WHO WOULD BE
A MANAGER?
Our regular contributor DAVE BURKINSHAW casts a glance over former
United players who have tried their hand at management...
Shaun Derry...
Nottingham-born Shaun Derry
was a strong, hard-working and
energetic midfielder, most suited
to a defensive role.
He made his Football League bow with
the team he had supported as a boy, Notts
County, in March 1996. After impressing
with County, the Blades signed him in
January 1998 for fee reportedly in the
£700K region.
He made 72 league appearances
for United including an appearance as
an emergency goalkeeper in a game
at Portsmouth, keeping a clean sheet.
The only goal he scored for the club
came in an FA Cup tie away to Rushden
and Diamonds.
United boss Neil Warnock sold Shaun
to Portsmouth in March 2000 for a fee in
the region of £400K. Shaun then had a
number of other moves during his playing
career including two spells with Crystal
Palace and stints at Leeds United, QPR
