban’s effectiveness 

and recommend whether 

it should be made permanent. 

The staff report noted photographic 

evidence of anti-social 

behaviour and community views 

on the ban were taken into consideration. 

The city council received 92 

submissions on the ban, of which 

81 were in favour of it. Police, 

the city council alcohol licensing 

team and the medical officer of 

health supported the trial. 

Police cited mental health 

issues, drugs and alcohol as the 

likely cause of increasing issues 

with beggars in Woolston. 

Police will make regular 

patrols to enforce the ban. 


Excess water charge 

remission applications open 

REMISSION applications are 

now available on excess water 

charges for eligible Banks 

Peninsula and Christchurch 

residents. 

Households that regularly use 

much more water than average 

now pay extra for their water 

supply. 

The new rating scheme targets 

the small proportion of households 

in the district who use, on 

average, more than 700 litres of 

water a day. 

High water 

users pay a fixed 

rate of $1.35 

for every 1000 

litres they use 

over the limit, 

with the first

Households 

who fall into the high use category 

will not get charged until their 

bill tops $25 – which equates to 

average use of approximately 900 

litres a day. 

City council head of three 

waters Helen Beaumont said

approved, a remission fully or 

partially reduces an excess water 

bill. 

“If a household’s high water 

use is due to having more than 

eight family members, a leak that 

has been fixed, and/or a medical 

condition then they can put in a 

remission application,” she said. 

“The first invoices aren’t due 

to be sent until late January. 

We’ve opened applications for 

remissions now, and people 

who meet the criteria can have a 

remission application approved 

in advance.” 

Beaumont said residents could 

apply online through the city 

council’s website, or by filling 

in a paper form which can be 

requested from the call centre or 

picked up at any council service 

centre. 

“As part of the application 

process residents need to provide 

property information, details 

about their situation, and evidence 

such as a doctor’s note or 

invoice from a certified plumber. 

“When we’re considering 

applications we’ll review a

By putting the right stuff in the yellow bin, you’re making it possible for us to recycle.

Treasures from the Past: 

A very Whakaraupō Christmas 

‘TWAS THE week before 

Christmas of 1905, and all was 

quiet in Whakaraupō Lyttelton 

Harbour, after a more or less 

blissfully uneventful year in His 

Majesty Edward VII’s British 

Colony of New Zealand. 

While that year began with 

what would later come to be 

known as the ‘First’ Russian 

Revolution against the Tsars, 

followed by Kaiser Wilhelm’s 

meddling in the ‘First’ Moroccan 

Crisis, the European cataclysm 

these events presaged was still 

a decade away. Meanwhile, an 

obscure German fellow by the 

name of Einstein had published 

four rather interesting papers 

in the science journal Annals of 

Physics that literally no one knew 

would lead to atom bombs, the 

discovery of galactic black holes, 

and a microchip computer revolution 

later that century. 

In Aotearoa New Zealand, 

perhaps the biggest news of 1905 

was the resounding success of 

the New Zealand soccer team’s 

first international tour of Australia, 

winning 6-3 with just two 

draws. Somewhat less surprising 

was the December re-election of 

New Zealand’s longest serving 

and rather controversial Prime

In Ōhinehou Lyttelton, apart 

from a disappointing start with 

the postponement of the New 

Year regatta due to a fierce 

southwesterly gale, not much else 

of note appears to have occurred, 

although the Lyttelton Borough 

Council did declare Corsair Bay 

‘a pleasure resort for the public of 

Canterbury’ with works to begin 

the following year. 

And so we come to the Whakaraupō 

Christmas festivities of 

1905, headlined by the St John’s 

Presbyterian Church Bazaar, 

which opened Friday evening, 

December 22, at the Lyttelton 

Railway Social Hall and would 

run, on and off, through to New 

Year’s Day. 

Organised by the erstwhile 

Presbyterian women of the local 

congregation to raise funds 

for a new school house, the 

stalls included local produce, 

ornaments, flowers, dolls and 

even a shooting range, all of 

which proved popular with the 

townsfolk. 

The following Saturday 

eve, which functioned as an 

informal Christmas Eve for 

many, the Salvation Army Band 

wandered the streets singing 

carols, apparently competing 

with the Lyttelton Marine Band 

for audiences who were less in 

evidence than a usual Saturday 

night. No doubt, many townsfolk 

had trained into the city for the 

revelries. Nonetheless, quiet 

night or no, some still had to let 

off a few firecrackers to disturb 

the peace! 

The actual Christmas Eve 

on Sunday was celebrated with 

evensong carols, and large 

congregations turned out at the 

churches of the Holy Trinity, 

St Saviours, St Johns and St 

Josephs to celebrate the Western 

Christian Festival of Nativity, 

while the Lyttelton Marine 

Band performed the traditional 

Christmas ‘waits’ through the 

town until late. 

Christmas Day on Monday, 

December 25, 1905 was 

apparently rather pleasant, 

with the church services over 

early, and the Marine and 

Salvation Army bands’ carols 

and Christmas hymns echoing 

through the town’s streets into 

the afternoon. It’s said that 

many people even then, rather 

than sweating over a traditional 

English-style steaming hot 

Christmas pudding, took to 

the hills and beaches for cool 

summer recreation. 

While many Canterbury 

train services were cancelled for 

Christmas Day, the Christchurch 

to Lyttelton service continued 

non-stop and saw many hundreds 

of ‘flatlanders’ visiting the 

harbour. The passenger steamers 

were busy too, through to Boxing 

Day, ferrying holidaymakers 

to Diamond Harbour’s Godley 

House and pleasure gardens, and 

out to Governors Bay with its 

Ocean View Hotel and pleasant 

surrounds. With reportedly “delightful” 

weather for swimming 

and yachting, this was a very 

Whakaraupō Christmas. 

And so we wish a happy 

Christmas to all, and the best of 

the New Year!

We both agreed that hybrids 

and electrification would be the 

dominating market. 

That’s not saying that fossil-fuelled 

powered cars will diminish, 

they won’t and there will 

be plenty on offer from almost 

all manufacturers, but there will 

be many engines that will pass by 

the way, those that are thirsty and 

some that deliver high performance. 

In part, that will be due to the 

financial demands at purchase 

as successive governments’ tax 

petrol and diesel cars that can’t 

make further carbon emission 

reductions. Buyers won’t want to 

keep forking out an extra amount 

to subsidise those who are buying 

into low emission models. 

It will be interesting to see how 

it all plays out, and I’ll be keeping 

watch and reporting on trends as 

I become aware. 

One such model that doesn’t 

fall wayward of the Clean Car 

Rebate scheme is the Lexus NX 

350h Limited – it’s a petrol/electric 

hybrid that from $101,900 

sits in the neutral fee/rebate 

category. 

Regular readers will recall my 

October evaluation of the NX 

450h+, it’s a plug-in hybrid that 

shares much the same hybrid 

system as its stablemates – bar 

the fact that it has the ability to 

charge domestically or from a 

designated charge port. 

Both it and the 350h share the 

Hybrid Synergy Drive system that 

has gone through a raft of Toyota 

and Lexus product in the past, 

although Lexus is quick to point 

out that it’s been the product of 

constant refinement and advances 

in technology. Today, it is a 

seamless system and one that 

will provide you with substantial 

fuel savings and the performance 

befitting of any modern mid-size 

SUV. 

Interestingly, the NX is a nomenclature 

for nimble crossover, 

although I see it as a traditional 

SUV but, of course, wearing the 

Lexus badge it is a luxury model 

befitting all the kudos that Lexus 

represents in our market. It may 

come as some surprise then to 

know that the NX series is based 

primarily on Toyota’s RAV4 

platform, it shares much the same 

driveline and, in stature, shares 

much the same dimensions. 

COMPACT: The Lexus NX 350h Limited is described as a 

nimble crossover but its dimensions put it squarely in the 

sport utility vehicle category. 

LEXUS NX 350h LIMITED: Traditional hybrid driveline. 

That gives some insight as to 

why the NX is an important and 

popular model for Lexus, it is the 

traditional SUV – not too big and 

not too small. It is ideal for the 

modern family and cocoons all 

those on board with traditional 

Lexus values of comfort and 

luxury. 

It also gets a high level of 

specification, in Limited form it 

gets just about all the ingredients 

Lexus can pack in, especially 

for safety, it easily qualifies for a 

five-star Australasian New Car 

Assessment Program rating. 

Of course, if you don’t want or 

need all of the bells and whistles, 

there’s an entry-level model into 

the range, a front-wheel-drive 

variant that sits at $92,700, while 

for interest’s sake, the plug-in 

variant lists at $107,900. 

For me, I’d be picking up the 

entry-level version, it would keep 

me entertained on the road for 

many years and I’d still be reaping 

the rewards of its fuel efficiency 

and driving dynamics. 

Under the bonnet sits a 2.5-litre, 

four-cylinder engine, it is 

harnessed to an electric motor 

that is powered by a lithium-ion 

battery bank, the latter charged 

by regenerative energy and the 

petrol engine. Like the RAV4, the 

NX 350h in evaluation car form 

has a separate motor sitting over

the rear axles, drive therefore 

is presented to each of the four 

wheels. Combined power outputs 

for the NX list at 179kW and 

227Nm. 

With 188mm of ground clearance 

the NX 4WD has reasonable 

off-the-seal potential, sure it’s not 

a bush basher but it will take you 

over uneven ground into camping 

spots and, of course, the ski 

field access road. 

The drive system also offers 

a high degree of grip on sealed 

surfaces, the NX feels deliberate 

on the road, there is strong communication 

as to how the tyres 

are behaving on all terrain. I took 

the evaluation car on a circuit 

between Canterbury’s two main 

river gorges. It dispenses the 

kilometres quietly and capably 

and just feels so right to be in. It 

has substantial performance and 

it handles with much dignity. 

More importantly are the fuel 

usage statistics. Buyers choose 

hybrids partly to get the benefits 

of fewer fill-ups. The NX 350h is 

rated with a 5.5-litre per 100km 

combined cycle average. That’s 

easily achievable, during my time 

with the model it was constantly 

showing 7l/100km, sipping fuel 

at 4l/100km instantaneously at 

100km/h. 

On the subject of figures, the 

NX is also quite sprightly, a nod 

to its nimble crossover title, it 

will sprint to 100km/h from a 

standstill in 7.7sec, along with 

a 4.7sec time to make 120km/h 

from 80km/h. 

My wife and I have long since 

ended our search for a new sport 

utility vehicle. Toyota’s RAV4 was 

on high on our short-list, but was 

pipped at the post. We talked a lot 

about what we would buy if the 

Lotto balls had lined up during 

our quest, we both liked the RAV 

and decided that if we suddenly 

became rich the NX 350h would 

be the car for us. 

It still holds much appeal, but 

the way our Lotto tickets have 

been looking lately it doesn’t look 

like I’ll be heading back to chat 

with the sales team at Lexus any 

time soon.
